MS Extends Warranty To 3 Years

For anyone that's wondering about the 2 year extended warranty. No it won't actually cover you for 5 years.

The new extended warranty that was announced today only covers issues involving the ring of death. So your extended warranty will cover any other issure that may arise with the console (disc drive failure, hard drive, etc).

If anyone is interested in getting the money back for your 2 year extension plan you can all 1-800-4myxbox and cancel it, I just did a few moments ago, it took a good 45 minutes. Unfortunetly they only refund you for the unused portion, and take a 10% handling fee (if your refund is $59.90, you only get about $54 back).

Hope this helps clear up any confusion.

Q: How does this affect my extended warranty bought from my retailer?

A: You’re still covered under your existing warranty for issues outside the scope of this specific three-year warranty.

EDIT: Wait, from a retailer. They don't talk about the extended warranty from Microsoft. That's nice.

I think you should just call customer support and ask. Even if whoever answers doesn't the answer, at least you can always call again later.
I have no receipt for my purchase, didn't think to keep it after my initial store warranty expired. Hopefully this won't matter when my 360 inevitably bites the dust... for a second time.
It goes off the serial number in the back.

You don't need a receipt.

Congratulations to Microsoft for finally doing the right thing here.

And I also feel vindicated for being flamed in this very forum when I suggested that MS should do this. Hehehe.

The one thing I still think they have left to address is the DRM issue when moving to a new console. Hopefully we will hear something about this soon.

What i want fixed is the DVD drives. My first 360 had to be exchanged 2 weeks after i bought it because it stopped reading discs...
any chance they will fix the red-ring 360 in the corner of my room that has a broken factory seal?
That probably voided your warranty.

Open Letter From Peter Moore

To our Xbox Community:

You've spoken, and we’ve heard you. Good service and a good customer experience are areas of the business that we care deeply about. And frankly, we've not been doing a good enough job.

Some of you have expressed frustration with the customer experiences you have had with Xbox 360; frustration with having to return your console for service after receiving the general hardware error message on the console.

The majority of customers who own Xbox 360 consoles have had a terrific experience from their first day, and continue to, day in and day out. But when anyone questions the reliability of our product, or our commitment to our customers, it's something I take very seriously.

We have been following this issue closely, and with on-going testing have identified several factors that can cause a general hardware failure indicated by three flashing red lights on the console. To address this issue, and as part of our ongoing work, we have already made certain improvements to the console.

We are also implementing some important policy changes intended to keep you in the game, worry-free.

As of today, all Xbox 360 consoles are covered by an enhanced warranty program to address specifically the general hardware failures indicated by the three flashing red lights on the console. This applies to new and previously-sold consoles. While we will still have a general one year console warranty (two years in some countries), we are announcing today a three-year warranty that covers any console that displays a three flashing red lights error message. If a customer has an issue indicated by the three flashing red lights, Microsoft will repair the console free of charge—including shipping—for three years from the console’s purchase date. We will also retroactively reimburse any of you who paid for repairs related to problems indicated by this error message in the past. In doing so, Microsoft stands behind its products and takes responsibility to ensure that every Xbox 360 console owner continues to have a fantastic gaming experience.

If we have let any of you down in the experience you have had with your Xbox 360, we sincerely apologize. We are taking responsibility and are making these changes to ensure that every Xbox 360 owner continues to have a great experience.

This will take a few days to roll out globally, and I appreciate your continued patience as we launch this program. I've posted an FAQ that should address some additional questions, and we'll update it over the next few days.

I want to thank you, on behalf of all us at Microsoft, for your loyalty.
Failure rates of the PS3 is very very low, not the ridiculous ~30% of the 360.
Please please please stop this.

Offical source or stfu on the 30% failure thing.

It's almost as annoying as Blu-Ray people running around saying it's 70:30 when in reality it's 55:45

Preach what you speak ;)
Too bad they send back refurbs that still break easily... unless there was some major policy change I wasn't informed of.
Yeah, they started repairing actual systems rather than just sending out refurbs that might not have really been fixed when they upped it from 90 days to 1 year I believe.

My 360 got the red rings in April 07 for a purchase in Mar 06, and the reps wouldn't give me a discount from the $140. So the thing got packed up and has been sitting for 3 months. I opened up the PS3 that had been sitting around since Christmas and a few weeks later, I spotted a Wii by chance and picked it up.

Microsoft screwed up BADLY here. I had 10+ sealed games in my 360 backlog, the 360 was my gaming device of choice. Their lateness in dealing with the inevitable (inevitable because this was a problem they couldn't ignore forever) lost a huge amount of goodwill from one of their most profitable markets - the early adopters who buy a whole lot of games. I feel zero desire to go through the hassle of going through the warranty process. The PS3 and Wii are already hooked up and the 360's already been kicked to the curb, sort of speak.

