Nintendo 3DS - General Discussion Thread
I've had mixed results with 3D movies, some work just fine and give me no problems and others give me a bit of a headache.
I find this interesting... I've seen maybe 4 3D movies now and I can tell that some were done far better than others (Avatar/Jackass vs Saw).

My U.S. 3DS review unit unboxing with smooth music. It's a fake unboxing because as I mentioned before, I let Revision3 do the official unboxing for their Unboxing Porn show earlier today. It's also the reason why there are smudges on the screens already. My bad.
Having owned a cat, I get the biggest kick out of your videos because I know it can't be helped and it's unintentionally funny. I imagine at least one of them jumped in the box and layed down as soon as it was shoved off frame and one of them pounced into the packing material as well.
I want one so bad but those colors are fugly so I guess I'm waiting for the xmas bundle
Black is fugly?

Also, I think anyone expecting a bundle or pricedrop before Holiday 2012 is out of their frickin' minds. Nintendo will follow the same business model for this as they did for the Wii and the thing will just sell like hotcakes for at least a year before any sign of dropoff.

After looking back over the launch list, it really makes me sad :(. Still planning to get SSF4, Samurai Warriors, and Pilot Wings. But the fact so many of them dont have Wi-Fi is a bit rediculous. (Namely Ridge Racer)

Not to mention the fact that there seems to be a huge dead season between release and good games finally coming? (Unless the developer's are pulling Ninja releases, theres barely a few between launch and DoA in May)

Either way, 7 days to go!

Maybe they are pushing the software update that is supposed to come in May which is why there are few releases. The software update is supposed to add a lot of features like an internet browser and virtual console service. Maybe they are planning a big push for the VC?

Again that is when the update is supposed to come out, I know better than to trust Nintendo on that after getting burned on the original DS. This really is just like the launch of the original DS we have Ridge Racer, Rayman (I think) and Nintendogs (which didn't actually come out until 9 months after the original DS released). The launch lineup would have been a lot more respectable if it had the promised Kid Icarus and Zelda games. But there isn't even one game on the radar that interests me. The stuff that interests me is Pokemon and RPG games. I fully expect it to take at least 2 years for the 3DS to develop a line of games that I am interested in playing. If this is anything like the launch of the original DS I wouldn't expect good games to start coming until 9 months to a year after the system comes out. By the time the good games started coming out back then the DS Lite was out, a better model at a cheaper price and you could have easily skipped over the original DS without missing anything other than the feeling of getting the latest system on the first day.

The 3D is obviously the big draw here, and since I (likely) won't be using the 3D and I will be turning it off it would feel like I wasn't getting my full money's worth. I REALLY like the idea of the system being able to interact with other systems seamlessly while it is in your purse or bag however we all know this feature will either not be used at all the USA or will be severely underutilized. The chances of me randomly running into another 3DS that is in spotpass mode or that even has it enabled is going to be slim to none.

I got burned on the original DS, not gonna let that happen again, a bunch of games were promised, some that never even came out to this day (still waiting for Egg monster heroes and a Choro Q DS over here). I am not buying until the console gets the feature update and until I actually see a wide plethora of games on the shelves that I want to buy. Not going off promises anymore, because no company keeps their promises.

Possible reasons for not having the e-Shop at launch:
- To discourage trade-ups
- Nintendo is still testing it
- Nintendo is lazy

I know what I think the reason is.

Tried a 3DS and Pilotwings today.

What a total disappointment. The 3D made my left eye switch and it felt very...I don't know. Almost like I was looking through goggles with some water on the lens. With the 3D turned off, it was fine. But gees, I think there are going to be a lot of unhappy buyers.

I'm more excited for the VC Store (Zelda DX) then any of the launch titles. So I'll stick with Star Wars III and Puzzle Bobble until Zelda hits.

But with all the praise, I'm going to pick up Rocket Slime DS as soon as I'm done with Pokemon
Ah, I skipped City Folk intentionally. I was hyped to high hell for it (was ready to buy the keyboard and everything) but when I heard there was nothing new I passed in anticipation of the next handheld iteration. I am glad I waited and avoided 'burn out.'
Smart man.

