Nintendo 3DS - General Discussion Thread
I went and got mine today, I really love that thing lol! I been around town today and it seems sold out as far as I am concerned. I guess we'll see sales data here in a bit but it reminds me of the DS launch in some ways. As for the DS games, they are stretched but they don't look bad to me at all. It seems to me the internet is really good about bitching about shit, as usual. I shouldn't have been too worried.

I am curious, I keep reading from here and there that it had really high pre-orders and Nintendo shipped a crapton of systems. But at the same time, depending on location, some places are sold out and others are not. I'm sure within a week they'll be hard to find.
See those that remember or dont. The ds in my area was the same. We got our preorders and went into best buy where a table was set up etc.. it didnt have a big rush etc. Then about a week in it picked up hype and started selling out near me big time.

Today on the 3DS Walmart by us had only one of each color left.

I just hope I can score a NGP this easily come November.
Not to sound like an ass ( I have had 2 psp's) but the PSP never sold out that I recall... it was really dead at launch.
I'm impressed by Nintendo. After them, Sony, and Microsoft made the mistakes of repeatedly producing far too few systems for the release hype, Nintendo made the right move and made more than enough. I know that the 3DS has probably sold 5 million or something since midnight, but they still have plenty to spare. I was at Gamestop picking up some PSN cards (at 4pm), and the guy there said they still have a bunch in stock even after their midnight release. Props Nintendo. Don't make the same mistake as the Wii, PS3, 360, PSP, etc.

Yes, props to Nintendo. If only Apple could have done this with the iPad 2.
The DS definitely started off with slow sales, and that was with a much stronger launch lineup than the 3DS has. I remember buying mine on impulse on release day on the shelf at Toys R Us.
Go google the ds launch lineup. It was terrible.

Apparently 1.6 million 3DS systems were allocated for the NA launch so they're easy to find. Also why pre-orders were so high. No one making money on eBay, heh.

For comparison, Wii had only 500k units for NA launch.

Also, I see iPad 2 mentioned above, I believe they sold 2 million+ opening weekend. Far outselling the 3DS so far at double to triple the price.

Actually Ipad 2 sold 1 million the first weekend, if that. You're numbers are kind of all over the place.

All over the place? I was mistaken about one of them.
A million in NA alone is amazing.
And this weekend just completed the international launch....

I honestly don't see 3DS beating that in the next NPD. It'll be a slow burner I think while the library grows.
Then again, unfair to compare these devices. They're not competing for the same thing.

They must have made the consoles plentiful. I placed my order on Amazon on Friday evening, and it shipped a few minutes ago.

This is quite unlike Nintendo, especially since their deliberate shortages, in my lifetime experience, date back to Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link on NES.

The original DS was sold out here instantly, I barely got one and I learned after that I am never getting a launch system again.

I doubt anyone was buying them here, its the end of the month and no one has any money, but maybe it will get some sales for easter because over here easter is next in line to Christmas for gift giving! Yup people buy their kids consoles for easter here.

As far as shortages I think they learned their lesson with the Wii system. Its tough to predict how many systems you need for launch but I think we can safely say Nintendo blew it with the Wii. On one hand you want just enough out there to cover demand but you don't want it to seem like the system is not popular so you don't want stores overloaded. On the other hand shortages make customers angry as well. Some people will give up or buy an alternative product if the system is too hard to find, and this can lead to lost sales. It would be bad for Nintendo if people bought the iPod touch which is always in stock instead of the 3DS because they couldn't find the 3DS anywhere (just an example). The system isn't launching before Christmas either, so demand is much, much lower. The Wii and original DS both launched right before the holidays which led to insane demand. Methinks Nintendo won't be releasing consoles before the holidays ever again.

I think you can blame plentiful supply and a less than stellar launch line up for a lame launch around here. Just spoke to the manager on duty at ToysRus. He's been there since this morning, and claims they sold a brisk 18 units all day. Now, that's not much to go on, but it hardly screams of 'must have' at the moment.

