Apologies, totally OT, but that whole "boys are better at (and hence more interested in) science and math than girls" is a myth. Girls tend to do better at academics overall compared to boys. Girls respond well to encouragement, whereas boys tend to need to be given "reality checks". Right now, both my son and daughter really enjoy playing with and building Legos, but I'm sure their interests will change as they grow older.

Back sort of OT, I noticed that TRU.com's 10 off 50 doesn't stack with the general free shipping for over $100 deal that's going on the site right now.
indeed it is a myth. I wouldn't disagree with you. But I didn't state that. Given the norm of society that's the way it's driven, and it will continue to be like that till it's completely shifted away from that.

As for TRU's coupon stacking... when has it ever? I think even the b2g1 and free shipping didn't work either on the time before the last two. It sucks.

I hate TRU.
Definitely believe it. Duplo seems pretty equally aimed at both boys and girls, but outside of Belville, there's not one focused Lego theme for girls. Of course, I'm sure Lego has mostly given up on the 5+ year old girls, and that's why there are few girl-focused themes. I'm guessing Barbie must dominate that age group.

I'm hoping my baby girl will be interested in Lego when she's older. I've been building a better Lego City collection for her, but my Castle, Star Wars, and Indiana Jones collections will be fair game for her as well, if she wants to play with them.
From what I learned from LEGO Executive Mads Nipper at BbtB was that they admit they failed horribly with Belville, which is being discontinued this year. TLG has been doing extensive R&D on an entirely new line for girls with more color variety than just mainly pink, more playability geared towards girls that make more sense and much more challenging builds.
Apologies, totally OT, but that whole "boys are better at (and hence more interested in) science and math than girls" is a myth.
Agreed, and I was going to post something similar. It used to be the case that boys outperformed girls in math, when girls didn't take as many math classes as boys do. Now that that is changing, performance is pretty even:

http://berkeley.edu/news/media/releases/2008/07/24_math.shtml

My own experience as a math tutor and teacher for a number of years across all ages was that girls consistently outperformed boys in math until puberty, right around when their breasts started to develop and they started to feel pressure to conform to certain norms.

It's all learned behavior, and that's not "political correctness" talking. In LEGO's case, it seems to be all about how the product is branded. I have no idea why they don't court the girl demographic the 21st century way, through inclusiveness and universality rather than through misguided "pink brick boxes." I really don't know enough about LEGO or parents' buying habits to know what the problem is, but that 96%/4% split is pretty staggering.

LEGO has picked up licenses that have "Universal" appeal, like Harry Potter. They also have the "Creator" line which include gender neutral models like houses and architecture. I think those kind of sets could be marketed in a way that is more inclusive for older girls, but ultimately, I believe it is the consumers and society that have created significant barriers for teen/tween girls against building toys that are going to be very hard to overcome.

I completely agree. LEGO is sex neutral, sure there are more" boyish", but that's socities stupidity setting those rules. Why can't LEGO Castle be played by a girl? They finally started adding more females to the themes too.

It's like half my family thinks my cousin, who just turned 4 at the time, will become gay because he likes playing with dolls and stuff animals and such. It's because he is playing with his sister! He plays with LEGO ripoffs other times. I was biulding some very hard to put together blocks with him at Christmas and he made a gun!

So it's not LEGO's fault that we live in a stupid close-minded world.

Did somebody just mention "developing breasts" in a Lego deal forum?

I liked it better when we went off topic making fun of each others sports teams...feel free to ridicule the Washington Capitols as they stunk it up tonight.

Hockey!?!?! Pft!
Sorry, it is baseball season.
This article is a few years old, but I just came across it and found it interesting.

http://swindlemagazine.com/issue04/block-heads/

Here's one interesting statistic: "By company estimate, boys and girls use LEGO about equally prior to age five in the United States. After their fifth birthdays, for whatever reason we choose to believe, girls comprise only 4% of LEGO users."
My little 3 year old girl loves both star wars and enjoys playing with her mega blocks. We recently put together super small lego x-wing 30051. I am wanting to collect a lot of the city legos now so that we can put them together when she gets a bit older.
I just scored a X-Wing and a Tie Defender at TRU. Thanks for the heads up guys. Very timely as well since my sons birthday is a couple of weeks away. Special shout out to dansoccerball for the "10 dollars off 50" coupon code as well.
My wife got both of those in store for me today while I was at work. I would like to get the Tantive IV and maybe Endor sets but will hold off for now.
Hockey!?!?! Pft!

