Megazell's Free And Legal PC Games List!
Thanks again for the list. Now where to start....
Ty. I hear you. Time is the choke point factor.
Happily holidays Mega. Thanks for the "mega" bad ass thread.
Ty. Enjoy.
Yeah, thanks for this list. So many games, so little time....
Ty. I know, man! I know...
Thanks MegaZ, you've created an invaluable resource for the CAG community.

I'm wondering if you have any entries in your library for younger kids, say 5-10 years, and maybe any educational ones ?
Ty. Actually, I have a very extended list for children as I have 2 young ones myself.

For reading we go to www.starfall.com

For fun - My kids love to play www.CartoonNetwork.com games especially Fusion Fall.

If you could tell me what type of educational aspect you wish to target, I could provide a better link. My DB for child sites and games is over 2000+ strong.
Any of you guys playing Quake Live? PM me!
I am Megazell in all things online.

My gaming times

Wednesday - 10:30 PM EST to 12:30 AM EST
Sunday - 10:30 PM EST to 12:30 AM EST

Due, to holidays - I will be mostly off line with some LAN gaming thrown in as family from all over are here and nothing beats face to face competitions. Once holidays are over (Jan 3rd or so) I will be back on that gaming schedule.

At this time I have over 176+ brand new games to post (outside of those on my list I feel I should post) and I will be posting those when holiday time is over. Most of them will not be tested as I will be pretty much solo with them since my volunteer time is also reduced in the winter and during my own kids' test season.

As for Quake Live - I have a steady 5 people I play with on a regular basis that consist of family and friends. You are more then welcome to join us. I suggest you use XFIRE to stay in contact with fellow CAG players. It's free and will save you a lot of time. So far everyone I have played with from this site has been awesome.

Be smooth, people!

Theme: Fantasy

Iro-otoko 2 is the sequel to Nametake's Flash-based 2D platformer released just four months ago, featuring the same gameplay elements from the original but with an entirely new set of puzzles to solve. In it you play as a sword-wielding knight who has to collect as many coins and and gems as he can from each level.

Though acquiring coins reward you with more points, astute players could also destroy coloured blocks to increase their overall star ratings. The type of block that can be smashed into pieces at any time is shown at the top of the screen, and pressing the X key cycles through all three of your available colour choices. - Indiegames.com

Finding Eden

Speaking of the moe conspiracy, here's something to further fuel that rumor. Finding Eden is an action-adventure microgame created by Project BC in response to a contest held by RPG Revolution. Set within a post-apocalyptic universe where everything has been depleted of mana, Finding Eden is, oddly enough, a rather quaint story of two friends looking out for one another. Maybe it's just me but I'm definitely not used to having cute with my calamities. The combat system feels somewhat shaky but then again, I doubt that was the main focus of the game to begin with.

Short and sweet, Finding Eden is definitely worth an hour of your evening today. - IndieGames.com

Followed is a puzzle game in which you get to control two characters at the same time. The objective here is to kill your shadow copy by leading him to the fire, which can be a bit tricky considering that he will mimic every move you make.

Besides the deadly fire pits, you'll encounter other special tiles like those that teleport you to another section in the room or cause you to swap places with your doppelganger. Control your ship and destroy enemies. The ship is destroyed when it is hit by a bullet. The body of the enemy has no collision damage.

You can catch the enemy's broken piece. Pieces are stuck to your ship and counterattack to enemies. You can also earn the bonus score by keeping many pieces stuck. Stuck pieces are destroyed when they touch a enemy's bullet.

While holding a slow key, the ship becomes slow and the ship direction is fixed. Stuck pieces are pulled in and you can prevent a crash of them, but the bonus score reduces to one fifth. Enemy's pieces are not stuck while holding this key.

The New Satan Sam

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Gamepad Support - Yes
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Fantasy

SatanSam is a freeware light puzzle/action platform game. Originally intended as a direct remake of the first SatanSam game released back in 2002, the new game has exceeded the original. At the moment of this update there are already 53 levels spread over 3 worlds. Also, unlike most of my games, I've actually been working very hard on this to get a good way into the game. I've been working on this since about February and have a massive chunk of the game actually done.

The story was going to be quite minimalist. However after getting into the game I started to map out a big story. the story will be told through cutscenes and talking between the characters. A little like Titan Omega's but not as serious.

