Lost Odyssey - Gen. Discussion & Info

So I've broken the 100 hour barrier, and still no treasure trove. This achievement, has been probably the most disappointing/frustrating thing i have enocuntered since getting my 360.

I'm pretty convincered there is something missable that is pure luck if you happen to get it. i know this isn't an accurate science, but mygamercards standings for this game haven't budged in days

http://www.mygamercard.net/leaderboard.php?gt=&g=396&z=&c=27&x=77&y=3

Those same 13 have been on top for a week or so now..half jp version, several suspiciously look like cheated accounts (120k+ gamer score, no dates on the achievements) Meanwhile, it is slow going but more people are adding to the 980 list every day.

I've been rpgaming my entire life..and there is no way I am this bad at them to not have found the item I'm missing by now. 3 times minimum through every area again, WITH strat guide in hand.....something isn't kosher about this achievement.

I'm gonna add to the Lost Odyssey Case drama. I rented it first so I could make sure I liked it before plunking down the cash (needless to say, I bought it the next day). Anyways...take a look at Blockbuster's case for the game. Come on M$...if blockbuster can do it, I'm sure you can too. Sorry bout the lousy pics, camera phone.

So anyways about the game itself...I'm gonna go out on a limb and say this game has pretty much restored my faith in J-RPG's. After the 'meh' Eternal Sonata (finished) and the pretty lousy Blue Dragon and Enchant Arm (couldn't bring myself to keep playing either one after about 5 or 6 hours).

I'm pretty sure thats how the rest of the world got the game too, in those kinds of cases. Only in america did we get that peice of shit stacked discs with a 4th in a sleeve.

I appreciate the case pictures (wow, Blockbuster doing something that makes sense for a change?) but you lost me on that last part - Blue Dragon was excellent.

Hohez - how do you feel about that lousy "balance" of achievements for Blue Dragon now?. I'm a bit pissed at that game only in that it glitched me out of the monster achievement. I have ALL of them including the hard-to-finds except for one mandatory boss which for some reason didn't show in my list. I can do a New Game + and get him I suppose, but it probably means 6-8 hours of play to get to that point again just for 25 points or whatever it is which is highly annoying.

What I'm finding annoying about Lost Odyssey is the combination of puzzle-type areas like Tales of Symphonia with the prevalence of random battles. I appreciate the puzzle aspects (pulling various levers, avoiding pits, etc) as that mixes up the gameplay a bit. But to combine that with random battles is pure torture. It means every time you run back and forth between puzzle elements to solve something you get interrupted with a battle. After a certain point you should at least be able to have an area "clear". See, for example, Blue Dragon ;).

But overall I love the game - it is just a minor irritation.

Can someone tell me how to make the little stone elevators in Crimson Forest work?

It's pissing me off and I need it to find one of the last spells.

Have Mack in party, touch the little glowing orb in front of the elevator you get off after killing the boss.

How do people feel about the dream sequences?

Personally while they are decently written and sometimes well presented............. It feels like lazy development. At the very least it should have been vocally narrated.... dunno.... I just kind of expect more from this medium.........

Who knows, maybe years from now they'll re-make this game with cutscenes for the dream sequences :)

Yeah, I see your point, and i hope Mistwalker doesn't become a company of great RPGs but notoriously annoying achievements.

I still love the game, and it's the best RPG I've played in a long time. But as an RPG completist, this is basically like having sand thrown in my eyes during a fair fight. I understand now, the double edged sword for someone who must do absolutely everything in his games.

Zoglog - I love the dream sequences. they were honestly one of my favorite parts of a game. I would have liked them to be spoken sure, but at the same time, they have some pretty heavy stuff, and I think I'd rather have them in my own head, than risk the chance of unfeeling or poor quality narrative.
So what are these "seeds" that i keep on finding for
Give them to pipots you find in towns.

They're little rabbits that live in pots.

For the seeds.....read a few posts up, you're supposed to give them to the pipots. You get good stuff from them at particularly useful times.

