Official 2008 Yard Sale Thread

This week was a good week for me. I hit approx 45 sales Thursday, 25 Friday, and 9 Saturday. There actually weren't any today. At every sale I asked for video games and named off specific systems like Nintendo, sega, playstation.

My weekend started in tragedy when I arrived at a sale (with a PS2 advertised) 30 minutes early and found out it had already been sold. The bad: I was best friends with this guy's younger brother in grade school and he told me he would have given me the PS2 for free. Worse: His wife used to work for Midway and would always get free games. The worst: He told me he had between 80-90 PS1 games that he sold to the guy literally 3 minutes before I got there.

My luck did turn around when I found this Genesis complete and extra controller for $5, offered $3 and she took it.

I also found T2 on game gear with the case. Wanted $1, countered with .25 SOLD

This was in a free box! Yay bonus!

I also picked up some CED disks for .50 each. Making of thriller, Clash of the titans, First Blood, Star wars, Empire Strikes Back, Warriors, Alien, and a couple of others. See wiki for more info http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitance_Electronic_Disc

Went to a sale with a lot of high priced games. Guy wanted $10, offered $7. It was worth it for the guide alone, but a black label complete game with registration card is nice too.

I got lucky at this sale when I asked about games and the guy's wife said "We have a sega with the CD cases." He said "oh yeah, I forgot we bought that for the grandkids, let me go get it." He came back with the dreamcast and 2 controllers, and the games. I noticed the component cord was missing and I asked if he had it. He came back out with the cord and the boxes for the system. He said make an offer and I said "How does $10 sound?" He said I was thinking more like $25. I then offered $12 and he said "Well I think we paid over $200 for this stuff when it came out, plus we haven't put it out yet...I think for $12 we would keep it and put $50 on it and see if someone wants it". After he said that I knew he was in control of the negotiation. I asked if he had anything else that went with the system and his wife came out with the manual and the registration cards. He said "this is practically brand new, I think they only played with it a few times" (which must have been true because there was no hand gunk on the controllers/system) I then offered $15 and the wife chimed in with "I won't let you sell it for less than $20!" That is when I regained control. I got a lower price offer than he gave me and the husband was now upset with his wife telling him what to do.

Now here is when noticing your surroundings comes in handy. I have a guy who is being forced to sell his Harley (I asked him about it when I got to the sale), who is now upset with his wife. I came in with my final offer..."$17 is the highest I can go. He looked at his wife and said "OK". She then looked at me and said "$17 is what we settled on?" I said yes and handed her a $20 :whistle2:\"

And now my best find in a long time...

I asked this MILF at a sale if she had any old video games and at first she said "No". I said "Ok thank you" and started to leave and she said "Wait! I have a Turbo Grafix!" I stopped and said "I might be interested in it" and asked if I could take a look at it, she said "let me go inside and I'll be right back." She came out with everything and I said "what would you like for it?" She said "I think you have to start bartering with me" and smiled at me. I said "I don't know...$5?", she said "how about $10?", countered "How about $7?", she said "Sounds good!" I realized today that the rf adapter is missing, but I might swing by tomorrow and see if she has it or anything else for me ;) haha.

List of games: Splatterhouse, Raiden, Klax, Final lap twin, cadash, night creatures, jj and jeff, moto roader, dungeon explorer, bloody wolf, king of casino, tv sports football, hockey, keith courage in alpha zones, and the official Turbo Grafx 16 game holder. Oh, the hotspot in the pic is "alone in the dark" (1992 PC version from INFOGRAMES) that I paid .10 for at another sale.

I left my number with 3 others, but I haven't heard anything yet.

Here's my only find from last week:
ys1.jpg

Eternal Champions - Complete
Mario 2 - Cart Only
1943 - Cart Only
Castle of Dragon - Cart Only
Asked $5, offered $3, accepted $4.

And my only find this week:
ys2.jpg

Mickey Mousecapade - Complete
Wally Bear and the NO! Gang - No Instructions
Ducktales - Complete
Tarzan - Complete
Asked $1 each, I took it since they were almost all complete and in good condition

My NES library is growing nicely...but still no NES, I'm finding lots of Gennys and PS1s, but no NESes.

