Mario Kart Wii - Gen. Discussion & Info

That was so strange the first time we went to the N64 Mario stage! I was well in the lead and then all of a sudden I couldn't turn right or left. I spent the rest of the race smashed into a gate.

Then that last match it just said ranking had been determined, gave me the win, and then disconnected me. It killed my internet too. I just now made it back. Are you guys done playing?

I was wondering where you went - you just vanished from Rainbow Road.

I had fun tonight, though it's becoming pretty clear that I may need to switch to bikes to start winning. I hate the way the bikes handle compared to the karts, but they give you a pretty big advantage with the wheelie boost.

I started thinking the way you are here for a while and switched to bikes, but with practice I've been able to hold my own with the karts (the double boost for drifting helps a lot) and I think the karts are way more fun. Ultimately I think I lose a couple potential places each race using a kart, but it's worth it for me to avoid the frustration of being stuck on a bike at 100 or 150cc on shitty Rainbow Road.
it's pretty ridiculous you need a code for each game for friends... crazy.
Isn't that wacky and totally unheard of? Let's discuss. At length.

Sorry, I see that you're relatively new to Wii ownership and not just starting shit. It's alittle annoying, but really not that big of a deal. Yes, most games will have their own friend codes.

Maybe I just need more practice, then. I'm pretty consistent with the boosts, but it seems like that's not quite enough.

I still need to unlock Rosalina. I need to beat the mirror mode Star Cup to do that, but the highest ranking I've gotten there so far has been an A. :bomb:

Weird. You're definitely a better overall racer than I am (I struggle to get D's on any cup over 50 cc), but maybe I just race differently. All I can think is that maybe it's because I'm pretty agressive that I can hold my own. I'm not so concerned with racing as I am with attacking other racers. I just tested my approach by running three online races using a kart, and I finished in the top five in all three races.

Yeah, I usually don't bother with aggression unless I've got items - I tend to use lighter characters, so I don't win if I start banging into other karts. I try to focus more on drafting behind other drivers and on trying to get the boosts on the courses

We aren't friends, are we? I'd have to bump someone to add you, I think, but a lot of the people on my friends list added me when the game came out and then don't go online, don't try the tournaments or time trials, and apparently don't play the game. :whistle2:k

I just borrowed someone's Mario Galaxy and made a save file so I could get her the easier of the two ways. :)

It hasn't been too bad, especially since I want to get at least a one-star ranking on all of the cups. Years of Mario Kart have honed my skills. :)

I guess I'm done gettin'...

I popped in Galaxy real quick, so I got Rosalina, then I proceeded to get stars in all of Mirror Mode in one sitting, so I've unlocked all of the vehicles now...

Wow...I don't think I've totally unlocked a game in, like, forever. Go me.

Oh well, this game's still good for online and tournaments, so yeah, totally worth it.

Just one quick question, if anyone knows...
After the credits rolled after I beat Mirror Mode, I got the new title screen with just Luigi, and he started say, "Mario Kart..." and I heard "Luigi", but that's about it. Does anyone know what the actual line is?

I'm hosting a room now for those of you on my friend list. One of my friends IRL and I are gonna play soon, but the more the merrier.

nice matches. there were some really good ones in there.
i especially liked the bomb throw at the end of luigi circuit.

and i got the ghost from andy. from watching you, i was able to get over there. but i couldn't get out of the first lap. i wasn't sure what i was doing wrong. that's a pretty cool trick though.

i also noticed that your time wasn't on the rankings. i'm curious how nintendo keeps that from happening.

You guys like my 7777VR rating?

I did not appreciate that! :bomb: ...awesome throw!

Andy, did you try to bump me off Rainbow Road? Heh, It didn't work.
Thanks for the games.

On RR I had to go. So I kinda stopped paying attention for a few seconds. Then I just stopped driving. I was gonna turn of my Wii before everybody else did, but I forgot.

As for my awesome GV ghost, I think I'm in the rankings. I know the world record is 20 seconds and I downloaded that ghost, that's how I got the technique down. So unless something changed between yesterday and today, I dunno what happened. As for making the lap count work...

This video helped me more than the WR ghost. From the comments:

There are 2 invisible checkpoints you need to cross. The first is at 0:14-0:15. The thing is, you don't need to go behind the ridge like Ross does, going on top of it works as well.
The 2nd is at 0:24.
You need to pass both these points during the lap to make the laps count.