I have to say I wouldn't want them spoken. I think the mood is set wonderfully by the artwork, sound effects, and text animations. I have been skipping most of them because my son is watching me play and the length (and heaviness) of those sequences is not for him ;). But I intend to read the rest at some point on my own.

I think so too. I wasn't 100% sure what I'd feel about them either, but they're well done. Well written, and the music and the way they play with the text is neat.

Really this game's story just DESTROYS every other Japanese RPG aside from Sakaguchi's other stuff. Most J-RPGs are really, really weak in the writing department (and I don't think most people admit that...)

I think the problem is the rate at which they occur which can be back to back or in the middle of moments when you just want to move on. Sure you can go back to them and skip them, but I have a feeling i'll never go back to em ;)

Personally I would've loved cut-scenes.

mistwalker should send a few of you guys some $ youve convinced me on this game.

I dont ever buy guides, but i think ill need one for this game if its decent as far as missables go.
normally id use the internet but i will be without access when im playign this game.

The guide is pretty good, i feel it was money well spent. It is debatable if there are any permanently missable items or not. I have a theory about 2 temporary chests and i've heard some people say at gamefaqs that 2 spells are in fact missable if you dont buy em at one point.

The one thing the guide does well is it tells you every side thing available when it becomes available. At the end of chapters etc it has a post mortem section that lists new things that are available in the area.

There is a constant flow of new things to search and small mini-side quests in each town.

Care to elaborate on the 2 spells? I've just started disc 3 and I have yet to see a spell for SALE anywhere - it seems they are all found in chests. I've made it a habit to buy any accessory I don't already have - but it seems like the shops have weapons, items, accessories, and ring parts and that's it.

I hit up my first auction house too. I didn't realize it would drag regular things out from their hiding places (I though it would just be "high end" items). Apparently I missed some things in the Sea of Baus area - stuff like Healing Potions, etc... I also didn't realize until I played around with it more that even if you lose out on an auction you get to bid on it again! D'oh! And here I was quitting and reloading several times so I wouldn't miss something. At least it was only 5 items - not too bad. Hopefully that's everything I've missed up to this point.

Some are saying shieldus and barricadus are missable, but i can't confirm it since I got em as soon as i saw them. Apparantly you can miss them in experimental staff.

Well, crap, I just finished that not too long ago. I was worried about that place as it started to collapse at the end - figured it wasn't revisitable. But what is this about purchasing the spells there - they are in chests, right? That's not too far back and I can replay it if I have to. I just finished up stuff in the town afterwards and started the Ice Canyon last night. I'd only lose 2 hours or so to go back there. I don't remember getting those but I'll have to check the Spell list to see.

It was pretty damn maddening to have that timer at the end of Experimental Staff and then find NEW chests to open. Yikes... I could see missing something there though I was pretty thorough before that and think I went everywhere.

You can buy them in the auction house on the pier of Saman in disk 3 or 4. It may not show them right away for auction though.

Yeah, my curiosity got the better of me so I just fired up the 360 to check - I DO NOT have those spells. Dammit... So where in Experimental Staff are they? I just did the auction house in Saman (for disc 3, anyway) and did not see them there. I'd just assume go back and redo the end of ES and the stuff I did in Saman (the auction house and a few mini-sideqeusts) than worry about that later. I have the save from right before the final fight on ES so I should be able to get it from there and then just redo the end. But, like I said, I went everywhere (so I thought) so where are they?

Well, damn - I went in there and thought I bought some stuff. Oh well... I guess I'll backtrack and do that. Sure, maybe I can get it later but I might as well do it now.

Also, hohez (concerning the Treasure Trove achievement), I found this post on xbox360achievements.org:

OH MY GOD I FINALLY GOT THE ACHIEVEMENT. My long, sleepless nights are over. Thank God, thank God. It was in the seabed afterall, to think I've missed 2! Thanks to Stebs for that advice. I gave it a thought, I've spent hours on towns and dungeons, why not on the seabed? It was a silly mistake on my part. But all's well that ends well. The moment the achievement acquired button appeared, it was a feeling of sheer joy lol.