Heh, I just watched this yesterday that mentioned that very thing.
The whole video shows how little has changed with games overall. :)

Man, John Stossel is such a piece of trash. But I did get both SMB2 and Zelda 2 at launch (and SMB3), so I know I lived a charmed life, at least in my childhood.

So I'm confused: are people upset and bitching because nintendo created too many units for launch? Or cause they think the 3DS isn't selling enough.

I don't see either.
Just seems like a pretty subdued and casual launch. I'm very interested in seeing how it does.
I feel like the average consumer just sees it as a new DS and not the next generation. It may take a bit to change that perception.
So I'm confused: are people upset and bitching because nintendo created too many units for launch? Or cause they think the 3DS isn't selling enough.
The people who are bitching are probably those douchebags who scalp them on ebay. fuck them, I say.
Go google the ds launch lineup. It was terrible.
True, but it also cost much less than this. I was willing to get a launch DS with a lame lineup but I'm not doing so for 3DS at the price it's at.

I don't see people bitching. I see a lot of that in the deals forum. I think we're just noting the differences in this launch and prior ones.

Also, some of us are on the fence about the unit, and were thinking of perhaps buying it if it was not going to be readily available when the other games arrive in the fall.

As it stands, with plenty of units available (just by visual inspection), I think it's safe to wait it out.

Well, I have my nice new 3DS, and no games for it cause they all suck :(

On the other hand, Mario 64 DS with the analog stick is great!

Yeah, as soon as I tried out a DS game with backward compatibility and figured out the analog stick works for them Mario 64 DS popped into my mind as an absolutely perfect game to play on 3DS.

Definitely going to try mario 64 DS again. Wasn't a fan of the thumb strap, should be more playable with the analog stick. Are there any other games that should get a boost from the analog stick?

Yeah, the DS I'd say in it's first YEAR was worse than the 3DS library now, if anything, but the launch was much, much weaker.

Picked up a black 3DS at midnight from Gamestop. There were about 30 people there, although some of them were couples just waiting with one another. The store was up to number 23 in the pre-order pre-processed numbering scheme and still had 7 systems on the shelf so I guess they got 30 units in, unless they had more in the back.

My own initial impressions:
-The battery is definitely an issue, i've been getting roughly 2-1/2 to 3 hours of non-stop gameplay with Ghost Recon with everything turned on and cranked up. This would never last long enough for a flight or while hanging out somewhere.
-I got the 1,000 steps needed to earn 10 coins just from walking around Best Buy for 20 minutes, so there is no real concern about being able to earn coins.
-The 3D effect is worth the purchase to me, it works brilliantly and i've had zero problems with headaches or motion sickness. I've been playing with the 3D slider all the way up and find it gives the best depth and clearest picture for me. I also wear glasses and am nearsighted. After a gaming session my vision is definitely blurred though, I am seeing double currently with the doubled image immediately below what I am focusing on. The same problem happens from long gaming sessions on a console or from reading text online for too long, so it is not unusual, for me at least.
-There are too many screens to go through for the initial setup of the system, I think I spent close to half an hour going through the setup.
-The system is too glossy to use in bright daylight, including when indoors if near a window.
-Steel Diver sucks, it is less of shmup and more of a simulator, you cannot use the analog slider, buttons, and such to control the submarine, it is all controlled by moving sliders and tapping buttons on the touch screen. Very disappointed I spent $40 on it, feels more like it is worth $0.99.
-Ghost Recon is excellent, it's turn based strategy with upgrades. Reminds me of X-Com. The 3D is nice to look at but not crucial to the gameplay.
-The free 3D music video that comes from the system update is impressive but also has a low framerate that ruins the 3D effect at times.
-Oh, one last thing: the stylus sucks. It keeps collapsing when i'm using it, doesn't seem to lock into the extended position. I'm hoping a 3rd party will release a better one that will fit in the built-on holder of the system.

