Everybody Edits

Action/Platforner
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - Yes

Theme: Fantasy

You have never played a game like 'Everybody Edits.' You've never seen anything quite as chaotic or cruel posing as a "casual" flash game. The basic premise is simple: you control a tiny smiley face avatar, and you must guide it through the level to the end. That's where the simplicity ends. Levels are designed by users, and a designer can choose to leave a level "open." Doing so enables the user to actually alter the layout as he or she wishes -- whether by changing the goal, or by messing with the other players (up to 49), who are sure to be driven mad by the seemingly impossible task of "beating" each map.

Levels consist of differently colored blocks, arrows that toss you in whatever direction they point, and keyhole blocks, which disappear and reappear as players pass over keys of the corresponding color. Particularly mean-spirited level designers will place these disappearing block directly over a sea of arrows that will swiftly, and callously, send you right back to the beginning. Despite feeling like the game's developers are mocking us somewhere, and being driven to fits of rage by particularly evil level builders, we can't help ourselves from coming back for more. We'd like to think it's because of the simple and addictive game play, but we're beginning to think we just hate ourselves. [From: Everybody Edits, via: Rock, Paper, Shotgun]

Passengers

Puzzle
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Drama

Passengers is an atmospheric puzzle game / toy.

Got this idea while coming home via a late night tram, seeing a lot of different people, sharing their stories, even playing guitar.

Gameplay: Choose a train line (and a driver) and depart off with your train.
During the ride, the game switches between two modes:

Passengers talking, each stuck in a separate monologue. Catch their words to form sentences and remember them.

A train driver, overwhelmed by various inner issue, stops the train and asks passengers for consolation. Based on what you've heard from them, choose the most appropriate passenger to help.

With each correct answer, new (and stranger) passengers get on a train. After receiving enough help, reassured driver grabs the lever, giving the train a magnificient boost. It is then dispatched through subspace towards a next station in an entirely different scenery.

Goal: Reach the end of the line

Step by step, I'd like to shift the atmosphere from an ordinary night train ride into a surreal trip where future, past and fiction are one.

I'm aiming for mobile platforms (testing on Android at the moment). What would be the ideal place to play this game? A night train, of course!

Flying Pigs

Action/Arcade
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Fantasy

Angry Birds is a worldwide phenomenon and there’s no escaping its grasp. But what if the pigs replaced the birds and had to knock down big, bad wolves (actually, they’re cut and fluffy)? Inspired by the classic fairy tale of the three little pigs, Angry Pigs… I mean, Flying Pigs is as simple and just as addictive.

This free Japanese PC game puts the cute pigs fighting back the wolves, using a very orthodox method: shooting themselves off a cannon. Well, at least they’re wearing helmets – safety first! In full 3D, this game asks the player to hit or topple all the wolves in a level, using the arrow keys to move the cannon around the wolves’ fortress and to control the inclination of the shot – use Space to shoot. Obviously, the number of shots (meaning pigs) is limited, so accuracy is essential. A few extra shots may be used to collect the coins and there’s also a high score to keep us playing over and over again.

Flying Pigs is great fun and very addictive, with dozens of levels to conquer and some cool power-ups to send the wolves and boxes flying in the air (bombs, for example). Although physics aren’t exactly perfect – the pigs should bounce more, instead of getting glued to the ground most of the time – they are perfectly serviceable. Absolutely recommended for those who wish to burn a few minutes now and then. - FreePCGamer.com

Turn Based Strategy/Action

War is declared !

Have the mascots of your favorite free software titles battle it out in the Wormux arena using dynamite, grenades, baseball bats and other bazookas... Exterminate your opponent in a 2D environment with toon-style scenery.

Each player controls the team of his choice (penguin, gnu, firefox, wilber,...) and must destroy his adversary using more or less casual weapons.

Although a minimum of strategy is required to vanquish, Wormux is pre-eminently a "convivial mass murder" game where, turn by turn, each member of each team attempts to produce a maximum of damage to his opponents.

RPG
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Fantasy

"Would you stake your life on a world that cannot be saved?"

Features

•Strategic turn-based battles reward careful positioning and smart actions over brute force.

•No typical HP/MP drudgery - Instead, battlers have Body, Mind, and Soul ratings that serve as both health and fuel for special abilities. Knocking any of them to zero means defeat, so heroes beware!

•No level grinding or money hoarding!

•Diverse elemental and weapon-versus-armor system for all sorts of exploitative goodness.