When finished the game will have (note these will likely change for better or worse);

 • 127 levels, 10 worlds, 14 big bosses
 • Map system for replaying levels
 • Support for 2 players (Co-op)
 • Full MP3 soundtrack
 • A selection of vehicles, weapons and powers
 • Rock solid platform engine
 • Support for 4 save files
 • Unlockable secrets and (plenty of) weapons
 • Lush detailed worlds to explore, each world bringing new challenges
 • Emphasis on old-skool gameplay

Gameplay

The gameplay is near identical to the old game. Basically you have to clear the screen of bad guys and escape through the door. However now I have more powerful tools at my disposal Sam can now run around in much larger levels. Using a scrolling engine developed for Satan Sam 2 and also used in the Shikun 2 tech demo, its very efficient and works just how it needs too for the new Satan Sam.

To add a bit of flavor some levels will have timers, some will have no bad guys and simply require you to reach the exit, or a few other secret things.

Completing levels requires the player to utilize weapons and objects at their disposal, be it to destroy bad guys or flip a switch or whatever. Knowledge of items is key to beating this game, as well as good reflexes.

Without giving too much away, you can mix around Sam's powers for interesting combination. You will learn more of these in game.

Way

Action/Platformer

Depending on whether you luck out or not, Way can be a surprisingly poignant experience. A two-player platformer crafted by Coco & Co, Way is probably best played co-cooperatively between two strangers because unlike many other games, you'll probably never learn your companion's name. There is neither text nor verbal communication in Way, no means to connect with one another outside of the gestures your respective characters can execute.

In that respect, Way reminds me a lot of Little Big Planet. While you can't currently customize your little bloke's appearance, you can control his arms and his head movements. You can also assign a number of expressions to him, something that can lead into a comical flurry of pantomime at times. This will happen fairly frequently, folks. A lot of your time in Way will be spent guiding your partner along his section of the game; you'll be able to see platforms invisible to them and vice versa. Since there are no alternate means of communication, this is going to result in a lot of frantic flailing.

Sadly, the lobby's all but a ghost town right now but that can be attributed to the fact that Way is still in its infancy. Still, why not get together with your fellow Indiegames Blog readers and check it out? It might bring an unexpected smile to the end of your weekend. - IndieGames.com

8-Bit Halloween

Shooter/Platformer
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Fantasy

8-Bit Halloween is a short but sweet platformer that's in the style of the Castlevania series, created by Darkleo just in time for the All Hallows' Eve celebration. You play as Jackie-Gun, a buffed-up grunt who happens to be stuck in a cemetery with the exit door mysteriously locked at the start of the game. A friendly apparition appears out of nowhere and offers to help our hero escape, but before it can do so Jackie must find and rescue five of his other ghostly friends (who somehow can't pass through the bars of the cages holding them in).

The game doesn't feature any sort of checkpoint system, so you'll have to play through the entire adventure in one go. Freeing ghosts also reward you with just one point of health, but you will lose it just as quickly if you don't watch your step when walking on a dead man's grave. One minor gripe here is that the developer had decided to use copyrighted music, and there's really no way to turn it off other than reducing the volume on your speakers and muting the sound effects at the same time. - IndieGames.com

Prison Break

Prison Break is a 3D rail shooter that features only one level to play through, created by Wilson Saunder for the Ludum Dare 21 game development competition. You assume the role of a prison guard who has to kill all of the escaping convicts with just a six-shooter in hand, although it does seem that he never runs out of bullets to reload the chambers of his weapon.

The escapees aren't that well-equipped in the arms department either. All they can do is throw knives at you, repeatedly, until you incapacitate them by filling their polygonal bodies with hot lead. It's pretty fun to see the corpses littering the floor as you cruise through the prison complex, and since the game is made with Unity you can play it right away in your internet browser as well. - Indiegames.com

Six Shots of Whiskey

Adventure
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Western

Six Shots of Whiskey, with its embroidered graphics by Sara Sandberg, grabbed my eye out of the two.

Six Shots of Whiskey is a rather passive game. Once the two players enter the name of their characters, algorithm magic produces the characters' stats, skills, and profession. After the game begins, the turn-based combat ensues automatically until someone dies. Jonas Mattebo provides the appropriate twangy tunes for the Western showdown.

I played around with the names some to explore the "mechanics" of the character building algorithm. When I entered two names more than once, the same two characters were created, and each move happened the same way, right down to the ending. When I pitted two people with the same name together, I got a double K.O. The total stat points for different names added up differently at times, but I couldn't get beyond 270 points.