I haven't messed around with the AR stuff yet.

I'm not much of a fighter fan so Street Fighter has no appeal to me, if buying a 3DS I would recommend Ghost Recon as a must-buy for any strategy fan. Stay clear of Steel Diver unless you enjoy tapping touch screens constantly.

I forgot you could play with the touch screen....yikes, that would be horrible.

It played okay with the d-pad though, and I liked the tweaks to the game. Not sure the new stick will help or not, since it'll just be digital.

I really should order a new copy... (Not for the 3DS though...for my DS XL :) )

Arrived at my local GameStop 30 minutes before they opened this morning. NO ONE around. After a few minutes, people started showing up. Guess there were a total of 15-20 people in line when I left. One guy bought the system and 8 games! Could not imagine getting that many games out of this launch lineup. First guy did a little cheer after checking out....everyone groaned loudly. I picked up Street Fighter and was amazed at the 3D. Awesome game, but I never did play much of it on the PS3, so everything's new to me.

Nothing else I wanted. Just waiting on other game announcements. Went to K-Mart tonight. Looked like they hadn't sold a single system. They had a bunch in the game case. Did not have all the games though...no street fighter, pilotwings, or steel diver, so maybe they did some business this morning.

So looking forward to SSFIV, since I never played it on any system. And I suck at fighters so I'm all for the cheating system on the touch pad, heh.

Ghost Recon piques my interest, but I'm also terrible at strategy games (Damn you, Advance Wars, for being so fun but so hard for me...), so I'll wait for a price drop I suppose.

I'm enjoying my 3DS so far but I have a single tiny stuck white pixel on the top screen. It seems like this is a fairly rare occurrence though so I'm debating if I should do an exchange or not. It's going to be kind of hard to even show it to the people at Best Buy (you really need an all dark screen for it to pop out; makes me wonder if more people have stuck pixels but since they're tiny/the 3d kind of "masks" them that they're not as noticeable?) I'm concerned that if I don't return it some game will come along in a few months that makes it just totally obvious.

(I swear, everything I have bought lately has at least 1 stuck pixel in it, not sure what I did to piss off the LCD-gods)

Have to agree Steel Diver is a touch screen fest; glad I did the TrU B1G1-50% with Ridge Racer so at least I can tell myself I only spent $20 on it. Not sure if I'll start enjoying it more as I try to get into it. The periscope mode is pretty cool but not enough to really hold your interest for long.

I'm enjoying Ridge Racer a lot though, good use of 3d. Controls are a little strange even after changing the layout, the 3DS feels a tiny bit cramped for me. (which is odd since the DS never really does) I'll probably get used to it.

Really having fun with the 3D camera and such, even though the quality sucks the concept is pretty cool and I can see doing some interesting things with it.

Overall, I knew I'd want one EVENTUALLY and I figured the earlier I bought the longer before the inevitable price drop (I'd rather buy now than wait til June/July when there'd be a lot of games I want [hopefully....] and have to spend a lot more at once)

Wish I could justify SSFIV since it sounds really good, but I already own the game twice (PS3 and PC) and hardly play it, $40 is a lot to pay just to have a game I rarely play AGAIN...

Now to figure out what to do about the pixel.

Thanks for the impressions pjarvi.

-------

I wouldn't keep it if it one dead pixel anywhere. From impressions, most seem clean though.
I'm more worried about loose hinges, that seems more prevalent.

Were you excited for Steel Diver despite the reviews? I still think I would like it for some reason.
Stuck/dead pixels on this device worry me... could they potentially ruin the 3D effect if in the right spot?
If you had a lot, maybe... the one I have is only noticeable in certain conditions and I think the 3d actually masks it since only 1 eye sees the stuck pixel, the other eye gets a non-stuck pixel.

That said, mine's right in the middle and I'm concerned in either a 2D game or the right 3D setup it'll be an issue.

