Mario Kart Wii - Gen. Discussion & Info
How can you tell if you unlocked an expert staff ghost in Time Trials?
right after you do it, it tells you on the bottom left hand side of the screen. but i had done some ghost battles online so i wasn't sure what i had unlocked and what i hadn't. so i gave in and just looked it up on a cheat site.

You know what i noticed that really pissed me off about this game? I was doing a WW vs. race and I was in second place out of 12. I was right behind 1st and looking to hit him with a red shell to win. all of a sudden i get disconnected from the other players and got booted off the race. I go back to online and i noticed I lost about 200 vr points. what the fuck is that?

I'm guessing it's to punish people who try to intentionally disconnect when they're about to lose a race. Unfortunately, it sounds like you were just screwed over by it.

I figured that, but they should at least award you with whatever position you were in before the disconnect. 200 points for a disconnect was like finishing last for me, which was BS.

Finally got around to playing, bought it at launch but haven't had time since classes were ending and so forth.

Played multiplayer with the girlfriend online, pretty awesome.

Will post my friend code in a bit.

Some impressions:

Character models are horrid. Reminds me of Mario Party and how it looks like they are the same ones from the N64 era. Come on, Nintendo.

Adding a Friend Code with the messages is both good and bad. It's good because it makes me think Nintendo realizes how asinine Friend Codes are, and are slowly inching their way toward resolving such issues by allowing me to add the codes instantly. It's bad because I have to do each one individually AND because it effectively locks out anyone who isn't on my system list. So it's a two steps forward, one step back situation. Here's hoping with the Wii2 or whatever that they realize they are so close to resolving one of the major complaints with their online implementation.

Which leads me to another online complaint - lack of options. Dumb.

The voices during races are annoying. Too much of them.

Character roster is weak as hell. Throw these baby characters into the garbage where they belong, and take the roster from Smash Bros. Then give them all personalized carts that reflect their gaming universes. See, Nintendo, that is what we call moving a series forward with progression.

As for the actual gameplay, it's about what I expect (I was never a huge MK fan). The wheel is surprisingly solid in my hands, but it's not near accurate enough for me to want to always use it. I haven't tried the GC controller yet, but I imagine I will very soon.

Will post more impressions later after I get into it more. Will also get FC up ins.

Don't use the GC controller. You need to press the D-pad for tricks/wheelies and if you want to win harder races/time trials you need all of the wheelies you can get. Constantly pressing the D-pad is not practical. I use the remote and nunchuck and I think it's the best. It does use waggle but not enough to hurt your arm. Also you're right about everything you said. Why the fuck do we have baby mario, peach,
luigi, and daisy

If I may offer another opinion, I love the GC controller. I don't find it any problem at all performing tricks and wheelies with the D-pad. I too don't get the accuracy and control when I use the wheel (I can't even finish a lap half the time)

umm combatcraig he isn't using the wheel either he's using the nunchuk and wiimote combo and it is really really easy to play the game with precision that way.

This is true. When I unlocked Diddy..he really looked like an N64 model. I'm glad someone (especially you) pointed that out.

The voices during races are annoying. Too much of them.

Baby Daisy disagrees with you :nottalking:

I somewhat agree. I think the only reason they added the babies was so they could have more light weights. Once you unlock everyone, there's 8 people per weight class. IMO, I think that's pretty good rather then having 2-4 people per weight group.

My only complaints in terms of characters are Funky & Dry Bowser. I understand AGAIN they needed more heavyweights (..which BTW, Rosalina is a heavyweight in this game)..but really. They could have added someone ELSE instead of Funky..or even Dry Bowser. Sillyness is what that is.

I would have been thrilled to have Dixie in! :(

The wheel is great when you are playing online and you see that everyone else is using the wheel. It looks like the wheel is a pretty big thing--regional & worldwide. It's also fun when you have an extra wheel and are playing with someone else.
But it's not good for 100cc and up.
The nunchuk is a great choice..have you tried that yet? That works really well, it's fun, AND it feels more new (like the wheel.) Some people disagree with that, but I think the wheel and nunchuk options are the best options because it makes it feel like a Wii game.

The GC controller (NOT the wavebird) is pretty good. For some reason, I didn't like the wavebird :whistle2:/

Wired > Wavebird
Doing the tricks is not all that bad. You just gotta remember to press a button. I got used to it pretty quickly. I just gotta remember that it's a BUTTON..and not to move my controller up..
Plus again.. the babies are there so they could have more lightweights. That's all.

