Red shells are much more persistent this time around, that's for sure. I've been on the trigger of some amazing red shells that I thought had zero chance of tracking. One made it through the big S curve before the bridge on GCN DKM! I'm okay with crazy smart red shells as they're closer to the spirit of SMK that's carried on through the series.
As far as rubberbanding goes, I don't have a problem with it per se. My problem is when it uses big items to take you down all at once instead of giving out lots of shells to CPU karters to keep you in check throughout the race. It fits in with the larger overall theme, I think, of making big items more frequent and in so doing making the "classic" items less valuable.
I'm 2 two-star cups in mirror mode away from having an overall two-star rank. I don't think I'll ever two-star the mirror class special cup. The problem isn't that that the tracks are mirrored. It's just those little CPU

ers keep the heat up with all the POWs/lightning that it's nearly impossible to avoid falling off on BC/RR or getting run over on MVH.
I wish they'd do the cup performance summary like in MKDD, where you just see your overall time. The CPU could then use that overall time as a basis for star rankings. That way it'd be easier to gauge when to keep going in the cup and when to restart. Making the star rankings vague is a cheap way to add replay value.
I just hate the concept of rubberbanding, simply because it's a cop out for smart AI... the AI can be dumb as shit, but when they go twice as fast when they are behind so one mistake means they boost in front of you... well that's some bullshit. I hate it in all racing games... Burnout was a huge offender as well.
What I also thought was silly was how the points distribute... the same person who got second in a race (CPU wise) would get 11th in the next one... usually it would end up I would have 42 - 45 points by the third race, and everyone else had like 30 and under... so I could come in almost dead last in the last race and STILL win the cup.
I have no clue how the stars are handed out, I have anywhere from 1 to 3 stars on the tracks... I'm not going for over 1 star, because I have no clue how the system works, and I do agree with you about the vague replay. Once, I raced the cup perfectly, and got an A... redid it, fell off twice on BC, and ended up with two stars??
You were right on an older post on Motorcycles being the best... wheelies + drifting makes motorcycles supreme. Good to see the best vehicle in a kart game is a motorcycle. The big item stuff sucks too... once, I got hit with a lightning bolt, red shell, red shell, then ANOTHER lightning bolt.
Don't get me wrong, I loved the game, loved most of the tracks, but I thought that some of the AI decisions that went into this game were insane. It felt like I was working more towards a star ranking than winning the race, because it was just so easy to win a race due to the CPU's ranking being so varied.

, you nailed it with BC... they never really get me on RR, but I had to do redo BC so many times on 150 cc simply because I kept getting hit with lightning over a jump and falling straight down. That's not even fair, that's just cheap.
The item's seems to be better balanced online, but online just isn't that fun when the majority of folks online pick the SAME EXACT TRACKS (no more coconut mall, please!) or just simply all that good (i.e falling off the track constantly). Look, I'm not trying to brag about being good at the game, because I know there are a ton of people better than me, but even when the game matches me up with someone with a 7000 VR, they still aren't that good.
