I think Retro's working on the next Zelda title. After the Press event, G4 had Reggie on and basically gave the indication that Retro had the chance to do Other M, but wanted to do something else and are. What do we see today? Not Zelda, but a franchise formerly in Retro's hands. Somebody swapped places.

I'm not much of a Wii gamer, but after watching E3. I enjoyed Nintendo the most because they didn't talk on, and on like the others did, and they had the most exclusives I'm interested in which I never thought they would. I think Mario Brothers,Mario Galaxy 2, and that Metroid game will be must haves for me anyway. Also want the Resident Evil they mentioned, and Dead Space.

I remember that IGN mentioned that rumor in one of their podcasts. We know that Retro is working on a secret project (Supposedly, it was planned for GDC, but cancelled at the last minute), so I'd imagine that Retro would be working on one of three things:
A) That "Space Pirate side-story" thing.
B) Kid Icarus (After Factor 5 went kaput, it's tough to imagine anyone else working on it)
C) The aforementioned Zelda title.

Now seeing this video and lots of single player action I'm very, very excited for this. Maybe it was having four mediocre players during he PC turned me off. It is now looking like it will be as fun as NSMB: DS

On top of that SNOWBALLS!!

Endless Ocean 2 (Doomed will be ecstatic)
 I am. Looks like I am going to need to update my Endless Ocean themed Backloggery (link in sig) and change my avatar.

With the increased quality of third party games and now the increased amount of first party core games, I can't see the Wii has no games argument being taken seriously ever except by the horde of sad console warriors on various message boards such as this.

Though Microsoft still wins because of Perfect Dark on XBLA. :bouncy:

I have to admit, the trailers on youtube make all the games look a little more interesting than how it first came out in the presser.

It still surreal to see Metroid Gaiden, as much as that appeals to me, though.

Watching the video of NSMBWii makes me want it a lot more than the presser gave indication.

Penguin suit, bitches. Penguin suit.

I'll be picking up a DSi this summer for sure but a Wii is going to have to wait until next year. DQX is the main draw for me but it looks like there will be enough titles for me to hold onto my Wii this time around.

Pretty good conference by Nintendo this year, infinitely better than last year's. I give it a 4/5.
I wonder if you can do single player with any character? :whistle2:k
NSMB? Yeah, they said that 1-4 players can play it.

My list is starting to get ridiculous. Plus there's backlog I've really got to work on, such as the first two Mario & Luigi games - I've got them but haven't played them yet!
So I could start a 1 player game just Toad?
I hope so, I also hope that everyone has their own attributes (like SMB2) and you can only get certain hidden exits with certain characters.

I agree, if they showed that clip during their talking I would have been much much more pleased. That clip makes the game look awesome.

The demo didn't show nearly enough, but I still thought it looked great. It wasn't *that* bad. Or perhaps I just had faith in the concept, which made me not think the demo so bad. :)

Whatever, I can't wait for the game. I'm more excited about it then SMG2, though also looking forward to that, of course. I've just always prefered 2D platformers.

You, Me, and the Cubes . . . and the PHALLUS.

I wish they didn't make it so easy. Looks like a pretty good game though.
I'm looking everywhere to see when Miyamoto's round table is going. Is it going to be on G4? Streamed anywhere? What the hell?
IGN is liveblogging it in 10 minutes.

Reactions to the conference/releases:
-NSMB looks great, but the likely lack of online means it's probably a pass unless my wife miraculously expresses interest.
-SMG2 is a surprise, but really not something I was looking forward to. Not to say it won't be good, but it isn't really needed right now.
-Metroid looks refreshingly new, looking forward to more info on how it will play.
-Hopefully Golden Sun DS is more entertaining for me than the GBA games.
-Monado might make up for the lack of Soma Bringer localization (but yay the less exciting Glory of Heracles).

Played NSMB Wii for a little bit. I think all of the characters play the same because it auto assigned all of the characters. I kept dying because of the random people I was playing with so I was immediately turned off. Once someone swallowed me with their Yoshi and jumped in a hole killing us both. I was instantly reminded why my Wii hasn't been turned on in over a year. Another time I was repeatedly jumped on making it impossible for me to avoid a Goomba.

Because the people you always play with want to have fun?
Because you find ways to convince yourself the Wii sucks like so many other people instead of giving the system a fair chance?

This post instantly reminded me why the anti-Wii crowd are without a doubt the most pathetic group in gaming today. Doesn't matter what's on the Wii. They find a way to shit on it and then call OTHER people fanboys. Congrats.