It's always baseball season. That's another reason why it sucks.

And while we're on the subject... god damn Mavs... :bomb:

On the topic of sports, I got some of the NBA LEGOs as part of an eBay lot a while back. They... kinda suck. Has LEGO done other sports themes? I feel like they just did the NBA because they signed a very lucrative deal, but they put very little thought into LEGO-izing the theme. I'm also guessing it wasn't too popular, since resale values are rock-bottom.
Baseball? WTF? Are you like 60 years old or something?
fuck you! Hockey is one of the worst "sports" on the face of the Earth. Let's skate around and smash into each other, what a wonderful sport.

Plus no one cares about hockey outside Canada and Boston.

Yes LEGO did a wonderful soccer / football theme that was only released in Europe and then they released a few OK soccer sets in America. Then the released the NBA theme which was horrible and sold just as badly. Then there were a few skateboarding sets, and one snowboarding set that has awesome snowboards. Then there were two hockey sets that sold even worst than the NBA sets because no one cares about hockey.

Hey now...everybody loves hockey until they start developing breasts, after that, it's a whole new ball game.;)

On to Lego deal news...I stopped in a TRU quickly today to check out the SW Lego selection and noticed about four sets that have been put on clearance. Two SW sets, The Twilight for $79.98 and Home One for $88.98, which is $20 off both I believe. Also saw that the Farm set is clearanced ($20 off, I forget the price off-hand) and The Helicopter Transport is $29.98 ($10 off).

I got Home One and an ARC Starfighter...didn't really want Home One but I think I'll hold on to it for the return period since it has been dropping to around $75 on and off lately or hope for one of those XX% off clearance sales. I'll probably return it if doesn't drop unless it grows on me.

This reminds me that I also saw Count Dooku's Starsailor on clearance a couple of weeks ago at another TRU farther away for $49.98 ($10 off), but I have not seen this price at the other stores I've visited. Granted, I didn't care enough to actually scan the set at those stores and TRU clearance is fairly universal from what I remember from video game clearance prices so it might be worth checking if you're interested.

TRU also had the $35 Pig Farm in stock...I'll wait for the impulse set.

Last note...Target has a lot of SW sets on sale for around 10-15% off, if you could get them to price match TRU's BOGO50%off, that would make a pretty good deal. Don't know if they price match BOGO deals though.

Last note for real this time...my local Border's pulled all the Legos of the shelf to do "repricing" from what the girl told me. Crossing my fingers they are just doing an inventory/shelf reorganizing thing and not mark-ups.

you gotta be kidding - 7 months of baseball (Apr-Oct) means 'always baseball season' but 8 months of basketball (Nov-Jun) is okay?

Yes, you can do it...but they can also say you have to return both sets because of the deal...depends on the CSR.

o it would probably easier if i just ordered online and got gift receipts

More like everyone likes hockey until they start liking breasts.

Yeah coming from me that makes little sense.

TLG did actually. Here's the full list.

I noticed that the prices went up when I visited a local Borders yesterday. Duplo Fire Truck used to be $29.99 but yesterday it has a sticker of $34.99. Pretty much everything I checked went up $5. Some have 2 stickers (one on the side, one in the back of the box) with different prices, I guess I can still get the old price if I complain enough.

I am just getting into Lego as I research toys for my 18 month old son. He is geting a lot of Duplos now and I started collecting (and building) Lego Star Wars and Creator and City sets until he is old enough for it.

Anyway, anybody have a Duplo Train Bridge 3774 for sale or trade?
or what if i got gift reciepts in the store?
Gift receipts = store credit only...no cash back or credit to credit card

Actually, I did notice at one of my local Borders that they were repricing certain sets. I didn't get to see the mark up, but I suspect I won't be shopping for Lego over there as much as before. :p I did pick up, after much internal wrangling, a V-19 Torrent from Borders w/33% off coupon. The price of the set was still S@H MSRP (no markup), and since it's OOP, I figured that was as good as I'm going to get.

Just to clarify, if you order anything online through TRU and plan on returning it, it will always be credit for in store returns. So if you plan on doing some sort of buy 1, get 1 50% off and then returning the full priced item it will come back to you as credit ... which I've found is not as valuable as dollars, given TRU normal pricing ;).

