Mario Kart Wii - Gen. Discussion & Info
Bluster? Who's that?

Oh GOD, LANKY KONG. Shudder.
Bluster3.jpg

Bluster Kong.

And what's wrong with Lanky? He's better than the other new age Donkey Kong characters like Tiny, Chunky, or Kiddy. :whistle2:k
Man, I loved that DK show as a kid.

...are you guys playing MK online now?
The show was okay, but Bluster Kong was a mistake. One I'd blocked from my memory until I ended up on the show's Wikipedia article.

I think I'm done for the night. I was online for a while, but the repeat tracks drove me crazy and 1AM is probably not the best time to start a second round.

Well, there's a new tournament up...runs until 5/24.

Fastest time through 10 gates on SNES Battle Course 3.

Oh, but there's a catch...Wii Wheels only.

I went through it several times...I think I made an okay time, but rankings won't be up until tomorrow.

Have fun!

i thought it was pretty fun. i never use the wheel normally, but i enjoyed the challenge. i've got a fairly good time up, but i'm sure it will be beaten very quickly.

thats pretty cool that they make people use the wheel. you have to be pretty hardcore to be able to use a thing like that.

Im usually pretty good, but the wheel is a major handicap for me.

My copy should be getting to me in the mail any day now. (Hopefully today.)

I have a feeling this will be one of those handful of games each gen I don't sell due to good MP play.

I think I need to change something with my network or something as twice now I've tried an online match only to have it dump me out 30 seconds in and declare I'm the winner.

It's the same setup that works fine for my Halo 3 machine. :whistle2:/ Ah, but now that I'm thinking of it I put my 360's IP in DMZ or whatever.

Am I the only one wondering why Nintendo is rejecting Warioware characters?

If they're gonna bring in some DK characters, why not Warioware characters?!

Minor gripe though, I'll still religiously play as Toad and Yoshi despite new characters....

I want to play as cranky kong!
I wonder if he was ever supposed to be in donkey kong racing.
Funny that my gamecube box has a picture of that cancelled game on it.
We need a good wii donkey kong!

On a side not I can't get mariokart online to work when my mii's name is BONGWATER.

I finally got MKWii. :D Did all of 50cc and already finished Mushroom on 100cc.

I've only played using the Wii Wheel, and I like it. Are the traditional control schemes better, though?

And why is Rosalina a heavy character?

1. The wheel IS awesome. Thank you for noticing it :) Besides the wheel, I'm going to recommened the Remote + Nunchuk. That's def better..in terms of being able to control everything.

2. She's pregnant

Is there a guide somewhere that can help me configure my router so I can play MK online?

I can connect to Nintendo WFC fine. I can find opponents fine. It always dumps me in the middle of a race between some of those opps and I watch until they finish. (Is that normal?) Then the race I'm in starts but anywhere from 2-30 seconds in it says the rankings have been determined and gives me 1st place. When I click for next race it says I have been disconnected from the other racers.

This has happened 3 or 4 times now.

Change your router to channel 1 or 11 (it`s probably at 6 now)

It was set to 'auto' and said it was using ch 1, but I changed to to always use 11 and my next race went fine. Thanks!

I also remembered I had dumped down the transfer speed on the router for my DS so I upped that back to auto as well. Not sure if that was part of the solution or not.

good to hear it`s working, same thing happened to me just last week

I had something weird happen last night. I was doing regional races, and a race was about to start on Rainbow Road. The countdown began...

3
2
1
Go!
The rankings have already been determined?

The race ended immediately after it started.

I didn't mind too much - I was in first from the previous race, so I got the most points afterward, but I haven't seen that happen before.

That's what was happening to me every time.

I've had some weird things happen where I finish 1st and they say I finished second. Or I'll go from racing 11 people to racing 4. Seems like there's some weirdness in the servers. I'm on FioS, so I don't think it's my connection.

I need help. All I want to do is race as a Mii, which means I have to place in Special Cup on 100cc. My problem is that I cannot make it through Rainbow Road (or whatever it's called) without falling off way too many times. I don't have this problem in a Kart at all. I can get 1st or close on all three other races, but then tank to an "E" rating and finish last because of how poorly I do on Rainbow Road.
Any tips? A specific bike/rider combo? Just practice and stop whining?

Not major spoilers, but just in case anybody gives a shit ->
Sometimes you can get 3 firsts and get almost dead last (like 10th) and still get first overall. I've had it happen to me because of that fucking grumble volcano and those fucking blue shells. ;)

Unlock Funky Kong by unlocking four expert staff ghosts. He is the fastest rider in the game. Also has one of the most annoying voices. :bomb: Use the Flame Runner + Funky Kong. FR has nice handling and great speed considering it has decent stats in the other categories as well. You unlock expert ghosts by beating regular ghosts by a certain amount of time. Just try on cources you are good at/are easy. For example, the ghost on Luigi Circuit is a pushover and I unlocked the expert ghost on my first try. Same thing in Maple Treeway, except I think it's just because I'm good at that track.

Also, anybody up for online?

Thanks for the guide. I can barely beat Normal ghosts, so we'll see how that goes. I'm playing now, but I can't remember if we are Mario Kart friends or not...

*Edit* Gaodammit. Another almost-win on that stupid cup. Did all right on Rainbow Road, but Bowser's Castle raped me.