I enjoyed how an arbitrary name made me a bar pianist with the awesome skills of glare, insult, and whiskey. I imagine the last skill could easily and adversely influence the first two. Unfortunately, the only insult I heard repeatedly was "stupid." Bring on the drunken slurs! - Indiegames.com

Mixing 1 part Command & Conquer, 1 part Starcraft, 4 parts Advance Wars, and 4 parts wacky original design yielded this gem: Trichromic. Choose to lead one of three distinct armies out to battle between 2-4 of your friends, either sharing a keyboard or playing at long distance across the internet.

It's muscles (Crimson) vs brains (Cobalt) vs numbers (Pine) over land, sea, and air on a wide variety of built-in landscapes. If you'd like to try your hand at map design, you'll find that the in-game Level Editor gives you the power to create any play area you can dream up! Trichromic includes A.I. to give you an opportunity to learn about your units on the field... but the sooner you can get into matches against your friends, the better - the game was designed around multiplayer!

Byte of the Draculator II

Theme: Science Fiction

Byte of the Draculator II is a collaborative Halloween effort that features an interesting premise, full voice acting and clever puzzle designs, made by a group of AGS forum members collectively known as the Swarm. In it you play as a vampire with cybernetic implants, held captive inside a research facility that is seeking to build an invincible yet disciplined army of robotic soldiers. Bound to a surgery chair with blood from a poodle being fed into your circulatory system, you must hatch a plan to escape from this madness before you completely lose your individuality and free will.

For a group project that involves dozens of developers, artists and voice actors, Byte of the Draculator II is a surprisingly coherent production in most places. Alex van der Wijst and team deserves credit for being able to pull it off, although admittedly the final ending sequence could use a bit more polish (especially when the close-up portraits are shown). Fans of AGS games with absurd storylines will love it, while casual players will get at least a laugh or two out of it. - IndieGames.com

Posting Update

I updated the first post of this thread to include a consise method by which I will be posting.

I have received a lot of great recommendations from members of this forum and others on Free and Legal PC Games.

However, a great many of them I won't be posting for the reason stated on page 1 of this thread.

Don't take it personally. I just want to make sure that when people click a link to enjoy a game...it's as pain free as possible.

Please, do continue to make suggestion though as this thread lives off of user input :)

Thanks,

Mightier
Megazell's Top Pick

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Science Fiction

Mightier is an independent puzzle action game developed by Lucas Pope and Keiko Ishizaka. Play as the Engineer and the Actionaut to solve puzzles and collect items in each sector.

Don't be stuck staring at the screen. Mightier's unique puzzles are designed to be solved by hand with pencil and paper. Solve the puzzle by drawing on the page with a dark pencil or marker. Print the puzzle from within Mightier using a color printer. A high-powered space laser carves the solution and the Actionaut is dropped onto the surface. Scan the puzzle into the game using an attached web camera.

Take control of the Actionaut and collect all the Datagons in each sector. Your puzzle solution determines where the laser cuts and how the landscape is formed. If it's not solved correctly, the Actionaut won't be able to reach all the Datagons. Unlock characters during the course of the game and design them by hand. There are no limits to what you can draw. Watch them instantly spring to life in full 3D. If you don't have a color printer, web camera, or spare paper, you can still enjoy Mightier by using the in-game mouse drawing interface.

Megazell's Comment - I spent a few hours playing this with my kids. They love it. It can be quite expensive though as you print. I suggest you save some of the maps and just erase the old ones as you play to reduce the cost. This gameplay is too unique to pass up though. I highly recommend you give it a go especially if you have kids.

OS: Windows XP or higher
CPU: 800 Mhz
Memory: 128 Mb

Special Requirement: A black & white or color printer is required for the final level. There is an optional interface mode that requires an autofocus webcamera supporting 640x480 resolution and a color printer.

Warsow

First Person Shooter
Single Player - No
Multiplayer - Yes

Theme: Science Fiction

Warsow is a multiplayer first-person shooter computer game first publicly released on June 8, 2005. The game is actively developed by a crew of freelance software developers and artists.

Warsow’s codebase is free and open source software, distributed under the terms of the GPL; it is built upon Qfusion, an advanced modification of the Quake II engine. The artwork and other media are licensed under the proprietary Warsow Content License, which allows the contributors of this media to use the work in a "personal portfolio" but not in any other game. Because of this Warsow is freeware, not free software or open source software.

Warsow is loosely based on the E-novel Chasseur de bots by Fabrice Demurger. The novel is the basis of the game's cyberpunk visual style, which is achieved by combining cel-shaded cartoon-like graphics with dark, flashy and dirty textures. Since visual clarity is important in maintaining competitive gameplay, Warsow tries to keep effects minimalistic, clear and visible.

