End of Season Report: New England Patriots
Record: 12-4 (AFC East champs, #2 seed), 5-1 division record, 9-3 conference.
Offense:
22.1 ppg (11th)
290.3 ypg (11th)
163.7 passing ypg (12th)
126.6 rushing ypg (9th)
Passing:
Tom Brady - 188/278, 67.6% (#1 in the league), 2626 yards, 18TD, 16 INT, 95.4 Rating (#3 in the league)
All year I felt like I was fairly useless with Brady, but looking at it now it seems like I wasn't having any problems that most people weren't. The completion percentage was great, and he ended up in the black in terms of TD/INT ratio, which was touch and go for a while. Bottom line, finishing 3rd in QB rating is pretty damned good.
Rushing:
Adrian Peterson - 153 carries, 1010 yards (6.6ypc), 14 TDs. (10 games)
BenJarvus Green-Ellis - 99 carries, 571 yards (5.8ypc), 7 TDs (16 games)
Danny Woodhead - 55 carries, 428 yards (7.8ypc), 4 TDs (6 games)
All of these numbers are Pats only, I took out AP's Vikings numbers (which weren't much). All told, my guys rushed for just north of 2000 yards and 25 TDs on the ground. It's a little funny to see Woodhead's ypc a full yard higher than the superstar he was traded for, but I'm not going to complain about AP getting me over 100y/g and 14TDs over 10 games. This was a damned good running game.
Receiving:
Rob Gronkowski - 53 catches, 760 yards (14.3ypc), 7 TDs
Aaron Hernandez - 39 catches, 689 yards (17.7ypc), 6 TDs
Wes Welker - 38 catches, 485 yards (12.8ypc), 2 TDs
Chad Ochocinco - 23 catches, 397 yards (17.3ypc), 4 TDs
Deion Branch - 19 catches, 239 yards (12.6ypc), 1 TD
Two things to be learned here: I spread the ball around (I think everyone knows that), and I really take advantage of the two TEs. Gronk was the leading receiver despite missing several games, and there were weeks he was the only one who did anything. Other than Welker's smaller than usual number of targets, this is actually a pretty good representation of the distribution of the actual Pats' passing game.
Defense:
10.5 ppg (1st)
203.5 ypg (2nd)
97.2 passing ypg (1st)
106.3 rushing ypg (19th)
It's not hard to look at the above numbers and see what smart opponents are going to try to do to me in the playoffs. My defense allowed only 4 passing TDs all year (Mark Sanchez, Michael Vick, and Peyton Manning twice), which is a crazy stat. No other team gave up fewer than 11. The rush D, though it improved down the stretch, was pretty much the only way to move the ball on my D all year. If anyone wants to take that as a challenge and try to pass the ball all over me in the playoffs, please do.
Perhaps the most impressive part about the Patriots' dominant defense was that it wasn't fueled by turnovers or people filling up the stat sheet. Pat Chung and Ras-I Dowling (who plays safety for me) lead the team with 4 INTs each. Vince Wilfork lead the team with 9 sacks. Their 21 INTs actually ranks near the very bottom of the league, but they gave up the second lowest completion percentage (44.9) and only 5.4 yards per attempt, which adds up to a robust 36.3 QB Rating for opposing QBs, lowest in the league by 10 points. So yeah, please try and pass on this D.
All in all, I'm very happy with how the season went. Other than the early season loss to the Chargers before I had a really good feel for the team, the other three losses were all to playoff teams (Jets, Chiefs, Giants). I also gave the Chiefs their closest call of the year, which helps the confidence. Very good year one in New England, hopefully I can make some noise in the playoffs and then improve on things in the draft.
