Metal Gear Solid 4 & Metal Gear Online - 8/6: Rumored Trophy Update Out Now? Rumor!

On this week's Kojima Productions Report, Ryan Payton devoted some time to the demo news coming out of PSW. While I don't think he ever explicitly denied there being a demo on the way, the beginning of the show was all about shutting down recent rumors and misinterpretations, like his announcement last week of three new "products" being repeated online as three new full games. He also mentioned that this same magazine printed confirmation of Zone of the Enders 3 last year, so take anything they say with a large grain of salt.

In the last few episodes of the Kojima Pro Report, Ryan's been mentioning that he's working on the game's ESRB (and submissions for the regulatory companies in Europe) submission, so that's a good sign of how far along the game is in development. He also mentioned that the reason Mark has joined the team is help them with subtitles in the cutscenes by making sure they're well paced, so that big spoilers aren't ruined before they're actually spoken/revealed.

MB has new screens I haven't seen before of MGO.

Can't wait to see what it is like to have a hostage!

from famitsu, the release date for japan is june 12. The U.S. Version should be out around the same time. I know what i'm going to be doing the first few weeks of summer!

All these new impressions have me really hyped about this game again. MGO is still my favorite online game of all time.

I'm listening to the latest Kojima Productions Report and they're talking about the opening movie. It'll contain commercials from the five PMCs in the game. It'll also have live-action bits mixed with CG bits.
So no word on a demo dropping this month? We only gots a week left, not that it makes too much difference...
Was only a rumor.

Any chance this game will break from the previous mold of MGS a bit? I've always disliked the excessive FMV, Snake's child-bearing hips, and lack of fun shooting mechanics. I realize the rest of the world loves the MGS series, but I'm just hoping for something with more gameplay.

Actually NTolerance, it looks like it has changed a small bit towards the better. However, keep in mind the excessive cinematics, Snake and crew's immature sexual humor are still there.

On the other hand, they changed many of the gameplay mechanics, and most importantly the controls.

For example, there's a dedicated first person shooter mode available at all times, it's said that you can play through the entire game this way. However, as it's a stealth game you'll want to use the third person perspective for sneaking around.

The controls have been simplified to use less 2-3 button combinations. Instead, everything is bound to a single button like sticking to walls, cover, etc... I hated how in MGS2-3 I had to hold down 3 buttons just to shoot around a corner.

So, it's better, but not too much has changed. If you didn't like any of the MGS series, it's safe to skip or rent this one.

It was fake, just a lucky coincidence.
(off by a week)

Mods confirmed it since they lived in Japan, and had the issue.
reserving the game tomorrow for beta...

Might trade in old six axis for dual shock 3 when I pick up the game as well.
Any details on the beta reservations?

what? no surprise, but there seems to be a special edtition version as well... in japan.... for now.

note: it's most likely trailers and a documentary.

as for beta, i bet it's not decided on yet. probably a download code, disc, or whatever.

I'm going to wait until more details come out about how to get into the beta before pre-ordering. Though once I see how it will be handled, then I'll make sure to order then.
Do you think they'll give out beta for the PS3/MGS4 bundle if you preorder?
Doubt it. I believe the beta's for preorders for the game only, so they can at least hope they are going to people that actually have the PS3.
Can you even pre-order systems any more?
Besides launches, it probably depends on the system. I imagine that by announcing this at a retailer event that it could be a possibility.

Good point I never have thought of that.

As has been announced previously, MGS4 will include a Metal Gear Online “Starter Pack.” If you can’t wait to try out MGS4, the good news is you don’t have to much longer. Those who pre-order the game will be guaranteed access to a multiplayer beta test for Metal Gear Online scheduled for late April.

There's also a thread on it, too.

I remember buying sons of liberty for 3.99 so if this system doesn't have metal gear graphics on it, I might wait another year. Always a possibility of MGS4 substance, so I don't want to get shafted like that. Hopefully GTA 4 and MGS4 will only be 30 bucks by the time I finally get a PS3.

Nice, I hope they have LE for America. I might actually have to reserve a game for once.

A little more on the THREE Japanese editions (pics two posts back).

We were all bubbly following the news that in addition to a standard version of Metal Gear Solid 4, Konami would be releasing the game here in America as part of a PlayStation 3 bundle packed in a special Old Snake-themed box.

Then we learned what Japan will be getting to commemorate the game, due out over there in early June, and the bubbles sorta went away.

The latest issue of Famitsu reports that Konami will be commemorating the Japanese release of MGS4 with three packages. The game's base pack includes MGS4 and Metal Gear Online. But real fans of the sneak will want to pick up the Special Edition box set, which includes a Blu-ray disc featuring all the trailers released so far along with making-of footage. Finally, there's the premium pack, which will include everything in the Special Edition version along with a PlayStation 3 unit.

In America, the PS3 unit to be bundled with MGS4 has been confirmed as the current 80 gigabyte model with a Dual Shock 3 controller thrown in. Famitsu referred to the hardware that's set to be bundled with the Japanese version as a "special model," but said that it couldn't reveal the color. Konami will give out the details on March 21, according to the magazine.

It's worth noting that the 80 gigabyte PS3 was never released in Japan. Is this just Konami making a big fuss over the Japanese release of the previously unavailable model through the MGS4 pack? Or can we look forward to a completely new color? We'll find out in late March!

As for the bonus goodies that are set to be included in the Japanese Special Edition, we wouldn't be too surprised if they ended up coming our way as well, possibly in the form of an unannounced limited edition. We'll have to wait for official announcement from Konami.

Better picture of Japanese box art:

It seems like the Metal Gear Solid 4 news doesnt end! First, it was the news of the Metal Gear Online beta opening in April for North America (gotta preorder the game to be guaranteed access, apparently), then there was the announcement of a Metal Gear Solid 4 Playstation 3 bundle ($499.99 complete with an 80gb PS3, Dual Shock 3, and a copy of the game). Now, of course, the official boxart for Japan has been revealed!

mgs4coverart.jpg

The boxart was revealed in Dengeki Playstation Magazine (scan can be found here) and also makes mention of both a Special Edition and Premium Pack! The Special Edition will come with a bonus blu-ray disc that houses all the trailers of Metal Gear Solid 4 and a "making of" video while the Premium Pack is pretty much the bundle North America is getting (not sure on what PS3 model Japan is getting) along with some other extras. I don't know about you, but I'm seriously hoping North America gets some sort of special edition!

After all, Solid Snake's final opus should end with a big bang right? What better way to make it special than to have a special edition!

There's an MGS4 FAQ over at PSBlog.

Highlights:

Q: Is there a time frame for the pre-order to gain access to the beta? When does the pre-order period begin?
A: The pre-order will begin April 2008. Check with your local retailer on availability.

Q: Is there any special process that consumers must go through to verify their participation in the beta?
A: When the pre-order program begins in April 2008, consumers who pre-order Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots will receive the Metal Gear Saga 2.0 DVD, containing a Prologue that recaps the Metal Gear franchise, a 20th Anniversary retrospective, character bios for Big Boss, Liquid Snake, Solidus Snake, and Solid Snake, plus a collection of international trailers of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. This pre-order package also contains an insert with a download code and special instructions for accessing the Metal Gear Online beta test when it goes live in late April.
