I've seen exactly the same thing (with SMB) on my component cable HDTV setup. So I don't think it's the TV. I just figured the game was originally like that (only played it a few times 18 years ago).
While I haven't played the original version that much (at least besides pirated versions), I don't recall this being an issue at all so I surprised by seeing these issues in the game. Maybe my memory's not that good after all.
I played it on my crappy composite cables and I've seen it happen too, though I've only noticed it on world 8-4 with the piranna plants.
I see it more often then that, usually in the world 3-1 through 3-3 levels and maybe 4-1, too.
It's good to see that I'm not the only one experiencing these issues (maybe that's not so good either), so now I'm guessing it's a problem with the games unless it could have to do with the Wii. I'll have to see how it holds up when I head back to AZ and try it out on TV that were bought less than two year ago.
You guys who want SMB3, if you still have a GC, get the GameBoy player and the GBA cart.
And how many times more expensive would that be over the $5 cost it would take to play it on the Wii? Not worth it, despite how good that game is. I'd rather hold out and pay the cheap price compared to paying out the ass to play it ASAP.
I don't think it loses a thing. Me and my friends regularly play 2 player on the NES, and it's as fun as it ever was.
I think SMB3 established a lot of the series' staple gameplay. Super Mario World is good, better than most any other platformers, but it's got SMB3 on one side of it, and Yoshi's Island on the other. Not a favorable spot to be put for comparisons, as both are clearly far superior designs.
I'd have to agree for the most part. Something about Super Mario World just didn't pull me in like SMB3 and Yoshi's Island did. I'd also put SMB above it, too. I just got tired of Super Mario World quickly and barely played it at all for the few years I had my SNES compared to Yoshi's Island.
I don't know if it's just me, but SM64 sucked compared to the 2D games. I could never get into it at all. I'd even say SMB2 is slightly better than SM64 and I probably couldn't play that for more than 5 minutes at a time.