Dang, looks like the minifig collecton is now available over in the UK. In the US, the minifig site is also up. Finally, Amazon France is selling Summer 2010 sets as "In Stock" (I don't believe they ship to the US, at least they won't to me--no worries as there's no way in hell I'm paying the exchange rate and shipping just to get a set early).
you gotta be kidding - 7 months of baseball (Apr-Oct) means 'always baseball season' but 8 months of basketball (Nov-Jun) is okay?
Yes, because that 8 days in June make all the difference in the world.

At least in Basketball, there's 48 minutes of play in about 2 and a half hours whereas in boring ass baseball, you got about 8 minutes of actual play in over 3 hours.

Baseball is a thriller, it builds up to the limited action.

This is the problem with today's children, they are always in a rush. Baseball is different every game when basketball is run to this side, shot, run to that side, shot, run back to this side shot. Boring!
Yes, because that 8 days in June make all the difference in the world.
The 2009 NBA Finals ended June 14th, and that series only lasted 5 games. Plus the season had three days of games in October that I left off.

Holy OT Batman!

Do you think Borders is going to extend their coupon for tomorrow? or the weekend?

I'm doubting they'll get some PoP sets, but I'm praying....

They've already extended the 33% off several times in a row...not sure they'll do it again. Might be 20-25% this weekend. :p

As for PoP at Borders...they got Atlantis sets not too long after other places got them. It seems like it is a longer amount of time with this one, perhaps because it is a big license/movie tie-in. I really don't see many other PoP items besides the Lego sets right now and movie isn't slated until next month.

Continuing on w/Borders: I wonder where/how they get their sets? My local store has been stocking and restocking Lego SW CW Magnaguard Starfighters and V-19 Torrents which have been OOP for at least several months now.

Has anyone talked about the new pieces/prices at PaB? They finally have it all up and running. The classic smile face is gone.

Not really a LEGO deal, although depends how you look at it (i.e., buy some LEGOs, get a free book):

Borders is running a promotion through May 1: Spend $30 on anything now in Purchase 1. Then make another $30 purchase, Purchase 2, between May 14 and May 20, and get any book list price $15 or less for free. The good thing is that the book counts toward the $30 total of Purchase 2.

I hope I explained the deal well enough. The sign was fairly confusing so I had to read it a couple of times, and I interpret contracts for a living. If the deal works online (I think it does, but will call the store to confirm), then I'll probably do this a couple of times.

Also, my Borders put out its first Toy Story 3 set, a small yellow dump truck with 129 pieces. The price was $24.99, which seems outrageous. On the plus side, it doesn't look like they increased prices on any of the older sets.

The official price is $20.

I got the email about what you said and didn't understand it at all, so I have no clue who at Border's thought that was a good idea.

I'd consider snatching that up and ebaying it. Those aren't even on S@H yet (linky)

The following 4 sets will be on sale (25% off) next week at TRU. These are sale prices as long as there are no price changes til then.

POP Fight For The Dagger $22.49
POP Battle Of Almut $59.99
TS3 Duplo Great Train Chase $26.24
TS3 Trash Compactor $37.49

Oh snap, that's awesome--thanks prim you da (TRU LEGO) man. I want Fight for Dagger for sure. I may also get another Alamut since $20 is a great discount considering the movie isn't even out yet...

I'll be picking up 2 of these

and one of these.

Thanks for the heads up

Anybody get the new Lego VIP email yet???

You get 5 bonus points for buying specific SW sets until May 12.

5 bonus points???????????????????????????????????????????????

So if you buy 20 ARC Starfighters you will earn a $5 reward!

I think it's meant to be 50, just a typo. If I remember correctly the May calendar said 50 points for Star Wars something. I didn't pay attention because I don't care about Star Wars.

Border's marked up all the Lego prices...even higher than TRU!

SW Droid Tri-fighter $30, should be $25.

SW Tie-Defender $63.99, should be $50.

After seeing these two prices I just gave the coupon to a person next to me and left.

Called 3 other stores after getting home and one still had the old prices tagged so this may be YMMV...for now.

If your store has the old prices, use that coupon while you can.

I love the Border's coupon email.

Great gifts for grads....

The Naked Roommate: And 107 Other College Issues you might have.
A Dr. Seuss book that they trying to say is $18. What the fuck?!

That explains my college experiences.

I just check my two borders and they haven't increased the prices yet, so maybe it's coming....

Picked up the Atlantis Gate with the giant squids. could not convince my wife to get Woody's Roundup.

The larger Borders in my area was status quo on prices for now--still at S@H prices. I ended up getting another V-19 torrent. >_<

I didn't check the prices on the smaller one where I saw the lady re-tagging the sets.
