Lost Odyssey - Gen. Discussion & Info

So I'm watching the credits roll right now. lots of ending spoilers after the button.

I really liked how the story kind of evolved through the course of the game. it starts out 100% focused on Kaim, but near the end of it, jansen and Ming sort of take center stage. All of the characters generally got their important moments and character building.

Aside from Sarah, who near the end was just kind of there. Loved Gongora as the main villain. His motivations kind of come off, how should i put this, I dunno, fuzzy in the end. But overall I enjoyed a villian who didn't have long flowing white hair, and a high pitched shrill voice.

87:37 completion time. i didn't get the treasure achievement, and probably won't. The best RPG I've played in a long time.

OK, so I'm 8-9 hours in and liking it so far. My only gripe - the static camera. Man, that makes searching for those incredibly hard-to-find pots/posters/apples/whatever very difficult. And since it seems I need to open/examine all of those types of things it would have been nice to have full control of the camera (like in Blue Dragon).

I also found out my case is cracked and a hole is punched into the back. Fortunately it seems to have just missed that third disc, but we'll see for sure once I get to that ;). There's pretty much no return (or exchange, in any case) since I bought it at a regular Blockbuster and they only will ever get the 1 copy.

Do you HAVE to find all that stuff, or is that just for completionists? I'm not going out of my way.

I know I'm entering dangerous territory here, because I don't have it. But the pre-order bonus is coming out on the marketplace later, right? I read it like it was this way in the OP, but I don't know.

Gaaaaahh I want to continue playing this game but I have too much work to do for right now. I haven't played it in over a week because I was on a ski trip, but I have a question. I'm stuck at the part where you have to fight the guards to save those two kids, any tips on how to beat that part? Also, how close am I to finishing the first disc?

It's suppose to be, at a cost I think. Though I believe you can download the pre-order stuff from the japanese marketplace for free right now and it supposedly works just fine on NA consoles.

Preorder bonus is also obtainable via by Xbox marketplace. I believe you can also obtain that item without code, but it takes a little work to get it. Quite frankly, I won't pay money for these virtual items.

I am hoping to pick this game up eventually, but i am still working on blue dragon where i am about 54 hours into, and then after that is Eternal Sonata which i am about 5 hours into. Hopefully it'll drop in price when ever i get around to playing it. Id love to get it around $30 when i do get around to buying it.

Supposedly downloading it from the Japanese Marketplace does work (The free DLC). I'll download it after I get done with what I'm doing in Blue Dragon. You know, so in case, they start charging for it, I'll have it.

Nice, I'll have to snag that later. So, what is it?

I have a Japanese profile that I haven't used since I got the Katamari demo.

Never mind. I guess it is this:
Gamers who buy a pre-order card for Lost Odyssey will also get a download code for an additional mission and an unlockable weapon, redeemable on Xbox Live Marketplace after the game releases. The download will be available to the general public in the spring.

I just took my first look at the achievements. Most seem pretty easily attainable by just playing through the game. But I have no idea what this is:

Light Class Master (10 points)
Meet the secret requirement of the Backyard Light Class battle set and win.

And of course there are other ones like that too. Also, what does it take to master all of Kaim's (and the others) skills? Is it just putting on various accessories and skill linking to every available mortal skill you have? Is there anything else I should be doing early on to make this easier? I switch out accessories and skill links whenever they get learned - the only problem is I'm pretty much out of new things to learn now (end of disc 1).

And what about for the mortals - is that simply a matter of levelling up until they learn all skills? I don't think you can do anything with them to get them to learn new skills other than that, right?

Backyard fights are sidequest arena-type battles that you don't have to worry about until disc 4.

Yes, to get that Kaim (or any other immortal) achievement, you have to learn every ability in the game, which requires you to find just about every treasure in the game and beat all the sidequest bosses.

It's going to be very hard to do.

And as far as mortals learning every skill, you just need to level them up.

The backyard is just an arena type thing. There's 4 different weight classes and 1 super boss.

And yeah thats pretty much it on learning skills. It takes a long long time to do it with the immortals, since there are something like 170 skills.

Mortals, you are correct, just level them to 52.

The treasure trove achievement is a cancer on this games beautiful skin. Some things to keep in mind. When you first go underground in the crimson forest, push the bolder in the right room, into the left room and onto the elevator. This gives you a key item not listed in the guide.

Something else I am coming to figure out. There is apparantly one thing you can fuck up and keep yourself from getting the treasure trove achievement. It has to do with an optional boss so I'll spoiler it.

