ummmmm..........uhhhhhh...........yup

Getting the list ready for tommorow. Less than 30 sales, and about half of them with "toy" listings (what we hone in on). I'll probably just cut the list down to my town, and then randomly drive around the old fashion way instead.

I still regret passing up those 4 NES games for 2 bucks last week (especially since Stack-Up and Gyro go for a decent amount on ebay, not that i'd sell them). Got too greedy...

But we still have more than 2 months left to hunt, so I'm sure we'll find other things. We learn something new every week, so we're more prepared every time we go out.

Any CAGs who've never been out before, if the weather's nice then you should try waking up early for tommorow. It can be worth the effort, and then you have the rest of the day to nap and brag about your finds.

Except you MA CAGs, you stay in bed! ;)

i went last week and found games places you wouldnt think, 2 genis games for 1, at a place that had mostly clothes and junk. i started realizing your best bet for finding older systyms is to look for people in there 30's they tend to just want to get rid of them. got nes and genis from that type of couple for 5, i was happy as hell, going in two weeks again, cuz was fun and good exercise, plus found good deals

Score! Well it looks like my lucky day. I just bought 3 boxes of games and systems. I need to burrow through it more to follow

Maybe I should start getting up earlier... hit up about 10, only score was a Mario Kart 64 guide for a quarter. One had an old ps1 and a couple ps2 games that they wanted 5 each for so I didn't bother asking. I'm beginning to think my town just isn't good for video games.

1 Genesis 2 (1 controller, no hookups)
Paid: $2

1 "Change the System" N64 Promo VHS
1 "Star Fox 64" TRU N64 Promo VHS
Paid: $1

1 Pokemon Yellow Adventure Book
1 Duncan "How to Yo-Yo" VHS
Paid: 50 cents

1 Surf Ninjas (GameGear, cart only)
1 Super Smash T.V. (GameGear, cart only)
1 Jeopardy Sports Edition (GameGear, cart only)
1 Chakan (GameGear, cart only)
1 Power Rangers The Movie (GameGear, cart only)
1 Devilish (GameGear, cart only)
Paid: $2

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Went back to the place where we saw a dirty 32X and dirty Genesis again, and found 6 dirty N64 games, and a dirty Gameboy case with 4 games in it. I offered $5, to which she answered $20. I then looked at the stuff I had, and said "Well, maybe if they were a little cleaner...How about $10?" She shook her head no, and said that she would do $15. fuck you bitch. If you think I'm gonna pay $20 for 6 dirt-encrusted N64 games and a crusty Gameboy case, you got another thing coming. This is TWICE that she has rebuffed a fair offer from me. That bitch really chapps my ass.

Saw an old woman selling her grandson's SNES (1 controller, RF hookups), and a complete Super Metroid (box in rough shape) for $20. She wouldn't seperate the package, and she would only go as low as $18. Yeah, suck my balls. She also rudely declined my offer of 25 cents for a Fat Albert VHS marked 75 cents. This was the same yardsale that was charging $2 for assorted VHS tapes (half of which were taped off of TV). I hate people sometimes.

Ah well. Kind of a quiet week for yardsales for some reason. Not that many listed in the paper, and not many around. Most of the stuff we found was at sales that weren't advertised in the paper.

I saw these boxes laying on the ground at a yard sale. The first thing that caught my eye in box 1 was the top loader and super C and DW 3 sitting on top wires controllers etc. Box 2 had the 2600 and sealed MK 2. Box 3 had the NES and more wires. There were quite a few people and immediately motioned to the guy how much for everything. Instantly he replies $70. I'm thinking he's gonna be firm (mind you I do not know what else is in the boxes) I figure what the hell let me try. Can you do better? I exclaim. He says gimme $50. I'm ready to start rummaging through the boxesto see if I'm gonna get my $50 worth and think to myself, "snotknocker you thought he would be firm on $70 and you were wrong, now you're thinking he won't do better then $50, am I wrong again?. fuck it offer him $30" So I tell him alls I got in my budget is $30 - he nods yes waves his hand in the air to take it. I scoff the shit up like the flash toss it in my car and head home. I'mreally quite pleased right now

I headed out agian today but it was pretty hot. I decided to come home and and am now totally sucked into Batman for the NES from my score yesterday. I forgot just how much I loved playing this game. (It's been like 15 years). Any way i tested everything from my score yesterday and it all works fine except for the top loader which is fucked. Someone opened it up and messed around with it and it's just totally fucked. any way I still made out like a bandit

GJ snot that's an awesome deal.

