I'm not too upset about the eShop update being delayed. Honestly, any of us who picked a 3DS up between launch and June really sort of knew going into it that it was effectively a 'soft launch' of the system. Looking at the months ahead, it was pretty clear that May/June would be (or should've been) the true launch of the 3DS, with both the eShop functionality and Zelda rearing their heads. Again, anyone who bought a 3DS early should've known what they were getting into, especially if they spent any time on here.
And considering Nintendo had tons of hardware out there, and actually there's quite a bit of software, I'm 100% in support of them launching when they did.
Which, really, is why I find it weird that people are already claiming this system as a failure. It's underperformed, but coming on the heels of the (absolutely runaway) most successful console and handheld of the past few years, even a good-to-great launch would've seemed lacking. Plus, at the end of the day, Nintendo has wiggle room, and they won't let this thing wither on the vine. Worst case scenario, they discontinue the DS and drop the 3DS by $50-100. That's like the nuclear option, but it would effectively take care of the problem.
And they could drop the price to $150 tomorrow if they needed to, without losing money on it. And the DS wasn't that successful until the Lite came out. The PSP was trouncing it for the first year or two. (not that it's ended up doing badly either)
The non-nuclear option? Aggressive marketing campaign alongside Zelda. Commericials and print media that highlight Zelda, other upcoming games (Star Fox, Mario, MGS, RE, Mario Kart), and the eShop.
Hmm, looking at those, I've got to say that's really disappointing. Mario Kart is always kind of the same, and I don't like it that much. Star Fox 64 is a terrible game. Metal Gear Solid 3 was the worst one IMO. Resident Evil isn't actually Resident Evil (although a real one is coming), and could hurt the brand, if anything (along with the lame current gen version too). And Zelda is a not-100% remake of a game surely everyone's played, though at least it is very good
Now the Galaxy Team's upcoming game, the Paper Mario game, the ACTUAL Resident Evil game...that's some exciting stuff!
This push also needs to find a way to make it abundantly clear that these experiences are *only* on the 3DS, because it's a BRAND NEW SYSTEM. In fact, and this is just a personal opinion, I'd actually back away from relying too heavily on touting the 3D capability, since there's simply no way to explain or show it effectively. They do this, I'd imagine the slow sales will begin to pick up a bit.
I totally agree with both of those. I'm amazed people don't understand it's a new system (and unfortunately I've heard people in person being confused by that even with the PS2, the GBA, etc., but this is worse, probably because it's had less hype than most systems, has almost the same name, they've already released three new DS systems that ARE the same system, the boxes look almost the same, and I can sort of understand people just thinking "oh, it's a DS that does a 3D effect".
And since a lot of people (like me) don't WANT "3D", emphasizing that this is a new, more powerful system is important-they should even have SOMEWHERE in advertising that you don't even have to use the "3D".
