From now until further notice all preplayed PS2,XBOX and GC titles are 3.99. From the Movie Gallery store I work at I picked up 2 copies of Mercenaries 2 and Guitar Hero 3.

Also if your Movie Gallery has a Game Zone all preplayed Wii, 360 and PS3 games are 25% off. Most of the next gen games that are preplayed in the Game Zone sections come as trade-ins so you can generally find good copies its just that the selection wont be as good as a Gamestop.

Edit by Io - For those with Hollywood Videos around note that this sale applies only to stores that DO NOT have Gamecrazy's attached. Also, it is still highly YMMV at any given store. Some don't participate (manager's discretion) and some are just clueless and think you are talking about the concurrent $3.99 movie deal (which requires 2 rentals and only applies to movies $12.99 and under). I've gone to about 6 stores and have gotten about 4 different versions of the deal. There is a code they can scan that makes all these games come out to $3.99 no matter whether you rent or not and no matter what the original prices are - it is just YMMV whether they can A) Find that code and B) Choose to apply it to the games you want to buy ;).

Picked up the following:

:ps2: .hack Mutation (disc only)
:ps2: .hack G.U. (disc only)
:ps2: Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly (complete)
:ps2: GrimGrimoire (semi-complete)
:ps2: LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy (semi-complete)
:ps2: Mercenaries 2: World in Flames (semi-complete)
:ps2: Street Fighter Alpha Anthalogy (semi-complete)
:ps2: Wild Arms 4 (disc only)
:ps2: Wilds Arms 5 (semi-complete)

I didn't really plan on playing those, are every single one of those titles worth trading in with the 30% Bonus for 5 games + 10% EDGE? Anybody have trade in values for those besides Mercenaries?
You know that the export code has most likely been used and if that is the case, you can't import them into Rock Band 2, right? You can only play it as a plain old stand-alone game, kinda like the original GH progressions (beat a song, move on) if the code has been used already (which I can imagine it was).
Stupid move on my part, I knew about the code thing.. but I figured you could buy a license to do the export at least. It isn't all that big of a deal to me to just play it stand-alone, but still kind of crappy for them to not at least offer the option of buying a new license off of marketplace.
mine only does games 12.99 or less for 3.99 :( I wanted to get unleashed and merc 2 :( but they didn't let me :(
Wth, I would try again later.

Actually, I might keep Fatal Frame to sell on eBay since it's the only one that's completely complete and in pretty good condition. Also, GrimGrimoire isn't worth much, might just keep it and print off a new cover at work. The rest I'm gonna trade. Also gonna hit my Hollywood Vid again and pick up some other stuff I passed on, including another SFA Anthalogy, and The Incredible Hulk. Hopefully everything ads up to decent credit. If I can get at least 2x what I spent at HV, I would be happy. So far I've only spent $35.91.

What store did you go to? Once again you are probably hitting up my territory ;).

However, I found the Portland-area HV's to be pretty bad with this deal. I went to 4 stores tonight and had no problem at 2 (though their selections were pretty bad), but at 2 others they told me I had to rent two movies to get any games for $3.99. They just said the wording on the signs was wrong and that the limit applied to the game sales too. If you think about it it makes no sense they would sell $29.99 or so games for $3.99 without some sort of limitation (be they crappy ex-rentals or not!). I would expect the rental limit AS WELL as the $12.99 limit to be put in place shortly at all stores, so get what you can while you can ;).

Mastersun1 - if you tell me you got all those goodies at the Barbur Blvd store or the Tigard store off 72nd I'll be pissed because those are the ones that denied me (plus it seemed like both were devoid of the very best titles and just had scraps left).
If you do make any trades at Gamestop with these games, please post the values in this thread:

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=202411

so they can go in the master list. There has been shocking little of that given all the bragging posts about trade-in hauls here. C'mon, at least give back a little to CAG! ;)
I won't be trading my games until tomorrow, but I'll post values when I do.
so what should i say to the idiot employees who keep tellin me i have to rent 2 movies in order to qualify for this deal?
Tell them to read the terms and conditions. Tell them that the movie 3.99 deal is separate and does not influence the gaming deal. Lastly, ask them to call the manager.
http://www.hollywoodvideo.com/specials/pv_spotlight.aspx

hmm how is this working for all you guys?
The deal isn't listed on the website, but it is active. And it is a separate deal from the movie 3.99 deal.
man looks like im driving a total of 130 miles to hit a bunch of HVs today...and it shall be worth it too (i hope)
I hope you prove me wrong, but this doesn't sound like a good idea to me.

thanks for the advice GuardianE. The a$$hole employees yesterday wasted 2 hours of my time showing me a promo explanation sheet that "implied" the rental req. They refused to call manager, forced me to rent two movies, and then to TOP IT ALL OFF...they ended up forgetting to check whether the DISCS in all 5 of the game cases were actually in there (which they WERE NOT) so I drove 40 miles for NOTHING...called them up last nite to tell them what happened and they told me "Oh, we're sorry about that, you can just come in and get the discs no prob" HA! Well I'll be speaking with the DM today and will be explaining to them the crap I went through and i'd better be gettin at least a $20 GC to make up for everything. Not to mention i should be gettin a refund for all those movies I rented and have no intention of watching anyway...man this is going to be a fun trip today...
I hope you prove me wrong, but this doesn't sound like a good idea to me.
i am pretty much 40 miles from anything remotely resembling "good deals" so it's really not as bad as it sounds. In fact, I'm running by a couple GS's to pick up some copies of wii sports to put on ebay (which will EASILY pay for my gas given how cheap it is right now) Also going to drop by targets for some clearance games and I have to go back to one of the HVs ANYWAY to get my games and my huge recompensation for the crap mentioned in my above post. But the 130 miles is total/roundtrip. I will be LOADING up on games and again they will EASILY pay for my gas (which is what...$2 a gal right now?) and thensome!

Sorry for the dumb question.. but I didn't see any mention of having membership with HV. I'm assuming it is not needed?

I picked up some games from the local HV yesterday. A lot of Mario/Zelda titles which should trade in for a respectable profit. They had some of the newer PS2 games available for rent, but none for sale. They don't have a rental program where you can rent a game then pay $X to buy it do they? I'm thinking not, so I'll have to wait it out to see when some of the new PS2 games go to the sale bin.

Also if anyone is looking for stores in their area, don't use the store locator on their websites. Just do a Yahoo search for Movie Gallery near your zip code. It actually will list multiple results. You might want to call some of the distant locations first to see if they are still open, because I noticed a listed that I know have closed recently.

Finally the promo code for this sale shows up on the employees weekly sell sheet that details all their deals. The employee had to scan the sheet first then scan the games. If anyone is giving you a hard time you might tell them to check their weekly sell/promo sheet for details.

Scored Mercenaries 2 (PS2), NCAA Football 09 (PS2), and Mario Party 7 (GC) at the Mason, Ohio (Cincinnati area) Hollywood Video. Struck out at the Monroe and Maineville MovieGallery stores and at the Woodlawn Hollywood Video.

Picked up Mercs 2 PS2, Ninja Gaiden Black Xbox and 2 copies of Zelda:TP GC. Mercs 2 and both Z:TP were new, the discs looked untouched. NGB has some scratches on it (I'll figure something out).

The first HV that I hit had a shitty selection. It wasn't even worth asking if they were running the deal. The second had the signs up but again had a shitty seletion. Their PS2 rental section was fully stocked, so I don't think they converted any games yet. I found all 4 games at the last HV. I asked and the guy checked and they were running the deal.

I still have 2 HVs to check. Unfortunately, when HV started closing stores, 3 of them were in my area. I was able to make it to one before they closed ($2 DVDs) but had no idea about the other 2. Hopefully, I can find enough games to atleast trade in 2 sets of 5 to GS. I haven't had any luck finding the newer PS2 games besides Mercs 2. I will posts TIVs if I am able to trade games today.