•Structured mission-based gameplay means you'll never have to wander around figuring out where to go next.

•Oh, and no random encounters either, because, seriously.

•Over a dozen colorful characters to recruit and train.

•20+ hours of adventure - multiple secrets, sidequests, and endings!

Megazell's Comment - This game should be a must play for all fans of TBS RPG games. The health system alone will have you challenged in many battles as you have to protect 3 different health bars which will rudely stop you from playing this game in a traditional mindset.

is a free turn-based multi-player squad strategy game.

This game is completely free to play. Once you have registered you can play as many games as you want. You just need to download the Windows / Linux client or the Android client.

This game is played in a casual way, like a PBEM. Once you have taken your turn, your opponent is notified by e-mail that it is now their turn. However, they may not take it straight away. Typically, expect to take a turn and then wait about a day to take your next turn. Of course, you can play as many concurrent games as you can handle if you get bored in the meantime!

Theme: Warfare

I started the series with Paintball War in 1999 and finished with Paintwar 4: Crossfire in 2002. All games in the series are top-down shooters controlled by the mouse. You control 4 soldiers, each skilled in their own field. You have to harness their skills to complete each map, to destroy all the enemies and destroy their base. The game has numerous game modes and features. Released in 1998/9.

Paint War 2 continues the style of the series. You only control 1 soldier this time and you can unlock new weapons as the game progresses.

Paint War 3: The North Isle was a fangame to the series that inspired me – Cannon Fodder. It was never finished. It plays more like Paintball War 1 and has an overworld map with "first person" sniper missions.

Paint War 4: Crossfire has randomly generated levels and upgradeable stats and weapons.

BeGone
Megazell's Top Pick

First Person Shooter/Third Person Shooter
Single Player - No

Theme: Military

BeGone is a team-based multiplayer shooter that plays straight from your web browser. It plays a little like Counter Strike, in that two teams face off against each other, and you must wait for the next round when you die.

So it's not going to blow any mainstream FPSs out of the water but it's still worth checking out, if just to see how smoothly it all runs. I jumped into servers with 5 on 5 action, and actually had a pretty decent time - in fact, so much so that I'll probably try to get a few friends on it later. - IndieGames.com

Megazell's Comment - Unity games keep getting better and better. This game has some rough edges. The lag is the more prominent one to date. I have notice that if you play it on IE it runs a lot smoother with less lag but the lag is still there during intense fight scenes with 8 or more players on the screen. The requirements for this game are rather steep also but I expect this to be a steady thing as more and more games go browser based.

Megazell's 2nd Comment - This game has had a lot of update since I first posted it. More maps, better buying menu and more weapons. It plays a lot smoother too. I highly suggest anyone into this genre to check it out.

ooPixel

ooPixel stands for uncompromised games made with loving attitude.

Since we were kids we always wanted to make games. As kids, we spent our free time playing games on the computer and then imitating playing games outdoors. Before 2000 we completed a couple of games on QBasic and Visual Basic and had a few projects but never finished them. It wasn't until 2005 when Jussi actually finished a game project on Flash.

In 2006 Asteroid Adventure marked the beginning of ooPixel as we know it today and bound us to Flash technology. Since then we've completed a total of some ten games and collected tens of millions of hits with our games. We've also been recognised in various game competitions around the globe.

Megazell's Comment - Free Flash Website. Many of the games here are made quite well and offered a different take on tried and true genres.

PBM/PBEM List Index

With the rise of the Internet, postal gaming and postal games zines have largely been replaced by e-mail and websites. Play by mail games differ from popular online multiplayer games in that, for most computerized multiplayer games, the players have to be online at the same time. With a play by mail game, the players can play whenever they choose, since responses need not be immediate; this is sometimes referred to as turn-based gaming and is common among browser-based games. Some computer games can be played in a play by mail mode: one makes one's "move", mails a file to the opponent who uses it to make his or her "move" in response, and he or she then mails something back.

Several non-commercial email games played on the Internet and BITNET predate these.

Megazell's Comment - This is the GO TO list for play by email games. With 73 Free games listed...it's a awesome time for those into this genre. If you have a friend or family member that use to play but just does not have the time and wants to play games...this is a great way to get them back in. Many of the RPGs have randomly generated dungeons and worlds...so there is no pattern to master just key decision making.

