Nintendo 3DS - General Discussion Thread

damn it...now i need to choke someone. How about they just replace the left thumbstick so it matches the color of my 3DS. (black)

How about they ditch "3D", boost the screens to 4.3" or bigger, and add a second stick before doing other colors?

Oh well...I love that white one. I would have bought that if it were available, though now I've got those ambassador games stuck on my black one, and if I bought a white one, they'd introduce the above better version 3 months later

Yes, yes, I am apprehensive about a hardware revision. There are a lot of reasons it would be nice if it happened soon and a lot of realistic reasons it won't happen soon. However I am getting rather antsy about having sunk hundreds of dollars into import software, planning on doing more and...not having any machine to play it on. Decisions, decisions, decision.
Apparently a Leaf Green color coming for Luigi's Mansion as well?
Ah yes, I saw that scan. When I saw it at a glance in the GAF thread I thought 'green's not for me' and moved on but when I saw it again later I couldn't help but think it looks an awful lot like an aqua. That mockup with the green slider attachment sure was pretty though.

overall my main concern is just what I end up seeing when I open my 3DS, i honestly wasn't crazy about the gradiant airbrushed texture they tried to add for the black 3DS. While it looks great for the blue and red 3DS, it just didn't care for it much on the black version...I got over it, and i'm enjoying my 3DS experience. While I would have waited for a different color like white or green, I might not have been able to get the deal I got on the system.

so...it was all about timing. I have no regrets. (there's always colored covers and cases)

White 3DS needs to be black on the bottom and white on the top so that it won't get so dirty from your hands, they did it backwards.

Post play survey for Zelda 4 swords is up for me on Club Nintendo.

I've tried playing some of the Monster Hunter games and they're just so boring to me. I might give this one a shot, though, just to see if I like it any better.

Interesting... The gradient looks best on the black version to me, which is actually why I picked the black one.

Tri is the best (easiest, lawl) place to start for a newb to the series. I initially started with MonHan (hated it), skipped G, played MonHan Freedom (HATED IT), and after much prodding played Monhan Freedom Unite. Everything finally clicked and I fell in love with the series although I never did go back and play Monhan, G or Freedom again.

You have to be patient enough to learn the enemy attacks, learn what gear is best in certain situations, how attacks work properly, etc. Great game once you learn everything though.

Tri was my introduction to the series and I expected the game play to be something along the lines of Zelda boss battles.

It is way more rigorous, deliberate, and meticulous. I would say it has a steep learning curve. Changing some weapons is like learning how to play with a different game mechanic. It's a grind it out type of game.

I ended up putting 100 hours into it and I'm reading that amount of time is light.

I would have just preferred glossy black like my DS Lite.

In other news: Not exactly sure what the pokedex update was, basically is the pause button there so you can take pictures of your pokemon mid animation? What else does the pokedex DL do actually besides let you see some new pokemon in 3D and read a bit of info on them? I didn't really see a FAQ or manual in the app itself...though I didn't try very hard due to the somewhat confusing UI.

There are a couple of features you unlock by getting a lot of stickers. The update unlocks them without the sticker requirement.

At least preupdate:
You can DL 3 random Pokemon each day. You can increase your chances of getting a specific one by scanning it's AR code. However, if (like me) you went batshit crazy and scanned all the AR codes right away, it's the equivalent of scanning none because they now all have the same probability again.

Once you've actually DL'd the pokemon, you can scan their AR code for stickers. You get 1 for seeing them pop up from the AR code, and a second for taking their picture (you don't actually need to save the pic).

At certain milestones you unlock additional features (like being able take a picture and save it as a background to photoshop additional AR code pics onto, or being able to take pics of multiple AR pokemon at once).

The thing I hate is that there's a decent number of them that you can only get 1 of (ie, the elemental monkeys, the season deer) and need to find someone to trade with to get the others... which means even though I've "completed" all the DL ones, I'll probably never 100% the damned thing :bomb:

I played the Steam game and wasn't a huge fan, but those kind of platformers are always difficult for me. It would probably control better on 3DS than using the keyboard, though.