I just followed the above video exactly and got my 40 second time.

ah, i think that it just wasn't up yet at the time i saw the ghost you sent me. but i rechecked it and yea, it's up.

i'm not sure if i want to beat my time or not. i worked really really hard to get the time that i've got. but i'm definitely going to mess around with it some more.

They'll probably remove it once they hear about it more. They've already removed scores from some of the other tracks that use glitches. Once they get enough complaints about the glitch and nail down what the lap times are, they'll start removing them.

I don't mind this stuff on time trials, but this is the kind of thing that is going to absolutely break online. I know it is really hard to pull off with 11 other racers, but as long as these things exist, someone is going to be able to pull them off online. It doesn't help that Nintendo has no way to patch these glitches from being abused online either.

I guess once I see people picking Grumble Volcano over and over online, I'll know what's up.
i'm hoping i can make it, i may be a little late though.
As usual, I will be on slow PST and will not be on until at least 1030 EST tonight. But if anyone's still around I'll be racing. I know I have a few of you West Coast CAGs on my list, and anyone who is not PM me and I can add you this evening.

Oddly enough , I don't think I've seen a single person pick grumble volcano the last few times I've played online.
13 seconds on this tourney is bullcrap. How do they cheat on a tourney like this?
They don't , they just time it perfectly.

SUNAVABITCH!

I think this is going to be my last one.

I'm racing like ass tonight anyway

And finished it off by finishing last in my last two races. Man this was not my night.

I keep getting kicked off because of a stupid windstorm. While I wait, I will ramble about that I think it would be fun to have a night where we all have to race as the same character on the same vehicle.

You and me both , kept coming in the bottom almost every race.

I'd be fine with that. Any particular racer/vehicle you had in mind?

Well that was fun. No more of this team racing BS, they are always lopsided.
and the people who bailed on the losing team was bit of a dick move.

hope we continue doing this, these racing nights are really fun TMK.

Ah, everyone's offline now. Dammit. And my wife wants to spend quality time together, so I'm done for now (after waiting through four races that I didn't get to play). I didn't have a particular character or vehicle in mind; it could be random for all I care. I just like the idea of all of us using the same thing. It sort of tests skill, but mostly I think it's cool conceptually.

I did really terrible tonight, but I had fun. :D Thanks for showing up everyone.

Not sure yet about next week, but it will probably be in session (I'm just debating what I'll be doing).

Wow...I think I had a case of karma...I just kept getting blasted, usually in the middle of a jump, so I'd fall off the track...

Eh, can't win 'em all. ;)

Still have plenty of fun! Looking forward to next week!

But it takes that much time just for those things to drop from the sky.

oh baby i had a rough night.

3 things.
1. sorry about the second koopa cape. i was just pressing buttons. my bad.
2. whoever was bumping me down every time i was doing a wheelie, good job. that is a very effective maneuver. very frustrating. i don't know of a way of avoiding it other then not doing a wheelie. or getting in 1st place where i won't be bothered. but oh man. i've never been bumped so much.
3. that team race has got to go. it's always unbalanced. and when you've got less people, not only do you already get less points, but you get 4/3s as many weapons. on the last track, i got 2 blue shells. the first one, i was in 3rd place, the second, i was in 4th place.

anyway, i definitely lost tonight. i look forward to a rematch soon.

How is mirror mode determined for online races? I was so confused through most of that, but I did manage to finish in the top 4 quite a few times. And I even won the last cup we did! (although everyone claims they played their worst tonight so that must be why :cold:)

Yeah the game doesn't do that great of a job in dividing the teams.

Seems like it shouldn't be that tough. Just go with the VR scores. But I took a look before the balloon battle and it didn't seem like it was doing anything with that. Although we also had uneven numbers which would make it trickier.

They should let you form up with 4 or 5 friends and team race against other groups of random people. That would kick ass although there might not be enough people online at any one time doing that to be able to find a match in a reasonable time.

But I better practice up before next week! :joystick:

Sorry I couldn't make it. Nice string of thunderstorms rolled through around 9, figured it wouldn't be a good idea to sit there with all my electronics booted up.