In the ancient temple, you run into enemies called money. you have to let them steal gold from you to get a hidden boss called money money to appear. To get to him you have to go to the terrace cave and follow the trail of gold. Now here's the rub. The guide says there are 3 chests..the first 2 contain 1g, and the third one contains money money. Fighting him gets your money back and killing him nets you one of the backyard guide books.

Problem I have run into is I never got the 2 chests with 1g in them, because i looked all over and could not find them anywhere. So I went and killed money money..guide says you can return to him later on if you get stolen from again so I thought no worries. Well it seems that killing money money stops the moneys from stealing. i have tried for 2 hours today to get one to steal, even going so far as to leave them slivers from death in the same battle for 30 minutes and still no steal.

It could also be that beating the trooky queen stops the moneys from stealing, as she stops the trookys in the ancient temple from stealing after her defeat.

I of course may be missing something else, but i doubt it. I followed the guide to a T, and have further spent approaching ten hours on finding stuff i missed. Something to keep in mind when you get to disc 4 and are starting side quests.

apparantly they each contain 1 gold, and yeah I'd suggest opening them before the last one to be safe, cause i think im screwed here, even though im still looking.

All the rest of the chests in that area have items etc in them..the other 2 and the final appear when theres a gold trail.

-----
Well, I've completely retraced the entire game....10 or so hours retracing my steps and searching for stuff. Every area, I've spent over an hour searching the ocean as well.

My auction house is closed, all seeds, including the seed delivery side quest, all achievements, except fucking treasure trove.

one thing this has taught me, is any rpg developer that makes an rpg without a monster avoid ability, or a teleport out of a dungeon ability should be slapped.
Yes, there are 5 languages in this release.

English, Japanese, French, German, Italian
excellent, I guess that's why it's 4 DVDs :)
looks like I might pick it up

OK, so wait, is that Treasure achievement for opening all treasure chests in the game? And you might have missed it because 2 stupid-assed ones with 1G in them didn't show up? Ugh, that's horrible... At what point (disc number) does all this happen?

Quick question hohez, can I continue playing after beating the game? (I'm not talking about new game+ with all the immortals at level 50, I mean to go searching for treasure chests).

you are correct on the first one, and on the second one...it's not just every chest, its every chest, every trash can, every poster etc....

The part that happened to me is in disc 4 in an optional area. I'm not 100% sure, nor can I be really that those are whats causing it, but it's just something to keep in mind foreveryone else to not take the risk.

No zewone, once you beat it, and save, that save actually turns into a wohl highlands save and starts the game over. So be sure you make an extra save so you can continue sidequest hunting.

well just picked up the game, wow that's some ghetto packaging there. 3 disks jammed in 1 spindle and 1 in a paper cover lol......

Hopefully the long loading times i've heard of aren't too bad. I'll just picture mass effect's elevators

Never played a JRPG before so it took about 3-4 hrs before I settled into the game. Enjoying the combat system, but I don't understand how the timing circle work for the attack move. When exactly is one supposed the hit RT?

It's actually a hold and release. You release when the outer ring is perfectly over the inner ring.

30 hours in, on Disc 4.

I've basically ignored all side quests except for a couple. I'm going to slow down my playing and try to get things that I missed and do some more exploring of places I've been, etc.

Don't remember the last time I had this much fun playing a j-rpg. Tales of the Abyss was the last one I finished, but I felt that it dragged in some spots and I was glad for it to be over. I'm not ready for LO to be over yet :(

The sidequests will take just as long as the main game. :D

wow apparently the load times aren't bad at all. I read up and turns out reviewers all got an older build. The only annoying glitches i've seen so far is when put on Japanese voices, the lips don't always sync up well, like the timing is off.

So far it's been ok, the whole book reading is a bit off putting but it's ok. And that first boss... wtf... that kind of pissed me off. Kind of amusing how Sakaguchi died when he was demoing the game and the boss is just as hard as it was then. he did 2 of the attack all attacks in a row the first time I played through....

Thankfully they got some great western game improvements in this game
#1 Run button!!
#2 Checkpoints OMG!!

so i'm up to 95 hours now. Can't seem to let this go.

Some things I have found that aren't listed, or i missed in the guide. All of these are available during disc 4.

Burning Cave
Return to the dock are of the burning cave, and on a small island near the exit to the path of strange rocks, there is a mana item on the ground.

Uhra
Return to Gongora's study by taking either elevator up, and there is an item on his desk and 2 chests.