So yeah aside from chests - seabed items, pots and everything counts. At least now we know that the Money-Money chests that disappear once you face Money-Money himself doesn't count. To be sure, fight Money-Money, at least his own chest probably counts, but definitely not the other two that spawns along with him.

It was a ridiculous pain in the ass, I'd give myself a pat if I could hehe but it was all because I'm looking in the wrong places, and now we know it's totally not missable (for information's sake, I think that is progress lol). Anyway, good luck Space Cadet and just let me know if I can be of any help later on.

Yeah thanks for the heads up, but I have everything on the seabed. i literally spent over 4 hours searching it between my stints..I've even checked the open ocean in which theres nothing there.

So unless it's an unmarked seabed treasure, i have no clues.

All 99 seeds, all 49 possible slot seeds, all hidden chests, all music scores, all spells, all treasure hunts

105 hours, and I'm seriously at a loss for what else i can try. I've gone through every area 3 times minimum.

I'll fire up the game and look for those spells from a merchant...post again in a minute --update-- The only spell i see on the ghotzan merchant in disc 4 is ground mine.

Dang, i dont know if i could go for that achievment. Seems like tedious work. GL to anyone that goes for it though.

And can anyone tell me. Im almost to the end of disk 3(i think) and i only have like 4 achievments so far. Disk 1, Disk 2, ring builder, and 3 perfects in a row. Does that sound right? Most are secret achievments so im not sure. Am i suppose to have this little bit?

Watch a 1000 year dream to get one. Also if you are even remotly decent with perfects, you should be approaching 500 perfects and 1000 kills decently soon.

Should also have skill linker for linking a skill from a human

Oh yeah, i have the 1000 dreams first one, and also the skill linker. But thats like, 5/30 or whatever it is. Am i gonna have to really keep playing after i beat the game to get most of the acheivments or will i get most while finishing the game first run through?

Achievement spoilers
9 are skill achievements. getting each mortal to 52 gets their achievements and thats easy, teaching each immortal all skills takes a LONG time, and you cannot complete it without doing every single side quest

5 are backyard achievements..think of the backyard as an arena of sorts

7 are optional boss, and all but one are pretty cake to get to and beat
joy, grinding on Silver Kelons to level 45 at the beginning of disk 2 makes things much easier :)
dude, everytime one of those popped up, they would always run away on their first turn. How the hell do you keep yours there.
joy, grinding on Silver Kelons to level 45 at the beginning of disk 2 makes things much easier :)
I found out about that Numara Atoll off another board and went there mid disc 3. There are 2 things there that you can use to level up - the Silver Kelolons and a Hell-something-or-another.

As for the Kelolons running away they are much like the platinum slimes (I think?) in DQ VIII - they run away most of the time but occasionally they attack and that's when you need to hit them hard. I just discovered the use of the Gamble spell and use it all the time now - for them, for the Hellbeasts, and for a couple of bosses since then.

I didn't quite get everyone to level 45 but I went from 32 to 42 or so (in less than an hour - so I wouldn't even really call it "grinding"). It sure made the bosses after that super easy, though nothing was too hard before that anyway (I did the Ice Canyon before leveling up - no probs there).

I did get insta-killed in one place later though. It was in the Uhra Sewer:
So you are in there with just Seth and Tolten (who is low-level since you just got him) and there is a path that leads out of the sewer and onto a ledge of the Secret Cave. There's just a chest in there and you can see the rest of the cave below but can't get there yet. As I was going back to the exit I had a random encounter occur. It was 5 "Experiment 42's" (or some other number - can't remember). My initial attack didn't even kill the first one and then they attacked and instantly petrified both characters - game over . I had to go back to my save in the Inn. That was pretty surprising as I hadn't experienced that in this game yet - that is, stumbling upon an area I wasn't "supposed" to be in yet and getting destroyed - that is very old-school RPG there. Out in the sewer the encounters are super-easy (just the guards and their attack dogs), but make that little transition through the wall and it is a whole different matter! I went back again to get the chest when I reloaded and got in and out without an encounter.