Can I just copy everything off the SD card and copy it onto the new SD card if I return the system? (to keep my Mii, saves, etc?) Or are things locked to the card so I'd have to make sure to keep the original SD card if I get a new system?
Getting mine on the 30th. You people who have your own already? I hate you. Dallow especially.
Excellent.

I got Street Fighter today because they used a local courier service. Why couldn't they have done that with my 3DS? :(

Would Mario 64 DS be able to benefit from using the analog input? The game was programmed to use digital input for movement and the thumb strap was used for controlling the camera, wasn't it? It's been a while since I've played it and can't remember.

Edit: Nevermind, Wolfpup already brought that up I guess.

Mario 64 DS should have eight way input, so it's more playable now but still not ...as it should be, really. It would be nice if they could drop in a patch to fiWAHHAHAHAHAHHA oh man that was a good one.

What is everyone opinion on the graphic? I tried super street fighter iv at my local gamestop- and through it look real nice and it rival wii's graphic.
I may remember this incorrectly but when the DS launched they were widely available in my area. I bought one day one and when I saw the low demand I thought boy maybe this thing would take off. At that time big N was still saying a true sequel to the GameBoy was coming.
I still like to remember the three pillars. I want to say Nintendo Power even had an article that showed the GBA, Gamecube, and DS on three, separate pillars.
I'm not debating that it's blurrier.. just saying depending on how picky you are it may not bother you at all.
I remember when I had the GBA SP, I would sometimes stretch original GB games and sometimes I would return them to the correct resolution. Just depended on the game. But it was always "fuzzier" if you stretched it. I guess I'll see how I like it when my system comes.
Sheeeeeit.

I knoooow. It's sick how cheap they are on there. I'm tempted to look out for one, but my new 3DS is coming in just a few days.

That's really crappy about the battery. I wonder if there's an accessory I can get that will let me charge another battery to have ready to go? But geez, unscrewing the battery door and popping in a fresh battery so shouldn't happen with a portable system. I may just need to get a couple extra chargers to have around my home. I assume it can charge outside of the dock, yes?

As for Steel Diver, that's so disappointing. I may look into trading to get it so I can check it out, but it sounds like $40 would be a waste.

Same here, I had no intention of buying a 3DS but then checked out the kiosk today and came home and put in my pre-order. :)

I think it's funny. I just did a quick ebay search, and there are 3DSs with like 45 minutes left and not even a single bidder. I hope the people who bought them with hopes of being able to flip it for massive profit feel as stupid as they look.

I agree that Battery Life is an issue. Im only getting 2-3 hours on it full blast.

The AR stuff is pretty cool. mini games pretty much demo how AR will be used and the photo part is pretty neat.

So far so good with the system. I cant be more happier with it.

Should be. They're part of the same generation. On paper we've got (generally speaking):

Dreamcast < Playstation 2/3DS (not really sure which is better) < Playstation Portable < Gamecube < Wii < Xbox 1
I still like to remember the three pillars. I want to say Nintendo Power even had an article that showed the GBA, Gamecube, and DS on three, separate pillars.
I remember that too. I imagine it was a semi-clever way to go "hey, if this flops, don't worry about it, we've got our real next system in the wings".

I still want my GBA2! Maybe it's coming this fall to compete with NGP! :whistle2:D It has no gimmicks either :whistle2:D

I still remember all of the rumors flying shortly before the DS launch that the GBA2 was ready to go and would be compatible with Gamecube games/discs... that probably would've been a pretty cool system.

I really think, even within Nintendo, the massive success of the DS caught everyone off guard...

How is everyone digging their 3DS's? I ordered from Amazon so I'm waiting to order my 2 games since it hasn't shipped yet. I think I'm going to go with SSFIV and PW. What is the next best game over SF in your opinions? I don't have to have it, but I need a couple games to play.

ghost recon's supposed to be good. The lead designer made the x-com games, and a lot of people say it reminds them of x-com.

Ridge Racer has gotten solid reviews too.