Numara
Take the 3 tablets of the eastern tribe to a man in the art salon, and he will give you some meaningless component items

In Canal Street, the girl you previously played hide and seek will be trying to join the kids club. You have to help her find a treasure to get her in. Go to the port, and in the very back right you will find her behind some crates. Talk to her and then head abck out and to the east, almost directly left along the fence and you will find a shell on the ground. This will allow her into the kids club and will get you some more meaningless components.

These go along with my previously mentioned Money Money problem..which may or may not be an error in the guide, and the way to acquire one of the tablets near the end of disc 1.

i haven't had anyone confirm the money money problem, but i did have someone on gamefaqs confirm there are more than one path for the coin trail. Don't know if that really matters or not though.

If I needed any other achievement, but this one and had to new game+ it i wouldn't hesitate at this point. But I don't know how much faster new game + is going to be when I still have to scour every single item from every area. hard to justify an imediate replay when I don't even know if the money money thing is missable, or user error.

#2 Checkpoints OMG!!
That's great they added that stuff. THANK GOODNESS for the checkpoints thing. I would have probably given up during the first boss for sure if not for that. That's funny Sakaguchi even had problems with it-I mean how COULDN'T you? I don't know what they were thinking with these boss fights. I'd be happy if they were all HALF as difficult (at least).

I was wondering if the version we have is different from the one that reviewers were complaining about in regards to load time. I mean ours isn't GREAT, but it seems fairly comparable to other big Japanese RPGs, and I doubt I would have thought it was anything unusual. I'm thankful for the fairly low encounter rate though! Seems like an obvious thing to have a low encounter rate that gives you more experience that developers should have been doing a looooong time ago.

Frankly I don't really care if I can see enemies ahead of time so much as I care about the encounter rate/tediousness of leveling up.

The checkpoint system only really works with bosses. Don't rely on it otherwise and always save or you'll likely come to regret it.

I should probably finish the grinding of the last of my mortals to level 52 or whatever. Then go and grind the last of their skills onto my immortals.

OK, so what is the first boss that everyone is complaining about? I remember a few challenging fights early on but nothing I didn't handle on the first or second attempt. I've died a handful of times (though I'm still just starting disc 2), mostly from running out of MP. But I don't see a problem with the early fights - a little challenge is nice and it certainly isn't hard. But like most JRPG's it seems to be somewhat challenging at first when your HP is so low, then easier as you level up. Though I could say the same of Mass Effect.
The first boss isn't bad at all (it's the griffin, io).

I beat it on my first try.
I honestly don't even remember that . I remember fighting a war machine in the very beginning... Oh, is the griffin the thing in the mountains on your way out of Uhra? Yeah, OK, that was slightly engaging and I remember blowing through some items (which I normally don't use) and coming close to dying, but it was nice to be challenged since most people complain turn-based combat is boring - a challenge and needing to use every tactic/tool at your disposal is what makes it more interesting.
I just rented this game, and died at the Griffin three times.

I suck
I died at it three times two. First time I died in two turns, second and third I died in three or something like that. Fourth time I literally took like 200 damage total.

Since then I've had little to no problem. The occasional spike because of new monsters but they're pretty easy once you figure out the strategy and level up quickly after you start flying through the battles.

The Main issue with the first boss is that the only way to really beat it is to use the front people as healers and only attack via fire with the mortal. Otherwise you'll be pummeled.

Also it has quite a bit of luck in effect, It did the attack all twice in a row which is practically impossible to survive (same thing happened to sakaguchi in his demoing of the game)

Either way it's not a well designed boss as there's only one real strategy you can take to beat it if you play through normally (not grind). Hopefully the other bosses in the game won't be quite as annoying.

And bottom line, the first boss you face in any game should not be this difficult.

either way, yay for online faqs and checkpoints, or it would've been far more fustrating
I just rented this game, and died at the Griffin three times.

I replay this game again without game plus, I didn't realize how easy the Griffin was. Generally, the Griffin use area of effect attack on first turn to reduce the team guard defense and start striking Jansen continuously until he dies. If you have one person constantly healing with him potions,an instant item along Jansen spaming flare spells you can defeat that boss with relative ease. This time I was level 12 when I beat him.

Does anyone have ANY tips on the second boss? I swear I'm just mentally challenged and can't get by it.

My strat so far is to kill 2 of the bugs on the first round, and then focus Jansen on the ray boss, while using Kaim and Seth on the bugs. I can kill the first ray without a problem, but I immediately get owned when the second one comes out, whether it be from the stun, or being stunned then the damn bugs using force on me while I have next to no life left.