I think Monster Hunter would be the kind of game I would like, but I would much rather play it on 3DS than Wii. I'm just more of a handheld or PC gamer. Especially with a big game.
Im on the fence on getting a 3ds. One thing that worries me is the battery life. Anyone got any first hand experience?
There's a rule out there for buying consoles. If there are not 5 games that you want to play released then don't buy that console. That means 5 games that are on store shelves NOT upcoming games or announced games. Simple as that.

I should've taken that advice. I bought the 3DS and the only games I think are fun are Resident Evil Mercenaries and Street Fighter 3d.

I bought Mercenaries, finished it fast, I'm debating on getting Street Fighter. It's $40 on a game I already have on the PS3.

Then there's the fact that the 3DS makes DS games look crappy. What's the deal with that? I'd wait for different 3ds colors to come out, by that time the Mario games should be out too. You're not missing out on on much for not having a 3DS in my opinion.

Also, maybe it's my crappy vision, but I'm not seeing/digging the 3D effect. For the most part I've been playing with the 3D option off.

I bought the 3DS because of the ninja'd trade in that got for it otherwise I'd just have $60 in GS credit laying around...I'm happy with it though so far but my gaming isn't so much these days, 3DS is more for commuting now. It's starting to pay for itself already as I'm not renting portable DVD players for flights, no more magazines or newspapers either.

imo if you take more advantage of the street pass feature you might enjoy certain games more, SFIV might be one of them but of course you'd actually have to be in a community that uses street pass w/this game too.

as for the 3D effect, if you don't hold the 3DS at a certain distance and/or move your head or the 3DS too much the 3D effect will be unpleasant or just not work for you. I don't play with the 3D effect much mainly to conserve battery life but I do turn it up for cut scenes when it applies and some aspects of certain games just for the fun of it.

I don't have a handheld, The only thing i got is the iPhone 4 but honestly i just can't get into games on the phone.
Those first two are probably the best the system has to offer thus far, and they're definitely the definitive versions to own. I was watching my brother play OoT on the 64 last week and was shocked at just how much better my 3DS copy looks. I knew it looked better, but it's really almost like a night/day comparison.

To answer your question previous question, it's a much better console that others like to let on. It's got a lot of neat features and I use mine nearly every day. As for the batter issues, yes, it's not a great battery. But, mine does give me 5 good hours of playtime before the red battery light comes on. If you play mostly at home(in bed) like me, that's a non-issue. I whip it out on my lunch break, take it with me on the weekends, and I've yet to have it actually die on me as I can usually keep it charged every night. All of that being said(I'm definitely pro-3DS), it's not the greatest pickup if you aren't into Nintendo first-party titles. You'll get your use out of Star Fox & Zelda(the e-shop has a decent amount of good games as well, if you're into that sort of thing), but you need to make sure that you're interested in the other upcoming games before you make a decision.

**EDIT**

Noticed what you said about iPhone games, I'm not so big into those either but I love my 3DS.

Lito, I recommend, aside from the games you're looking to pick up, Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars. It's just like the ol' X-Com games and is a good turn based tactical strategy game from Ubisoft.

I'm not a big fighting fan so I don't think I'll get SSFIV but I'm still planning on nabbing Star Fox 64 3D some time.

Thats one of the reasons why i wanted a 3DS. I miss a lot of the first party titles of nintendo but don't really care for the Wii and the motion stuff. i just like to chill and play games. The iPhone 4 games i just couldn't get into. As for the upcoming games, I am very interested. Mario land and all that. Its been awhile since ive played a Mario game. Battery life seems pretty good.

For some reason im excited about the street pass and stuff that gives you coins when you walk around. Seems neat.
don't forget to DL the free Zelda swords game from the eshop.
Yeah i was looking at that. Looks great.

