Nintendo E3 2011 Press Conference - Wii U, Luigi's Mansion 2, Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS
Looks like a 360 phat and PS3 slim had intercourse.

I'm not sure I wanted a Wii HD, I'm sure most of us wanted something entirely new but they couldnt really abandon all the Wii's success. They also carry over the let downs but the name still has value to the casual market. The control idea is interesting but form factor is questionable. Reminds me of those leap frog kids learning toys.

I'm just hoping their online system is on par with XBL. If I feel like I'm playing a whole new system with it I'm sold. The UI needs a whole new feel, not a DS to DSi to 3DS same but different feel.
what exactly could they have done to be entirely new?

the wii tablet looks a little bulky to me. I thought I saw a little bar on the underside (like a built in stand) that looks like it's gonna get in the way for stuff.
Yeah, I don't understand Nintendo's deal with proprietary software format. N64 had carts and lost to PSX. Gamecube had mini DVDs and lost to PS2/Xbox. You can debate about Wii vs. PS3/360, but they've really limited the potential of games because of the medium.

Wouldn't surprise me if they actually are losing more money in the long-run by making decisions such as these to fight piracy than if they were just to use the standard format (blu-ray in this case).
That's doubtful. Blu-Ray is an expensive format to manufacture. Just ask Sony who has lost millions on it.

A Wii disc hold as much data as a Xbox 360 DVD

Welcome to this generation of gaming, Nintendo!

I wrote off Nintendo (i.e. Wii) a while back since mine has since dusted over. But this looks to bring me back. Seeing the 3rd party developers coming back i.e. Tekken, Ninja Gaiden, etc, is icing on the cake. The golf demo looked really neat; I assume EA will copy the approach for Tiger Woods. Can't wait until next year when they actually showcase titles.

Nintendo hands down slaughtered both Microsoft and Sony's press conferences. Granted, it was pretty much a given.

I can't wait to hear more...
They showed the controller but what does the actual system look like? Just another Wii with a better inside?
How far away can I get with it? Another room in the house?
How long does the battery last on the controller?
Price? It looks pricey.

Wow. Just wow.
no. the vita is at a excellent price point and if sony support for their devices is any indication, you would be safe with Vita.
I don't necessarily mean a price break as a good deal. If they have something similar to the amazon deal for the 3DS, which was like buy the 3DS get, $25 off a game and some free accessories (which weren't really worth much tbh.)

They initially took a dip on ps3 but blu ray? Where's your info? Enlighten me.

As far as bulky, the Ipad sells well for being a little bulky, which hasn't stopped millions of people for buying one.

But as far as the new, you are right, nothing more couldn't have been done new. The same can go for the other systems as well.

ummmm.... yeah they pretty much did. unless you were asleep, then you get a pass.

Mmm, you should ask yourself whether you'd really want to play those titles on the Wii U or the PS3 or 360 then re-think that post.

ipad is sleek and flat though. there's some awkward looking stuff on the wiitablet.

they better make like a gun-like holding accessory. How the hell are kids gonna be able to hold the tablet and launch throwing stars at the screen like in the demo.

EA sports titles for sure on it. Hardcore type titles I would have to see how it feels as a true controller.

If it comes at $399 it will be a intial tough sell. Nintendo prices for the mass market. $299, same as the Wii came in at a few years ago. Controllers will be pricey I think. Will bet on $70. $299 and this thing will be the next thing that will be the biggest sought after item like the Wii was.
I don't know about "slaughtered".
I watched all 3. Just coming from excitement and energy and not content, Nintendo slaughtered both of them. Nintendo's was the only conference that didn't put me to sleep. Sony's and Microsoft were constant borefests.

$400 is a no go for pretty much everyone. I'm thinking the same thing. $300 + $70 controllers. Or a WiiUSports controller+game bundle for $70.

Don't say that, the iPad is a prime example of charging out of their ass and look how well that sells.

The responses in this thread are precisely why they should not have gone HD. Going a full generation above PS360 was always a complete impossibilty. Nintendo doesnt lose money on hardware, meaning you'd be looking an entirely unpalatable price range. Matching PS360 doesnt draw users away from them, and may not draw significantly from Wii only owners because of price. You're now left having spent money on power for basically no reason.

New inputs are always welcome though.

No one slaughtered anyone this E3. EVERYONE was mediocre at the very best during their press conferences this year.

yeah but the ipad is one of those sexy products people buy as status accessories.

If they didn't go HD in this generation, even I'd have rioted.

What a mess. It's sad to see the once mighty Nintendo perpetually sink. Instead of coming up with something ahead of the curve, they have spun-out in the curve, and have started driving backwards.

when the PS4 and Xbox720 come out with display screens on their controllers, what tune will you be singing?

Are they wearing seat belts? Do they have airbags or anti-lock brakes? This driving metaphor is some compelling shit, you can't leave us hanging here. FINISH THE METAPHOR.

They needed to go HD. I am not a graphics guy, I could care less but when I play Sonic Heroes on my HDTV it's like damn this game looks terrible on my TV.

