Naughty Dog's The Last of Us - Left Behind Single Player DLC Out Now!

I clicked a link and saw in the first or second sentence: "I didn't finish the game, but..." couldn't read past that. It may not be a review, but come on. Why bother writing a huge write up if you don't know what you're talking about. If you don't like the controls or gameplay that's fine, you'll know that early on in the game. I can tell you right now GTAV sucks and I don't give a shit, but I'm not going to do a 20,000 word write up.

I actually find 18 hour games refreshing and not that hard at all to finish. It's the 4-6hr campaign games that should feel ashamed to charge $60. If you are so ADD that you can't play a game over 1-3 weeks I don't know what to say. Maybe try some phone games. Most people don't buy more than 1 $60 game a month, maybe 3-4 total in a year. Because they play each game a lot and don't find a need to move on if they're enjoying it.

I thought the tone of the game and gameplay fit very well together, unlike in Tomb Raider / Far Cry 3 where it's "Oh no I've never shot a gun" and then go on to murder a whole island.

I don't care about the 10/10 review scores, I'd probably give it a 9/10 because I had some stealth hiccups with the game. I understand why they did it though, the game is amazing and is a must play. Whenever I see a Top 50 list of the year there is so much filler and junk in there, it's nice to let the good ones stand out.

Say you read a 20,000 word essay about how The Sixth Sense was dumb, overrated, and with examples of how it's boring and tells you what Bruce really is, before you watched the movie. Of course you'll just pass on the movie or watch it knowing what's coming and think it's stupid "Oh, a twist whoopie".

Edit: Did you like Metal Gear Sold 4 (and soon to be 5 x2)?

I'm also not a huge fan of all the articles expounding upon how the game gave people a father-like experience without being actual fathers themselves, but that's a whole different hill of beans that will go off topic for me (the "I don't have kids, BUT..." bullshit).
Yet you're perfectly fine with discussing a gaming experience without actually playing the game yourself. Oh wait, sorry, you made it all the way to the Robert scene two hours into the game.

You know, I've never actually read Ulysses, but I'm going to pull up a book review on the Internet. That should prepare me to discuss it, right? If it helps, I read the first two chapters.

But in any case, I was trying to be helpful by giving you my experience with this game, and how I found it lacking at first. After several hours, the game evolved into a fantastic experience for me. I thought it would be helpful to someone like you who I felt was struggling the same way with this game. That's what CAG is all about - or what it used to be about - gamers sharing their experiences with other gamers and trying to be helpful. But you seem like a guy who had his mind made up from the get-go and just wanted to argue. For what reason, who knows? Oh well, your loss. Maybe you can play the inevitable next-gen remake in the future.

I'd also just like to add, that chapter in the woods, that town, and that restaurant are definitely not "Getting Joel and Ellie from point A to B". The game has a lot of powerful, memorable, and emotional moments that you just don't get by "reading the ending". Wait, do you even know who Sam is?

Lol, and this right here is why season passes are a scam. Charging up front for held back content or vaporware is the worst thing to come from this industry in years. Yet idiots keep paying, so why stop? By the time they do release anything, nobody will care while playing new games on PS4.

Looking forward for the single player DLC. Sucks it's so far off as resell value of the game will tank by then, but oh well.

"In just a few short months since the release of The Last of Us, you have made it clear that Ellie has become one of your favorite characters in games. Today, we’re excited to confirm that you play as Ellie throughout the entirety of Left Behind.

Joining Ellie on this new adventure is Riley, her best friend and also a mentor of sorts at the military boarding school. Just as The Last of Us focused on the bond between Ellie and Joel, Left Behind explores the bond between Ellie and Riley through a series of events that will forever change both of their lives."

Looks great, I can't wait. I'm curious to see how much they can do with DLC though... I mean, it's pretty rare to see DLC longer than 2-3 hours so who knows how much they can build up/delve into.

been able to put in a few nights with the game this week and a few thoughts below, I'm just about through Pittsburgh. (no major spoilers here I believe...)

-Graphically the game is beautiful.  Cutscenes are among the best current-gen I've seen, and the the environments look really sharp in the world.  I do wish that the lighting was better in some areas though.

-Gameplay wise, I'm not too impressed.  I hate bullet-sponge enemies and a lot of the collectibles seem to be in really obscure places that even though I'm doing some exploring I get nowhere near.  Definitely wont be getting any of those trophies (and who makes EIGHT game completion trophies anyway?!? )

-AI is definitely laughable.  Tess and Ellie run right in front of Clickers and nothing happens yet I tiptoe past one and I get caught.  Also, I picked up a ladder at one point that Ellie was standing near and literally watched it go THROUGH her, that kind of action is really disappointing to see.  I expect more polish in a game like this.

-Story is meh so far.  Not bad, but not anything too special.  I got spoiled on the end already so maybe thats lessened the excitement for me though.

-Overall, really glad I only paid $25 for this on BF as I pretty much plan to blast through the rest of the story this weekend and then trade it in to recoup some of my cost.  Definitely a one and done game for me.

I got this game with my new PS3 and started playing it tonight.  I've read that it's supposed to be really good.  I've played an hour so far and it's average at best.  Frankly it's kind of boring.  How long does it take for it to get good?

After the insane intro, the first hour or two are in fact really boring gameplay/story wise. They're doing it to give you a sense of the world and get a feel for the gameplay. It does pick up after that though.

