Mass Effect 2 Discussion - Fight for the Lost

It wouldn't make sense to make a Mass Effect game multiplayer-- it's not like Borderlands, half of the game is conversation and that just wouldn't work in a multiplayer context.

But, a Dragon Quest IX-like system where you can do one-off co-op missions with no story elements would be pretty cool. Even if it's just challenge levels like Pinnacle Station.

Yeah, that would work too.

Personally, I'd be pretty shocked if this had anything to do with ME3. I'm pretty sure they want to just wrap up the single player trilogy with that game. Maybe from there the series will go forward as a MMORPG--hopefully also as single player games as well though!
Or if it is in ME 3, it could be a co-op thing. Four player parties going through ME missions sounds kind of neat, but still I think that would take away from the dialogue and possible RPG elements of the next game.
Amen. If any aspect of multiplayer just HAS to be included in ME3 I would prefer stand alone Spec Ops esque style over progressing through main story any day of the week. I would rather the team not stretch themselves as well resources thin trying to devise a way to force a co-op experience into the game on top of delivering on a ton of promises.

Worst case scenario is both the narrative and game play needlessly suffer while we end up with AI dumbed down to RE5 and LP2 levels due to the absence of human partners.

fuck that noise. I hope the company focuses primarily on keeping its word and leaves this MP nonsense to the spin offs where they'll have plenty of time, resources, energy and creative juices flowing to develop it properly.

Oh man, a new style of campaign for ME 3, all in the name of essentially forcing co-op down the player's throat, would make me cry.

I guess I'm needlessly worrying since we have no clue what this is yet, but I can't help feeling slightly scared.

Maybe Bioware is wanting to do what Ubisoft is doing with Assassin's Creed Brotherhood in that they have essentially a Mass Effect 2.5 where Shepard trains other Spectres/Alliance/Cerberus people how to battle the Reapers/Geth and that's the multiplayer but there's also a single-player campaign as well.

Sounds reasonable to me, and it all happens on Pinnacle Station. That sounds fun though.

Damn I can't believe I waited so long to play this. I guess I really did have to play FFXIII first tho.....

but I'm really enjoying this game even. I'm like 20 hours in without even noticing that I'm that far in.

I don't know if it really opens up more later or not but I'm just gathering my team now and Im having a blast.

I still had the mini games, hecking sucks and surveying sucks.... I know they patched to make surveying better, so I imagine it would really suck before.

Surveying = mineral scanning? If so, then hot damn, I didn't know they patched that. Reminds me that I should really get back into my Renegade playthrough.

Yeah, I haven't played since the patch, but apparently the scanner moves much quicker than before (both before and after upgrading the scanner on the ship).

I hope not, this would just provide an opportunity for watering down the excitement and potentially lead to a bad taste before ME3 comes. But does a hiring ad now really fit into the window for ME3? (I don't know much about development cycles for games).

I've got no problems with multiplayer in the Mass Effect universe if it is integrated into some kind of spin off, be it a MMO, RTS, or something like Star Wars Battlefront. Those ideas have the potential to be pretty entertaining, I think. The Mass Effect universe is too fleshed out now to do away with after ME3.

Keep the multiplayer out of Mass Effect 3, though. It makes no sense to throw it in now and I think it would hurt the emotional engagement BioWare strives to create. I think the attachment to the characters would feel much more hollow if someone was playing them along with me.

I would think that any Mass Effect "Spec Ops" mode would involve everyone playing as their own Shepard.

There's a scene at the very beginning where your Commander Shepherd is interviewed by Miranda and Jacob that's clearly there to determine what happened in everyone's Mass Effect 1 game, but it feels like it got cut short. What happened?

Well, in Mass Effect we track literally hundreds of decisions, and most of them wouldn't make for a very interesting conversation, especially for a new player. A new player wouldn't know Conrad Verner or Gianna Parasini [two incidental characters that feature in both games], so it wouldn't make sense for a new player to be answering questions on events they've never experienced before.

