Megazell's Free And Legal PC Games List!
Erm. CAGs. Not CAGers. Cheap Ass Gamerers.
Noted.
Thank you for this in-depth review. 9/10 I can not play the games all the way through. Either I just install them @ the center for the kids to play and down the line some of them come up and talk about it or I play one from beginning to the end during a long travel.

I find myself sticking to short burst arcade games or matches in some of the FPS I play.

I hope more CAGers speak up about the games they play on this list :applause:
I forgot to mention the maps. There's a helluva lot more variety in UFO than in X-Com. My particular favourite was the rather excellent dam level, which had a wave of cannon fodder aliens charge at me over a narrow pass while reserve troops stood back pew-pewing from a distance. The maps in UFO are generally smaller, but have much more depth - they can go up to eight levels as opposed to X-Com's... 4? and often go underground, too. Unfortunately, all those levels can be confusing as hell, as it's very difficult to make out what's what sometimes.

America's Army 3

First Person Shooter
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - Yes

America's Army (also known as AA or Army Game Project) is a series of video games and other media developed by the United States Army and released as a global public relations initiative to help with recruitment. America's Army was conceived by Colonel Casey Wardynski and is managed by the U.S. Army's Office of Economic and Manpower Analysis at the United States Military Academy. Wardynski envisioned "using computer game technology to provide the public a virtual Soldier experience that was engaging, informative and entertaining."

The PC version 1.0, subtitled Recon, was first released on July 4, 2002. Since then, there have been over 26 versions released, the most recent being America's Army 3. All versions have been developed on the Unreal Engine and use PunkBuster to try to prevent cheating. The game is financed by the U.S. government and distributed by free download.

Army Soldiers. America's Army has also been used to deliver virtual Soldiering experiences to participants at events, such as air shows, amusement parks, and sporting events around the country. The America's Army series has also been expanded to include versions for Xbox and Xbox 360, arcade, and mobile applications published through licensing arrangements.

To play, simply download and install the Deploy Client, then run it to download the full game.

Megazell's Comment - This game also works with STEAM. Then 2nd link leads to the STEAM version of the game and requires you to have a free STEAM account and lobby program.

I just noticed that many of the post that I put up had some text errors in some of the section where my text was hidden for some reason. I went back and edit them to get rid of the error.

Things like System Requirements and some of the info text was obscured.

Oceanspirit Dennis

This morning I am ill, and therefore require some kind of ridiculous experience to raise me from my man flu. Oceanspirit Dennis, the latest offering from Ben Chandler, is only five minutes in length, and yet those five minutes managed to not only raise my spirits, but also make me question the meaning of life. (Warning: that second part may not be true)

You are Oceanspirit Dennis, and you are looking for a way to beat Karen. That's pretty much it, and the game features a singular screen with silly dialogue and even sillier outcomes. The music is mental too. I didn't think there was such a thing as a zebracat, but then Google told me that perhaps there is, and that made my day even better. - Indiegames.com

Braindead is a one-button platformer originally created by Mark Johns for submission to the Gamma IV showcase sometime last year. In the game players have no control over the main character of the story, but they can use the Z key to activate springs, air vents, and even elevators to help the protagonist reach his intended destination.

The game starts out pretty easy at first, but the last few rooms towards the end of the adventure can be a real test of your patience. There's no save game option included as well, although we suspect that you won't need more than fifteen minutes or so to play through the entire thing on your first attempt. - Braindead

Far Cry is a first-person shooter video game developed by Crytek Studios from Germany and published by Ubisoft on March 23, 2004 for Microsoft Windows. Far Cry sold 730,000 units within four months of release and has sold, as of Jan 2009, 2.9 million copies worldwide. It received positive reviews upon release, and critics labelled it as one of the best first-person shooters for PC. The original game has since spawned several console ports and a movie. The game was released on the web for free with ads on Fileplanet by Ubisoft. In order to play it for free you will need to sign up for a free account on Ubisoft.

Megazell's Comment - Solid single player experience. The multiplayer is fine...I guess but it reminded me too much of "No One Lives Forever" multiplayer which was OK but nothing to make you stay going there.

Brine is an exploration adventure game made by Morgan Quirk for the Ludum Dare 21 competition, where you get to play as a girl who can hold her breath and stay underwater for a very long time. Somehow she's trapped at the bottom of an ocean and must try to swim to the surface, so that she may escape from being swallowed by a very large (and rather scary) sea creature.

There are quite a few random items to find, and one particular object will help you figure out what to do with your gilled tormentor. The abundance of checkpoints also allow players to concentrate on their objective, rather than spending every second worrying about being ambushed and eaten alive. - IndieGames.com

The Art Piece As A Video Game

The Art Piece as a Video Game is a short 2D platformer that the developer describes as 'an art piece you can play'. You're in control of a reddish-purple creature who has to go around a large stage collecting pizza slices and defeat the boss who sits at the top right corner of the screen. Green monsters can be knocked out by jumping on them, and if you time your jumps correctly you can even use the birds to travel a short distance between platforms.