Theme: Science Fiction

In this sidescrolling Defender-like game you fly your starbike around the lunar landscape and collect Orolas. That’s small green aliens to you and me, and they’re really good for making perfume and catfood. You have to collect them from each level and dump them into a teleporter to send them back to your ship. When all aliens are collected you carry the last one to your lunar module and take off for another level. The number of aliens you have to collect on every level varies and you can leave the planet without collecting all the aliens but you will not get a bonus if you do so, and your task will only be more difficult as you get more enemies on the next level.

The lunar surface contains some parabolic scanners that are sensitive to the alien lifeforms you’re looking for, so if you fly past the scanners they will tell you if an alien is close by. The aliens, not knowing what they’re in for, is quite friendly and will chirp at you if you get near them. All in all – they’re quite easy to find.
…however, the mission is not easy. Good luck.

Theme: PETA Seizure Inducing Animal Warfare

Angry Birds is a puzzle video game developed by Finland-based Rovio Mobile in which players use a slingshot to launch birds at pigs stationed on or within various structures, with the intent of destroying all the pigs on the playfield. Inspired primarily by a sketch of stylized wingless birds, the game was first released for Apple's iOS in December 2009. Since that time, over 12 million copies of the game have been purchased from Apple's App Store, which has prompted the company to design versions for other touchscreen-based smartphones, such as those using the Android operating system, among others. Rovio Mobile has supported Angry Birds with numerous free updates that add additional game content, and the company has even released stand-alone holiday versions of the game.

Megazell's Comment - You have to install a lobby program called 'Intel App Center.' My limited experiene with it is seems to be OK. They have a ton of free software and free games available on their. Rebirth

Puzzle

I'm not really sure if I should subject you to this. If you thought you'd played some twisted indie games in your time, Rebirth is about be added to your list of twist.

Mr Guertin, who has worked previously on the likes of Aquaria and Art of Crime, describes the game as "an atmospheric, poem-like game based around the themes of sacrifice, faith and rebellion". I'm not sure if I would use those words personally, but it's definitely... something. I think the best words to describe it are probably "messed up".

I'm not going to go further than that, as it will spoil the experience. It's only a short game, lasting around five minutes, but very much worth downloading. - IndieGames.com
BearPile (under third-person shooters) is listed as single player only when it should be multiplayer only.

Actually it should be Single-Player and Multi-Player
Thanks. Going to fix that, now.
Uh... that Rebirth game.

Looks a whole lot like "The Human Centipede"...

I'll check it out later today, looks deliciously creepy.
Thread Update

Many of the FPS MMOs and other MMORPGs have gotten updated. For the FPS MMO new maps, weapons, skins and such...yeah I mean the free stuff not the stuff you have to buy. Going back and updating them all would be a chore. So if you skipped a few because you were waiting for X feature to be implemented look them up again.

Taking some of my own advice I tried a few MMORPGs and well they fell kind of flat for me. I think I'm just done playing MMORPGs all together. They don't seem to be as much fun as they use to be...I start off reading the story and getting psyched about the stats and somewhere down the line I am pressing buttons just to do so with no real sense of fun or glee to be had. Could also be that I have only one RL friend that still plays MMORPGs while the others are all playing FPS and/or arcade games online.

The only MMORPG that seems to be really fun for me is 'Realm Of The Mad God'...probably because it's more of a shooter and so easy to get up and going with 1 or more people and even if you solo it's just a blast.

So outside of request either by PM or by posting I won't be posting anymore MMORPGs. The resources section should be able to take care of ya if you are into it though.

Also awhile back someone on here recommend a text based game and I tried to do search for it in the thread and came up with nothing...so if anyone or the OP remembers the name of the text based adventure game PM me. Seems I been gravitating towards them as of late.

There are 16 games up and running right now with 3 more coming soon. Don't forget to get your Joy2Key ready with you gamepad to enjoy these games from the couch or bed.

Sugar, Sugar
Sugar, Sugar II

Puzzle
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Other

Responding to the popularity of his coffee-sweetening Flash puzzler Sugar, Sugar, Bart Bonte has released the free sequel title Sugar, Sugar 2.

Like its predecessor, the object of Sugar, Sugar 2 is to draw lines within each level in order to add falling specks of sugar to coffee mugs. The early levels are straightforward, but the game soon introduces new wrinkles to the formula with color-changing gates, teleporters, and other gameplay-altering twists.

It's a simple, fun premise that is far more absorbing than you might expect. Personally, I appreciate the fact that the game accepts less elegant solutions (see above) in addition to efficient ones. Hopefully you won't waste as much sugar as I did! - IndieGames.