Thanks. The intro was really good then it went to snooze town right afterwards.

why cant people enjoy the story? why does it have to be action action action action non stop? theres a lot of stealth parts, so if that isnt your thing, might as well just quit now

I hate stealth but I heard that if you play on easy you can ignore it so that's what I'm doing. Speaking as someone who's GOTY is Beyond Two Souks, I'm not sure where this action thinking is coming from. I didn't once mention that. The story, after the first 15 minutes, has been boring and cliche so far. I'm waiting for this story to get better, apparently that doesn't happen for 3 hours. I love adventure games which are almost completely story driven and this definitely isn't that.

I can see where Blaster Man is coming from honestly. I can understand why they slow it down, but they kept it slow for a bit too long. It didn't detract from the overall game for me, but at the same time, it was probably my least favorite part of the game.

The prelude was one of the best ever though.

i never found the collectibles "too obscure". This game actually gave players a reason to "search" for things because your survival depends on finding items in your environment. I always felt like someone at Naughty Dog said, "let's make a game w/ Uncharted-like treasures but players have a reason to go and look for them".

As for your AI point, I always laugh about comments like those. Tell me, what alternatives would there be? You getting pissed off because your AI partner aggro'd a clicker when you were 95% through an area? Would you prefer to have key-press instructions like "wait here"? That makes TLOU another version of RE4. The whole story of TLOU revolves around Ellie being capable and you guys being a team, not one giant escort mission.

As far as the ladder is concerned, I much rather see a ladder go through a character than see them standing straight up and glide across the floor because I pushed them w/ it. The game is thoroughly polished in the areas that matter. Nitpicking at things like this just make you sound like you are finding a reason to hate for the sake of it. There hasn't been a game made EVER that covers all those bases of situational nuanced AI and animation.

I am guessing you haven't fought a clicker yet as they 1 hit kill you.
No if you read the post I made originally that all this is based on, I played an hour and after the intro it was super boring so I was asking when it gets to 10/10 good. I was told in another 2 hours...

Well, I'll agree about the collectibles. I think they add to the sense of exploration, I was just not nearly motivated enough in the game/story/setting to go incredibly far out of the way to collect. I ended up with 90+ artifacts through some exploration but I had no desire to hunt down the rest. I'm like that in most games though, I think Mass Effect is the only series where I've 100% every single collectible. Even games I like a lot such as Skyrim, GTA, Arkham series,I have plenty of collectibles missing.

I wouldnt want TLOU to become another RE4 but it does really break the immersion when you see Tess and Ellie run right in front of clickers and they do nothing. The whole game touts the importance of stealth and leaving the zombies unaware that when you see it so blatantly broken I cant help but laugh and that totally takes out any major immersion in the moment.

The ladder bit was just one example. I know games have this happen (Mass Effect and other series are certainly guilty of this too) but its just hard to really see the polish in the game at times when stuff like that happens.

All in all I actually had a lot of fun with the game after the Pittsburgh/Sam stuff, the last level in particular was a ton of fun. Easily got $25 worth of content out of it and actually sold my copy on Amazon for $33 so definitely worth the money.

Finished the game. It was good but I like Beyond Two Souls a lot more.

Also, I can understand the name of the game now. 90% of the population dies. Then Joel kills 90% of what's left!

I'd only play it if they balance the gameplay a bit more with less focus on stealth.  If not, they need to make sure stealth actually works this time.

Stealth was fine for me. Do you mean the partner A.I. stealth? Like when Ellie or the other partner runs into a clicker and it doesn't notice them?

No, I mean the times when I'd clearly be sneaking up on something and they'd just whip around for no reason at all.  Not even clickers, just the raging guys walking around had spider sense or some shit and it would piss me off to no end.  I would have had infinitely more fun with the game if the stealth was actually rewarding, but it wasn't.  Only reason anyone like me kept playing was for the story TBH.

I notice that happened to me at the beginning of the game too but later on I got good with the range and stealth stuff. Also the DLC have more different gameplay mechanics to it that you might enjoy more this time around.

Naughty Dog thinking of making The Last of Us 2

http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/02/07/naughty-dog-contemplating-the-last-of-us-2

Would love a 2nd game, but the first one was just too good I don't want it to be messed with
Oh, this just kills me. If there was ever a game that deserved to stand on its own, its Last of Us. Now the smell of money is going to make them release a sequel that should have never been made. Such a shame. ND should move on to a new IP instead of making a sequel. Money can really make people do stupid things.

I disagree thoroughly.  I'd love a sequel.  Be it more of Joel and Ellie's story, or another story with different characters in the same world.

I don't want to see them milk it just for money obviously.  But it's a fantastic world and setting they created, and some of the best characters in gaming history IMO.  I'd definitely take more.

And given how much I like all 3 Uncharted games (need to play the Vita one after getting mine from Cowboom--hopefully tomorrow if the weather doesn't have UPS delayed), I have faith in Naughty Dog to make any sequel worthy of the first.

Well agree to disagree. There is nothing special about the actual world itself. Its your basic post apolcayptic nightmare. We have seen it time and time again in gaming. What made this game special was the characters. I dont buy for a second that ND suddenly stumbled on the perfect story element to keep the series going. If a sequel does get made, it will be based on money, not actually producing a game that they think deserves to be made. Again, if there is one game that deserves to stand on its own, its Last of Us. ND should move on to new IP's.

Yeah, just have to agree to disagree

I will agree that the characters were the best part,
so I hope a sequel continues Joel and Ellie's sorry personally.