I'm with Broly on this one.

I am hoping to pick up one before the end of the year. I got the Fat DS, DS Lite, and DSi and I felt they were all worth every penny. Along with the new Rocket Slim I really hope Tales of the Abyss can get a US release.

Mega Man Legends 3
Tales of the Abyss
Zelda OoT
Rocket Slim 3

I know Zelda is coming soon but hopefully I can get the other games within the next 12 months

I was disappointed after testing it at bestbuy but I always wanted a DS system so this is the time to strike can't wait to pick up a nice black one at kmart specially with 25 off any DS/3DS game with purchase.....should be a nice Sunday

Tried Pilotwings out at Best Buy. Impressive that such tech can just be built into the screen, the depth was nice, but not awe inspiring.

Like before, Pilotwings is here to show off the system tech, so the 3D is built in nicely enough and its built using the new portable Mii system.

Consider this the line for decent software, if it doesnt implement 3D, flying or Mii integration as well or better, dont buy it.

The cosmo blue was basically teal, not bad, but not blue. I think I'll keep my black preorder.

The hardware is nice, the analog pad worked rather well and the speakers were rather top notch as I could hear them just fine in Best Buy.

I'm not impressed after trying one at BB. I thought the analog stick was the only impressive thing on it. The 3d effect seemed gimmicky to me

I finally tried to it today. It reminds me of a unibody white macbook.Shiny and fingers prints to drive OCD people nuts. The demo i played had finger prints all over it. Nintendo defintly can't get away from apple's hardware and software design of simple yet feature rich.

I think Kyoto and Cupertino have some tunnel connecting the two.

The analog stick feels amazing and smooth. It would have been nice to play some street fighter with it. The rubber feels like it has a nice grip to it.

I'm still waiting till may to get one though. Since I'll sell my DSi to get it. But it doesn't seem worth it now. I understand there's AR cards and the mii rpg but missing the store is sad. It reminds me of the original iPhone before the app store existed.

I also spent most the time trying to hack into the menu to try the cameras. Of course I couldn't get it working. I'm going to go back and try it again. http://kotaku.com/#!5783176/how-to-access-a-demo-3ds-main-menu
My wife was upset the first thing i did when i got my hands of the device was breaking into something it wasn't meant to do. But I REALLY wanted to try out those damn cameras. ;)

this is why

i suspect that the system itself wasn't meant to be released until summer at the earliest, but they needed something big to push out in march, right before the quarter ends, so they can report a new product and big sales to investors.

as such, many features simply aren't ready yet.

I dont even think the term insta-buy describes what i will do will Rocket Slime 2 comes out. I loved the first one with all of my heart.....picked it up on a whim, and now its one of my favorite DS games

Finally got a chance to check this out at Best Buy today. I was worried that it would make me feel weird or that I wouldn't be wowed by it but I was happily wrong. Once I found the sweet spot on the slider it was amazing. I actually caught myself saying whoa. Too bad there's not a whole lot to Pilot Wings, because it's a great way to show off the system.

I have a really hard time seeing the 3D on the short Best Buy stand. All I saw was blur and didn't really notice any depth but the analog nub felt nice though.

I didn't buy city folk either, because it was exactly the same thing as the other Animal crossing games. They would have to do something really big with Animal crossing to make it worth buying again. Also, a way to stop cheaters and hackers from ruining the economy of the game because that just takes the fun out of it for normal players.

Region locking is disappointing.

This is sad but what would sell me on the system is the original Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow games with wifi instead of link cables, if for some strange reason this actually happened then I am sold. Perhaps if they make a bunch of old GBC or GB games with online play in addition to the Pokemon games I described above then I would definitely be sold. It also has to be online just local multiplayer because I don't have any friends that play here, but I can definitely use the online modes. But as far as that goes other than that I am not interested in rebuying games that I already own since I still have all my original GB/GBC/GBA carts and a beautiful backlit GBA SP to play them on.