A little known thing about Mass Effect 2 is that while everyone knows about the save game connectivity and how well that works, I think that overshadows the fact that we really designed Mass Effect 2 to be a good entry point for new players. So that's why we don't give all these choices about what's happened before.

Is that something you're planning for Mass Effect 3 as well? You want it to be another smooth entry point?

Absolutely. We like to have this continuity and its payoff, but we also want each game to allow people to enter into the series at that point. If you haven't played either game we still want you to be able to play Mass Effect 3.

This reminded me of a discussion we had a few pages back in this thread. From that my take away is we shouldn't get our hopes up for decisions to have huge impacts on ME3 as they still have to make sure the game stands alone fine as an entry point for new players.

I was always skeptical of the ability to have a series of games where decisions and consequences had any HUGE impact on future games as they have to make each game a good experience for new players as well as continuing players.

Maybe someday we'll get an RPG that's more like a MMORPG that can be played alone and they just put out one main game, and then the next few years are just full on expansions that require the main game to play. Then they don't have to worry about entry point issues--though from a profit standpoint they limit their market for the expansions vs. new games of course.

And maybe Bioware will surprise me and really make a big deal out of ME1 and ME2 decisions in ME3. But I'm not holding my breath, and I'm sure I'll love it anyway as the lack of any major impact of ME1 decisions didn't hurt my enjoyment of ME2 much at all.

The way ME2 handled most of ME1's decisions left me skeptical of any huge revelations (outside of a few side quests) in the third game so no real harm done there. Especially when 90% of the ME2's quests did little more for me than waste time. I would just rather they not continue down the e-mail road in the next game.

Agreed. It had been close to two years since I played ME1, so I didn't remember who the hell most of the NPCs sending e-mails where anyway.

If nothing else, if it can't have big plot impacts it would be nice if you got access to sidequests in ME3 if you made certain decisions in the past two games etc. that you don't get otherwise. Get a chance to make a little extra cash/experience if you kept someone alive and can thus get a sidequest from that you can't if they're dead etc.

But I doubt they will as people that made the other decisions would bitch about getting less gamplay with their character than other players etc.
So... nothing new on Overlord yet? I wonder if they're going to release it to coincide with some big E3 announcement.
I would assume so.

Time to bump this thread up!! Major Nelson just dropped news.

Really? Now? Nearly five months after release? Very odd.

I'm actually glad they are releasing a demo for this game. Yeah, it's hella late to people like us who have already beaten the game at least once, but it's a great way to get more people into the game without saying go play Mass Effect 1 first to see if you'll like this. It also supports my idea that every game should have a playable demo on XBLM.

Interested to see the avatar items, too, as I am a huge sucker for that stuff.

Thanks for the heads up, Kefka.

If you know someone interested in the game that doesn't have it yet, KMart will have it in-store for $20 next week according to SHC-Gamer.

Oh man, can't wait for new ME2 stuff! Just in time for my Insanity run, I'll have the overlord DLC and new avatar stuff, which I'm a sucker for.

Nice news about the release date for Overlord.

I'm more curious about what they're going to do for a demo of ME2. Anyone think of any good bits that would work for that possibility, since demos tend to be 30-60 minutes in length.

More curiously, would they have a pre-picked character class, and if so, what class?

Holly Conrad wants to be part of a Comic Con documentary. To do so, she and her friends are creating the ultimate Mass Effect 2 cosplay, complete with female Shepard, Tali, the Illusive Man, and an animatronic Grunt.

It's almost not fair to cosplayers to call this cosplay. Holly Conrad and friends are several leagues above your average cosplayers, crafting elaborate, movie-quality costumes incorporating animatronic features and life-like sculpted latex. The results, as you can see in this video, are absolutely amazing.

This little bit of news trickled out last night, surprised this thread isn't abuzz yet.

http://e3.gamespot.com/e3-showfloor-map?tag=content_nav%3Bbooths

The "leaked" E3 floorplan according to Gamespot. Close enough to the show to possibly be legit, but take with a grain of salt.