You need an item called yellow band it gives anti-paralysis immunity. It can be found in The Sea of Baus-Reef Shallows(2 maps for that stage) in middle left section of map. Equip aqua ring and use aqua spell makes the boss much easier. If you manage to get 20 pipot seeds, you can exchange it for good water-based adamantis ring. Cast some spell defense like all barriacade help you as well.

Fatbeer is right on. Keep your health up and whack away two of the five bugs so the big guy doesn't get full charges each time. Oh, and pray that the bugs attack Kaim and don't charge. :)

Backyard Question

Just killed the Immortal One and was given Backyard White Book, which gives no clues as to where to take it or what its for. The normal guy in the room doesn't want it, anyone know what to do with it?

Wow, im on disk 3 now. The main part of the story for this just passed and holy shit. The story just got epic. I am loving this game. Damn.

And i just heard the one of if not the best line in the game by jansen'

When they are being frozen in the train cart and jansen doesnt become frozen, "Wait, maybe i'm immortal. My mom always said i was special"

Whoa, what is the deal with the Pipot and seeds? I have found a few of them (the rabbit-like things) and I see a "Seed" option but it always says 0 and doesn't give me that option to give them. If these are just the regular "Seeds" you find everywhere I have nearly 50. Are you supposed to give these to the Pipots? Or is there some other kind of seed? Is this one of the things you give them more of and you get better prizes each time, or do I need to save them for something good?

On a different topic:
I always thought of myself as pretty thorough but it seems like I missed a ton from the beginning of the game. There was a pretty big gap in my Dreams list and I just figured they were all over the place (in the order). But then I noticed on Disc 2 I've been getting them all in order. I went all over that town in Uhra and did everything I could before I had to leave, yet I'm missing 5-6 dreams right after the first one. And I was poking around on Gamefaqs (since there isn't an official FAQ yet I've just been reading a few threads there) and found out there was a skill slot +5 item you could get in Uhra?? WTF? I swear I did everything there. At least I was able to go back to the crow and get the +3 one from him since I had just boarded the boat when I read up on that. It sure would have been nice to have the +5 thing going now though. Who knows what the hell else I missed...

I did make a second run at that Mantalus creature on the ship (since he got away the first time). I was able to kill him the second time before he ran - got jack squat for it . I was expecting something good for that. Oh well...

The Seed option the Pipots give will give all your Seeds to them. There are 99 in total.

The earliest you can get the first skill slot accessory (+3) is on disk 2. If you miss that one you can get the same one in another spot in disk 3 but that's also a missable item if you continue the story too long as the area it's at will become unaccessable. As for the +5, while it may be in Uhra, you'll have to wait to go back in one of the later parts of the game. Plus in disk 4 you get world travel to hit up all the places you accessed before but aren't able to access now.

So I should just do this whenever I have the chance? It seemed like that option was inactive (grayed out) when I last did it, but maybe not.

OK, well, the gamefaqs people made it sound like you could get it early (someone went "back" to get it because they missed it originally). I was aware I could get back there in Disc 4 but I thought they meant it was originally available earlier. But clearly I must have missed all those early dreams somehow? Or do you not backfill those until Disc 4 as well? I'm missing the 2nd - 6th or 7th (whatever is before the Upstreamers). Everything after that is filled in solidly through the one I just got (right before getting to the Experimental Staff).

Yes, turn in seeds whenever you can, they are cumulative. 99 total in the game and you get a prize at 20.40.60.80. and 99

As for the dreams, yeah you get them in order, but theres some that are tricky. In UHRA you have to go in and out of the tavern a few times and talk to different people and you get 2 or 3 in there alone at the start of the game.

I had to go back and get the 14th or something that i had missed even with the book as my last one later on.

But like most JRPG's it seems to be somewhat challenging at first when your HP is so low, then easier as you level up. Though I could say the same of Mass Effect.

The first boss isn't bad at all (it's the griffin, io).

I beat it on my first try.
There seems to be some luck involved with that boss, because I know for a fact I did used EVERY tool at my disposal and it took five or six tries to beat it. Eventually I got lucky and it just didn't do much damage-so I think some people are getting lucky on their first or second try.

As another poster mentioned, if all three characters are immune to paralyze you should be able to do it. I doubt it's possible otherwise. The second boss battle actually seemed a LOT easier than the first one, although it's no cakewalk.