I bought two version of Animal Crossing. Thought it was really interesting and original on the Gamecube, but I had my fill after a few months (plus the Gamecube one had NES games, which frankly was at least half the draw IMO).

I think it seems even better suited to a portable, but I just couldn't go through the same thing again on the DS, and I found interface problems I put up with the first time just felt ridiculous the second time.

Plus the use of the second screen was terribly done. (I can't remember if I've ever played a game that used it particularly well, and of all the gimmicks on recent Nintendo systems, a second screen seems the only one that's actually plausibly useful, but at least with Animal Crossing it wasn't used well...)

I adored Animal Crossing on Gamecube and DS. Somehow it felt clunky on Wii, what with motion controls and all.

When the 3DS version comes out, I doubt I'll be able to restrain myself from a day one purchase.

Well, I *loved* City Folk and probably put 80 to 90 hours into it. Go figure. But I hadn't played it extensively on the Gamecube and not at all on DS, so I didn't have that issue. You didn't need to use the motion controls at all, so I'm not sure why that would be an issue. Animal Crossing for 3DS is another game that is likely to push me over the edge. That and Paper Mario. It did irritate me when the hackers came in and started distributing hacked items (including some CAGs), though. I do hope they can put a stop to that in the 3DS version. Probably not, so best to get in early.
Yea the region locking is the most disappointing part of the 3DS. I didn't need to homebrew my ds's at all and some gba game were even region free too.
No kidding. I was seriously considering the JPN unit but my Japanese has rotted so much I really can't justify the drastic expense to just barely stumble through games. Hopefully we see some sort of region-lock workaround within the first couple years of the system's life though it's doubtful given Nintendo's previous comments. Le sigh. Missing out on Layton especially stings given how thin the launch window is. I hope Level 5 makes some kind of announcement on Layton 4/5 shortly after 3DS launch. I was sold on Steel Diver until I started hearing impressions and began to doubt although I may still pick it up just because Pilotwings is so short and I'd like something else to play that's not Nintendogs. I swear that's why they have Olivia Munn pushing it so hard. Now that I'm searching NOA's site I think I might get Samura Warriors just because and trade it in when I'm finished with it.

Also, is it too soon to start speculating on what we'll be seeing from Nintendo later this year? Zelda, Kid Icarus and Star Fox 64 are all featured heavily on the NOA website so my guess is that's what we'll be seeing with a razor thin chance of Animal Crossing making it out this year

I am pretty sure all GBA's and GBA games were region free, that was the beauty of that system, I was able to play UK games on my USA model GBA's and you could even play UK and JP games on a DS or DS Lite.

Animal crossing is the game you only need to play once since all the versions of it that are out are pretty much the same. The DS and Wii have online modes but I doubt anyone uses those anymore and even then you will probably run into nothing but hackers using them. The Gamecube one was good for the NES games and the holidays though! I played the DS one like crazy but like most I burned out quickly after the hackers take over, and while hacking does extend the game a bit that also gets boring quickly. I got the Gamecube one for nearly free so I played that a bit especially since I heard about the NES games.

If Nintendo needs to do anything this generation its stopping the hackers. Pokemon, Animal crossing and Mario Kart were all ruined by hackers. All these games have wonderful online modes that were all ruined by hackers. You won't get far in Pokemon if you don't have supercharged Pokemon that can only be gotten through hacking and you won't get far in Mario kart unless you know how to snake. If you don't hack your currency in Animal Crossing forget it. The only way to get anything off the Pokemon GTS (other than using the deposit mode where you deposit a Pokemon and wait for someone to trade with you) is to clone/hack a ton of legendaries and trade them off to people who want a Darkrai for a Bidoof. They could create a GTS that at least did not allow badly hacked Pokemon to pass through. Nintendo was supposed to create an online system that allowed players of any level to play and enjoy the games but in the end only those with the best hacking skills win and the others do not have a chance. I didn't even buy Mario Kart because with my mediocre skills I would likely not even be able to win one online race.

I played the hell out of the GameCube and Wii Animal Crossing games but skipped the DS one. The Wii one was good, but there wasn't that much of a difference between it and the GameCube one. What was ultimately disappointing was the online, it sucked balls. I think I may have connected a couple of times.