Set in a futuristic cartoon-like world where rocketlauncher-wielding pigs and lasergun-carrying cyberpunks roam the streets, Warsow is a completely free fast-paced first-person shooter (FPS) for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X.

Speed and movement, that's what Warsow is all about. Like a true cyberathlete you jump, dash, dodge and walljump your way through the game. Grab those power-ups before your enemy does, plant the bomb before anyone sees you, and steal the enemy's flag before anyone knows what's going on!

Megazell's Comment - I was not able to test this game on Mac OS X or Linux at the time of this posting. If you are on those systems head to the main site located in the download section of this post to verify.

This game may be moving to must play. I need to give it more time. I played it for 25 mins. It was great ran smooth. As always, make sure you pick a server that is closest to you. I noticed on a lot of Youtube comments that people are saying they get lag in games like Alien Arena and other free FPS. A friend of mine stated the same thing but when I walk him through his game selection he was picking servers with high pings in other countries. We found servers in our area and the lag was gone.

I run private servers for most of the games I play. If you are online when I am on...send me a message in Steam or Xfire for Psswd. I change the passwords daily.

You have crash-landed on planet Notrium. Your food supplies are running low, a pack of predatory aliens have got your scent. There are no more bullets for your pistol, your only weapon a handful of rocks. The night is coming, and you are desperately looking for wood to make a fire. Notrium is a game of survival.

Megazell's Comment - This game seems to be modifiable. On the site and during a brief search on Google...many mods were made of this game with some strong followings. Worth a gander.

Theme: Science Fiction

Inspired by the classics Berzerk and Doom, Shotgun Debugger released as one of the Game Creation Society's best looking games, and remains one of the most fun to play. Be warned, however, that the game is balanced to entertain top-tier gamers... you'll find the killer robots and government henchmen rather unforgiving.

If you're ready for a challenge, and you're not afraid to let some sparks fly, download and play Shotgun Debugger!

Megazell's Comment - If you have been following my thread on Free and Legal PC Games...you will know that I like bizarre and challenging games. This game is not as bizarre as I would like but it is challenging like a mofo. The game play is rather simplistic. You navigate your characters around his world from a top down view...you must avoid all enemies and red barriers. You begin with nothing so fighting back is not an option. Later on as you progress you acquire new weapons but ammo is scarce and the amount of enemies gets ridiculous. The game is shorter than I would like but fun is still there to be had. My kind of game :)

Fragmentation

Action/Platformer

Theme: Other

Fragmentation is a Ludum Dare 21 competition entry that puts you in control of a nameless runner who has to outrun the disintegrating floors behind him (or her). You gain speed incrementally while running, but crouching and sliding slows you down a bit. Your current speed is always shown by the green bar at the bottom of the screen.

Besides jumping and crouching, players can also rotate the gravity left or right using the A and D keys. There's not a lot to this game, but it's pretty fun for an effort made in under forty-eight hours. - Indiegames.com

Ugh... BattleForge...

I played this game a week or two after it was announced that the main game will be a free 2 play thing. 'Cool', I thought, 'a M:TG type game wrapped in a RTS'. Unfortunately, this game didn't really have that staying power that Magic Online had on my when I had this thing called a "disposable income".

EA releasing this game a free download is cool and all, and yes, the first few levels I played was a blast, but the free version is so incredibly gimped on the onset that the free-ness quickly lost appeal to me. When start considering paying for the the paid key and various booster card, just to supplement my starting army at the 2nd day, virtue of that fact that the demo cards as so underpowered... I know the marketing foo that EA was tossing around, and this cheap Filipino isn't buying it.

I never played Magic: The Gathering online. How is it exactly? I know you have to pay for your boosters and such but is it just a lobby and you pick a fight? Any $ prize support?

I use to play that often in table top format...when the expansion came out too often - I left it.

Outside of videos games I am an avid table top gaming. My kids and I often spend time painting and remodeling figures (Heroclix) and making city reconstructions. That game is no longer supported but NYC has a lot of places where tournaments flourish. I also play Zombies!!! (more of board game - But it also has tourny support), Risk, DnD Mini and Chess (12 Tier tournaments).

Abduction Destruction is an arcade shooter in which the ammunition for your UFO is acquired by capturing humans and animals. Once caught, they can then be fired at tractors, choppers and army planes that are out to stop you from abducting everyone.

The controls are extremely simple to learn: hold the right mouse button to beam something up, and press the left mouse button to shoot your captives out of the ship. There are coins to collect, skins to unlock, and even the occasional level boss to defeat when things seem a bit too easy for you. - Indiegames.com

Ah, Ocular Ink... I remember playing this game years ago. I got stuck on a certain level and stopped playing it completely because of that. I might have to give it another go... it was a good game.