That's probably one of the cooler features they started off with. You'll get through all of that stuff within the first month or so, but there are plans to update it(in November, I think) - so hopefully they'll continue the support of that feature throughout it's lifetime. Even then, it's pretty cool to get new tags and that's one of the reasons I bring my 3DS with me everywhere.

I've been forgetting to do that on my DSi and DSi Xl, I've been contemplating if I should open up my Mario DSi Xl to get it on that system too.

I just read through the last few pages. ='(@ the stories, I feel for all of you! That White 3DS looks so awesome the MH3 one loos even better, too bad the systems are region locked. I need to get myself some sort of man purse too, I usually just stick my 3DS in one of my pockets. I use the 3DS Pull & Go Folio, I think it's pretty convenient so I don't have to lug everything around.

@skiizim - your link is broken. why would you keep you not open your Mario DSi XL? you plan on selling it or something? also, unless you decide to play locally with friends there doesn't seem to be much reason to DL to all your DS' as you won't be able to migrate your saves...and after beating maybe once or twice, I don't know if there's reason to play it again and again across 3 devices. (unless of course the game is just so ass kicking or an endless puzzle type game)

The link seems fine, Amazon was having issues. No I don't plan on selling it, I just haven't opened it since I already have a DSi XL. I purchased the system since I got it on clearance at Target for a good price and it would also sit nice in my collection.

I just ordered my Flame Red 3DS (Used/Acceptable condition) from Amazon warehouse deals, do you CAGs know if it comes with the original box and items when you purchase from Amazon Warehouse deals? I am just wondering got mine for $130 as self-birthday gift. I am probably going with Starfox643D as my first 3DS game purchase I have a Japanese copy of the game for my N64.

There's a decent chance it will come with everything, but there's no guarantee. Good luck with finding Street Pass hits in Bakersfield. The only place where I can consistently get hits is at the GameStop over by East Hills, but it's always the same person (Emily). I got a hit from the display model at the Target over there, but it has only happened once for some reason.

Finished Round 2 of Find Mii. I'll never have to play it again. Now I just have to finish the 2 puzzles I have (Bowser / SMG2) before I'll have an influx of Play Coins. Hopefully I'll get some new Puzzles by then.

Also got a Four Swords Anniversary Notification.

I just got my Flame Red 3DS today it was brand new with box and everything and I noticed I got charged only 117$ for the system. I have set up everything already and have the four swords game. I am going to probably take advantage of toys r us buy 2 get 1 free sale to get some 3DS games. I am just playing Final Fantasy III on it right now and since I wasn't part of the DS generation I notice the backwards compatibility is okay for what it is.

Wasn't a part of the DS generation? You've got a huge list of great games to get into!

Hopefully there will be decent games available for the sale. I was just over there two days ago and half of the video game selection was gone because they seem to be rearranging everything. Half of the Wii/DS section was replaced with clothes and useless accessories and almost all of the clearance racks were gone.

Picked up the 3DS Elite Transporter Case on clearance at Wamart for 10.00. It looks like it normally sells for 25.00, and plus it is a boss case. Id offer to pick up some cases for CAGs but I think the shipping would probably be prohibitively expensive, unless I could jam it in a giant bubble mailer and it is 13 oz for first class mail.
They also had the Flex case skin thing for 6.00, but it looked a little odd so I passed on it

I'm going to pick up my first 3DS games: Im getting the ghost recon tactical game, super monkey ball 3d and picking up the DS version of sonic & sega all stars racing. Hopefully the Bakersfield Toys R Us has it. ZombieToast thanks for the heads up.
ZombieToast thanks for the heads up.
No problem. I don't usually see people on here from this area, so I like to keep an eye out for any fellow unfortunate Bakersfieldians. Heh. By the way, I'm pretty sure TRU does not have Sega & Sonic Racing for DS (I only see it for 360 and Wii), but maybe you'll luck out. Random DS games tend to show up now and then; I just found a copy of Again there a couple of weeks ago, which I never expected. If you can't find the racing game, they usually have Picross 3D, which can easily last you 100 hours or more.
