Australia.

I think they sell 8 discs of Blu-ray a month and 4 HD DVD titles
Haha!

Never mind!

My favorite part of that story was the follow-up blog that said Sony execs acted like "stunned mullets" when they heard the news.

I don't know if it's true, and I don't care. That expression is fucking awesome!

Don't forget Crimson Tide, from that same announcement (no specific date mentioned, just February). Three of my faves.
...Never seen either movie. Any good?
They're EXCELLENT. Con Air is kinda dumb. I don't mean that in a derogatory way at all--it's a fantastic mindless action flick with a lot of good comedy to boot. The Rock is fantastic all around. Great story, great action, fantastic on-location shots at Alcatraz. And definitely the best Ferrari/Hummer chase ever caught on film. :)

Both films have a fantastic cast. Con Air has John Malkovitch, Ving Rhames, John Cusack, Nick Cage, Steve Buchemi, Danny Trejo, etc etc. The Rock also has Nick Cage, with Sean Connery, Ed Harris, Michael Biehn, David Morse, and the late John Spencer.

Crimson Tide (same announcement) is another great one. One of the best submarine movies of all time, with Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman facing off as First Officer and Captian, respectively, of a nuclear sub at the dawn of what could be World War III.

I like them, Their both your typical action movie. The Rock has Sean Connery in it who does an awesome job, and has his awesome one-liner and Con-Air is the same way. They are both movies I liked a lot, and The Rock is definietaly Miachael Bay's best movie, which isn't saying much I know.
:)

Con-air has one of the greatest lines ever "Ohh nothing makes me sadder than the agent losing his bladder, on the AIIIIRRRPLANE"

Ive seen parts of Con Air before...I'll rent these at the very least, or wait until a BOGO to buy them. I'm not much of an 'action movie' guy so I tend not to watch movies like that.

I'd probably pick up The Rock.

Here are the numbers for last week.

Wow, first week I've COMPLETELY blown my prediction. Over the previous 10 weeks, I've averaged about 2 points off, never more than 4. This week I was off by 8. Guess I'm officially out of the contest on AVS....

Not shocked at all to see BR won the week out.

What IS shocking is that crap like Fantastic Four beat out 28 Weeks Later (Yeah, may be crap to some...but FF:SS was horrid).

The first wasn't so great but it has a Campy quality. I imagine sooner or later the first Fantastic Four movie will be big with the Gay Community.

First off, what do those numbers mean?

And 2nd, Gizmo, FF: ROTSS wasn't that bad, it wasn't great, but for what it is, a family orienteded comic movie, it delivers and was 100x better than the first one, (which isn't saying much).

The numbers are...odd.

The title that sells the most on either format gets a 100%.
So lets say FF:SS sold 10k copies it would be at 100%
Now lets say "Surfs Up" sold 8,600 copies it would be 86%

That's a horrible way to show what sold what in my mind.

Yeah, most everyone agrees. Its tough to see how many actual copies sold for each title.

A crap movie like The Condemned may have been 45% that week, but that may have only been 3,500 copies

Transformers is sure to be 100% for last week...but how many copies were sold? What will #2 be?

If I had to guess on Transformers, I would say 100,000. 300 did 90'000 it's first week and I can't see Transformers, a movie that was panned more by the critics and audiences, doing THAT Much better. And Number 2 will most definitaly be POTC: DMC with the B1g1 free sale.

Did Transformers make more money at the B.O. that 300? I still say 120k is what I expect to see it at. Transformers is almost a guarantee buy for HD DVD owners, and it sold HD DVD players to people who previously only owned Blu-ray. Guess we'll see...

I doubt you will see any of the BOGO titles in the top 10. I imagine movies like 300, Planet Earth, FF:SS, 28 Days, Evan etc. will still be in it. I'll go ahead and say maybe POTC:DMC at #10

I don't know, they seem to be selling pretty well with the b1g1 free. Yeah Transformers did more, but I don't know if that necessarily will turn into Hi-def buy's. But, we shall see.

Transformers' box office was more than 50% larger than 300's. $318M US/$701M worldwide vs. $211M US/$456M worldwide.

Transformers 190K first week?!

Doesn't explicitly say 'sold through' or 'sold to customers' so they may be shipped numbers.
Probably get more info soon.

Guess you have to factor in how many neutral folks bought the HD DVD this time around when normally they'd buy the BD.
Transformers 190K first week?!
Wow. I don't think that the B1G1 BR bonanza will even put a dent in those numbers. Looks like it'll be at least and 80/20 week for HD.

Of course, Paramount could have sold 570,000 copies if they were format neutral. ;)

Speaking of format neutral.......

The announcement of the 40GB PS3 had the desired effect.......they scared me into snatching one of the 60GBs on clearance this past weekend (with Heavenly Sword and the remote free). I was planning to go neutral next year (Feb-March-ish), but had $400 in BB gift cards to burn. By next spring when good combo players like the BD-UP5000 are going for $600 online, they'll still be selling for MSRP of $1050 (or maybe "discounted" to $999) at BB, so I figured that'd be a waste of gift cards anyway.

So while my preferred cases (for Warner, anyway) will still be red, there will be a smattering of blu in there from now on. Now to pick out the free movies. Category 1 is easy (Prestige FTMFW!!), I already have 2 of the 3 from category 2 on HD (and the third is a bad transfer that is being replaced later this month). The rest are pretty craptastic. I'm thinking Stir of Echoes, SWAT and Hart's war, but haven't decided 100% yet.

I thought my 120k estimate was a bit too high....yikes. This title will have legs on it and continue to sell (300 like) for several weeks. Looks like Transformers may be the new #1 HighDef selling title.

As for 80/20....doubtful. I'm gonna go for 63HD/37BR.

I would say big numbers for Spidey 3 coming, but it'll be wedged between people buying Spidey 3 standalone and the trilogy box set.

And thanks for buying a PS3 geko.

Now every regular HD DVD supporter in here has a PS3 except Sporadic.

Stir of Echoes was okay, but it's a pretty typical late-90's M Night Shamylan (sp?) kinda "twisty" suspense film, so it's really only good for one watch-through. I'd go with American Psycho for that category.

Category 2 and 4 are pretty underwhelming to me, and I'd go with Omen for category 5. That's me though.

Welcome to being format neutral...its by far the best way to go. Now, if you are a horror fan, you have a huge selection of great classic movies.

I'd be shocked if Spider-Man 3 sells more then 80k the first week. For one its being packaged with a PS3. Two its available in a boxset which is the only way to get the more desirable Spider-Man 1 and 2. Three, well, its Spider-Man 3.

Nahh...not anytime soon.

vermin has interest in only 3 movies, "The Big Lebowski" being one of them, but won't name the other 2.

Isn't Chinatown on HD DVD?

That "dying format" just outsold your biggest movie. I don't think even you can spin that into a positive for Blu-ray. Transformers will continue to sell through the Holidays.

Sorry, I won't be joining RED anytime soon.
Not enough interest save a couple titles.

If there's a super cheap, 2nd hand player out there, I may pick it up.
But then I'd only buy the HD DVDs I wanted to see used, so as to not support it.
wow... simply wow
Having two formats has reduced me to sneaky measures.

Gizmo.
Yeah, I've been reading alot about this new multimedia player with 360 hardware built in.

Sounds like the Sony PSX, Nintendo/Panasonic Q.

If it gets released by holidays next year, it'll be too late for furthere HD DVD penetration in the way PS3 has worked for BD.
I'd actually love to get that version of the 360, but I'm not waiting that long.