Well I hope your friends aren't asses, problem solved.

That Yoshi thing I used to do it in Smash Brothers if someone pissed me off. :)

From IGN's liveblog:
"7:03 p.m.: Shows new illustration for the next Zelda for Wii. Nothing to show yet, but it shows an adult link. More grown up than ever before.
7:04 p.m.: "We'd like to make it compatible with Wii MotionPlus. It's quite possible it will be playable only with Wii MotionPlus."
7:05 p.m.: "Think of Zelda while you're trying some of the archery and sword play in Wii Sports Resort," Miyamoto say.
7:05 p.m.: "There are people who think of Zelda more as an RPG with simpler controls, so trying to figure out how to make everybody happy is something that's going to concern me," says Miyamoto.

Kotaku (From the bottom-up):
8:04 It depends on how well motion plus does
8:04 It shows link and a female in blue in a robe. It's a painting. He wants to annonce it next year. And I should be motion plus compatible. Maybe only wii motion plus
8:03 He did bring the main illustration foe next zelda title
8:02 I wanted to annonce a zelda game for wii

I post my personal opinion and you attack me. I'm not the one with issues.

Why are you so defensive? I bought a Wii on launch day even though I was travelling on vacation. I enjoyed Raving Rabbids, Wii Sports, Excite Truck, Zelda and SMG. But after that I was kind of over it. I have Wii Sports Resort preordered as well as Toy Story Mania, so it's not like I've completely written off the Wii. There just haven't been any games that I'm interested in.

I was excited to see NSMB Wii and actually took the time to play the game. I didn't like it. The reasons I didn't like it are very similar to reasons I don't like other Wii titles (i.e. crap like blue shells and crappy waggle controls). It's not like the Wii is the only system with titles like that. I hated You're in the Movies for the similar reasons.

If I want a casual fun games most Wii games don't do it for me. Pokemon Snap on virtual console works. Rock Band/Guitar Hero work. The copy of Hakuna Matata I imported because Nintendo won't release a Pokemon Snap 2 also works. Practically any 360 FPS with the difficulty cranked down to easy works as well.

"You're in the Movies" has something similar to "crap like blue shells and crappy waggle controls"? I had no idea! ;^)

It just seems like a silly complaint to me - you were playing with strangers (for what, 10 minutes? 20 minutes?) who apparently wanted to play it like it was Smash Bros. When playing the game with friends/family it will be fun. Lego Star Wars also lets you attack your partner and there are times when that can result in hilarity, but a friend would know when to stop being an ass, though of course first pushing it to its limits. :) In Lego Star Wars there isn't anything to even compete for, where as here there is. Once you have beaten the game you can then go back to favorite levels and compete in them, which is going to increase the longevity of the game. If you really don't like the idea you can just play it single player, ala classic Mario platformer style.

What the multiplayer, when people are playing it to compete, reminds me of is the 2-player mini-game in New Super Mario Bros. (DS) which I think is really fun. In the Wii game you can compete like that in any level in the game. That's awesome. Mind you, I would like it to have levels specifically designed for competitive play - I don't know if it has that, but I presume not since it wasn't mentioned.

Span Smasher sounds like it could be fun. Too bad there's no video yet, but I like the concept. It sounds, from the description, like you use the Wii MotionPlus enhanced remote to hit "Smasher" (a ball) toward objects. Here's the description:

Introducing a New Spherical Smash-Hit Hero
Span Smasher combines the hands-on fun of tennis with the nonstop action and instant
gratification of pinball. Smasher (name not final) is a floating ball with a lot of personality.
When his island paradise is threatened, Smasher springs into action. He bounces around
and smashes into barriers, aided by the motions of players and their Wii Remote™
controllers. Players use just one hand to swat him toward the objects they want him to
smash, and he does the rest.

FEATURES:
• Players who finish each section with three coins will receive a pearl. With three pearls, players can move on
to the boss stage of that particular level.
• During the game, Smasher and his friend take on different abilities and characteristics that change the way
they look and act to keep the challenge fresh. For instance, they might become huge, split into multiple balls
or turn to metal.
• The scenery of the game scrolls to present Smasher with new obstacles and rewards. Players must angle
their swings to help Smasher bust through barriers or collect keys to unlock the next segment of the game.
• Smasher can hang back at the edge of the screen to power up for an even bigger burst of energy. But if he
remains motionless too long, he might get eaten by the multi-headed dragon that pursues him.
• Span Smasher is used with the new Wii MotionPlus™ accessory, which adds even greater precision to
players’ swings.

