Mario Kart Wii - Gen. Discussion & Info
[On the] 5 or 6 games I played, no one really ever came close. Doubt I'll be playing this online much now, it just seems most people aren't too good at it, to the point of being absolutely horrible.
If you play some more games, your ranking will continue to go up and then you will be matched with other good players so you can have challenging games. If you can put up with the riffraff a little longer then you'll have more fun online.

I have been lapped on rainbow road. I am getting wrecked online (and offline too, there is no way I will unlock everything) but as my ranking plummets, I'll be matched with other terrible people, and maybe I won't get lapped anymore.

On another note, I wish there was a local and/or online co-op mode that would unlock stuff for as many licenses as there were players. Co-op campaigns are so much fun. I'd rank that as important as voice-chat.
isnt that the only way to get online with a friend? they can choose their own mii but they still are signed in as guest. unless you can sign in using 2 licenses at the same time, which i havent heard of this before.
right so if the other person wanted to use their license during online play, they wouldn't have the unlocks that you unlocked available to use, right?

Has this been confirmed? From what I could tell, it was random the same way Tetris DS was, but your score just didn't go up or down as much depending on who you played. So you could be terrible (like me) and lose to someone with a 7000+ rating and not really lose any points, but if I beat them my score would go up dramatically.
all the karts and characters that ive unlocked are available to both of us when me and my gf play online. and everything has been unlocked using my license
Right, but your GF is playing as a "guest" and she has no online ranking. My wife wants to play with her license file every so often so that she can increase her ranking. The problem is that everything is unlocked on my license file - tracks, carts, characters, etc. So if she wants to go online as herself, not a guest, she is going to have to unlock everything under her license as well.

I can't confirm anything, but from my experience it seems to be true to an extent - it seems like I've been playing people with higher scores than I was when I first started playing online.

That said, I think it's also dependent on what games are open when you sign on.

So far, the highest score I've seen in versus races has been ~8600; he had the fabled star next to his name, and was scary good.

my roommate is in a race with someone with 9200 rating at the moment :) He has two stars next to his name

Remind me, please. How does one acquire stars next to his or her name?

EDIT: Nevermind, I FAQ'd it. Apparently, all you have to do is get Stars on all the GPs. That doesn't sound too strenuous.

Got both GTA IV and Mario Kart Wii (back) on Sat and I ended up playing far more Mario Kart. Had the whole family join in trying to unlock all the characters, cars, tracks, ect. Loads of fun. I put in a full day with it on Sat and Sun. I have just three characters not counting Mii outfit B. Dry Bowser, Baby Daisy, and Bowser Jr along with a few cars, bikes and mirror mode left.

I see ppl online already with a gold star or two by their name. wow

Wait until you try it.

Getting stars is a pain in the ass when the computer "luckily" uses a lightning bolt on you, mid jump, so you fall into a pit / lava, then the CPU passes you by because of the rubberband effect, you end up 6th for the race, even though you're #1 in the standings by a shit ton, and then the game gives you an A.

Happened to me twice... it is hair pullingly stressful.

But I'm glad I 100%'ed it, so now I can move on fully to GTA 4.

What bothers me the most is that the AI in this game is so horrible... even at 150 cc, they suck so bad at simply racing, so to compensate, they made the AI "rubberband" (i.e no matter how far up you get, the AI is always somehow right on your ass) and abuse items like a son of a bitch.

Ever notice how it's real real easy to get to the front of the pack, but when you're there, suddenly the AI becomes super awesome with items, and you'll get hit with a billion things at once?

I've had a red shell track me from across the map on Grumble Volcano, which I don't really believe is possible on a normal game. I hope for the next game Nintendo focuses on the AI and makes them decent racers, and not just item happy.

I can relate. I've got stars on everything except the last couple Mirror Cups. In getting this far, there have definitely been times when I've been cheated due to item abuse chains (ie second place hits me w/ a shell, then so does fourth place, sixth place, etc.). What I meant was that, usually a retry or two renders me that gold star. Not infuriating, but definitely time-consuming.

