Nintendo 3DS - General Discussion Thread

Anyone else notice issues of the touch screen (Or the raised edges around it) leaving marks on the top screen?

After i wiped my system off with a Microfiber cloth, i noticed what appear to be a tiny chip out of the top screen :(. Most likely gonna try to swap it tommorow (Along with buying a screen protector).
Use the stylus to touch one of the icons and keep holding onto it....then it will move. :)
Thanks for the tip! I moved my icons around yesterday. Can't wait for that eShop update. I've got tons of DSiWare to move, and I'm looking forward to new content. Didn't someone say that they're abandoning the Nintendo points system and going to straight up dollar purchases? Is there any info about that anywhere? I have a hard time imagining linking my credit card to my 3DS, of all things.
The Black charging dock seems completely pointless though. Can anybody explain to me why we need it? It drives the price up and is just something else to lose.
I've found the charging dock even more convenient than plugging the system into the wall. I have it charging next to me at my desk. I know there's little difference between placing it in the dock and plugging in an adapter, but it's just a hair more convenient. I likey.

So another question for you 3DS owners - can you see "more" of what is going on inside the top screen if you move your head to the sides? I tried the SFIV demo again this weekend and it just seemed like the 3D went straight back and wasn't dependent on my viewing angle or anything. Maybe I'm confusing 3D and head tracking though - I've only been to a few 3D movies and I can't recall if where you are sitting makes a difference as to what you are seeing...

The 3D in the 3DS doesn't project the image through the screen like a 3D movie does. It's more like you're able to see the layers of 3D within the screen. It's a really nice effect, though.

Yesterday, while playing around with the 3D camera, I was able to take a picture of an object top-down, and the image actually looked like it was coming out of the screen. It was really cool.

yeah,.. that's not how 3d works. though, crafty developers could, and probably will, simulate that using the motion sensors or cameras in the 3ds

sort of like this old dsi concept dsiware game.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPPCvVmx5Ho

The game above is Looksley's Linup. It was a DSiWare game for like 500 points or so. It's really flawed, though. It's really hard to get the 3D effect right. If the lighting isn't perfect, the screen will be twitching, as it requires using the internal camera to center the game based on where it thinks your face is. It's pretty bad, but very interesting for a tech demo.

Another Streetpass yesterday from a Link look-alike whose quote was "who was phone?"

Fun but I don't know how much longer I plan to carry my 3DS around.

I've noticed that too- but it didn't appear to be a "chip" as much as a fine line of oil from my hands that transfered from the bottom screen.

Been looking for a DSI usb cable but everyone on Amazon is not from Amazon so I can't get free shipping . Oh well, I can live with the AC adapter for now. Oh and yesterday I played a game of face radiers with Shaq from the fuck box, lol . Sadly I own a copy of fuck which I bought for $1 at the one used video store where I went to college at.
The same thing happened to me with my DS lite at a Comedy show in the heart of Minneapolis.

The fact is those features, which ARE absolutely neat, just don't work in the United States - they're designed with Japan in mind, first and foremost.
I totally agree here, Nintendo has not smartened up yet and realized that no one in the USA uses wireless multiplayer for most games. Everything really needs to be online for use in the USA unless you have a large group of friends whom to regularly play with and most people don't have that, and electronics aren't allowed in most schools so that nullifies playing while in school. I know a lot of people use these features at conventions but there are no conventions near me at all and I am not spending big bucks to go to one and stay in a hotel etc.

The least Nintendo could do is try setting up regular streetpass events at Gamestop or Toys R Us like the do with the Pokemon events. This way if you attend you are guaranteed to get hits and people who cannot get hits despite carrying their 3DS around constantly wouldn't be left out.