I also have a question for the more experienced.
How do you deal with really busy sales where either you can't even figure out who's running it or the seller has a line of people waiting to check out?
Do you have a Player for the CED's?"
I do not have a player, but you can order parts from a guy in Portland. Check out this site for everything CED: http://www.cedmagic.com/selectavision.html Usually they go for $60 shipped on ebay at the lowest (for a working one), but they occasionally pop up at a lower price. I would set up a favorite search and have it emailed daily.
Slowdive: I believe you can use a standard NES rf with the TG16
Thanks! That is true, but I would like to have a 'turbotuner', because I am a completest. I know, I am a loser.
I also have a question for the more experienced.
How do you deal with really busy sales where either you can't even figure out who's running it or the seller has a line of people waiting to check out?
Busy sales are the best for CIF. Take out what you would like to offer and say something to the effect of "Hey! Who wants my money?" "Or who is in charge here?" (Make sure you are smiling) Most likely the person running the sale will identify themselves. You then make your offer with the cash in hand. If they are busy they will spend less time thinking about it and usually will take an offer.

Here is what I usually offer based on price.
Price:Offer

$1 Item: .50
$2: $1
$5: $3
$10: $7

**These are for items I really want, if it is something I do not care about, then I offer less. Also buying in bulk is always the best bet. You have plenty of time to count the items and to figure out an offer. When the person running the sale has to do the math they usually give up or agree to an offer.

EXAMPLE: I saw 9 old pennants (from late 60s early 70s). The lady wanted $2 each -Except for the LA Rams and another older one "That would cost more"- I said "how much for all of them?" She said $10, I said "How about $5? and she took it.

Not the cheapest deals on earth....but a guy had a 60 GB PS3 for 400 dollars. So i went home that night and sold my 80 GB ps3 for 400 dollars and went over to his place and grabbed the system. I didnt know it included 3 six axis controllers and motorstorm and call of duty 4, so he gave them to me. I went to GC and traded in the controllers for 17 each and got a dual shock 3. Works fo me...
My cousins are like that.
They're all home schooled and can't have any fun because they have to study the bible so much.
They can't wait to come to my house. lol

Back on topic, no sales for me this week.
I'm going to a concert with Metallica, chiodos, SOAD without the singer and some other bands for a radio station. ^_^
KROQ Weenie Roast? That's a long drive for you if that's the case...

BTW some guy is trying to sell a cart only cop of Earthbound for $60, but "will take $45". Should I say forget it, or try to get it for (hopefully a lot) less? I'm just wondering whether to respond with "OMG $45 for a Super Nintendo game" and play ignorant, or to pull the old "cart only isn't worth anything" argument.

Take it..would you rather pay double on ebay?

Is there a list of rares for super nintendo? I dont even look at any nintendo games if someone wants more than $3 each for them. I probably passed this one up twice and didn't even know it. Is there a website or a book? I know atari has a book, but I am not sure if any other systems have a price guide.

Wow, do you really have no clue of the better Super Nintendo games? Were you born in like 1997, or one of those dirty Sega fans? XD

Valuable games are:

Chrono Trigger
Earthbound
Secret of Mana
Final Fantasy III
Super Mario Allstars
Lufia
Mario RPG
many more but I'm in a hurry

Pretty much any RPG.

Nope, I am one of those old guys who actually played the games the first time around, so to me they were all readily available. I only played Nintendo systems until they dishonored SONY, now I only play SONY systems.

That reminds me...My friend's dad was one of the artists on super mario world and they had a SN that was a Japanese prototype. I wonder if he still has it. I think he had to return it to Japan as part of his contract. I remember we didn't play it much because the dialog was in Japanese. F-zero was easier to play without reading text. I think the buttons on the controller were a different color too. I think they were red, yellow, green, and blue buttons.

I doubt it was a "prototype"...you just described a Super Famicom (the Japanese equivalent of Super Nintendo). And yeah, the buttons are the colors seen in my avatar.

Prototype was etched in it. He only had 2 or 3 games. F-Zero, Super Mario World and some other one? It also had a plack (labeled prototype) that if you removed it, the sytem would not function anymore. I am 99% sure it looked like a US snes, but had Japanese text. It was not either of the Famicom designs, but the controller did look like famicom. I do not think the controller had the L and R buttons either. He had it because he was involved as a freelance artist for some part of super mario world. I am going to email him and ask about it and see if he can fill me in on his dad's involvement.