Red shells are much more persistent this time around, that's for sure. I've been on the trigger of some amazing red shells that I thought had zero chance of tracking. One made it through the big S curve before the bridge on GCN DKM! I'm okay with crazy smart red shells as they're closer to the spirit of SMK that's carried on through the series.

As far as rubberbanding goes, I don't have a problem with it per se. My problem is when it uses big items to take you down all at once instead of giving out lots of shells to CPU karters to keep you in check throughout the race. It fits in with the larger overall theme, I think, of making big items more frequent and in so doing making the "classic" items less valuable.

I'm 2 two-star cups in mirror mode away from having an overall two-star rank. I don't think I'll ever two-star the mirror class special cup. The problem isn't that that the tracks are mirrored. It's just those little CPU fuckers keep the heat up with all the POWs/lightning that it's nearly impossible to avoid falling off on BC/RR or getting run over on MVH.

I wish they'd do the cup performance summary like in MKDD, where you just see your overall time. The CPU could then use that overall time as a basis for star rankings. That way it'd be easier to gauge when to keep going in the cup and when to restart. Making the star rankings vague is a cheap way to add replay value.

OK, we got it. You guys are awesome at this game. As if I didn't feel inadequate enough at it already... We need to make a branching thread for the crap players like me and another for the really good ones like dothog and Roufuss. Except I suspect all that would do is illustrate how bad I am when I'm the only one in the crap thread. I really love this game though, and I am getting better I guess. I don't know how closely the two franchises can be tied, but I hope the next Excite Truck (assuming there is one) follows the MK Wii mold. I think that would be my perfect Wii Wheel game.

Well, surely no one here is intending to make others feel inadequate. They're simply using the Mario Kart General Discussion Thread to discuss. That said, I totally agree with you on the Excite Truck sequel having a lot of potential. But that's another discussion for another thread. ;)

I just hate the concept of rubberbanding, simply because it's a cop out for smart AI... the AI can be dumb as shit, but when they go twice as fast when they are behind so one mistake means they boost in front of you... well that's some bullshit. I hate it in all racing games... Burnout was a huge offender as well.

What I also thought was silly was how the points distribute... the same person who got second in a race (CPU wise) would get 11th in the next one... usually it would end up I would have 42 - 45 points by the third race, and everyone else had like 30 and under... so I could come in almost dead last in the last race and STILL win the cup.

I have no clue how the stars are handed out, I have anywhere from 1 to 3 stars on the tracks... I'm not going for over 1 star, because I have no clue how the system works, and I do agree with you about the vague replay. Once, I raced the cup perfectly, and got an A... redid it, fell off twice on BC, and ended up with two stars??

You were right on an older post on Motorcycles being the best... wheelies + drifting makes motorcycles supreme. Good to see the best vehicle in a kart game is a motorcycle. The big item stuff sucks too... once, I got hit with a lightning bolt, red shell, red shell, then ANOTHER lightning bolt.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the game, loved most of the tracks, but I thought that some of the AI decisions that went into this game were insane. It felt like I was working more towards a star ranking than winning the race, because it was just so easy to win a race due to the CPU's ranking being so varied.

fuck, you nailed it with BC... they never really get me on RR, but I had to do redo BC so many times on 150 cc simply because I kept getting hit with lightning over a jump and falling straight down. That's not even fair, that's just cheap.

The item's seems to be better balanced online, but online just isn't that fun when the majority of folks online pick the SAME EXACT TRACKS (no more coconut mall, please!) or just simply all that good (i.e falling off the track constantly). Look, I'm not trying to brag about being good at the game, because I know there are a ton of people better than me, but even when the game matches me up with someone with a 7000 VR, they still aren't that good.

Dude, you gotta know that in any mario kart game, the single player sucks ass. the only use you need single player for is to unlock all the goodies. mario kart is best played with other friends IRL. the second best way to play is online. Yea the AI sucks and rubberbands, but you should have know that before you bought the game, its been that way since the first mario kart.
Hey man, give those grandpas and soccer moms a break... they can't help that they're not gamers.
lol ;)

I just assumed the system matched people up with similar skill, but it doesn't seem to work for me?