You bat a smiling, sentient tangerine through walls of blocks. Seriously.

Span Smasher is one of the Big N's surprise showing here at E3 2009, a game we didn't really know anything about in advance of the show -- but, after having spend a while with it here on the show floor, we can tell you pretty much everything. It's all summed up in that intro sentence up there -- Span Smasher is a game where you play as a bouncing piece of fruit, and you use the Wii Remote to swipe, slap and knock him around the screen and blast through barriers built of breakable blocks.

This is a Wii MotionPlus-only game, developed by Artoon and set to be published by Nintendo sometime in the to-be-announced future. But however long the wait is, it might be worth it -- this little design is simple, but can get addictive.

One swipe of the Remote gets your character, The Smasher, rolling. He'll hit a barrier, break it, and then bounce back the opposite way -- ricocheting off the wall in a manner similar to arcade classic Arkanoid. You'll then swipe at him again, sending him at another block, to break it. Rinse and repeat.

You can swipe at The Smasher multiple times in a row if you want, course-correcting him in mid-flight to send him soaring around unbreakable obstacles. You don't want to constantly waggle the Wiimote, though, because waiting a few seconds in-between swipes allows him to power-up -- glowing with white, fruity rage. Then your next swipe will be super-powered, able to break through multiple blocks at a time without bounce back.

Also, the stage constantly scrolls. So you've got to move fast.

The E3 demo on display here on the show floor offered up three full levels and a boss battle. The levels were pretty snazzy, including some pinball-like slides that sent the Smasher spinning around the screen, keys you had to grab to unlock doors, multiple paths to progress and collectible items galore. Grabbing fruit pieces activated power-ups, like a Multi Ball and Fire Ball mode that each lasted 15 seconds or so before fading away. There were also special medals to collect along the way, and those determined your overall success in each stage -- grab three, and you passed the level. Grab less than three, and you failed.

The boss was a big, bad blowfish unrelated to Hootie and the band. His attacks were pretty visually impressive, as he puffs himself up with air and then exhaled a wave of flying blocks meant to impede you. You've just got to power through, though, and wail on that whale. Eventually, he deflates and dies. Game over, demo complete.

Overall, Span Smasher was a fun surprise here at the show, and really just a good example of the kinds of MotionPlus projects Nintendo has in mind to launch through the rest of 2009 and into next year. Span Smasher won't be your most anticipated title over the span of time between now and its release, but once you finally get your hands on it yourself you'll have a good amount of fun.

And really, you can't beat a game where the main character is, literally, a fruit.

I'm always fine with a new Mario, Metroid & Zelda but they've already had the limelight on the Wii. Where's F-Zero, Waverace, Pikmin, Starfox and the rumored Kid Icarus?
I wonder why Nintendo has forgotten all about Star Fox? :whistle2:k
....even Kirby.
The funny thing is I could totally see Nintendo taking Span Smasher and rebranding it Kirby Smash 'n Roll or something.

I then foresee a brand new "nintendo whores out its characters" thread.

:whistle2:k It's so obvious . . . why isn't this happening?

thanks for this, the cursed mountain stuff was especially interesting since the trailer is lukewarm, but the art and screenshots are promising.

too bad super meat boy is q1 2010

Ooooh... I was just dreaming... MotionPlus Kirby's Dream Course (not a remake, a new game built around MotionPlus). That would be AWESOME. Pretty please? If they do it they'd better include the original as an unlockable, though.

Totally agree that we need more of the other characters now, and how about someone new? Oh, and Muscle March. We've got to get Muscle March. But we won't. Sigh. Still, I can't complain about the lineup.

I never thought I'd post in a Wii thread, but NSMBW is the first game that has me seriously wishing I owned a Wii. I sunk a ton of time into the DS one and it really took me back, the prospect of finally being able to play classic 2d Mario platforming with friends is very tempting. That, along with a few other older titles, actually have me considering the little white box of satan for the first time :D

The creator of Star Fox is wary of a new, "proper" game. He even commented how it unsettling it was of his fanbase (furries) to do certain things with the characters.

I'm serious.

How about Donkey Kong Country 4? I'd expect them to continue the series, probably on the DS, but to this point there's been no indication that it'll ever happen.

This is what you do to the characters, let them fly a fucking ship, that's it! No damn lame ground levels just ship flying!

Well according to the last few Nintendo financial reports they have a Kirby Wii game in development, but it seems to be taking a very long time for some reason.