The game features just one checkpoint that you can use to respawn your character if he gets eaten by a monster (hint: it's very close to the left side of the screen). There are a hundred slices of pizza to collect in total, but the adventure can still be completed even if you choose to head straight to the monster king. - IndieGames.com

It's my understanding that those free Ubisoft games were only available for install for a short time. You had to have a registered US Ubisoft account, but the offer has been dead for quite some time. I don't know why they are still available since they can no longer be activated.

Correct. It seems there is a work around which is why they are still up. But I am going to take them down because 'technically' they are no longer legal.

Ty.

Yep that happens. Back in 1997 I started this database of free and legal games. Originally, it was mostly mods for games like Half-Life, Quake and Tie Fighter. I did it for myself because I found myself forgetting to bookmark the sites way too often. I am also of the mindset that habits (video games, table top gaming, archery, comics...etc) should pay for themselves to some extent. Plus, I could email myself the database in the event of a HD crash. So from time to time on many different forums I would post some games or start a thread like this. Over time many of the games get phased out due to technology upgrades and/or server shut downs. As I started to make suggestion and install games for the places where I volunteer at I started redoing my list and culling a great many from the fold.

A lot of the dead games have private servers. Some are illegal while others are not. Personally, when I play games online I prefer to hit community servers because usually the admins are on top of the game, kick disruptive players and introduce new content (maps, mods, mutators) more often.
Megazell, you're on fire!!! Awesome thread!!! Thank you!!
Ty and enjoy.

So long as your time is spent being positive and progressive you should be in great hands.

I wish I had more time to end some of these games.

I made it my mission to finish Ara Fell 2k3 by Sunday!

Mario Paint Composer

Mario Paint Composer is a remake of the music system from the original Mario Paint for the Super NES. It is made by unFun Games. The game is, of course, completely free, but we ask that you check out UnFun Games' website if you like it. You'll find other fun online games to play there for PC and Mac!

Megazell's Comment - I install games into sub folders outside of the regular programs files directory like this "C:/Games/Real Time Strategy/" and so on. I ran into an error on this game in which I had to rename the folder because -

When I try to open Mario Paint Composer, I get a pop up box that says "Director Player Error".
Ensure that the COMPLETE file path (including spaces) is less than 127 characters.
(Answer by Udoof)
- so keep that in mind as you install. Other than that my kids and I are having a lot fun with this :)

This is a side post.

For those of you looking for a great gift to give family and friends that are gamers...consider as a gift or bonus gift making a DVD/CD or filling a USB full of these games to them :)

In July, I bought some (20) COBY MP3 1 Gb players for 19.99 with a 19.99 rebate.

jgms1u.jpg

It's really a USB stick with a crude MP3 player on it. Filled these bad boys up and shipped them out to friends with a note of what's inside and stuff :) Each one is tailored for the person that is getting them.

The ladies thought I should post that so...bah there you go.

Enjoy the games and holiday.

Cave St... I mean, Cave Trek is a new isometric puzzle game from Nicalis that was made to run on any Flash-supporting internet browser, although it seems to have performance issues when the screen is filled with moving sprites and dozens of stone blocks to shove around. Your objective here is basically to grab every key you can find until one of them unlocks the exit door out of each area, then proceed gingerly to the next room for more block-pushing shenanigans.

To make your task a little more difficult, turrets will fire green projectiles at any intruder who walks into their sights, and floating fireballs will burn our hero into ashes at the slightest contact. The blocks can only be pushed from behind, and many times you'll have to resort to the restart button when a puzzle becomes unsolvable because of a tiny mistake or a silly misstep. - IndieGames.com

Lab Of The Dead

Simulation/Management
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Science Fiction

Every once in a while, you run into a game that makes you tilt your head and go 'Huh' in a thoughtful sort of way. Lab of the Dead is one of those games. Best described as an odd mixture of Alchemy and Tamagotchi, Lab of the Dead is definitely an unusual approach to zombie games. Where most games leave the dead for, well, dead, this one is intent on making you intimately familiar with what makes them tick. As the protagonist, you're going to chain up zombies, toss beach balls at them, feed them meat, analyze their responses and - you get the picture. You're a researcher. Do everything you can to prove that zombies will respond to more than the smell of human flesh.

Interesting as that might sound, Lab of the Dead does have one major flaw. It's slow. It's really, really slow. If you're the sort who likes instant results, you should probably steer clear of Lab of the Dead because it's going to have you gnawing on someone in frustration. However, if you somehow survive the first twenty minutes, you might just find yourself pleasantly surprised by the rest of the game.

(And yes, I might have stabbed my zombie a few times in frustration...) - IndieGames.com
