Echoes is a modern take on Asteroids that increases the intensity and pace of that game while remaining true to the basic concept behind it.

Now with added Zoot's!!!

And un-lockable Crack! bonus game.

Shadow Armada

Turn Based Strategy
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - Yes

Theme: Science Fiction

In Shadow Armada you take control of a small rag-tag fleet of warships and take part in space battles with other fleets. These battles can get pretty intense. There are often ships colliding everywhere and projectiles flying every-which-way!

The core gameplay involves setting a trajectory for each ship every turn. Ships can only move within a certain area around them, however, making tight turns difficult to achieve at higher speeds. You can order the ships to fire weapons at specific points along this trajectory as well, making gameplay more strategic by causing it to be foolhardy to rush at enemies. Each ship has a finite amount of weapons to fire, although some weapons slowly regenerate, making ammo-conservation a must.

NetStorm: Islands At War

Real Time Strategy
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - Yes
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Science Fiction

NetStorm is an old RTS game that has a very unique premise.

The story takes place in the world of Nimbus, a planet which is made up of floating islands and ruled by the god-like beings named Furies representing Sun, Rain, Wind and Thunder. The planet's population now lives on these small floating islands, each with its own high priest; their only link to the furies. The islands battle each other in order to capture and sacrifice the priests of their enemies to their own Fury so that they may gain knowledge and power.

The battle-map consists of a number of islands, each one controlled by an individual player. Each player has a priest unit watching over their island which the enemy must capture and sacrifice using their own priest.
Sacrificing a priest allows you to obtain one of the four elemental furies.

The furies obtained from sacrifices allow you to research new technologies and much more powerful units to add into your arsenal. To actually capture a priest you must build and connect bridges into the other rival islands. Battles are waged by stationary weapons only. Your objective is to render the enemy priest completely immobile so you can capture him using a transport and move him to your constructed altar for the ultimate sacrifice. Once the priest is tied up to the altar you will be able to choose a technology to unlock, upon sacrifice the technology is ready to be used.

Resources are obtained by collecting storm crystals which can be used to build new units. These storm crystals can be collected from storm geysers using transports (which are the only mobile units in the game).

There are several classes of units, including offensive, defensive, and transport units. One of the best features in NetStorm’s gameplay is the unit balancing system.
The basic balance is such: The stronger a weapon is, the less versatile it is. Weaker weapons are really versatile and can fire in any direction, while powerful weapons can only fire in a straight line with a predefined location or marker. This balance makes for some interesting strategies where the strongest and most expensive weapon in the game can be easily destroyed by a cheap weapon if it's out of its line of fire.

NetStorm has been made foremost for online competitive multiplayer with a neat ranking system and a priest leveling system that carries on from a game to another.
A singleplayer mode is also present but it's mainly used as offline practice for new players.

Graphically, NetStorm looks dated in comparison to other newer RTS games, but its not much of a down point. The Sounds are good and fit well into the game and it's probably one the earliest games to use real 3D sound.

Netstorm’s innovation makes it a really enjoyable and challenging game and I can recommend it if you need an alternative from the typical RTS.

7th Swarming of the Machines

Shooter/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Science Fiction

This was based around a concept chosen for a Ludum Dare back in 2006, 'swarms'. In it, platforms randomly float in space. The aim of the game is to simply collect all the objects in the level, while avoiding getting squished by the floating platforms (you are equipped with a jetpack and a gun). It's a great bare-bones concept that could have been developed a whole lot more but as with so many other Ludum Dare entries, wasn't.

Megazell's Comment - I thought this game was worth posting up. It's short but had a great gameplay mechanic.

Igneous
Megazell's Top Pick

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Fantasy

Igneous is an action platformer where you play as a tiki totem trying to escape from a raging volcano. By running and jumping, players have to navigate their way through dark caverns, forge raging lava rivers and cross crumbling bridges to make it out of the inferno alive. With stunning graphics and intense physics, each level is a new challenge to overcome. Easy to pick up, but hard to master, Igneous is an adventure you won't soon forget! Escape!

