Nintendo 3DS - General Discussion Thread
Well, you're half right. I don't see how you could possibly think Adventures is even an average game if you've played it. IGN game it a 9, the reviews are mostly great. WHAT about it is supposedly bad? The idea of calling that a bad game is just bizarre.
I finished the entire game. It was not good - at all. Maybe I hate on it a little more because of the ridiculous review scores of the time and I was expecting more but it was a below average game that tried ripping off Zelda and did it so poorly (horrible characters, horrible level design and utterly forgettable other than the fact of how bad of a game it is).

I still to this day cannot imagine what reviewers were thinking by giving this game anything higher than a 6.5 or 7.0 (still WAY too high, IMO, but more reasonable). Games that are in the B+ to A range should at least be memorable in some way - Starfox Adventures is completely forgettable and there are hundreds, if not thousands of games I'd recommend to others before that game comes up. Awful, awful game.
I'd say it was the 2nd biggest dissapontment on the GC after Wind Waker, what garbage they both were.
See both of these posts are just absurd. You don't like it for some reason, okay. That's unusual, but fine. But to claim Adventures or Wind Waker are "awful", or "garbage" disqualifies you from any serious discussion about games. It's just a flippant, ridiculous claim.

I don't like deathmatch, and I don't like modern sports games, but I'm not going to say Call of Duty's deathmatch or Madden are "garbage" just because of that.

There is a major difference between not liking something specifically and not liking something generally. Of course you aren't going to say CoD's deathmatch or Madden are garbage because you don't know. They do not interest you and you wouldn't be qualified to give an opinion. I don't like strategy games or racing simulations so I have no idea what games are good or bad because I don't play any of them enough to form a rational opinion.

The difference here is that I love action/adventure games and I've played tons and tons of them - I'd rather play a 3rd person action/adventure game more than any other other genre (except maybe 2D action/adventure games) so I know when I play a complete turd and Starfox Adventures practically defines it.

But to me they are. I'd sooner stare at paint. That said, I'm not going to claim they have no value, or that the overwhelming majority of positive reviews are nuts, as is being done by a couple people here.

I wouldn't agree with that as a blanket statement either.

What about it makes you think it's " a complete turd"? Why is it you think you're right, and the overwhelmingly positive reviews are wrong? That's simply a shocking claim you're making.

I pointed out reviews are nuts with my example of Golden Eye. It's pretty much agreed upon that if Golden Eye were reviews today, it'd get maybe a 5/10. Heck, I'd go so far as to say Doom holds up better than Golden Eye, despite being older, and having a much lower rating. Therefore, reviews for Star Fox Adventures also mean very little.

For the record, I played the game during last gen, and we still have a copy of it, but it doesn't make it any less of a turd. It's boring. Also for the record, I wasn't a fan of Daxter either.

This is potentially a good point, except a lot changed between 1997(ish) and 2003. That was a high end Gamecube game...meaning it still looks better than the portables can do, and looks roughly as good as the best Wii games. And while the FPS genre has changed and improved drastically since 97, the "Zelda-ish" genre hasn't seen all that many entries since then, and none that I can think of off the top of my head are on par with Starfox/Wind Waker/Beyond Good and Evil.

WHY specifically is it a "turd"? And what do you mean by Daxter? You mean this game?

Not sure why you brought it up since I don't remember anyone mentioning it, and it's not even the same genre. I don't like it either, though I haven't liked any of the Jak and Daxter games since the original.

When I tried Daxter, it reminded me a lot of Star Fox Adventures. And like SFA, it has relatively good reviews.

Well back last year a ton of gaming review sites gave Nier relative low reviews (68 on metacritic), but many many people found this game to actually be fantastic. Just because reviewers like or dislike something, doesn't mean it's always good or bad.

Huh...well they're not very similar. One's an (IMO bad) 3D platformer. The other's most similar to the Ocarina of Time style Zelda thing, although with influence from Rare's other games too (and of course new stuff). I suppose they're not the furthest possible distance apart two games could be, but other than being 3D and third person perspective, I don't see much similarity.

See, but you also admit to not liking a well-reviewed game, but others can't dislike a different will-reviewed game?

While I've read that, are they saying switching just the sprites or the entire look of the game? I didn't look into it any further.

This also makes me wonder if it has the updated 2D graphics/sound from the Wii/DSiware versions...

This is confusing. I need to sit down.
Metal Gear Solid 3 was the worst one IMO.
Bringing this one back up since it somehow got unnoticed during your rant. Holy cow do you have everything ass backwards, man! MGS3 is though of by most as the best game in the series. Epic, memorable boss fights, great voice work and a story with a really nice twist at the end. All of that plus the stellar gameplay that all MGS games are known for, heck, I'd even say MGS3 had the best gameplay of the series by a mile. I'm quite confused at how you can call it the worst in the series... It's still my favorite game of all-time for crying out loud!