But above all this the biggest disappointment has been Dragon Quest IX, a game where you NEED hits in order to be able to do anything other than single player. They could have made it so you could trade and exchange items with friends but you can't even do that while online, it all has to be local multiplayer which is just stupid in this day and age. I mean I want to play with my friend who lives close by in another town, but with everyone working different schedules its impossible for me to find time to actually meet up with him physically. If the game had more online I could just jump online and trade with him, exchange items or whatever, but since Nintendo is retarded about online play I can't do that. Instead if I want to play multiplayer with him I have to drive 40-60 min out of my way one way, battle traffic and burn a bunch of nearly $4 gasoline just to get some items in a game (he doesn't have a car). Oh and the best buy event here, it just didn't happen because the Nintendo rep never showed up, real classy. I did complain to Nintendo about this, at least they gave me a personal response, which is a lot more than most companies would have given me.

I've actually had a lot of luck in the last week or so in getting StreetPass tags. As I've mentioned before, I work retail (primarily in suburban areas) and I seem to be able to get a tag or two every day I go to one of the malls in my district.

I've got 12 people in my Mii Plaza now! I'm making good progress on 2 of the puzzles and I've cleared 4 rooms in "Find Mii". On a related note, I was surprised to see that one of the people I've StreetPassed has collected almost 40 tags. :applause:

I was in NYC for a few hours last night for a show and I got a tag there, too...I was walking from the Chipotle on 34th Street to Rebel on 30th and a Mii popped up.

Bottom line, at least in the areas that I travel: other 3DS users are out there. Don't give up hope!

And the users will only grow so chances will get a lot better.
I like it this feature a lot, and isn't really something that can be replicated online. (i don't mean technically, i mean the experience)

I picked up 4 street tags at Disneyland this past Saturday in only a few hours. I've got 11 so far, I have a few questions though. When you get new tags and you want to get new puzzle pieces or use them for Find Mii, do you have to go there immediately after you get into that channel? I've only been able to do this once and I think that is how I got it to work.

Once you open the Mii Plaza and it introduces your new tags to you, then you MUST do the games.
If you exit, you lose your chance. Same goes if you hire heroes and then exit the app.

I don't understand how someone could get the idea that Streetpass is a replacement for online multiplayer. That's just incorrect. It gets you to carry the system around in order to get little trinkets and chotchkies, digital though they are. It's the same basic thing aheivements and every game on Facebook work on.

Thanks dallow, I figured it was that. I have a habit of going into Mii Plaza and checking out who went in there and then exiting out.

And...and...and...it encourages exercise! Walking is good! Can't allow ourselves to get too fat or we'd never get to see the day 3DS XL...ooh, pun there...or whatever else cool comes out.

*grabs his belly* Ugh...time to walk around the basement some more...
We all know you are just strapping your 3DS to your ceiling fan.
I wish I could take it to work but I don't want it to get ruined.

Totally and utterly untrue! I don't have ceiling fans at my place. \\:D/

That does give me an idea...maybe if I strap my 3DS to a slot car and watch it go loopy...

LMAO!

There are streetpass events being planned out. I'm a part of two streetpass groups on Facebook and I'm hoping to attend an event fairly soon.

I was also disappointed that DQ9 was not online as well, but I ended up having a blast going to all the meet ups for it. I'm sorry your meet up didn't work out.

Dang. I don't see anything I want in there but Zelda...

So for the people out there playing "Find Mii" - I'm stuck on a shielded ghost. Am I understanding correctly that I'm just stuck until i streetpass someone with the right color shirt?

or hire some heroes with coins (back date to reset to zero - work around the 10 coins per day). Chance you will not get the correct colored shirt though. But yeah you need a hero with the same shield color.

I'm sort of confused by why everyone's so excited by this, but I may still buy it since I bizarrely sold my collection disc :whistle2:/

NIS America, Inc.
Cave Story 3D - June 28

Woo hoo! I keep hearing how good this game is, but for some reason they haven't done a real release on it yet. About time, and I didn't know it was coming this soon! This is one of the reasons I went ahead with the 3DS.

Rabbids® Travel in Time – April 10

This'll probably be a buy for me too.

So I guess I've got 2-3 upcoming games I genuinely want!

For the sheild ghost you can also use magic. If you think this is bad wait till you get to spme of the later stage

But do the cat faced hero characters ever have yellow shirts?

