AFC Playoff Preview
Locked Up Edition
1. Tennessee Titans, 14-1 (bye)
Week 17 Game: vs CPU
Not only did the Titans cement their place on top of the AFC with wins against the Eagles and Cowboys in the last four weeks of the season, but they also ruined their opponents’ playoff chances at the same time. Relentless. Even as they rest their starters in the final week of the season, Tennessee is officially locked in as the #1 seed and all they have to do now is rest up and wait for their next opponent to be named.
2. New York Jets, 14-2 (bye)
Week 17 Game: def. Patriots
As good as the Jets have been this season, the odds makers knew that it wasn’t wise to bet on them getting through the Bengals, Vikings and Patriots unscathed. And they were right. They fell to the Bengals in Week 15 and just barely hung on against the Patriots in Week 17 to stay on top of the AFC East and hold onto their #2 seed. The defense has buckled down in the final weeks of the season though, allowing only one touchdown to both the Vikings and the Pats. They also look to rest up during the bye week.
3. Baltimore Ravens, 12-3
Week 17 Game: vs CPU
The Ravens are now 0 for 3 in their last few head-to-head games, falling to the Bengals, Saints and most recently the Patriots. Should they be worried? Not necessarily, but they don’t feel as confident as they would like with the playoffs approaching. Barring a meltdown versus the CPU, Baltimore should hold onto their #3 seed and face off against the Bengals in the first round. Most recently, they only lost 17-11, but they are going to need Flacco to take better care of the ball.
4. San Diego Chargers, 11-4
Week 17 Game: vs CPU
Someone wake up the Chargers and tell them the playoffs are almost here! After losing to the Rams last week, they can expect some angry letters sent their way from the NFC North. St. Louis locked in a spot in the playoffs and guaranteed that either the Vikings or the Lions will be watching the playoffs from home. That loss affected them as well, as they no longer have a shot at the #3 seed. The high seed again draws what could be seen as an unfavorable match-up. They will run into the Patriots again, and the last time they met they lost 29-16. Could we see both top seeds fall in the opening round?
5. New England Patriots, 13-3
Week 17 Game: lost to the Jets
So close, yet so far. After having everything fall into place, New England fell 8 points short of winning the AFC East and landing the #2 seed. Their luck isn’t all bad, however, as they are set to take on the Chargers again, and this time someone is going home. Despite the Week 17 loss, the Patriots are one of the hottest teams in the league, going 4-1 in h2h games since their first loss to the Jets. If the Patriots can pull off the first round W, and the Ravens defeat the Bengals, the Pats will avoid the Jets until a potential AFC Championship game, but I can’t imagine the team is rooting to play against the Titans either.
6. Cincinnati Bengals, 10-5
Week 17 Game: vs CPU
Just a few weeks ago we were talking about the potential for the Bengals to fall out of the playoff race completely if they had a rough end to the season. After convincing wins over the Dolphins and the Jets, that’s not the talk around the league anymore. Now the Bengals are poised to enter Baltimore for the second time this season. The teams split the season series, so here comes the tiebreaker! Both of these games have been about minimizing your turnovers and capitalizing on your opponent’s. It sounds obvious, but it’s never been more evident when these two play. If there was a spectator mode in Madden, this game might have the highest ratings this first round. Get yer popcorn ready.