You can't just tell your customers it's a normal failure rate, it's a normal failure rate, it's a normal failure rate, it's a normal failure rate, it's a normal failure rate, and then say oh yeah, after 1.6 years it turns out we've had a problem. Not smart. If you're going to take a billion dollar loss - which is what's being reported as the charge to take care of this issue- you should do it before you get the ill will. They didn't even have to admit to any problem if they didn't want to take a marketing/publicity hit- all they had to do was say, look, we're so nice we're giving a 3 year warranty when the others won't come close. Wins all around- instead of keeping me (and others) pissed at their unwillingness to admit to a problem we all knew existed.

Too little too late? This is good news in my book though, I just can't help thinking why they are just now doing this.

Well, now makes sense. As someone said, announce this now, and then E3 will come along and steal the [good] headlines.

I have to say it's pretty poor of them to only cover red ring of death, and not refund the warranty buyers in anyway. I purchased the 2 year extended from Microsoft mainly due to fear of 3 red rings, but I'm not going to cancel and leave myself open to a plethora of other possible painful deaths.

Takes a little worrying off my shoulders as the 1 year protection was up for my refurbished unit that was sent back. Can't really argue with this move at this point, but the system should be holding up a lot better, period.

schweet. i was starting to get fidgety thinking "jeez, this thing is a ticking time bomb." I got mine used off Craigslist, so there definitely wasn't a receipt. Works great at the moment, but now that i'm covered i certainly won't be selling.

Honestly, this shouldn't have happened in the first place but at least they're trying to fix it (after a lot of negative press). I'm sure they're just trying to covering their asses from a class action lawsuit.

WTF, now my friggen console is covered for 5 FRIGGEN YEARS because I paid 50 dollars for the 2 year warranty! THAT IS fuckING RETARDED! I would ahve never paid.... oh well.
I really wish this covered DVD drive failures, I'm on my 4th 360 (3rd this year) and I never had a console die to Red light failure.
My thoughts exactly :(

ok guys just heard about the 3 year warranty what im wondering is i got a warranty a while ago that covers me until nov 08 its a two year warranty from microsoft so what im asking is do they take on the three years after that one runs out or what im kind of confused someone please help thanks in advance

if its anything like the last one then they will just add your warranty on to the end...Although this warranty only covers 3 red lights. Granted their isnt much else to cover

thanks man yeah i hope it is like that i read it covers general hardware failure to so that basically covers everything that can happen any way i can find out exactly when my warranty will go to now except to call them?

so i purchased a 2 year warranty which took effect last november and expires november 08 so when would this new warranty cover me until if they dont tack three years on to the end of it?
WTF, now my friggen console is covered for 5 FRIGGEN YEARS because I paid 50 dollars for the 2 year warranty! THAT IS fuckING RETARDED! all MS do is send you a refurbed console that will die in a few months anyway, then you have to go through all the hassle of returning it again. This solves nothing. I am waiting until they can put the smaller chip in.

Wow, this is the best news ever. Kinda scary MS is going to take ANOTHER billion hit for this though.

Now the real question is when will MS actually be able to pull a profit? Outside of that one quarter where they pulled a profit from Halo 2.

This pisses me off to no end. My xbox that broke maybe 2 months ago, was not under waranty. They wanted me to pay 140 to get it fixed, instead, i sold it on ebay for about 200 (broken, and listed that way), and gathered the rest of the money to buy a new console (Which, if I bought a core, would have been cheaper after the sale than getting it repaired). But now, of course, they extend the damn warranty. I might not have ever needed the new damn console... damn you Microsoft. I wish I could respond by not buying Halo 3, but I don't have the guts.

Note: I sweared a lot more in my original post but edited it...

As previously mentioned in this thread, they have been repairing your console and sending yours back for a while now. I had mine done 2 months ago got back the same console, just quieter and not as hot as before I sent it in.

If I can't send it back with the broken seal, what does a broken 360 trade in for at eb (or will they even take it with a broken seal)?
That probably voided your warranty.
Does this add the extended warranty I bought on it? Or can I get my money back? These are my questions. They got to be feeling the heat from consumers and PS3 price drop.

Mine just died yesterday, 3 rings of death. I order my coffin and should have by the begining of next week. I am not very happy seeing that it is shy of 7 months old. Atleast MS is try to better the situation for us all. I'm stll not pleased that they are only handing out a measly 1 month live card as for compensation though. I'm glad that I bought the 2 year extended warranty from microcenter wich kicks in after the manufacture warranty. 5 years of coverage should take me into the next gen of x-box.