Megazell's Comment - You need a beefy system but this game is so fucking good. It's short...only 3 levels but it has a mode that will keep it on your hard drive for some time. The game runs and plays so smooth it's almost a shame it's free. Almost.

Jumper
Jumper Redux
Jumper Two
Jumper Three

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Fantasy

Jumper

Ogmo is a failed experiment stuck in an abandoned lab, and it is your job to get him out. Your only weapon: the ability to double jump. And double jump you will, as Jumper contains some of the most inspired, hardcore, and incredibly tough-but-fair stage designs ever. Any hardcore 2D platformer fan will love to hate the intense difficulty.

Jumper Redux

Revisit the first Jumper game with vastly improved graphics and sound. Attempt to get through the original level-set, perfectly recreated in all its hardcore glory, or take on the brand new Redux mode, which contains another new set of stage designs. Challange up to 3 friends to online multiplayer (TCP/IP) and race through any single-player stages, or go to practice mode and revisit any stage you have reached in any of the other modes. Graphics redone by BBaller, audio by Mocha Man.

Jumper Two

Ogmo is back, with some new moves and a brand new physics engine! Use the new wall jump and skid jump, along with the trusty old double jump to make your way through 60 new, devious stage designs. Ogmo is no longer stuck in the lab - there are 10 unique worlds to get through, complete with an engaging storyline. Also included is the Jumper Two Editor, a powerful level creation tool which allows you to create, play and share 10-stage sectors, controlling everything down to the physics.

Jumper Three

Ogmo returns in Jumper Three, 3 years since his last appearance. Guide Ogmo in his search for a home on a myserious planet. Over the course of the game Ogmo will split into five seperate forms with completely different abilities, and you will have to switch between each of them to overcome the many obstacles in your path. Features 50+ stages. USB gamepad support is included.

Megazell's Comment - Matt Make Games is a consistent developer on this list. Some of his other games are on here and all are great...Runman, Flail and now JUMPER. Great platformer series. I highly recommend those that are into platformers to check this out!

The Breakdown

Adventure
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Drama

The Breakdown is an old school, point'n click adventure game. Like the ones made by Lucasarts (but not as cool). From your childhood, remember? If you don't, read the following:

Adventure games are all about exploration and solving puzzles. By examining everything and picking up everything you can, you raise your odds to achieve success. That's true in real life, too.

After the intro it will become clear, that you're playing the pointy haired main character, and your objective is to get to your home town and cash the winning lottery ticket in time.

The Breakdown is freeware, which means you can play and distribute it for free. You're not allowed to make money for distributing it, though. If you want to add it on a compilation cd of some sort, you have to ask my permission.

The game was developed with AGAST (Adventure Game Authoring System) made by Russell Bailey and Todd Zankich.

Dreamside Maroon is a whimsical, exploration-based adventure, following a timid maroon on a journey to the moon, aided by a hearty vine.

Aster, the protagonist, sets out on a journey to the moon. The player guides this adventurous blue character, who rides a vine in order to travel upward. Aster's lantern is used to direct the growth of this vine, and growing twisted, interesting shapes will attract fireflies. Collecting these fireflies will bestow a momentary speed boost.

As Aster travels further and further, he will collect a variety of experiences, told in a unique storybook manner.

So I finally had to time to go through that site completely. I stopped going to Gamespot years ago. I had an ongoing thread there a long time ago under the same name. It had like 209 games at the time when all of the sudden they listed a no-freeware link policy and no mods link policy...I was banned and removed after several attempts to edit my previous postings to have the link without hot linking.

Anyway, I found 8 games that were not on my list - Sites had no tags. The rest have been posted before or were dead links.

