NFL 2010-2011 Season Discussion Thread

Patriots on the verge of trading Randy Moss for a freaking 3rd round pick (essentially trading a 5 for a 3, since that's what they would have gotten as FA compensation).

As a Patriots fan, I can't describe this trade as anything other than absolutely horrible. Either Belichick's ego has spiraled totally off the deep end or Moss was making life a living hell behind the scenes. I really hope it's the latter.

If I'm a Jets fan, I'm having a party right now.

yeah - I don't know why they don't pay Randy Moss. He has been great for them and Brady loves him. I can't believe he didn't catch a single pass on Monday - I wonder if that was coming straight from Belichick. The Patriots continue to let their best players leave or trade them away for draft picks that haven't exactly worked out for the most part. They are a good team but they have zero chance of winning the Super Bowl - either the rest of the league has caught up or they have fallen pretty far since 2007.

P.S. I love it.

Zero chance? On paper, the 2001 Pats had zero chance of beating the Rams and for that matter the 2007 Giants had zero chance of beating the Pats.

No doubt they took a step back, but they're still probably at least even money to make the playoffs, and from that point there's no such thing as zero chance.

OK - I'd give them a 5% chance. They aren't a lock to make the playoffs anymore and I'd actually be surprised if they did make it. I think the Wild Cards are coming out of the AFC North (Ravens/Steelers) and AFC South (Texans/Colts) divisions this year which means the Pats would have to win the AFC East to even get in and I think the Jets are going to win it this year. If they do get in the playoffs I still think they have no chance - their defense sucks - the Bills put up 30 points on them and they might go 0-16. You need defense in the playoffs to win. I've just talked myself back into zero chance. :D

Their defense actually doesn't suck - it's mediocre, and moreover it's very young. Too much youth on D is a definite concern, but that secondary (and to a lesser extent the linebacker corps) is stacked with young early-round talent so it's not like there's not significant room for improvement on defense, and in fact I think it would be unreasonable to expect their defense not to improve as the season goes along and those young players get more experience.

But yeah, if hyperbole is the only language you're able to speak, then sure, the defense sucks.

I thought the Jets were the team to beat in the AFC East before the season. Through 4 weeks, I still thought that, and I definitely still think it now. But stick a fork in the Patriots at your own risk.

They do have a young defense that is bound to improve but young teams still make mistakes. They might make it to the playoffs but I think the inexperience will eventually kill them when they can least afford it. I don't know - I've watched a LOT of football over the years and it is getting harder and harder to single out the good teams from the bad since there is so much parity. You can't stick a fork in any of the top 20 teams after 4 games but I don't like their chances at this point in the season (of course I loved the Giants last year after their 5-0 start so what do I know).

The Patriots love stockpiling draft picks - I think they have 2 picks in each of the first 4 rounds next year but I still don't see how this helps them this year. Brady is coming out of his prime and if they want to win with him they better start thinking short-term.

Short-term has never been how Belichick operates though, and I don't see any reason he's going to start doing so now. In fact, this trade shows that he's still the same guy he's always been.

Realistically, Brady probably has 2 or 3 more seasons where he's one of the top QBs in the game. But it's not like he goes from elite to suddenly worthless overnight. Especially if he stays healthy he's going to be a QB you're comfortable with as part of a Super Bowl contender for at least the next 6 years or so, even if he's not one of the best 2 or 3 guys in the league. He's obviously very physically gifted, but he's not a guy who relies on his physical tools to play well. He started his career as a game manager before he really developed as a great passer, and I expect that's probably how he'll finish up his career - he hasn't forgotten how to do it. They won 3 Super Bowls with Brady playing that type of game coupled with a great defense. If this defense continues to develop, they can definitely win like that again.

Even though I don't like this trade because of the obvious blow it deals to the Patriots' chances in 2010, I don't think they should be altering the way they've always done business and what has made them one of the most successful franchises in the NFL over the last decade.

I was very surprised to see Moss go, but it's definitely BB's m.o.

The Patriots spread the ball around a ton as it is, I don't think this will affect them as much as dome may think.

The real question can the Vikings contend now? Also, how will Randy Moss feel when Tavaris Jackson is throwing the ball next year.

I think the biggest issue for them will be that the attention Moss commands opens up a lot of space underneath for guys like Welker and Hernandez.

I think whether Brandon Tate can emerge as a true outside threat will be the key for them. If he plays well enough to demand safety help (there aren't many CBs who can match him step-for-step) than they can continue to run their usual offense.

It'll definitely be interesting to watch, if nothing else.

Moss didn't sign an extension so he is a free agent after the season. If he doesn't want to play with Tavaris Jackson he doesn't have to.
If Tate only gets 1 on 1 coverage it could be a good thing.
Another bright spot is getting to see Taylor Price, who I think can be a pretty good player but who's been inactive all 4 games due to their glut of receivers. He should get a chance to contribute now.

The emergence of Hernandez and Gronkowski definitely softens the blow of losing Moss a bit, since it's been pretty clear the last few weeks that their gameplan is evolving into something based less on the deep ball.

Vikings getting Moss is a very key gain, and I think they could actually pull an 8-8 or maybe even a spot in the playoffs with Favre and Moss teamed up. Moss likes nothing more then to shoot down the field and if Favre can get 1.1 seconds of time (there's a good chance he won't be able to with the suck O. Line) they could end up being a great match up.