I think it's 5 or more and you get +30%. So if you have 7 games, you get +30% on each. You don't need to have multiples of 5. At least, I think.

Picked up so far...

:ps2: Madden '09
:ps2: Star Wars: Force Unleashed
:ps2: Baldur's Gate DA x2
:ps2: Disgaea 2
:ps2: Futurama
:gc: Pikmin
:ps2: Mercenaries 2
:ps2: Lego Indiana Jones

I have 2 copies of Zelda so I do need 2 sets of 5 (don't want to trade multiples).

I just realized that I can also use the Cellfire coupon for 2 games at a time, so I should be ok even if I strike out at the other 2 HVs.

I picked up Atelier Iris Eternal Mana for $3.99! Also got Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance 2 for both PS2 & XBOX, Wall-E x2, Orphen (which needs to be returned)...All except Atelier Iris are for trade...BGDA2 for PS2 is $16.xx trade in value while the xbox one is $10 LESS than that...

Anyone know the return policy for Hollywood Video on games? The Shift Manager that rang me up said I can return Orphen when I told him I don't know if I have that game or not...turns out I did...so he said I can exchange it, or get a refund.

I stopped by a HV/GC attached today and asked the 2 GC employee and both of they didn't know crap about this promotion. THey said the only promotion on used game they have is 20% off xbox 360 games lol. I'm going to another (about 4-5 near me xD) and might resort to using the coupon code =).

It's strictly only HWV stores WITHOUT a GC attached.

hmm no? Members here confirmed they got this deal from GC attached to HWV as well. And someone just made a thread about this confirmed that the Manager said it a NATIONAL WIDE thing. I'm sure the employee just haven't heard of it from their managers yet. But the guy at that GC told me if I come back with the ads or promotion codes or something he will honor the deal for me.

Do stores that have a GC sell games on the HWV side? If so, then I can see those games being priced at $3.99, but not if they get sent over to the GC side for sale. If a GC honors the deal, it's a YMMV kind of thing.

I think only one person stated that he got the deal at GC, and the description of how it happened was highly suspect (I do not doubt that it happened the way he stated it did, but I do doubt that (m)any other people would be able to repeat it).

Forgive my ignorance, as I've been following this thread for quite a few days, but I've seen the term HWV with a GC attached. Are these kind of like GameRush with BBV, in that it's not a separate store, just with a marker outside?

I ask because I have a HWV that (oddly enough, inconsistently) has a small GC logo below their HWV sign. They sell used games, but it does NOT show up on the GC locator, but DOES show up on HWV locator. It'll be a while till I get to check to see if the deal is a'goin on, but just got a bit confused as there was a lot of talk but not a ton of clarification.

another thank you for the post. just under $80 invested = 279.91 credit, new edge membership and a ps2 copy of marvel vs. capcom 2(disk only with hollywood cover) for me.

its hollywood video with game crazy, theres 7 stores in my area, 1 with game crazy and it dosent show up any different then the regular stores on the locator. best thing to do is call to find out if its gc attached or not. the one here is like 2 stores (dont think you can pay for stuff from 1 side at the other) but theres a open walkway between the 2 parts.
So do we have to have membership to buy these games?
I'm not a member and was able to buy.

Well, I went back to my local store and picked up 10 more games today - stuff I just missed yesterday. As this store has no indication of the sale everything was pretty much untouched. Got Wild Arms 5 and Custom Robo to keep and the rest will probably go to Gamestop.

One thing to remember - most Hollywood stores have disc cleaner machines and they will clean the games for you before you leave (or you can bring them back in and they will). I had 5 of the 10 games today cleaned and they went from being guaranteed refurb fees from Gamestop to looking nearly new - that thing works better than I expected it to. It removes pretty much all of the surface scratches.

I noticed an employee at the Hollywood here going around checking for price drops, and they had some insane ones.