Evilmax if the surf ninjas game is anything like the one in the movie I'll buy it off you.
How fucked is fucked? I'm just curious cause I've always wanted to try my hand at console repair.
screws to the board are missing and the connector pins look like somebody did a norman bates on em. They are quite mangled. The screws on the bottom of the console are all missing and the holes are stripped. It was actually held together with that blue gummy shit. The guts are pretty much in tact. I'm gonna keep it for parts. I've actually repaired a few consoles myself and will probably repair a few more in the future. This is the first time though I've come across a TL in my bargain hunting and would really like to get a functioning one for my collection.

Wow snot that is amazing! Can you guys who seem to get lots of ggod scores put together a few tips for us yard sale noobs? I tried two weeks ago (got up real early on Sat and everything, which was tough) but I didn't even find a single garage sale with games, much less a good deal.

-Definately do Saturday, with optional Sunday or Friday (if you don't work or go to school). Saturday is the main day though.

-Find websites for all of the news papers in your area (or get the papers themselves). Compile a list of yardsales-of-interest.

-More on the above point: Look for buzzwords like "Toys", "Games", and "Multi-Family" to help your chances. Alot of the time you'll see multi-family or community yardsales, which are a bunch of sales in one location.

-After you compile your list (anywhere from 20-40 sales), go to mapquest or yahoo maps and get directions from place to place. Plan out a route for the day.

-If you don't like the list method, then you can try driving around your surrounding towns looking for signs and sales. Try to stay in suburban areas (they usually have the best stuff).

-Expect to be out from 8-1 ish.

-Never just "drive by". Most of the time, games are in boxes and aren't visible from the car.

-Try to get somebody to go with you, so you can have a driver and a navigator.

-Always have a bunch of 1's, some 5's, a bunch of quarters, and a checkbook (if you find a huge score).

-Never give up. Most of the time you'll find shit at 38/40 sales and gold at 2/40. You never know what you'll find and when you'll find it, it's 100% random with no rhyme or reason.

-Always Haggle, and always give an offer (the worst they can say is "no"). Also keep in mind what you would be willing to pay, and don't be too frugal.

-Always have the money to pay for your stuff with you. If you say "I'll come back and pay later", you could lose the sale!

-If something isn't marked, don't make the first offer. I picture the guy interested in the Intellivision taking the box up to the people and saying "Would you take $20 for this?", unaware that they were only asking $10. Always ask them what they want before you offer them anything!

-It doesn't hurt to be visibly nice when walking up to a sale. You never know if they'll have anything, and people are less willing to cut you a deal if they don't like you.

-examine your items carefully before purchase - most cart games tend to need a serious cleaning

-If items do not have a price and you have to ask how much and the person hesitates with a response - just blurt out I'll give you a dollar or whatever.

-multpile item purchases tend to get bigger discounts

-always look in boxes - even boxes that look like they might not contain games and stuff.

-If you don't see any games or games stuff, always ask "Do you have any videogames" For whatever strange reason you tend to see a lot of spaghetti strainers and pie plates while the real goods are left inside. I think the majority of these sales are put together by women, and most of them don't even thing about busting out hubbies old video games

-Some people are insanely unreasonable and really believe some one will buy 10 yard fight for $5

-Some people are extremely knowledgable on the value of their stuff and will be fair but not stupid

-Some people will price things so reasonably you may just want to pay tha asking price because it really is a bargain

-Some people are stupid and really want to get rid of those old boxes of games etc. The thought of making $20 or $30 on a box of stuff or multiple items appeals to them much more then " will you take a quarter on this salt shaker?" (these are the kind of people I like)

-Remember the deals are out there and more often then not you need to be patient. You may not score anything one week but score multiple items the next

well like i said in my find on the sealed xbox live starter kit. I just paid the 20 and had him throw in a comp headset before his kid came back. when i was gonna buy it anyway ill take a 70(kit) + 10(headset) for 20 any day.

I dont live in the traditional suburb. I live in a condo, not the building type condos, but the type of condos that are ina big community, and are in little sections all attached. It's like the type you see old people living in Florida, only not as luxurious looking on the outside. Anyways, since the condo council or whatever the hell it is that makes decisions are so annoying, they made an attempt to ban all dogs from the place after my friends little brother was "attacked" totally and completely unprovoked (apparently). Anyways, my point is is that they banned garage sales, either way if we did have them, since it's a gated community, noone would really come. Ive seen some advertisments around other places, but I can't even imagine 20+ garage sales going on close together in the same day...