Crimson Land is no longer freeware and comes loaded with a program that opens a website every time you exit the game. It use to be freeware awhile back but TopGames (don't ever dl from them unless you want spyware) bought the rights to it. A few other games are like that on that list and some of them were not freeware at all like Necron.

Good effort and ty for the link. The 8 I found were added to my backlog for posting and will be showing up here soon :)

Nice! Ya, I stopped using GS after their mods went batshit crazy for posting stuff that is allowed on just about every other forum I've ever been to. That and the Jeffgate or whatever it's called, when they fired Jeff G. I ran into that thread while doing a google search for something. I'm glad you could actually find some games out of it, funny how we can find stuff when not really looking for it. I figured it might have something worthy so I passed it on. I'm interested to see which games you were able to use.

I don't remember which exactly but I will be posting up a few games soon. There have been more than a few forums that really bug out on power over nonsense. I've seen quite a few of them over the years. When I went to college, I did not mess with any forums while attending because at the time the web seemed unstable. At one point, a popular forum for all things gaming was quite awesome. They covered it all and I had a free SHUMP only list. Then a mod sent me a PM when I was 300 games in....to only cover retail SHUMP games...I left after posting up the PM and quite a few others left also. 5 months late the forum and it's main site were down.

Generic Arena SHUMP

Theme: Science Fiction

With my new found liking of Arena Shmups I’ve been looking to find a good one and this is the best that I have played to date. This game plays better than Geo Wars and all the others that you would pay good money for. Visuals in the game are superb as is the thumping background music. The aim is to stay alive as long as you can whilst shooting the many many many enemy’s and bullets and asteroids and laser that keep throwing themselves at you until you lose all you three shields. The difficulty level is set just right in that you get a nice slow build up of opposition until your screen is a mass of them. Weapons are down to two with a primary laser and then your special weapon which sucks everything into the screen with great effect. You also get to choose from three ships each with a different speed and fire depending on your taste

I USED TO SPEAK TO THE WALL

Adventure
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Drama

I Used to Speak to the Wall is an extremely brief interactive story that appears to be centered around the inner struggles of a chap (or chapette, as the case may be) suffering from Dissociative Identity Disorder. After being treated to a brief introduction, we're then left to control the protagonist (who changes personalities and colors depending on the direction he's facing) and to wander through the strange, monochromatic hallways of his mind. Those looking for a proper 'game' game will probably be a little disappointed with this one. There's not much to be done outside of exploring your surroundings and interacting with the furniture you encounter. You do, however, have three endings to discover. - Indiegames.com

Website Spotlight

Free Flash Websites

Below are a list of free flash sites. I've been asked before to review them and post them up on my list here on CAG and 2 other forums. The thing is that there are SO many flash games and sites that it would be too daunting of a task to cover them all. On top of that some of the games are really short. Which is a good thing sometimes. Some of them games are REALLY good and put many retail games to shame.

If you know of any site that is not on this list and that does not BOMBARD your PC with pop-ups let me know and I will update the list as we grow. Of course it has to be free too! :)

Gravitron

Single Player - Yes

Gravitron is inspired by classic games such as Thrust and Oids.
Pilot your space craft through dangerous caverns while fighting gravity and an assortment of enemies.

Megazell's Comment - This is on the author's site
Due to a number of requests, I have put this game back online. Use at your own risk.
According to some online scanners (free scanners from McAfee and others) this game shows up as adaware. Many other sites and forums report that it's fine and should be whitelisted. I played this game and some of the kids at the center have and this game is just that a game. No spyware or adware installed. The game comes with a level editor.

Spooks

Adventure
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Supernatural
Theme: Mystery

Spooks is as close to the Land of the Dead that you can get with a pulse. In this immersive Sierra-style adventure, you play as Mortia, an adorably cynical ghoul girl. The game starts with your average visit to the Carnage-Val, a theme park where the only thing more dysfunctional than the rides is the staff.