After the 25% off current gen, I got

Assassin's Creed -360 - $3.57
Metal Gear Solid 4 - $12.00
Grand Theft Auto 4 - $7.88
Smash Bros Brawl - $15.75

They flip back to gamestop pretty well if you use the extra 40%, especially brawl which gets almost $30. The MGS4 and GTA4 only get about $12 each but you can turn that into $22 if you do that promo they have going on with trade two games, get a new one for $20.

There were a ton of other drops on things like Battlefield Bad Company, Madden 09 on PS3, and some others I couldn't see. They didn't have a lot, but there was some good stuff there.

Check out your stores again tomorrow and see what dropped, Hollywood is slow about doing these price drops so ask them for a list of drops from yesterday if you can.

Ive seen a dozen pikmin 2 for rental today... just sitting on the helves and nobody would shrink them to sales for me.

I did manage to get a lego batman for the ps2 for 3.99.

Hwvs that sell used games with a game crazy attached DO honor the deal... but only a handful will be selling used games, period.

Im just glad I managed to get the dot hack game saga so cheap. I did find a store with 6x guy games too. I had to lol.

ye i heard about this...some girl was on the phone about the price drops sayin WTF?! what's with these?!

How are you guys getting the newer games? I went to the lone Movie Gallery in my area and they just had old crap out. All of the newer and better valued games were still rentals. Did you just ask them if they were for sale?

I may have to go back this weekend when I have more time and see if anything else dropped.

They also had a bin with various third party controllers and stuff. There were 4 1st gen Logitech G15 keyboards. They were marked $79.99. I may get them to scan one when I go back.

The new ones (Mercs 2, Madden '09, Force Unleashed, and Lego Indy) were all converted rentals at Hollywood stores for me. The few stores I've visited haven't had much to begin with, but what they've had has been excellent. Many, many of these are shipped from Gamecrazy stores that went out of business.

Is GTA IV for PS3?

I picked up the following from the first of my two local HWV stores today and immediately flipped them to Gamestop and bought an Edge card for the year(even though I could've used my one buddies' card and saved $15). I still made over $60 after the Edge card was taken out of the credit.

Here's my values I got before and (after) all promos(30% bonus + Edge):

Pokemon XD Gale Of Darkness(GC): $7.50($10.50)
Mario Party 6(GC): $8.75($12.25)
Kung Fu Panda(PS2): $11.75($16.45)
Disgaea 2(PS2): $12.75($17.85)
NHL 2K9(PS2): $9.00($12.60)
Yakuza 2(PS2): $6.75($12.25)(Unless my math is wrong, this SHOULD have been a bit less, $2, than this end price after promos, but I'm not complaining)

So, in reality, I paid $12.99 for the Edge card after their gift of $2. For once, GS fucked themselves instead bending me over.

Are those four typos? Seriously, with the 25% off, I wouldn't expect any current gen stuff to get anywhere NEAR those prices.

If they're not and it's some sort of glitch in the system, I have to go pick up a copy of each of those to trade to GS tomorrow cause those prices are pretty insane.

They didn't give me any problems with ANY of the games thus far as far as the generic cover art goes, but I've kept my eye out to make sure they didn't try and slip a refurb fee in there anywhere on me. They were already trying to unglue the price stickers from the HWV games by the time I was leaving the store today.

In the last two days, I've made about $90 from GS alone on about $50 worth of games, with an additional $40 just about from Blockbuster.
Just out of curiosity, are Gamestop's giving anyone a hard time about trading in Hollywood cover art?
They didn't fuss at all over the 7 I brought in last night (to 2 different GS stores). They even looked up the ones with the really old HWV cover art (that doesn't have the UPC code on the back). Thankfully, though, many of the more recent games do have a replicate UPC printed on there and it is the right one for the game. As long as they can scan something most GS clerks won't bat an eye. YMMV as always, though ;).

I can't keep reading this thread, it makes me sad i'm not scoring as good as most of you. So far, 2x Grandia 2 ... 2x Shin Megami (the 2005 one), and Castlevania: LoI for myself.

Aw, man, Grandia II is one of the very few PS2 games I still want to get. So you didn't do too bad ;). And any Shin Megami whatever finds are good. I haven't seen any of those.