Hey Megazell, just built my younger brother (age 9) a half decent computer and he could use some good games. Anything on this list that you think would be good for a kid his age? He's not a big competitive guy so multiplayer only probably isn't great.

I have this thing for Tabletop gaming, especially for a lot of the "lesser-known" and off-the-wall stuff nowadays (usually cheaper).

Magic Online was indeed fun, and yes, it does cost a pretty penny to "compete" in that game. Funny that you mentioned prize packages, since it was in an online tourney were I decided to leave the game for good, around the Mirrodin cycle. Anyways, yes, there is some awesome prizes for weekly tourneys, but if I remember correctly, they're usually avatars, booster sets, or "tickets", which is the cash-equivalent currency in-game (1 ticket =$1, i think).

As for gaming night to night, you had seperate game rooms/lobbies, which support different card rules (T2 format, Extended, Casual, Highlander, etc), along with the weekly Draft and Constructed tourneys. For that time I played it, the game had a fairly robust trade system, where a young idiotic person like my previous self could easily sink half a teenager's paycheck on virtual cardboard cards. It's a great game to play once in a while, but just like the real world version, it is a money sink.

Nowadays, I tend to pick of games of Fluxx and Apples to Apples. I don't think either could lend themselves to tourney support that easily, but it's fun to play with a bunch of college buddies, or with the future in-laws.

Cool, thanks for the info.

I grew up on DnD, Magic and games of that nature (anyone remember Torg?). My friends and family were STRONG into Magic even after I left it. In the end, around college time for me, we settled on board games like 'Hero's Quest!', Heroclix (we only bought what we liked and never allowed dupes), Yahtzee, Poker, Chess and Zombies!!! Many of them have trunks and trunks of cards from Magic.

I was of the mind that if the habit did not pay for itself, I could not have it. So I left right after the prices of cards were dropping fast and the expansions and banned list were getting crazy (Weatherlight, I think). Lots of great memories and fun times though.

In fact, years later when I was in college, I landed my first high paying IT job over Magic. During the interview, I noticed a black and red deck still in the package on my interviewers desk (later my boss). So during the conversation, I asked him if he played. Turned out he didn't but that his son did and he bought those for him. He then went on to criticize the game and wanted his son to get into sports and stuff...you know manly stuff. So, I then asked him if he knew how to play and did he know the origins of the game...I then tied it to military strategies, art of war and tactics. He opened the pack and ask me to show him. We played a round...after awhile he was like "Damn, this is pretty good...I never knew it was about military...always thought it was like an expensive form of I-declare-war with art." Anyway, I landed the job and it was one of my longest running jobs. I think him and his son got closer because when I would tell them about tournies and stuff his son would show up at the job and I saw them from time to time at different gaming spots. Not sure if he ever won though.

Megazell now that my ps3 crapped itself, I might have to install some of these freebies on my aging pc.

Could you give me a list of your top 10?

That's hard to do without knowing your taste and system specs. With that said, no matter how old your machine is, unlike consoles, you can make it awesome with a little mental elbow grease ;)

1) Nexuiz - Great Old School FPS gameplay with modern graphics.
2) SNK vs Capcom - Great fighting game. Great character selection.
3) Project Powder - Great snowboarding game.
4) Rise and Fall: Civilizations At War - Great RTS.
5) Hurrican - Old school side scroller shooter with modern graphics.
6) Facewound - Same as above with Zombies! and in 3D.
7) I'm OK - FUNNY Side Scroller Shooter!
8) Alliance Of Valiant Arms - Great military squad online FPS.
9) Shotgun Debugger - Top Down Action.
10) Mightier - Unique gameplay with lots of fun.

Neva

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Science Fiction

Neva is a futuristic hybrid between an action platformer and an action puzzler. Each time when you have completed the platforming stage (in which you jump, fly, fight and run) you get to the puzzle segment. In the puzzle stage you have to hit the right buttons at the right time…

To understand the gameplay mechanics it's highly recommend to play through the tutorial before starting the game.

The game has overall great production values and features really nice animations, futuristic graphics with fine effects, an original soundtrack, nice cut scenes which drives the story further and a nostalgic HUD which reminds of the good old Amiga days.

Megazell's Comment - The author of this game has a FB page but it's is only visible to FB members. Here it is for those of you that FB - http://www.facebook.com/group.php?v=info&gid=72927930206