When a smooth-talking carnie convinces Mortia to play a game of darts, the last thing she expects to win is a live goldfish. After all, there hasn’t been a living thing in the Land of the Dead for a very, very, very long time. Suddenly Mortia has to figure out how to save her little fish, who she calls “Spooks” from a decidedly deadly end.

Superhero League Of Hoboken

Adventure
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Superheroics
Theme: Science Fiction
Theme: Fantasy

Superhero League of Hoboken is a computer game from Legend Entertainment, designed by interactive fiction designer Steve Meretzky. The game combines the adventure and RPG styles of play and the superhero, comedy and post-apocalypse genres.

Setting

The game is set in the post-apocalyptic New Jersey-New York-Pennsylvania Tri-state area, where the player controls a team of off-beat and often useless superheroes who battle a number of strange enemies, most notably the evil Dr. Entropy, a human jack-in-the-box with plans to bring chaos in the world.

The missions in the game were typically offbeat of featured satire of present-day society.

Characters

Anytime the player can choose their team from a retinue of characters. The protagonist is the Crimson Tape, whose power is to make organizational charts and his companions are the Iron Tummy, who can eat any amount of spicy food without suffering intestinal distress, Treader Man who is a fantastic swimmer, the Tropical Oil Man, who defeats villains by giving them high cholesterol, the Oxide Man who can damage mechanical enemies such as robots etc.

Every character has three stats which help him in battle: Brawn stat determines weapon damage, Brains affects the effectiveness of super powers, and Toughness is the character's defense.

Each character can be taught or achieve a secondary superpower by drinking colored liquids bought or found anywhere in the game. Superpowers mostly are used in combat, although the superpowers of some characters are just a part of the plot (eg. for solving some certain puzzles).

Megazell's Comment - May not work with Windows Vista or higher. If it does let me know.

Megazell, why the fuck do you have more than one wife? Are you one of those people who feel that sanity is over-rated?

I guess I'm a slacker. One wife and two kids is enough for me!

2 Wives and 2 Kids here :)

It's just the way things are.

We're actually the most sane out of all of the couples we know...also the longest lasting.

We can't all conform to social norms. Pew pew pew!

Well good for you. I wish more people would work to discover the things that work for them and not not hide behind what's expected of them.

Donna: Avenger of Blood

Adventure

Theme: Mystery

A nameless country, somewhere in Eastern Europe, is deep in financial depression. The sentiments arousing among people allow nationalist and extreme-right-wing politicians to come into power.

To the metropolis capital of the country come two foreigners: Christian and Donna.

They both keep to themselves and are seen only at night.

Their stay at the Eldorado Hotel is interrupted one night by mysterious visitors who break into their room and shoot Christian. Some bullets hit Donna, who falls to the street below and finds herself naked in the middle of the hostile, unkown city; what’s more, the dawn is coming and let’s say that her skin isn’t prepared for meeting the sunrays.

The player controls Donna, who, after securing her life, goes on a quest of vengeance to find killers of Christian, meets mad inhabitants of the city, gets into a love affair, and discovers the true reason behind Christian coming to this country.

PAX BRITANNICA

PAX BRITANNICA - One-button real-time strategy. The game is controlled entirely with one button, the 'A' button on the Xbox 360 controller.

Holding down the button spins the needle on the radial menu in the middle of the player's factory ship. The needle will only travel as far as the
player's current resources allow. Resources (gold? seaweed? who knows!) accumulate over time.

Releasing the button creates a ship that corresponds to the quadrant that the needle is pointing at.

1 : FIGHTER Small, fast and cheap. Great at chasing down Bombers.
2 : BOMBER Shoots slow projectiles that do massive damage!
3 : FRIGATE A great hulk of a ship that fires volleys of heat-seeking torpedoes.
4 : UPGRADE Improve your factory ship to accumulate resources more quickly.

Ships you spawn fight automatically using the latest in artificial aquatelligence technology.

The player who keeps their factory ship alive wins!