You just have to practice with the wheel. I've held my own pretty well online using the wheel against other wheel users and not.

I like how they show you who IS using a wheel..but if your not, they don't show you. I wish I knew who was using the nunchuk, a classic, and a gamecube controller. :(
I figured that, but they should at least award you with whatever position you were in before the disconnect.
So everyone can disconnect as soon as they get in first? Great idea.

Regarding Baby Mario and such. I know my kids would like that (we don't, sadly, have a Wii - I'm living vicariously....) So, for that crowd, Baby Mario and friends make perfect sense. As for me, I'd like them too, perhaps just because my kids would like them. Or maybe I'd like them regardless. Anyway... Mario Kart, unlike Super Smash Bros, is a pure (young)kid-friendly game, so having kid-friendly characters is a good thing IMHO. I have a question - in an online game can you set it so that only people using wheels are allowed into the race? Such that the race would be a test of wheel-prowess.
But it's not good for 100cc and up.
I don't know about that. I'm working my way through one-starring the cups (in the middle of 150cc) using a wheel, and have had no problems online with the wheel.

On the other hand, I would say traditional control is easier, no doubt, than using the wheel for the simple fact that you can be lazier when driving. Using the wheel I have to be always conscious of how I hold the wheel and how I pull back to perform tricks and wheelies. When using the nunchuk I can just set my arms at my sides and carefully adjust with the analog stick when needed.

Of all traditional control, I would say the nunchuk is best. Freehand control is more comfortable to me. Tricks and wheelies mapped to movement is much easier to pull off. And most of all, I don't have to deal with those GC shoulder buttons.

In the end, I think the wheel is more immersive and demands more skill.
umm combatcraig he isn't using the wheel either he's using the nunchuk and wiimote combo and it is really really easy to play the game with precision that way.
ummm ok my bad I misread it...sorry.

Anyways

I feel akward using the Wiimote + nunchuck sometimes because they are in each hand. I know I know you hold a GC controller in both hands, but they are connected into one unit. Maybe I'm just not coordinated enough (wait I know I'm not lol).

I can sort of see that. I just don't understand why more people don't give the new control methods more of a chance. Seems like every game everyone immediatly plugs in the GC controller and starts using that what would you all have done if they "hadn't" allowd it to be used on the system?

Ugh. I've always hated the feel and layout of the Gamecube controllers. I'm almost done with 100cc and have only used the wheel, and I am getting to the point where I can hold my own online with it. Plus, it's just more fun with the wheel.
Really Craig?
Have you played Galaxy or Strikers? It seems odd, but they both play very well, IMO
Yeah I played both. I got used to it in Galaxy and Strikers. But I guess what PhoenixT said is true. I just tried Wii Wheel hated it and jumped right to my safety net of Wavebird.

I normally try out a good chunk of the control schemes each time I get a new game. On Brawl I found the GC controller the most comfortable but usually its the wiimote/nunchuk. I just happend to find two I liked on Mario Kart early, wheel for fun and wiimote/nunchuk for more precision. Haven't messed with the classsic controler or gamecube yet though I suppose I should.

i wouldnt even bother with the classic or gamecube. performing tricks on the nunchuk is better and you can do wheelies on it as well which is missing from the GC/CC.
Ok, my favorite new item in this game is the HIV cloud.
HAHAHA, oh man, hahaha. I hate that thing and I have actually hit the brakes to let people run into me just so I can get rid of it. Only time I have used the brakes.

What I really love about this game is the way it scales. From using traditional controls with manual drifting to using just the wheel and the 2 button and nothing else, anyone can play, have fun, and be competitive. I've had people play who thought using items was information overload, and they could still stay in the pack for most of the race online with a 4500ish rating. Fun fun fun.

I've settled into using the wheel with a bike and auto drifting. I'm still falling off course when I stunt and getting out of wheelies is hard for me, but I think I'll get better with time.

ROFL, I do the same thing.

Not a fan of the models, but it's still a solid title. One thing I don't like is the advertising for the game, is Nintendo saying we're a bunch of hicks if we buy this game or what? Those commercials are really annoying and don't do the game justice. It's a shame really.

Press UP on the D-pad.