All of these are good suggestions and I'll add a few more.

Thanks guys! I think I need to get a paper, mark sales, and plan a route. I just drove around randomly last time b/c the area I live in has so many sales. Still it felt frustrating that way, not knowing where the next one would be.

Also, it seems like a huge percentage of the sales in this area sell their good stuff on Friday :( Oh, well.

i still stand by my one tip, look at the age of the people doing the yard sale, everytime i have scored a deal, the couples are in late 20's and early 30's, for more of the older systems, i might be wrong but has worked for me, the guy i bought sega and nes from said he had games in a box somewhere, so i gave him my number and said when he found them give me a call, it cant hurt anything, so dont be shy to ask if they have anygames if you find just the systems.

another tip i agree works good is somebody to go with you, in my case i go with one of my best friends and he looks while i drive, he likes games as much as i do so that helps also, as a matter of fact he made a joke about seing a snes on a table, and i scored the nes a nd genises at that sale

The only thing that makes me mad about all this is that I don't have a car. So my yard sailing is limited to how far I can get on a bike or begging the mommers ;)

I made some so-so finds this weekend

GBA - $5 (scratched screen)
GBA + some Spyro GBA Game + junky Connect 4 hand held - $10
All in one joystick plug-n-play games - $1 each Spongebob + the one with Ms. Pac-Man, but Spongebob doesn't work
Zelda Majora's Mask N64 (complete) - $2
Star Wars Rogue Squadron N64 (complete + NP guide) $2.50
Zelda Ocarina of Time Versus Guidebook - $0.50

Passed on an official Ocarina guidebook at another house for a quarter when I noticed it was missing a half dozen pages from the middle (it was in very rough shape besides).

few other random non-gaming odds and ends. So now I've picked up 3 GBAs at yard sales for a total of $30 :) I see probably at least 3 or 4 Game Boy carrying cases every week, but it's a little rare to actually see somebody selling their GBA itself. Though I see more GBA systems than I do GBA games. I think people hang onto them since all of the new systems will still play them.

Wow, sales on early Thursday? Wild.
Wow, sales on early Thursday? Wild.
It's the norm round these parts. About 65-75% of garage sales start on Thursday, most of the rest on Friday, and a small amount are Saturday only. If you want to get to the sales before anyone else does, you gotta do it on Thursday. I've kinda wondered how common it is around the country though, especially with your (very handy) saling hints talking about Saturday being the best day.

Yeah, the sales are all just Sat morning here in VA. Well I shouldn't say all, I'll see ads in the paper for ones that run multiple days but those are much less than 10% of the total. And church sales will often run multiple days ending on Saturday (since there is church on Sunday).

You guys are very lucky - they start on Fri here so all the good stuff is gone by the time I can get to one on Sat. I might try going to work a little late and hitting some sales up next Fri though.
Your Yoshi's Island deal still doesnt beat my GR deal on the game: $.99

Oops, forgot to mention that it was complete, the box and manual are a little beat up, but still servicable.

Very interesting, I wonder why it's so different here. I'd always thought of garage sales as a Saturday thing too until I started looking into them more seriously recently.

Well, I have a few to goto tomorrow...Hopefully I'll find something videogame related...hopefully.... The reccomendations above are great, make sure to always bring 1's, 5's, and quarters!

I am hitting one tomorrow, they listed a full sized arcade pinball machine in the listing. if the price is right I may be buying it. I will post pics if I do

Well I'm on the hunt again. I really hope i don't find any more NES or Genesis systems in my travels. I've got like 4 or 5 of each, they seem to be abundant this year and so fucking cheap. I'm gonna have to start using these as trade fodder. Anyways good luck today fellow cheapasses

Good luck guys, I'm heading out too. Also off to GR to take advantage of the t3g1 and EB to the PSX/N64 deal. Good luck to all!

Bunch of neat stories today.

We mapped out 10 key Yardsales ("Toys", "Games", "Multi-Family") and hit those, then drove around looking for signs for the rest of the day.

Saw volumes 1-5 of the Dinosaurs TV show (some of them still sealed), but they were asking $2 a tape. No way Jose. They also had a Captain Planet tape. I find the typical $1-for-VHS-tape-standard a tad offensive, but $2 a tape is just lunacy.