I think a lot of people complained about the DQ9 event so perhaps Nintendo will consider doing it differently next time. They do have good customer service. For other events they just send out the carts and employees load them into DS systems and let them run. This works good. But DQ might work different for all I know. I have been to every Pokemon event at Gamestop and TRU since the first one at Toys R Us when they were giving out mew and I had to stand in line for 4 hours to get it and I have never come home without what I came for so Nintendo has a very good track record with events. Toys R Us and Gamestop have never disappointed.

At least I had the common sense to call the store before hand and I found out they were not having the event so I didn't have to drive all the way out there for nothing.

I am trying to get a couple local video game stores to have some events here.

There is one store that hosts a Pokemon battle league for the video games which I was surprised to learn about however its kinda out of my way and the time is bad, but I do plan on going at some point in the future when I can find time.
I'm hoping my StreetPass hits will go up significantly at Comic Con this year ;-)
It will. I got tons at wonder con, and the 3DS came out like a week ago

I got a ton of Dragon Quest maps at Comic Con, so I am sure the 3DS will get a ton of hits!

Any word on that new Shin Megami Tensei DS remake? I am really interested on that one. Either way I am find just having Zelda OOT. I got a bunch of DS games to catch up on. Also hoping that the 3DS's Virtual Console comes out in may.

Although because I want to play Link's Awakening in 3D badly, I have no hopes.

A couple weeks ago while playing with the 3DS camera, I wondered why the shutter noise occurs even with the volume off.

Today I just read an article about how in countries like Japan there are laws/regulations that cell phones must somehow notify when a picture is taken, whether it be sound or lights.

Yea, I first read about it a few years back, when they wanted to do the same in the States. I'd root my phone if it came down to that. It has to do with people taking pictures in secret, like upskirt shots, iirc.
But do the cat faced hero characters ever have yellow shirts?
Yes they do. It took me awhile to get a yellow shirt too (love the brown shirts since they can call a new hero!)....I ended up messing up on my first yellow shirt and used magic instead of sword! whoops...had to wait for another yellow shirt.

I thought about getting something going on a regular basis for DQ, but I ended up not since there were so many events going on in the tampa area. Yea, Nintendo does a fairly good job with there events. I would have to say the best buy one i went to probably was the worst, but that was because only 2 ppl showed up. The employee who was in charge luckily was a DQ fan so that was cool.

Yeah, that was exactly what it was about.

Woot finally got some streetpass notifications.....I was sad I haven't gotten any in a few days so I headed to the Nintendo Office in Redwood Shores, CA and went inside and walked around and got 4! hahaha

I am liking this streetpass thing, I am making it a real life scavenger hunt!

It is a matter of when, not if.

edit below:

So I finally managed to try one of these bad boys out in store. Really nice build, great buttons, the 3D effect clicked right away at full settings on Pilotwings and I was totally fine after playing for 20 minutes. It really was amazing how the 3D enabled me to navigate that much better and see where things were. I think I'm going to end up importing titles until a price drop or hardware revision (new colors?) and then I'll make the plunge. Pretty damn nice toy but I'm just too strapped on cash/time and too backlogged to pick one up just yet. I really can't justify that kind of dough for something I'll only be able to use a few hours a week just yet.

You were able to play on that kiosk for 20 minutes?! I struggled to stay on it for 30 seconds... So uncomfortable at that height.

Also, there is an import lock on 3DS games, so you'll have to import a system as well.

You can pick it up, the demo kiosks are held in place by a magnet.

This reminds me of when I was at Target the other day. I saw some lanky kid bent over way too much in front of the 3DS with his face literally in the screen. Walked by 10 minutes later because I wanted to try out the Pilot Wings demo and he was still bent over like that
You can pick it up, the demo kiosks are held in place by a magnet.
Yeah, I figured that out later. It still doesn't go out enough I'd say. Twenty minutes is still quite a bit though. Even if it was higher, there isn't moving it around much, and my legs would get tired fast.

Yes, yes, I am well aware. This is as perfect a reason as any to refresh my Japanese. If you read my posts at all you'll see that I whine endlessly about Japan getting the good stuff so it's probably best that I just stfu and learn it properly.

For a system that's not supposed to be used by young kids the demo units are awfully close to the ground. Or maybe I'm just too tall? :)