I agree, I liked the "We would like to play" commercials more. But I think the whole point of the Cowboy Jed commercials is to make it part of a viral ad campaign -- Nintendo's already released a whole bunch of clips to the public domain for people to remix as they see fit...
Looking at the old snes tracks, I don't know why the skipped a lot of the awesome ones.
I seriously wonder if they randomly selected tracks from each game. Some of them are pure headscratchers. DK Mountain over Baby Park? Mario Circuit 3 over pretty much every other track?

Ah well. At least I have my N64 Sherbet Land.

YES! I was SO mad when Baby Park wasn't in the game!! I know it was a small, boring track but I thought that one was so much fun! It would have been awesome with 12 people. Especially with the amount of chaos this game brings,

I agree, baby park is my favorite track of all time, I was really disappointed when i unlocked the last batch of tracks and realized that it wasn't in the game.

I don't think there could have been any 1 track that was the ultimate crowd pleaser- which speaks volumes for the widespread appeal.
I know I loved the 64 beach level- probably because it rewarded skill over luck the most with the jumping shortcut
the ghost track snes level is a bit watered-down. Since they got rid of the ghost house, they could have tweaked the course more- added a longjump shortcut.
Babypark with 12 racers would end up like a slotmachine- tho I did like the gc course.
I was also disappointed there was no wario stadium bounce over the wall shortcut- disappointed but in no way surprised.

I haven't played this series since the 64 version, but DK Mountain is one of my favorite tracks from this game and same with Mario Circuit 3 - they're both intensely fun for drifting with the wheel. Maybe if I had played Baby Park I would be more upset about the track selection, but you just mentioned two of my favorite tracks so maybe not...

I also hate jumping and would love to have had more SNES tracks. I really see no reason why they couldn't fit more tracks on this game. I'd like to think that additional tracks are already on the disc, just waiting to be opened up by future Mario Kart Channel updates.

Fuc baby park and some of the DS stages.
The only thing the game needs is the feather and a proper battle mode.

Baby Park was one of my favorite tracks too, so I was disappointed as well. But I seriously wasn't surprised considering that it was included on Mario Kart DS.
is there a way to change your location? everytime i go on wfc i see myself on the east coast but im in california
i believe it depends on your isp
I was also disappointed there was no wario stadium bounce over the wall shortcut- disappointed but in no way surprised.
I'm confused - I know what shortcut you're talking about, but Wario Stadium isn't in the game. It should have been, but they chose Waluigi Stadium from Double Dash instead. :whistle2:s

Really, the selection of tracks seemed random at best. Did we really need three versions of the Mario themed raceways? How about the three Bowser castle tracks or the three Donkey Kong mountain-themed tracks?

I definitely would've been willing to sacrifice some of those for some more unique tracks, like the cruise ship from Double Dash or Choco Mountain or Yoshi Valley from the N64 game.

I just don't understand why they didn't choose the snes tracks with cool jumps like Bower's Castle there, or even the ghost ones with the jumps (probably because of the Wii Wheel).

I have to say, playing 100CC makes me want to throw the Wii Wheel out my window. Between the mediocre control ability with it to the ridiculous Blue shell at the last minute-syndrome, I'm about ready to go back to N64 MK.

i do agree that baby park should be in every mario kart from here on out.

but i actually like most of the retro tracks they added. i especially like going through the snes/gba ones with the bikes. those seem to have a lot of sharp turns. and i was very glad they added the one on the beach where you had to jump all the time to not get slowed down by the water.

Playing online reminds me of why I don't like online gaming - people are fucking idiots.

Stop picking the same fucking track all the time. One of the guys I was racing with kept picking Sherbert Land; we ended up there twice in a row despite the fact that he was the only one who was picking. Half an hour later, the same thing happens with Waluigi Stadium. Along the way, we play Luigi Circuit twice.

Is variety too much to ask for? :wall:

Keep at it. I fel the same way, but I am determined to get all the way through the game using only the Wii Wheel. Last night, something finally clicked at 100CC and I blew past all the CPU players in a cup by a significant margin and got my first 1st place online. The wheel works, you just have to work within its limitations.

After dominating online today I am rewarded with being kicked off about 65% of the time. At least I unlocked todette and funky kong though. Sonic would have been a better fit than funky kong, I don't like the way they did him so far. Donkey Kong is still my favorite character because donkey kong jr. is still missing in action.
