Mario Kart Wii - Gen. Discussion & Info
Woot, just one starred all the 50 cc Wii tracks.

Baby Daisy!
That sounds hard. I doubt I'll ever unlock all the characters.

I've been playing online mostly, I'm up to a little over 6000 points in Vs. mode now.

so far this game looks really really good.
the bikes are awsome, there are a bunch of new tracks that i love.
online looks great. no lag, good ranking system.

for numbers.

All right, gots it now!

I added all the people who sent my Wii Friends list invites and I sent out a bunch more as well. Right this very second my kids took over the game from me but I'll be playing a bit later ;).

Just as a trial run, though, I beat the Mushroom Cup - didn't unlock a damn thing! WTF!?
Just as a trial run, though, I beat the Mushroom Cup - didn't unlock a damn thing! WTF!?
...What were you expecting?

Just unlocked 12 (!!) Fast Staff Time Trials -

Got a new heavy Bike, The Spear!

These Time Trials are a real bitch... some of them are easy, some are pretty damn tough.
...What were you expecting?
Um, I was expecting to unlock a character or at least a kart. All the reviews say there is a never-ending stream of unlockables so I'd expect something off the first cup for coming in first place. Seems reasonable to me. What were you not expecting?

You have to work for the unlockables in this game, for the most part.

Which is awesome.. some of them they just hand out, but some of them you have to work pretty damn hard for.

There is a lot of unlockables, but they don't give them to you on cups that are already available.

I'm starting to read through this thread and seeing that now. Man, that kind of sucks. It isn't very kid-friendly of Nintendo to be so stingy with the unlockables. I mean, they go overboard being "kid-friendly" with the stupid friends codes and yet make the games impossible to complete. Wierd. Not that I don't appreciate a challenge but you'd think they'd toss you some freebies in the beginning at least - sort of like Brawl does!

I seem to remember unlocking things pretty steadily in MKDD - even in the first few cups. I mean, even if it is just a stupid kart that just looks different from the others but provides no benefit it is nice to unlock stuff.

There is a ton of freebies, don't get me wrong... when you finish the unlockable cups and the cc's, it gives you stuff.

But for the people who want to get real good at the game, Nintendo has given those people some stuff too.

I like the fact they have finally struck a balance, because most Nintendo games are piss easy to complete.

I think the point is that they are trying to come up with a balance in this game for both the younger generations with stuff already unlocked, and for us older generations where it's good to have good challenges that are not just kid like. It's very good of Nintendo to do this. Brawl seems like the kids can own that game and the unlockables are too easy to obtain. I like the balance they did here in Maro Kart for Wii. The new tracks are very very awesome, got to play a few online and I really loved that roller coaster one, what a wild ride. The ice one is soo hard.

Hmmm... Well, I don't agree. I think Brawl had fantastic balance with the ability to unlock the characters and stages fairly easily (though a few were challenging enough IMO). yet to unlock every last "challenge" trophy is damn near impossible. So there's plenty of challenge for the hardcore there, but it is in an area that only completionists care about so it doesn't get in the way of enjoying the game. If the karts and, particularly, the characters, are near impossible to unlock in Mario Kart I'll be pretty disappointed.

Of couse I have yet to really play it much so I'll have to see just how challenging this stuff is ;).

There are karts and characters that are easy to unlock... then there are some that take skill to unlock. None of them are impossible, you just have to be good at the game, which takes practice.

I don't think having unlockables being tied into skill is a bad thing... it forces you to get better and learn the tracks better.

I tell you what, you get good enough to start unlocking the time trial unlockables, and you'll see it reflect back into your regular game as well.

A couple comments about single player

+ Wii wheel, like most motion controlled games, it sucked until after an hour everything clicked.
+ item balance seems ok so far (only part way through 100cc), but i know that will change soon enough

- No challenges?
- Blue shell still exists
- Tracks are a little too wide
- No custom controls, I want to use items with the B button dammit!

So far... solid game. A few confusing design decisions that I'm sure we've all heard before, but overall the game is solid.

I don't think the tracks are too wide at all.. they are perfect for getting drift boosts with, imo.

The blue shell sucks, but so does that stupid POW block too. I don't like either =/

No challenges is ok, try unlocking some Fast Course time trials, plenty of challenge ;)

This. One hundred percent this. You cannot control what items are used against you, and as such, time trial is the best way to practice your runs. I've already noticed improvement in the tracks I've done on Time Trial when I play them online- I pull ahead of the pack after about 1.5 laps and don't see another person the rest of the race.

The unlockables in this game are great. You have enough starting out to play the game just fine.

Alright, my friend code is:

Derek

I'll throw it in my sig as well.

I'm adding Roufuss, lilboo, and Walrus.

PM me if you ad me.

Here's another question: I assume the unlockables are tied to the licence file, correct? As are the friends codes and all that? If so that's another disapppointing aspect as it means I can't unlock stuff in my game and have the kids use it in theirs (unless they use my file to play, which of course they don't want to do ;)). In MKDD I liked that I unlocked everything in the game and that was it - no mussing and fussing with save files for different pepople (and also much less chance of having the data erased by an out-of-control 5 year-old ;)). Brawl is the same way - one overall game save with progress/unlockables yet you can select different profiles for playing.