I think I'm just too used to the 360, which seems to do just that.

It's just aggravating going into an online match, and the other 11 racers all have a VR of under 5000, so I know it's going to be a train wreck. Then they all pick Coconut Mall!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And to the post above me, MK DS had decent enough AI from what I recall, as did MK 64. And this time, in single player, unlocking all the goodies takes a fucking a long time because of the vague star system. I put at least 15 hours into the single player, which is good enough for me, it was fun definitely, just I had some leftover nagging thoughts.

I've noticed that both of my three stars so far have been on cups where, on one or more of the races, I absolutely dominated. Meaning, I won by 20+ seconds. So, I think this, more than anything, is the determining factor of your rating.
OK, we got it. You guys are awesome at this game. As if I didn't feel inadequate enough at it already....
Sorry, just looking for discussion. Not making fun of anyone or their abilities. For most people, MKW is "just" another Nintendo title, but for me it's a big deal. The Mario Karts have been my most-played titles on every Nintendo console I've owned since the SNES. I've been playing MKDD consistently since its release--that's nearly 5 years of MKDD.

Even though I loves me some karting, relatively speaking I'm not that good. Go to some of the Mario Kart Players' Pages (google it) to get a feel for what a real Mario Kart fanatic can do. It's crazy. I'm somewhere between an experienced gamer and an MK fanatic, so my posts here are as out of place as my posts on the MK fanatic boards.
And to the post above me, MK DS had decent enough AI from what I recall, as did MK 64.
I dunno. I recall MKDS being awfully liberal with the blue shells, but I'll admit to knowing less about the handheld MKs than I do the console MKs.

Everybody's got stories, but suffice it to say that you could use every trick and shortcut on a given track and the CPU in MK64 would find a way to make up a 30-second lead in the last quarter of a given track. However, MK64 had blue shells that were both 1) less frequent and 2) capable of spinning other karters on their way to the guy in first. These features of the blue shell balance out the ridiculous rubberbanding in MK64.

In spite of its faults, I'll be playing MKW steadily until the next console iteration appears. As AI goes, I don't think it's any more offensive than the other MKs--I just think the all-around emphasis on big items is effed up and on par with gutting the series of its soul (shells/shrooms). However, the Manual steering option may hold some depth that, while not as active or fun as the old system with mini-turbos, could still take some time to uncover.

To follow up on the bikes thing, roufuss, it really is a bummer that they made bikes more than a novelty in a karting game. Outside of my first cups and a few brief experiments, I've been on bikes the whole damn time. I don't understand why this is so.
I just assumed the system matched people up with similar skill, but it doesn't seem to work for me?
Yes, the matchmaking feature is supposed to put you up against people of similar skill. The instructions lay it out as: "You can choose to play against others who have the same approximate rating as you."

Are you playing regional or global wifi games? I ask because I read something somewhere that seemed to imply global games don't match like regional games. There may also be an issue with sooooo many people having a ~5000 rank, the rarer higher echelon (i.e., you) becomes harder to properly match.

And mephitical, I would be in the shit-ass-mario-kart-players ONLY thread right along with you. We could go over the nuances of Bullet Bill game play, and compare notes on who has more games where they were the reason for the race to end based on the 30 second finish rule.

Most embarrassing for me so far is having been automatically booted from a game where I kept going backwards by mistake off some ramps. It is the level where there are some giant Piranha Plants (Waluigi Stadium?) in horizontal pipes. I kept getting twisted around on those damn ramps and kept going backwards.

Some good came out of this - I read a tip that if you are going backwards, press accelerate and brake at the same time and you should be able to quickly turn around. I'm off to try it before getting booted again.

Yes! I have NO idea how the ranking system works at ALL.
There have been times where I'm going for at least a single star, and I end up fallin off the track (as in water/lava) and I'm like "fuck, here comes a nice B" and I ended up with 2 stars.
Then, I would think I'm doing well and end up with an A??

yeah count me in as confused on the ranking also. I finished shell cup again the other day after screwing up the first time and finishing silver. Got gold and finished first in every race no major hickups on the tracks and I got rank A *shrug*. I thought it was because maybe I hit something or fell off the track or something but now I'm not sure.