I tried manual mode once and it was a disaster.

So I typically use a bike and automatic mode as popping wheelies is an easy :baby: move. :D

Still I'd like to practice up on manual mode and work that out.
I gotta get back into this game still. I still has my other Mii and Dry Bowser to unlock!!!
fuckin Life as a fuckin King!
I need to unlock Toadette, Rosalina, and the second Mii.

Given that I don't intend to ever play as Toadette or Rosalina, though, I'm not too concerned. :)
Toadette isn't much work actually.
You never played Super Mario Galaxy??? :shame:
I'm not made of money, you know. :nottalking:

If I'd known about the Circuit City sale where I could've gotten Mario Kart and Galaxy together for $75, I would've waited the two or three weeks. As it stands now, Galaxy (and Super Paper Mario) are almost definitely going to be my next full price purchases, once I've got the money for them.

Besides...I've only had my Wii for two and a half months. I've got plenty of time to build up a library. :)

Played a guy on NWFC with the name of Skull.... I assume the dots are how N censors fuck ?

Just led my last race wire to wire. I am a MK god!

Nah Mephtical had a name..I think it was like Tits Face, so I don't believe they censor it.
His name jus may have been "Skull..." :whistle2:\

Galaxy sucks. It looks GREAT, but they spent all of the time they had making the levels look nice instead of making them fun to play, intriguing, and have some kind of difficulty. This is NINTENDO, the company who always stresses gameplay over graphics. :(

Of the main games (that I remember) IMO:

SMB3=SMW>SM64=SMB>SMS>SMG>NSMB>SMB2

Although I have played Yoshi's Island and SMB2 (J), I don't think I've played them long enough to give them a fair ranking. Although I will say I hated what I did play. :D

I'm on now

Anyone who's struggling, use bikes with auto drift on. That's a great way to exploit the computer for GPs and Time Trials. Just don't use it against humans, you end up like 1/2 a lap ahead of everyone online. No good. :p

Does anyone else notice that the game gets less smooth when you go 3+ player splitscreen? I thought I noticed a drop in quality, and it irks me a bit.

I like using kart+manual when I race, because the drift's pretty easy to control. Bike+manual is alright for me; i should try bike+automatic, since the bike can't get the better mini-turbo anyway.

Is there any way to negate POW blocks besides being in the air?

I've tried hopping to avoid their effects, but it hasn't actually worked for me yet. If I'm in the air from a jump off a ramp, I'm fine...but otherwise, I get nailed by those fuckers every time. :wall:
Galaxy... sucks... ? WHAT?! SMB3>SMG>Every other Mario game. :)
I'm still trying to figure out how he ranked Sunshine ahead of Galaxy, SMB2, and NSMB. Sunshine is the most frustrating title in the series by far.

That's not entirely true, Daroga. I used Diddy Kong+Mach Bike on Auto during a global vs set (although everyone was from the US, amazingly). After a struggle in the first game, I took 1st in the next 2 races by landslides. And, I came in a close second in the following race. I made up my 5K deficit and then some.

I'm not gonna' do much more online racing until I finish unlocking stuff, but at least I found something that works.

Oh, and somehow, I got the kart you get for "winning 50 WFC matches"...I don't think I've even played 50 matches, much less won them all...oh well, more for me! :bouncy:

My Wii just shut off on me in mid race. I was using the Wii Wheel and my thumb must have been pressing the power button. :dagger: Is there a setting on the Wii to disable the power button on the remotes? I like the button, but if this becomes a problem for me I'd rather disable it.
Do a trick as the third hit happens. You'll spin around, lose your item, but keep your momentum.
Yep. And what daroga means is make the trick motion. You don't actually need to be in the air and do an actual trick.

PA - I believe it gives you a 'win' for every player you finish ahead of and a 'loss' for every player you finish behind. So if you finish 2nd in a 10 man race that's 8 wins and 1 loss. At least I think that's how it works.
Do a trick as the third hit happens. You'll spin around, lose your item, but keep your momentum.
Thanks. I think I pulled it off in one of my races this afternoon, though I was flattened at the time so it was hard to tell.

That pissed me off - somebody drove backwards off the course just to hit me while he had a Giant Mushroom active. fucking jerk. :bomb:

I finally got my Vs. score over 7000 today after coming tantalizingly close (6999, and then losing points in the next race)...and was then promptly disconnected mid-race, causing my score to drop to 6913 to punish my "cheating." :wall:

I still need to get that star next to my name, too. I'm close, but I don't want to deal with the AI in 150CC and Mirror again.
Arggh just turned my Wii off in mid race again. This sucks.
More proof that video games weren't meant to be played with flippers.

Regarding the Auto vs Manual drifting , I find that the vehicles with really tight turning (bullet bike , mach bike , flame runner) and the vehicles with really loose turning (sugarscoot , wario bike , spear) are all best used with automatic drift , while anything else works fine with manual.

While I can drift manually in any of the above vehicles fine once I adjust , the game does a much better job of drifting for you.

In case anybody is interested , I've been working on combinations of characters and kart/bikes to see who goes best with each. I've got a general list down , but I haven't tested everyone to see how accurate it actually is. I wanted to make this list so that I can try to pick the right character and kart or bike to best perform each race or cup.