IDK why the Patriots would trade Moss, but maybe they are just trying to think long term and build up a younger team in the next couple years. I expect a QB, WR, maybe CB or LB drafts.

remember the vikings season last year, they were BETTER than everyone including the Saints, the vikings lost to the vikings in the championship game
now add Randy Moss
if the guys can get healthy and they can get their shit together, they will win SB

Favre played out of his mind last year and Sidney Rice isn't coming back any time soon.

So you know if Favre is retiring next year?

I feel pretty good about the Pats offense without Moss. They're going to run a lot of 2 and 3 tight end sets with one back, it remains to be seen if Tate can be their vertical threat but what they're doing now will be more like what they did in 03 and 04.

I was tired of Moss's act long ago, quitting on games, pouting, but with an elite talent like that you have to take the good with the bad.

That's pretty much what they've already been doing, even with Moss. Even in those empty backfield sets, there's usually been a TE or two on the field.

I have no doubt that Tate can stretch the field, but he's gonna have to make some plays deep for teams to respect him as a true vertical threat like Moss was. I'm not sure he can catch all the balls Moss could catch though, but then again Moss wasn't really catching those balls this year either.

True, the Pats haven't been about throwing deep for a while. That's why their offense is so good because they just inch their way down the field with 6yd gain, 4yd gain, 11yd gain, etc. until they are at the goalline.

Patriots have a lot of promising young talent and they have 2 picks in first four rounds of the draft, they can turn into super bowl contenders next year.

rofl look at Cardinals without Kurt Warner, and people say he's not a HOF'er, Cardinals are probably bottom 5 in the league right now

People really tend to overlook their young defensive players who are on the verge of breaking out. They have a great potential safety duo in Meriweather (who made the Pro Bowl last year) and Chung. And I think with a bit more seasoning McCourty's going to be a very good corner, though the jury is still way out on Darius Butler, who's been made to look somewhat foolish when he's been out there this season.

They have some exciting young LBers too with Mayo and Spikes, and Cunningham has shown flashes of being able to get to the QB, he had a great game against Miami.

Really their biggest weakness on D long term will be up front. Beyond Wilfork that group is pretty blah, though a lot of that has to do with Warren (Ty, not Gerard) being out for the year. I know a lot of people are gonna want them to take a premier HB with Oakland's first rounder, but I'm really hoping they grab a stud defensive end (or two).

Almost has to be a defensive end or outside linebacker.
Almost has to be a defensive end or outside linebacker.
Yeah. The main reason their young secondary gets exposed so much is because their pass rush is, shall we say, minimal..

That's why I was really hoping they would make a strong play for Julius Peppers this past offseason, it's been a while since they've had a truly great edge rusher.

^ is that what i think it is? the supposed brett favre sexts? dont want to click the link because im at work, but also dont want to click it if its favres junk.

Ughgh This is one of the things I wish NFL football would learn from Soccer. When someone gets hurt....roll that motherfucker off the field and get the game going again.

We dont need to stare at the guy laying on the ground for 3 tv ads, its already a 2 hour tv ad with football breaks, lets try to keep the game going here.

A radio personality in my town decided to put his job on the line that the Panthers don't start the season 0-5. So far, it looks like they are done already down 17-3 already to the Bears.

I don't get why Delhomme started today unless Seneca Wallace was somehow injured this morning, as he just gave the game away with these last two picks.
I don't get why Delhomme started today unless Seneca Wallace was somehow injured this morning, as he just gave the game away with these last two picks.
His ankle got hurt in the 2nd quarter (Wallace). Delhomme didn't start. Wallace was on fire in the first half. 11 for 15, around 130 yards and a touchdown.

Delhomme is starting to remind me of Anderson.

Ahh, I missed most of the game because I didn't know it was on now and on Fox. I thought it would be on at 4 since CBS was just showing infomercials.

Delhomme is a huge improvement over Derek Anderson, who can't hit anybody anywhere on the field. Delhomme can at least make passes whenever his linemen give him time, though it's usually because he's not paying attention or willing to move out of the pocket if it's collapsing. "My tackle was backed up into me, but will I move out of the pocket so I can make a better pass? Nah." *Throws the ball, which is tipped up into the air for an easy pick*

Another road win against a crappy opponent for the Bucs. But overcoming 3 turnovers, coming from behind to tie, and stopping the Bungles to get that final possession showed the team is definately growing.

Next week's visit from NO will be a better gauge
injury; injury; penalty; injury; penalty; injury; penalty; penalty; last second field goal loss. fuck all this.
+1
Titans are really starting to embarrass the Cowboys.

5 sacks so far before the half. Excellent.
The Cowboys ended up embarrassing themselves. 12 Penalties for 133 yards.

The entire NFC is looking terrible, not just the NFC West.

So all the people sticking up for Alex Smith and making all these excuses, where are they now? Will everybody now admit this guy is a bust please. I am sorry to say this, but bring in David Carr. Enough is enough with Smith. Start to move on NOW.

Yeah even though he just drove them down he still needs to go. I have watched the guys whole career in the NFL and at best he is a backup.