I'm interested in the 3DS one but I'm not jumping up and down for it. As for the region locking, total bullshit. How the fuck am I going to play my Legendary Stafy games now, besides hoping NOA will publish the next one Stateside. Which is a potshot considering how great their publishing efforts have been in the last few years. fucking NOE does a better job and that's damn right pathetic. Oh well, I'll just wait for someone to break the region coding on the portable, much like they did with Wii, and then start importing. I'm not buying a whole another system for some imports, that's just asinine.

man that sucks. Heck im even sad about that too.

I have my 3DS preordered at Target and am wondering if anyone know if they will get enough to cover the preorders. When I asked last week the person working said I should be fine. Just checking if someone knows how reliable target is with preorders?

Thanks for any help

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't Target "preorders" just you buying the $5 card, then showing up with your receipt and getting $5 off the product? I don't think you actually get a reserved item in their system like you do at Gamestop.

That seems completely pointless

I unfortunately was the complete opposite. Went to Best Buy today as I noticed the store a few minutes away had a demo station. I went in expecting to have that "whoa" moment, but it didn't happen. I spent a few minutes on Pilot Wings just trying to adjust the slider to see the 3d. After several minutes, the 3D finally kicked in for me and while it was decent, it didn't really add anything or look THAT good. It actually looked best when playing the demo movie, moving the camera around the island. In game though, the 3D just made playing the game worse/blurry.

My biggest grief is that moving my head not even 1" in either direction makes the screen unseeable. This means no more having someone next to you watching you play. After playing through a few of the practice missions, I walked away and noticed my vision was blurry. Now here I am, 20min later and my vision is still blurry. I can't focus on things like I should be able to. Best way to describe it is that it is like putting on a pair of glasses that aren't prescribed for me. I can definitely see this causing a lot of issues with kids.

I was looking forward to the the 3D, but I am going to have to pass on this system with how badly it has blurred my vision. Maybe I will grab it down the road when it is cheap, but I won't be using the 3d again. :(

Kind of sounds like it may have triggered a migraine, you ever get them?
Kind of sounds like it may have triggered a migraine, you ever get them?
Not really. I do have some back issues that lead to headaches from time to time, but never had a migraine AFAIK. To be fair, I have gotten similar feelings when trying to watch 3D movies, though my vision never blurred this long before. Luckily my vision is all back to normal now. Maybe it was a fluke, not really sure. I may take another shot with the 3D later down the road, but I just don't have the best of luck seeing 3D images without some kind of consequence.

That's sort of what happened to me with Avatar. More than six hours later my vision was still WEIRD. Not blurry in my case, but like...I don't know, SEEING felt wrong and weird. One of the more unpleasant things I've ever experienced, and I was sick of the "3D" effect after about 20 minutes. I can't imagine what would happen if I played a game for 6 hours straight or something :hot:

Tried it at Best Buy today .. 3D was extremely underwhelming and left me with a headache.. immediately cancelled my preorder w/ Amazon.

Ditto. I saw the 3D right away, but I had a headache and eye strain for half an hour after I set it down. Made me feel sick while moving the system around. No thank you, I went from really excited to not interested. Glad they had those demo units.

Excellent. I was going to hold off on games for a while but this is good enough to alleviate that.

I need a 4th game now to go along with Steel Diver, Pilotwings, and SFIV.

Hmm, Rayman 2, or the Ghost Recon game...
Puzzle Bobble is still clearance bin as it's so featureless.

Or I'll skip SFIV. I really only want it to play online.
Getting tired of fighters.

Excellent news! :applause:

I might have to get some Nintendogs to go with my Pilotwings.

I can't believe Toys R Us is going to do a buy 1 get 1 on all games...INCLUDING 3DS games.

I was going to get Nintendogs+Cats. Now I want to get something else and don't know what. Heck, I don't even know all the launch games. I guess I'm thinking of Rayman, Steel Diver, or the Bust-a-Move game. I thought Rayman Raving Rabbids was a launch game, but it doesn't appear to be.