And of course....the reason I'm posting this here....Mass Effect 3 is listed under the EA booth. Get yer space boots on people. I'm hoping we get a teaser like we did with ME2. I'm guessing a really short video. If you recall the ME2 teaser, it was listing the dates of Cmd. Shepard's dates of service, ending with the KIA status and showing a geth (now known as Legion) wearing a piece of the N7 armor.

What would you like to see in a teaser video? I'm hoping Reaper invasion.

It occurs to me that the Mass Effect games are sort of color coded: ME1 is blue and ME2 is red. I wonder if ME3 will be green or what?

Honestly, I doubt we get much more than a logo. But I'm still excited as hell. :)

I imagine it's just going to be the opening sequence (minus the wake-up from being dead part.) That's essentially the tutorial for the game and I would think that would make a good demo. End it right after getting onto the ship but before you start talking about what happened in the first game, or take it all the way until after talking to Illusive Man.
Didn't realize what I typed lol. I meant is it worth getting?
Check a few pages back in the thread for commentary about it.

From everything we've seen so far, it looks like it will be worth getting.

I'm guessing the most we'll get regarding Mass Effect 3 at E3 is maybe a few more interviews where Casey Hudson and crew drop a few more hints regarding the final game. A short teaser trailer would be great to get the speculation train running wild again (like it did with the Shepard KIA status and the then-unknown geth). I expect the promotion of Overlord more than anything, with maybe a hint of the next big piece of DLC for ME2.

Regardless, any Mass Effect news is fine by me.

Yeah, a teaser similar to the original ME 2 one would be awesome to see.
Same here! As a matter of fact I just bought this off of ebay.

Damn! I want that.

Now that I have my new phone, I wanted to drop some ME sound effects on it. I was hoping for the level up music cue for my new message alert. Anyone have a mp3 file of it?

I had downloaded a torrent some time back of an audio disc rip that someone did from the ME2 PC disc. I've been trying to find it in there (since it should be), but with over 33,000 files in over 1,000 folders....the hunt is not going well.

BTW, the tags they used to call some of these sound effects in the game's code are hilarious.

What kind of phone? There are a couple mass effect clip app's for the android. They're just okay, not great, but it's ME and it's fun.

Thanks for the tip. I have an android phone, but the clip apps didn't seem very good from the reviews and I'm guessing they are recorded voice clips. I've got the source audio files, but can't find the one I want.

If I had more time (i.e. was more motivated and less lazy) I should learn how to make one myself. Probably would kill the selection out there.
AWesome find! That's one faceplate that I'd spring $20 for, no question.
I was surprised that I was able to score it at a decent price. I can't wait to check it out when I receive it.

Okay, so I started my Insanity run last night. It's tougher, no doubt, but I'm not far enough in to judge how hard it'll be. I started with an ME1 transfer, with the bonus for beating ME2 already. I went with Sentinel after reading about the tech armor stuff.

Any tips for playing Insanity? Should I restart with a Soldier? I thought about restarting with Soldier just because I'm a run and gun kind of player.

I checked the website and its a deathlink. :(
This will be my next game on the list. $20 is so a good price :)

The ME2 demo is up on Xbox.com, and it weighs in at 2GB.

Here is what they have listed for the demo's description:
Download the Mass Effect 2 demo now! Experience over an hour of action-packed and immersive gameplay from Mass Effect 2. As Commander Shepard, you must survive and escape from a Cerberus space station under siege. Then play through an intense mid-game mission where you must rescue an infamous convict from an impenetrable prison ship. Once you have completed the demo, you can carry over YOUR progress and character into the full game! The demo also includes the Mass Effect "Story So Far" video, detailing the events of Mass Effect 1 narrated by Martin Sheen.
I didn't think they'd put together an hour's worth of gameplay for the demo, though I think what they picked sounds like two good items to put into the demo. Might be worth downloading it just to hear the "Story So Far" video.
