Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

Beat Gravity Rush Remastered on the PS4. This was the game that almost convinced me to buy a Vita. Now I'm kind of thankful I didn't and waited until recently to pick up a PSTV. It's been awhile since I felt so conflicted about a game. Interesting characters and nice art style, but some terrible combat controls, half-baked story, and a handful of annoying/repetitive mission objectives.

The game had incredible potential. Hopefully Gravity Rush 2 improves heavily upon it.
The game feels much more different and immersive on the PSVita. I personally don't think the controls translate well to console.

On the Vita, thanks to the handheld form, the motion control feels very organic and creates a VR like experience. That's not possible with the Remastered since the TV screen is in a fixed position and separate from the controls.

But I figure, and feared some people are going to walk away disappointed with the exact complaints you just made. The game really shine on the Vita for the control and gameplay thanks to how well it utilize the system. Everything else on the game had room for improvement. The experience of playing the game on the Vita is a world of difference and leaves a much more positive experience about the combat and challenges.

dont know if anyone cares, but i just picked up zestria ps3 on amazon for 27 plus tax, dont remember it being cheaper since release, been waiting for it to get to the 25 mark all tales games hit 3-4 months after release but more afraid it wont get their

Does anyone know if the Street Fighter V pre order bonus costumes will be unlockable via in game cash? I decided to cave in and preorder SF V this weekend but I want that Chun Li costume (I refuse to buy digital because of 20% off Amazon).

Going to wait on price drops on Fire Emblem and PxZ 2. I want both games but not enough to justify the full retail price.

I must admit, I'd love to see the the original Layton games redone for the Wii U or even the 3DS. It's a pity the 3DS line mostly had a short run. Have you looked up the 3DS titles on Amazon lately? They're freaking expensive!

Truth be told, I'm glad Level-5 ended the main series of Layton (no I don't think 7 counts) on a high note. It's nice to be able to look back and say, "Well that was really something nice - and still is" over say Sega's Sonic where people cry out, "Why the fuck don't they let him die already?" When I was playing Layton 6 and even PLvPW I noticed the puzzle variety got less varied and simplified. No seriously, the original trilogy had some serious math puzzles. Don't remember one in the 3DS titles.
Just thought I'd remind people since this topic came up after Christmas. The prices on the recent Layton games are dropping back to sane values (I picked up Miracle/Azran for $30/$35 shipped to Canada). The games are totally out of print though, so if you want sealed copies and forget about them for a year you can expect the prices to double again.

Mitsurugi Kamui Hikae manages to somehow be a worse arena fighter than Croixleur. The only meaningful mechanic is a bunch of royal guard nonsense.

Having said that, if you like skirts and thighs, this is your game. Absolutely top notch thighs.

This looks promising. Looks like a cross between Valkyria Chronicles and Front Mission.

The Senran Kagura Estival Versus LE cards are being broken up into 6 sets of 10 with one set randomly placed in each retail box. The retail release is also $10 more than the digital download.
ehhh...pretty annoying.

I think most people would be happy to pay an additional $5-10 and get all 6 set of cards.

If they're that worried about the price, they can even do a discounted regular edition (without any LE items)

Now people will just buy multiple copies of the game to get all the cards.

Good job XSeed.
They hope the person who buys 6 different copies, get 6 of the same set of cards. ;D

#random
Oh come on, you know you're all gonna do it until you get em all. Besides, Xseed needs more money so I can have my localized Sora no Kiseki the 3rd...

...Or they just want to make sales of Senran look better than they really are.

I know a nearby Walmart that's had copies of both Miracle Mask and Azran Legacy sitting on the shelf for forever, so I have to doubt that there's that much demand for them.

Happened to me for most of my games preordered from Amazon. I don't get release date delivery anymore >_<.
to be fair a big ass blizzard is supposed to hit tonight and continue until 1pm tomorrow so You should be lucky you even get it within a week.

Has the $35 minimum for best buy's free shipping always been post gcu discount? I swear I've gotten free shipping on $40 games before but project x zone 2 is showing a $3.99 shipping charge.

No, that's a new thing. It used to be pre-GCU, but they changed it over the new year for some reason.

That's a regional variance. Around here Azran Legacy soldout everywhere within a few weeks, Miracle Mask hung around in random places for year or so. I haven't even seen so much as a used copy of either in a year.

Online stock levels are obviously more regular. Moderately priced resellers soldout over Christmas, and some copies of Azran were actually fetching up to $80.

3 weeks in a row with early updates on PSN it seems. Everything may not be up yet, but I'll go ahead and post this weeks free crap anyways:

Street Fighter V Sharefactory Theme: https://store.playstation.com/#!/en-us/games/street-fighter-v-sharefactory-theme/cid=UP0102-CUSA01200_00-SFTHEME000000001

A bunch of Rainbow Moon DLC (PS4): https://store.playstation.com/#!/en-us/search/f=%5Erainbow%2Bmoon%7Cbucket~games%3Aplatform~ps4%7C

I saw the Rainbow Moon DLC change price a couple of times from reloads, so I can't say it's permanently free. It's a port of a previous PS3/Vita SRPG that's nothing special.

Dark Souls and Bloodborne had singular expansions. Only the shittiest game in the series (DaS2) did multiple DLCs, and because of that this doesn't bode well for the new game.
Dark Souls 2's DLC had better level and boss design than all of Dark Souls 1 combined excluding that game's DLC. (Of course that's not hard, DkS1's own DLC already beat out everything in DkS1 lol.)

And Souls has not put out a single bad DLC pack yet so I think this is a save bet.

EDIT: Also the only people I've seen call DkS2 shitty are bad at it lol.