Well I just finished disc two and I must say I think this is going to end up being one of my favorite games. So far it is my favorite game on the 360. The story is TOP notch, the music is great, I absolutely love this game and I'm glad I picked it up.

I'm mid-way through Disc 3 and I have to agree. I'm not sure if I like it more than Blue Dragon or not but I defintely think it is one of the best 360 games. I'm definitely glad I decided to pick it up - the reviews and Cheapy's dissing of it (I'm just listening to CAGcast #107 right now) almost made me not get it but I'm glad I ignored all that ;).

Glad to hear all the praise, especially in regards to Blue Dragon. I really loved Blue Dragon, so I'll be picking this one up. Is this one as stingy with the achievement points as BD was?

Not as much as Blue Dragon but a few in particular will take a bit of effort. Most notably the treasure achievement which requires you to examine basically every square inch of the game. Other than that, pretty much learning all the skills on all immortal party members. Which takes some effort in finding all items in the game. However that one is made much easier if you start with a seed guide.

Draekon pretty much covered it. But note that unlike Blue Dragon, you will get 500 points simply for playing through the story (125 at the end of each disc). I think it was possible in Blue Dragon to complete the game without getting a single achievement, which is pretty remarkable, actually. Plus there's a couple more that are very simple (create a ring, link a skill, find the first dream - the last one is also automatic, the others take 10 seconds to do). So there's about 600 that are easy (given you play through the whole game) and another 100-200 that aren't too hard (level up the mortal characters, kill 1000 enemies, etc). Besides the ones at the end of each disc, though, you tend to get a chunk at the beginning and then nothing for a long while - and then presumably a bunch more near the end (the enemies, level cap, spell book, etc, ones).

That's acceptable. I don't mind stingy games, but Blue Dragon was ridiculous. Story milestones should be achievements imo, so I'm glad to see that's in place. Looks like a pick up for me when the backlog clears a bit.

Yeah, with the amount of games people start and then never finish (and I've done plenty of this myself) I think the 500 points for hitting various story milestones is a perfect balance in this game - especially given that it is a longer game than most. I think more story-driven games should be like this - make it 500 for completion (with that split amongst the chapters or levels or whatever) and 500 more for various harder-to-get goals.

Ah, JRPGs really aren't his thing so he sort of parroted the CV that it is a decent RPG that does nothing to advance the genre, whatever that means. He was basically just summarizing the general feel of the reviews. I always have to remember to ignore most people's negativity on RPGs (and likewise downplay their positivity on FPS and other shooters) to suit my own tastes.

I am somewhat surprised the review scores for this game average less than 80 (something he mentioned as support for the point that it is a good but not great game) but that's neither here nor there ;).

Back to the achievements: It was somewhat remarkable but last night around hour 40 I hit 3 of the "longevity" achievements all within an hour or so of each other (in this order): 500 perfect hits, 1,000,000 total damage, and 1000 enemies killed. It was wierd to see all of those pop up in the same session. Given that I'm still on Disc 3 that makes those ones pretty attainable for most people without any grinding. Too bad they are only 10 points though.

And dammit, Chacrana, even though what you mention seems like an obvious story point (since I've seen the generation of those things by whats-his-face in Disc 3), please mark what your spoiler is about before the tag otherwise we have no idea if we should click on it or not (like, say "spoiler for Disc 4" or something).

Edit - Interesting little quirk on Metacritic right now:

103 Blue Dragon 2007 79
104 Lost Odyssey 2008 78

Lazy reviewers who just give JRPGs good-but-not-great scores? I dunno... IMO instead of those being the 103rd and 104th best 360 games they are two of my favorite - I just thought it was wierd they were right next to each other though. Eternal Sonata ALSO has a 79 rating but is listed at 93rd for some reason (it isn't alphabetical so I don't know how they rank when things are tied like that). Actually there's a hell of a lot of games with 79 scores strangely enough.

That sucks - definitely good advice though ;). I was in a pretty long stretch last night where I couldn't find a save point. I just wanted to stop for the night and it kept going and going (in the Burning Cave).