It really doesn't get much better than that.

Well, personal preference, but I think MGS3's gameplay is completely broken. It's basically non-functional, and it's the only game (Besides Portable Ops) I'd say that about.

Hey, you're certainly entitled to your own opinion, but we're going to have to agree to disagree on that one as well. I found MGS3(my entrypoint to the series btw, other than playing a bit less than half of MGS1 when it first came out - as I didn't own it but had a friend that did) much easier to control than MGS2, I had a lot more hiccups with the controls on that game than I did with 3. And, while a great game and groundbreaking at the time, MGS1 is just a mess to deal with at times because of the fixed camera. I found little to no issues with the gameplay of MGS3, and it was both fun and entertaining enough to make me an instant diehard fan of the series. And that's especially saying something as at that time I was not into shooters at all, even if MGS is a different type of shooter. I was almost an exclusive nintendo gamer. MGS3 itself changed the way I gamed(I know that sounds kinda funny ), it opened my eyes up to a whole new genre for me.

Hmm, I'm not sure where I'd rank 1, 2, and 4, as all have pluses and minuses. The extreme difficulty of 5 means I have to rank it lower than the above three (although I still played it for months), and 3 I'd rank well below that.

I was at Target early in the morning to pick up Monster Tale and to my surprise I saw Combat of Giants for $20, anybody that has this game like it? I'm considering beefing up my 3DS library with this one but want some input.
I'm hoping Monster Tale is good :) Bought it a few weeks back. (before losing all my Gamestop cards :( )
If you don't like it you can trade it to me. :D

Well, given the size of my ginormous backlog, this may take a while to even get to it :whistle2:O

Love what it's trying to do, at any rate! :)

3DS Cases to Good Use

I want this to be common practice among 3DS games. I know it didn't come to light on the US release of Nintendogs, although I didn't have any interest in that game (the inner box art was nice though in other regions). Who knows what the plans are for future releases stateside.

That's actually pretty cool and I am glad they are protecting the game still. One major problem I have with these eco friendly dvd and game cases is you are taking out plastic where the disc is, so your leaving parts of the disc not protected by plastic.

Not related to 3DS, but Megaman Legends can't come to the PSN for, I suspect, the same reasons Earthbound won't show up digitally ever.

Thanks, horribly out of date trademark and patent systems!

*sigh* I'd love a remake of Earthbound or even a simple port.

I want some candy. Do you have any candy, utopian? Skittles and/or Nerds? Sometimes I combine those for SUPER AWESOME FLAVOR.

Somebody get Strell an Oompa Loompa...

LOL, :(
Everytime I go to GS or Target I play this... my eyes and stomach are like "LOLOLOLOL". Is it because I don't have full control of the system to set it up appropriately to my face? If not, then :(

Still want one.. but I'll def wait for the inevitable "lighter and seizure proof" 3DS
I noticed Target stores have the Lego SW demo now rather than Pilotwings.
wha..!?! I was at 2 Targets yesterday and still had Pilotwings. I was in a BB though and they had finally put in Steel Diver (man, was that bad, glad I did not pick it up)

I am really considering Lego Pirates b/c it seems like its the best game out (?) I don't want another fighting game in DoA but it does look cool. Not looking like much for me until Kid Icarus..yes, I will pass on Zelda, never got into OoT originally..

My Target doesn't even have a 3DS demo. There aren't any demos in my immediate area, you have to drive 30-45 min to get to one, no wonder the 3DS doesn't appear to be selling over here.

My local best buy had the Nintendo Zone set up... so I downloaded the Nintendo Zone Viewer app to my 3DS. Unfortunately- it doesn't do anything yet. I like having an extra icon on my 3DS though!

I keep hearing Zelda will be released only in limited quantities. If so this is not good, since its the only good game that will be on the 3DS for a while and when its sold out no one will have any incentive to buy the system anymore.

I doubt it'll be that limited. Besides, they have a crapload of 1st party games scheduled to be released this year. We'll find out more exact dates for mario kart, paper mario, animal crossing, star fox 64, kid icarus, and super mario 3ds at or around e3.

"Limited" in Japan, only because they're trying to stop it from showing up in bargain bins and the like.
DOA Dimensions is out today. Anyone get it and care to share their impressions?
It's a great fighter and really shows off the 3D of the system, there are a good amount of different modes and characters, but the online is a bit laggy. There are 999 unlockable figurines if your into that kind of thing which can really extend the replayability of the game. Plus they are giving out a costume a day as dlc for about the next month and they are apparently only going to release each of them twice so if you want them you'll have to get the game sooner, rather then later. If you have ever played any of the Dead or Alive games before it's more of the same so if you liked those I definitely recommend this one.
