Closed World

Adventure
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Social Issues
Theme: Fantasy

A Closed World was created to be a digital game that deals with queer issues, something that's very uncommon in games right now. Game designers and marketing professionals alike have cited a number of reasons for this, ranging from a perception of institutional homophobia in game culture to a genuine desire on the part of game designers to "get it right" and create games with compelling queer content, rather than feeling that the element is merely "tacked on" in the end. The goal of this research was to present the design team with the challenge of creating a game that had this compelling queer content, and to observe the ideas and hardships they considered and encountered along the way, so that we could learn more about how to approach those challenges in other design contexts. The project left the ultimate message of the game open to the creators; what was important to discover were the challenges the team faced trying to include queer content in the game, and the strategies they used to tell the story they wanted to tell. The result is a game that asks us to carefully consider what we think of as "normal," and what is needed to live in the world and be true to one's self.

Liero

Shooter/Platformer
Single Player - No
Multiplayer - Yes
Gamepad Support
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Fantasy

In Liero, two worms fight each other to death for score (or frags) using a choice of five weapons from a total of 40 in a two-dimensional map. Most of the terrain, except for indestructible rocks, may be dug or destroyed by explosions. In addition to the weaponry, each player has a ninja rope which can be used to get to higher places and move faster through the map.

"Liero" is Finnish for earthworm.

Megazell's Comment - So I played this game for 10 mins with my kid last night. She did not like it but my wife did. After finishing I did some digging turns out there is a BIG tournament crowd in NYC based on this game. Going to check it out some day but I was shocked I thought I knew about all of the PC game sections of this city. Glad to see I can still learn a new thing or two.

You are free to go and do as you please, the essence of a pure hack and slash game.

Features:
Hack and slash style gameplay, role-playing elements, character customizations and evolution, unique and huge world, configuration utility and a few wicked tricks!

Megazell's Comment - Gotta tell you. I love this games creation screen...not much there for visual changes but the background questions that lead to your stats are AWESOME. This is a 3D action RPG that has HOURS and HOURS of gameplay.

Also there some MMORPGs that are sidescrollers also.

Hey Megazell, thanks for the list!

One recommendation though: do you think you could make a note of which games are LAN only? My friends and I tried to play Rise & Fall, but found out it was LAN only after we installed it. I'm wondering if it's the only one and it was just bad luck on our part.

Not sure if I can go through all the games and single them out as INTERNET or LAN only. Even games that are LAN only can still be played online in some format.

For example - I can play MUGEN online with some ppl I know by using a 'PC Anywhere-type' of software that allows them to input joypad commands as 2nd player from where ever they are.

Did you host the game first or where you looking for a dedicated or community server?

I have not played that game in a long time but I think I remember playing online so long as someone else was hosting. I could be wrong though.

No problem, I should've realized it would be hard to go back and check for 400+ games :)

I looked for a community server first, but it asked me to login. When I tried to login, it asked for a serial code or something like that. I tried to host, but then it asked my friends
for the host's IP address and it didn't work. I could have had the wrong IP though.

Duel 6 Reloaded

Shooter/Platformer

Theme: Fantasy

Duel 6 Reloaded, formerly known as "Duel 6," is a multiplayer platform deathmatch game for up to 8 players on one computer. The game features 25 different arenas to fight in, and many different weapons and power-ups. The graphics combine 2d sprites and 3d platforms, a trademark of the series.

From The Developer - Quite a big success of the Duel 5 game forced me to create a sequel with not just only better graphics, but also many more improvements increasing the fun of playing it. The Reloaded version is then another improvement, among others allowing the game of up to 8 players on a single computer. The game contains 25 different arenas, in which you can battle and you also can create your own using the editor. The weapon arsenal expanded to 16 pieces.

The game is available in both Czech and English. You can change the language in the data\config.txt file by un-commenting (i.e. removing the // sequence) the line containing the lang lang/english.lang command.

Megazell's Comment - Make sure you make that change if you only know English. Great little fast split-screen game. I've been playing this one since part 1. This part is one of the best and has the most maps online for you to DL.

Megazell,
Do you know of any problems Full Spectrum Warrior has with Windows 7? I installed it last night and the installation went through, but when I try to play the game I double click the icon and it just cycles and never loads. I've tried it in every compatibility mode available and neither works.

Any help would be appreciated. I might have to just try it on my desktop that has XP on it.

That game was made to run on 98, ME and XP. The site that uploaded claimed that it worked with all OS with the specs I posted. I would not be surprised if it did not work 100% with Win 7. It work fine on XP. We have 1 Win 7 machine @ the center. I can try it on there on Monday and see if it works.

Finally ended RUNMAN...great and beautiful game!

Finally ended Secret Maryo Chronicles (every map currently out)...can not reccomend that game enough.

Still working on 'Area 51', 'The Power', 'Streets Of Rage Remake' and 'Shotgun Debugger.'

Every other action game that can be ended has been ended. :)

Samurai Railroad Mansion is an excellent fight game done in Java, simple to play, where the user plays the part of a samurai and combat with your sword against other soldiers. The samurai has aims like defeat bad guys, protect unprotected geishas and undefended samurai.

It works in the following way: three images appear on-screen where you can see samurai, geishas, trains or other objects. Before each phase a brief explanation appears to tell you how many points you`ll win or lose when you put an image in a certain place. For example, certain samurai when they get hit with a sword return the hit and you could be defeated.

A way for the user to access the oriental culture from an interesting point of view.
