if someone is claimed when they are on the waivers, there is 2 options. I will use andrew jones as an example....first, the brave can take him off a waivers and keep him. They may due this, as they might have put andrew on the waiver wire to see who was interested in him, and resume talks in the off-season. The other option is, the brave let him go via a trade. Now there are 2 types of waivers, unconditional/irrevocable, meaning if someone puts a claim in, the original club gets nothing in return. Boston did this with manny a couple years back, they would let him walk without any return on him. It was assumed they did this to free up salary, and to prove a point to manny. Andrew jones was claimed and awarded to a team. The braves have until 8/5 to make a decision to trade him. They are in a bit of a bind, as jones comes a 10/5 guy on the 15th and will have the ability to veto a trade. He has one year left at 13.5 mill, which is cheap for a of with his numbers. The braves will be sold in the near future, and current ownership may want to dump high priced salaries. Or if they don't compete next year they might want to move him for prospects at the deadline. Who ever claimed/awarded jones, is in the drivers seat, as if the braves don't work out a deal, he will not be able to be moved the rest of this season, and with the 10/5 status, jones may veto any trades in the off-season or next year.