I think the other reason I like this console is it's not doing the norm. Sure there is a good chance it will not be as powerful as the PS4/720 but in all seriousness the PS4/720 are consoles that will be no where compared to the PC. This seems to offer an experience I can't find anywhere else.
They initially took a dip on ps3 but blu ray? Where's your info? Enlighten me.
Sony did more than take a little "dip" when developing the PS3. It's common knowledge the amount of R&D they put into the console -- and Blu-Ray was one of the key reasons -- is why financially it's taken them so long to recover this generation.

There are a lot of stories out there but this one from this week even mentions it:

Sony's PS3 was pretty slow out of the gate with its $599 price tag, but Sony had little choice in terms of pricing due to the heavy costs surrounding Blu-ray and the Cell processor. The R&D and manufacturing took its toll on the company's bottom line and only now is the PlayStation division finally reaping some profits.

Nintendo is never going to appeal to some with their direction. Not sure they care, they pretty much follow their own muse. Seems to have served them well so far.

i'm fairly sure that with those great graphics, third party developers, and truly amazing features, they blew anything thhat sony and ms were think otu of the water.

haters gonna hate though.

i really think they need to release a basic controller for it though, something like the classic controller pro. i know that that brick will have my hands acing if i'm trying to go for an all night ssb marathon.

but i'm so excited. just the few games they had listed in development are enough to tell that nintendo is back. i'm just afraid it's not really a console, but a controller. i mean, nintendo never did say "console." anyways, i'm fucking stoked.

as for the 3ds, it coudn't have gone better. i am now officially in love, and it will be my next console purchase. so many great titles, but i'm especially excited for luigi's mansion 2. i really think nintendo won this year.
when the PS4 and Xbox720 come out with display screens on their controllers, what tune will you be singing?
It's not the touchscreen that bothers me. The size of the controller, the slight step away from motion control (which they introduced), "current-gen" (soon to be last-gen) graphics. These are the issues plaguing this monster before it lives. I'm all for touchscreen controls... and tablet-esque gaming. But this thing is coming out in 2012, and it's really not introducing us to anything "new." Sure... the ability to take a game from screen to controller is neat, but it's been done before (see the limited accessibility of the PSP to PS3 titles). It has a niche... but it just doesn't have that "next big thing in gaming" vibe.

Also, isn't it rumored that the next gen of PlayStation and Xbox is coming in (or around) 2014? So it's possible that just two years after the Wii U launch, the world will be introduced to a more technically impressive pair of consoles. Thus making the Wii U inferior in almost every way.

EDIT: I was once a major Nintendo fan-boy. I refused to buy any other console unless it had Nintendo on it. This was the case from 1985 to 1997... which is when I broke my own rule and purchased a PlayStation. Following the Nintendo 64, Nintendo started to lose it's edge. Instead of evolving with current trends in gaming, it went way outside of the box. The Wii was a successful console. However, it's certainly not because of it's library littered with shovel-ware. Instead, it was a success because of what it is... motion gaming. What new genre of gaming are they introducing us to with the Wii U?

I've gotta wonder why these threads always degrade into a S vs N vs MS bashdown. They all have their place, they all make a crap ton of cash, and a good chunk of us own and like all their consoles, past and present. They all have strengths, they all have weaknesses.

Go play games. There are more than enough Internet pissing contests already, and none of them have a winner yet.

I'm confused with all this confusion. Nintendo basically fixed all the issues with the Wii while adding a second screen. Though the final verdict depends on how it's implemented, it's still underwhelming in content revealed today. The 3DS stole the show in terms of content. Now we just need to wait a little more for it. Just a little more....

Also, I don't believe the controller will be all that pricey since it's not an HD screen and it uses resistive touchscreen tech.

Reggie on gametrailers a few mins ago (I'm behind): "the reason 3rd party developers said they couldn't come to Wii was because of the lack of horsepower. That excuse is now gone. All of the best content from 3rd party developers can come to the machine."

He also said the system doesn't launch until 2012 so the game line-up is a long, long ways off.

I can understand people wondering what the deal is in terms of how its implemented, but obviously we'll find that out in 2012. Launch line up, price, all of that -- there's really no need to go into that now when the system is 18 months off.

All the conferences were crap.

I liked seeing the types of games I like at MS, especially excited for Halo 4.

I liked seeing the Vita in action and it came in at a price point I would actually pay for.

I liked the Zelda orchestra at the beginning.

Nothing great from anyone.
Don't say that, the iPad is a prime example of charging out of their ass and look how well that sells.
Nintendo is not Apple, that is not a valid comparison. Apple makes computer products that appeal to just about everyone. Nintendo makes video games that appeal to people who play video games.

This is really sad nintendo, wii u? really? enjoy about 7-8 decent first party games, then a shitload of shovelware. I don't think nintendo will ever get third party support for this POS.

Why doesn't Nintendo just piss off Microsoft by calling it the Wii 360? Or to have an improved sensor bar that is similar to the Kinect but without the cameras?

So what is the BC on the gamecube/wii games?

I think Nintendo had the best conference this year, but not by much.

I can't see why people are getting excited for a console that is 5 years late to this generation and will be "last gen" technology in a few years.

I love me some HD Nintendo but no way in hell did they "slaughter" this years E3.

I'm actually not sure what the shovelware developers are going to do. With 2 $250 handhelds and 3 HD consoles, there is no longer a cheap physical media development option.