This is just something that I noticed, my rank seemed like it based off of how much better I did time wise than the other computers. If you finish every race with a 5 or 6 second advantage, then your rating would be better. I don't know if its true, just based off of my speculation.

You may be right I have no idea at this point I know I got one star on the mushroom cup but Other than that its Rank A or lower. So it could very well just be a time thing.

Rank is completely time-related, not standing related. It was the same in DS.

An amazing race early on can help a botched one later.

Has anyone tried the tournament that's available yet? I started playing late last night and ended up not even finishing the first lap because one of my kids got really sick. It said you could make unlimited attempts, so maybe I'll try again tonight.

Yeah, I tried it. The event is that you run one 12P grand prix (with 11 CPU karters) race, not a cup, as many times as you like and submit your best time. The track is MKW Mario Circuit.

I like the idea of a tournament. Not sure about how they've arranged this particular event.

I knew going in that there would be a lot of time wasted if I wanted a competitive time, so I limited myself to five runs and left it at that. I got one relatively unharassed run (no blue shells, only one lightning), and I clocked just under 1m45s. I was proud of it at the time until I looked up the Top 10: it was nowhere near the Top 10, which IIRC were sub 1m40s but maybe they were even faster. In terms of time trialing, that's not blazing fast--I think I've run something around 1m30s on MC. But with the other racers and the chain chomps screwing up the fast lines, I doubt very much that even with a full day of restarts I could compete with sub 1m40s.

Anyhow, it's cool how Nintendo can arrange twists on conventional races with features such as the chomps running loose. Would be cooler if they can implement these twists into a 4-race tournament cup that matches 12 online players with similar VR scores. Who knows.

EDIT: A bitch-n-moan I just realized is that this tournament mode reveals some functionality Nintendo excludes from the out-of-the-box game. It would be nice to have the Versus mode be customizable in a number of ways, one of which includes the ability to turn on/off different 'crazy' in-race obstacles like chain chomps on the loose, lakitu dropping spinies all over the track, weather features that slick up or slow down parts of the track intermittently, etc.

There's always been room for Versus to improve, and until MKW it's been the same damn thing since MK64. It'd be neat if next time around Nintendo opened VS. even more to include the kind of things we see in this Tournament feature.

1:55.8 for me. I've tried again after that effort but keep getting blue shelled or lightning(ed). I probably even got POW'ed or something for that time without knowing that a wheelie will help negate the slow down of the POW block.

I might try it again today, but I really don't think I can compete with some of the people that got ridiculous times.

Yeah, if someone around here cracks 1m40s, please PM as soon as convenient, as I would like to subscribe to your Mario Kart correspondence course.

You know you could meet up with them in that same regional/worldwide rooms, right? Just go to the friends list and click meet up. If you can't get in, the room is probably full.

Me and my friends do it all the time.

So, I found this odd.

Today, I got at least one star on every track, after getting a two-star (go figure) on the Mirror Star Cup (As an aside, I plan to avoid Mirror Mode for quite some time now). After doing so, it popped up with this message: You unlocked Rosalina! Now, I was under the impression that unlocking Rosalina required save data from Super Mario Galaxy, which I've never had on my Wii. In fact, I was going to go rent it today, partially to fulfill her unlock prerequisite. Has anyone else had to or heard of someone having to unlock her this way?

Well, I guess I shouldn't complain - now I've unlocked everything!

(Oh, and just to brag: I played the Mirror Special Cup today and won on Rainbow Road by about thirty seconds, netting me my third three-star :D EDIT: Oops, joke's on me. In my results-screen, button-mashing haste, I misread my rating. Only two stars for the Mirror Special Cup.)

its not the same though. when you start a room yourself you play a 4 game match and whoever has the most points accum from the 4 races wins.