Super Mario All-Stars + World is more rare than the regular all-stars but both are redily availabe, but go for about $25 -$35 on ebay.

Super Mario Kart goes for abou $20-$25

Ogre battle is a rare that i havent foudn yet, although i have found several copies of the N64 version(all complete).

I'm not sure but i think Kirby all-stars is a rare.

Turtles IV: Turtles in Time, and Contra III: The Alien Wars arent rare but sell for about $15-$25.

I found 2 RPGs called New Horizons that I thought were lame but sold for $20 apiece.

There are more but im not sure what they are.

Not sure where to put this, but since this is where I spend most of my posting time, here goes. I may have hit some of you up for a copy of Pikmin 2 in the past, with a story about how it was for my daughter. Well, as I posted I eventually found a copy at a local game store (at a CAG price no less). When I gave it to her she was really excited, so much so that she wanted to make a Pikmin costume. Of course, this had to be the weekend that her usual costume maker (mom) was out of town. So, dad had to do, what dad had to do. Not much to it, but here is the result.

:whistle2:#

Good job, but, uh, you sure did go with white for that. Um, was that really, the best choice?

I mean, I was at this gaming con in the south, and a lot of people had that exact same costume:

Good call. Hopefully the flower at the top off the head piece will disabuse anyone of ill intentions. She wanted to be a different color, but kind of tough to find red, blue, yellow, or purple long sleeve shirts and sweat pants on the cusp of summertime. Should've checked Goodwill. Might've found some games there while I was at it!

Woops. My bad then!
Sound pretty cool. I'd be interested in seeing some pics if you could scrounge up any.

Somewhat back on topic, there aren't really any yard sales over here in Japan (partially because most people don't have YARDS! ), but there are resale/recycle stores EVERYWHERE.

I decided to take a slight detour while driving home yesterday and I found 2 amazing game stores.
At the first one I got:

-SD F1 Grand Prix (cart only) for Super Famicom for 200 yen (A pretty cool Mario Kart clone I'd been looking for)
-An "untested" Famicom Disk System with the original manuals and a BOXED AC Adapter for 980 yen
-3 boxed Famicom Disk games (SMB 2, F1 Race ft. Mario, and Ninteno Volleyball) for 100 yen each

First off, even though the Disk System wasn't guaranteed to work, it was a STEAL because of the AC Adapter. Those things ALONE usually go for about $40-50 on eBay.
I hooked up the system to my Generation NEX (awesome NES/Famicom clone console) and the FDS "insert disk" screen loaded up perfectly but upon trying to load a game I found out the drive belt needed to be replaced. I successfully did that last night but I need to futz with the motor because it still won't load disks (I get an error message). Gotta track down an allen wrench first, haha.

I almost didn't stop in the 2nd store because it looked so small and dingy, but I'm SO glad I did. They had stacks of all different kinds of games piled up along one wall and after some digging I found:

-UFO Kamen Yakisoban (CIB) for Super Famicom
-R2: Rendering Ranger (cart only) for Super Famicom

R2: Rendering Ranger is one of the rarest SF games out there and I was ASTOUNDED when I found it among all the usual crappy soccer/mahjong games. Nothing in the store had price tags so I took them up to the clerk (who looked really relieved that I could speak Japanese  ) and asked how much they were.
He said UFO was 480 yen (nice!! saw it at another store for $150!) and R2 was.....wait for it.......280 yen (!!!!!) and then asked "IS THAT PRICE OK?"
I said "YES!!!!", paid for the games with the change and walked to my car high on life. :D

A boxed copy of R2 sold on eBay a few days ago for FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS.
I paid about $2.60 for my cart only copy.

Life is good. :D
Whats the conversion rate from yen to US dollars?
1 yen approximately = 0.009 USD

I finaly opend a pic hosting site so i can show what i get :) to test my mad uploading skills i will show what i got for $18.99 at the pawnshops today!!

It couldn't have been that, they hand them out with our drivers license, and it says on the back it must be in your vehicle at all times. I mean gun racks are handed out in drivers ed.
What was the warning for...Driving without a firearm? :twoguns:

Ya, I'm from adams county and I forgot about that law down there in Grant county. lol. No i was going 10 over, and the cop got me but I think i only got a warning because i was actualy going slower than the other cars on the road/was the only car that stopped, so he let me off easy.

