Let's be real here, when they were priced at MSRP and we were all using the 40% off coupons, Borders was losing money on each set that was sold (lots of it). It was inevitable that they would have to raise the prices but the thing is, even with the higher prices, when they run a 40% off coupon you can still get some good deals. The TS3 train for example; Border's price is $94.99 so taking 40% off of that brings it down to $56.99. That's still over 25% off of MSRP!
With as few sales as Legos get, Borders+coupons are still one of the best deals around.
Sorry, I'm with Husher on this one. It's a slipperly slope they're on.
Honestly, all I care about is the deal. Borders can easily exclude the toys from the coupon like they do pretty much any non-book item that they're really afraid of losing money on if it was that much of a problem.
People don't go to Borders to buy toys, those are just "while you're here, why don't you check this out" type of stuff. Marking up that extraneous stuff way over every other store is more of a losing proposition IMO as no one is going to impulse buy or "while I'm here I'll just grab this" at those kind of prices any more.
Anyway you can't sell me on "if it's 40% off a 20% markup, that's still 20% off!" marketing garbage. Just give a 20% off MSRP.
And really, it's not like they have 40% offs on a regular basis.