I'm not positive, but I think you can unlock Rosalina by
getting at least one star on all of the new courses in Mirror Mode
, in addition to the Galaxy save file method.

That's a good thing, too - I haven't picked up Galaxy yet because Brawl and Mario Kart have been keeping me busy. :)

Yeah, I know it's Grand Prix style in your own room. I just like when my friends meet me in regional/worldwide rooms, cause we can get points together.

I can't break the 2 minute mark and I'm right on the cusp - I get red-shelled to death on this course. I really like the roaming Chomps. Yeah, it might have been nice for Nintendo to allow complete customization of courses, but sometimes that takes tha magic of gaming away for me. I kind of like that it's presented to me one way (retail game) but then on special occassions (tournament) things change a little. If that wasn't the case, I would probably have no interest in the tournaments.

I'm at 1:58-something...first time using the bike, once I got the hang of it, the times went down. I don't think I can get much lower, though..."how do they do it?"

@Mephitical:

You're not the only one feeling sub-average at this game. I'm considerably below 5000, just after a few hours of online play this weekend. I'm terrible at this game, utterly terrible. Granted I'm using the wheel and the learning curve has been a bit steep.

I've gotten gold on all the 50cc courses, but they're beyond easy. The 100cc courses aren't too bad either (with the exception of a few of the later tracks) and I've heard that 150cc should be nicknamed 'blue shell highway.' I, too have been blasted from 1st place to 12th in a matter of seconds thanks to an onslaught of special items right at the end.

I prefer the 'safe' confines of the solo time trial modes, racing against my own ghost. Ahh.. nice and safe. That's the ticket. Yeah, my ghost isn't too intimidating. :) I just figured out tricks and wheelies and that has somewhat improved my standing, but I'm just not a natural, especially with all the 8000+ aces zigzagging all over the track online.

On a side note, I expected the menus to be more illustrated and colorful, but they're really bland. I think this was probably Nintendo's strategy, to market to the casual gaming crowd by giving the game's aesthetic a clean, generic look to match the home channels page.

Okay, I think I played against lilboo this afternoon. After quitting a game with what I thought were a bunch of random regional people, I discovered a friend was online - Tommy! So, I joined his regional race, only to discover he was racing the exact same people I was two minutes ago. So, er, good races lilboo! I only regret that I had no idea who you were until I had left. I wish the game would notify you when your friends were in your race (with the smiley face icon, or something).

I stink with the Wii Wheel.
However, I think it's just me. It's surprisingly responsive.
When I did get it right, though, I had TONS of fun. Almost makes me wish I had a friend to play with.
Although, about 30 minutes earlier, me and some friends were over playing Brawl.
Looking forward to playing some multiplayer with some CAGS, as soon as I get decent at it.

When I was playing online It started me off at 50cc and I went to 150CC after beating people by a good 10+ seconds with Funky Kong, once I hit 150CC i found myself getting in third place or less, and after hitting fourth twice it bumped me down to 100CC. The ranking system seems to work when your doing well, but I'm not sure if it stays the same when you log out.

I have no idea how to work online apparently., I'm watching liboo race now, but I've been doing that for a loooong time. I keep getting an "unable to meet up" message.

*edit* OK, I feel better now. I have now raced and lost to liboo. It was every bit as delicious as I dreamed it would be.

Here is a typical online session for me. I'm having so much lag-free fun even though I get worked in every game.

rgd2blck, that is hilarious! It captures Mario Kart Wii perfectly! I approve so much.

EDIT: So, it's official. I've played someone online with a VR rating of over 9000. He was (this is of no surprise) a motorcycle user, and was quite consistent - never dipping below fourth place. AND, he had a star next to his name. So, all in all, quite intimidating. I also found out that, with a rating that high, you lose points if you get second. Not a lot, but you still lose points.

But, I'm proud to say I did take him on several courses. Bowser's Castle, Grumble Volcano, GCN DK Mountain. Anything with lots of turns gave me an advantage, given I'm a kart racer.

I've been unlocking courses and stuff and really enjoying the game. I'm looking to play some of my friends online sometime, but some of them haven't added me yet it appears.