When we bought the NES lot, I got in the car with the crate in my lap. Just as I shut the door, a guy not much older than me and (presumably) his girlfriend got out of their car, saw the NES stuff in my lap, smiled and pointed at it and went "Awwwwwwwww!". We were all kind of laughing about it. It's funny to see your competition in person, and to beat them out on a find by a few seconds is exhilirating. There were no negative feelings from them it seemed, and it was almost as if we connected in the few seconds that we saw each other. We were both out for the same thing, and almost felt a sense of camaraderie.

The lady who we got the GB Box from also had a mint boxed NES, with a boxed Mario 2 (box was a little torn). She also had a mint boxed Game Gear, with mint boxed power adapter and mint boxed screen magnifyer. She wanted $20 for the NES + Mario, and $15 for the GG stuff. Far too pricey for me, although it was neat to see all that stuff mint and boxed. She was typical of the "YardSale Bitches" that we've seen, who charge ebay prices for their stuff. Short hair, slightly old, acted snobby. She was all "where's the gameboy, where's the gameboy" when I asked if we could buy the box, and I thought she was going to accuse us of stealing it but she didn't. I offered 50 cents for the box early, and then she was looking at it and said "alright, you can have it" *pause*......and I thought she was going to be nice and let us have the box for free, but she wanted my 50 cent offer.

Saw a St. Bernard dog today. Those things are like horses!

Saw a dirty old Game Boy with Teris+MarioLand for $10. Har har har. If it was mint I could semi-understand, but the stuff was dirty and tossed in a bin.

Not a bad day for our 10th outing. We bought stuff at 5/28 sales, which is a surprisingly good average for us.

Good luck all!

Ok, I went and hit up about 20 or so Yardsales...and didnt get a whole lot.

Ok, so like I said, I hit around 20 sales. Most turned up nothing but junk. I asked one lady if she has any videogame stuff and she said she didn't for sale, but her husband has all the old ones (She names of Vectrex, Colecovision, Atari). Bummer.

First sale I hit where I actually buy something is the Gameboy Pocket with 3 games. I asked the kid how much he wanted, hesitated, so I offered him $5. Score. He also had a few PS1 Sports games...but I passed.

Directly after him, I hit another one a few blocks up. This sales had a bunch of boxes GB games (all the Pokemon and Zeldas), and 2 GBA games. Mario Pinball (pretty new) and Donkey Kong Country 2. He wanted $5 for Mario, and $10 for DKC2. I grabbed Mario ($10 is a bit too much considering I have it on SNES)

Towards the end, I stumpled on a yard sales out in the ghetto. Kid had a stack of PS2 and Dreamcast ganes. He wanted $15 for each PS2 game (all 2001 sports, and a Star Wars Bounty Hunter and State of Emergency.). I passed on those, and went through his DC pile. All sports, except Sonic Shuffle, and Centipde (not pictured, rolled under my seat, argg). $1 each, not too bad.

Hit up some thrift stores, and managed to find the 3 Gaming magazines for $.10 each. Next thrift turned up the 3 Genesis games for $1 each...

Well, pretty shitty....except...

Thank you JESUS! Seriously. I managed to find a Church having a 'raise money for wheelchairs' sale, and rummaged through everything I could see. I saw the 3D0 stashed in the corner, and ran over to grab it. Ive never actually seen a 3D0 in person. Pretty big, nicley built. $5 for it! Came with 2 controllers, built in AC, but no AV cords (no biggie, it uses generic). I went over to another room they had, and found the stack of 3D0 games. Another $5 and I was on my way! I tested it and it works great, and as always with CD based machines, another game was inside (Olympic something). If anyone is interested in buying it PM me, as I don't have room for this system.

Total spent...about $25.

So, out of 20 yard sales, I scored 3 things. I did pass on a few things (NBA Jam 32x, some PS2 sports games, Dreamcast for $20), but overall, the 3D0 score was awesome.

Weird Notes:
Man walking his Chicken with a lease.
Fat ugly women
Really hot girls who gave me their phone number and felt the need to show me what thong they were wearing (I kid you not!)

Do you guys think it's worth it to go to sales on Sunday?

I only get the paper Saturday and Sunday, and just thought of going yard saling at around 11 pm last night... all the Friday papers were already gone out of the box =/