Good classic haul today!

for $5 I got::
2 x NES System, with 1 power cord and 1 video cord
4 x NES Controllers
Dr. Mario
Yo! Noid
Yoshi's Cookie
Abadox
Baseball
Startropics
Winter Games
River City Ransom
Kirby's Adventure

I also got some Star Wars figures from the original ep. 1 release and 1998 release for $1 apiece!

Didn't we just go over that a couple pages ago?

Also, Yoshi's Cookie is magnificent. SNES version is the best, but all the versions are a lot of fun.
Wow, those are some great NES games!

But...a yard sale on a Thursday?
Not again...I have to put in more details now:

The traditional first day for garage/yard sales was Thursday. In recent years, the first day for sales tends to be Friday for a multiple day sale and Saturday for a 1 day sale. I think the change is because more households are either single parent households or 2 working parent households. Back in the day housewives (possibly some househusbands) had them and (arguably) had more time on their hands. They would conduct the sale while the children were at school, because the weekends were reserved for family time, coca-cola, and apple pie.

Yeah, around my town they almost all start on thursdays, but i also have tomorrow off so i'll see if anything new pops up

In my city, about half of all sales start on Thursday, but stuff rarely sells, and people usually want a high price because they still have two days to sell it for the price they want. Friday is almost always better, and you usually get first picks that day.

In my town all the old people and house wifes sell stuff but no one goes. sadly alot fo games get taken on fridays, I love saturday only sales because most people in my town don't get up untill 9 so I am on eof the first people to show up to the sales.

there's a promising sale tomorrow that says 'dvds, cds, games' however they forgot to put a time that it starts and i have to work at 10. i'm just going to try to get there at 8:30 and pray that it starts at 9 or that nobody took the good stuff.

isn't that annoying though? a good looking garage sale and they forget a SERIOUSLY important detail?

no.. show up at 8 AM .. even if it doesn't start until 9.. its better than it starting at 8 and missing out on everything.

I would show up at 8, and if it isnt open yet knock on the door and say sorry to bother you but I saw in the paper that you are haveing a Garage sale today, and was interested in the Games and DVD's, are they availbe yet? I have missed several deals this year already because someone went a day or 2 early and asked about the sale.

alright, i'll do that. i wasn't sure whether i should or not. i mean this area isn't a huge mass-market for game collectors, but then i've never ran into any, and tomorrow might be a time when i do.

In my area, sales starting before 9 AM on a Saturday are a rarity. There's occasionally one on a Friday, but I think I've only ever seen one, maybe two, that begin on Thursdays. Most families are too busy to run a sale during the week and/or too lazy to start before 9 (I see tons beginning at 10, sometimes even 11, and it really throws off my planning).

I would not recommend doing this. It's rude and people do not appreciate being bothered like that.

Also it doesn't specifically say video games. In my experience, "games" usually means board games and things like that.

How close is the sale to your house? Check the sale at 8 or 830, if there's no activity, head back at 9.
Quit complaining.

I dont think you understand what he is saying. People have started to do that here also. I used to be able to get up at 7 and hit all the sales in a straight line with no backtracking. but now I can hit a neighborhood at 8, and by 11 there are twice as many sales and 90% of them arent advertised so it is almost impossible to know when and where to start/stop. and with gas at $4.00 its not worth backtracking.

Christ, what's with all of the butthurt and winy indignation emerging in this thread that usually has such a sense of community?

I mention, "Hm, sale on a Thursday, what an oddity" and get three people jumping down my throat with "ZOMG TAHTS HOW ITZ DONE NOOB." I clarify that such things are a rarity in my area, and get bitched at for complaining.

Seriously, people, lighten up. This isn't GameFAQs or 4chan.

Generally, this tends to be my favorite thread because everyone here tends to be really chill and supportive of one another. It looks like that's coming to an end.

For real - Down this way, I have never seen a yard sale on Thursday, and it is pretty rare to see them on Friday or Sunday

i'm with you slim. i read last year's thread and loved the hell out of reading it, but never posted because my job didn't allow me the time of day to get to garage sales. and this year, it seems like all the enjoyment of seeing people's awesome hauls thursday (yes i said thursday) through saturday is ruined by people who make a huge deal of something that isn't (thursday).

It's not about the question itself, it's that exactly the same question was covered within the past few weeks in this still-relatively-short thread.