As soon as I can wrest control of the Wii from my kids I'm hopping online - wanna see how this thing plays!

Online is pretty good. Sometimes items like red shells lag a little hitting people but that's the only thing I've noticed.

And yes, unlockables are tied to license.

I'll add those who have PM'd & said they added me here.. later since the game is being used right now.
So far I got like 2 new carts, King Boo, Diddy and Rosalina.

Still can't believe Dixie isn't here :bomb:
So, how do you actually get stars? My highest ranking is a B, What exactly qualifies in getting you a higher rank? I actually completed all 4 tracks in first and still ended up with a C rank? I don't get this :(

I think it has to do with your time and by how much you beat your opponents.

Not positive, though. I got one A on the first series and I think Bs on the rest.

But that's the thing! I remember 2 of those races I was at least 6-7 seconds ahead of the second place guy!
Do you use a lot of items? Maybe the more items you use = lowers rank?
But that's the thing! I remember 2 of those races I was at least 6-7 seconds ahead of the second place guy!

I think it's placement and time. I use items all the time, and I got double stars on all the 50 cc Banana Cup tracks.

But each race was a close one between me and the second place guy due to stupid items, so I have no idea.

I also drift and do a lot of tricks too, so maybe that's it? Who knows how it's factored in. Are you playing on manual or auto transmission? The first time I ever played, I did no drifting at all and it was on auto, and I only got an A. Did all the drifting myself, now I'm getting stars.

Yes! I do as many tricks as I can get. I checked my record and I'm already close to 400 tricks,
I manually drift and I do that on usually every turn.

I've played it about 3 hours now. Definitely a fun game.

A few nit picks though -

- Can't stand using the Wiimote, so I'm using the WaveBird exclusively now.
- Really disappointed that they dropped the two player Grand Prix.
- Online is fun, but desperately lacks chat.
- The AI cheats like a mother farker when you get a big lead to knock you down.

What I hate is that races are decided by some guy in last place with a blue shell, espicially in a close race.

It shouldn't be like that.

Roufuss, whats your FC? I went back a few pages and couldn't find it (if you posted it, LOL)
My shit is in my 2878-9974-8542

Do I have to add you to, or do you just add me? Cause I'm playing Grand Prix right now, haha.

See, I just had a close GP, barely won each race, and I still got double stars... so I have no clue how it calculates it. I just run the races the best I can.

Maybe it's something about how good a race you run, like how often you go off the track, fall off the track, things like that?

What's the best way to unlock characters? So far, I've only gotten King Boo from winning the Star Cup; I figure I'll get more when I play through the other cups I haven't had a chance to finish yet, but am I going to have to play time trials to get all of them? :whistle2:k

I just picked it up and so far am loving it. Its much better than I expected, and the wii wheel works great. I'm going to have to get some FCs going. The online has worked great for me so far with 0 dropped games.

Time Trials get you two of them (don't have to win, just do the trial). Unlocking expert time trials gets you two more.

Beating CC's and cups gets you some more.

Getting stars on all the cups gets you the rest.

You can add me whenever. I'll add you now, though.
I'll replay some 50CC cups later. I'll try and just race really well..? I thought coming in first = raced really well, but whatever I guess. :whistle2:k

Okay, I just picked up the game. I've played only a few races, but it's a blast. I've added a lot of you, and PM'd you to notify.

My FC is 0387-9185-6240 (Joe). Let me know via PM if you add me!

I agree, that just happened to me in an online race. The blue shell is a really shitty item. :/

Up to like 6,350 points. It goes slower the higher you go. :x
I must be retarded. How do I jump when using the Wavebird? The manual says R but It does not work.
Somebody said the D-Pad.
To add someone, do you need to add their console FC first then the MK FC? Or can you just add the friend code from MK?
Just the MK FC is fine, I believe. If you happen to have their console FC registered you can send them a nice little invite that is pretty much useless.

My friend code is 0344-9687-4928 (Jason). PM me if you add me. Speaking of which, should another thread be create just to hold Mario Kart codes? It would be easier than shifting through this thread of discussion.

I actually really miss the "special" items for each character in Double Dash, I kind of wish those had made a return...

I hate games that make you sit through the credits. Of course the damn things are 5 minutes long, too. I like when games stick the credits in the options, because nobody I know cares that Keizo Kato was in charge of Progress Management.

Just got stars in everything in Retro 50 cc now -

The Cheep Charger, a small kart! Looks awesome!
So, how will the MK tournaments via the MK Channel work..?
Good question. I'm looking forward to the first one.

Also, dayum Roufuss. You're tearing the Grand Prixs up!

I've logged 9 hours since 12:30 am last night :(

I've only really been doing the 50 cc's and time trial's... I'm gonna take a break for a few hours, haha.

I got gold in the 50cc Wii cups, but they're mostly Bs. I don't know how I'll get stars. :/

I've spent most of my time online.
