I really have no idea if there is a $600 penny in there or not but I imagine the condition of the coins isn't that great since they did come from vending machines. It sounds like it would be best to take a small amount of coins each time or perhaps hit a coin show with my multiple family members and split up the coins between us so it wouldn't be one person walking in with a huge ziploc full of coins. We don't have that many coins so its not like I would be walking into one dealer with a huge jar or anything like that. I also have a silver certificate dollar bill from 1957. I might try taking a handful of coins to the flea market if I can find a coin dealer there just to gauge the prices.
1) See if your local library has a coin price guide.
2) Get a magnifying glass
3) Most coins have a tiny mint mark that can affect the value greatly.
4) General rule of thumb. If a coin (non penny) is pre-1965 it is a Silver Coin. At a minimum it is worth money just for the silver.

Good tips on coins from Slow

You might get some useful information (on value and dealers) from "Coin World" newspaper.

Probably the toughest thing is grading coins . . . getting a good sense of their condition. Often the value will vary greatly between grades.

my grandpa was a huge coin collector and it was a tradition to get me silver dollars that were 100 years old from that year for birthday every year. I assume some of those are worth something but I've never checked into it.

One exception to this rule is Kennedy half-dollars, if the year is between 1965-1970 you have yourself 40% silver coin. Some people with the magic 1964 number in their head will miss out on these, so it's something to watch out for.
Most coins have a tiny mint mark that can affect the value greatly.
Check for misprints too--for example if you 1922 coin with the last "2" near a weakly struck "1", errors like that can multiply the value.

I posted that I missed out on a GBC on Thur. morning, but on Thur. night (almost 9 pm) I saw a neighbor setting up for a sale and found:

Marked $8 but I got it for $5 and had to run home for cash.

Friday started nicely as I hit this sale at open. In the driveway there were videotapes (all crap) and PS2 games (maybe 20, $1 each and all commons--first GTA of the day) but I grabbed these:

I thought I was done but in the garage I spotted this stuff on a table:

Actually, I first spotted the GBP and saw the black case (which I thought was empty because it was marked $2) to my surprise the blue gamegear was inside with a car adapter. The screen is very clean, it works great (sound!) and both battery covers are intact.
There was a PS1 (old style with some junk games--I passed on it) but then I saw this case on the table:

I verified it had a system in it but didn't check the games until later. The total for everything came to $10.50 but they took $10 . . . I didn't feel any need to bargain.

I was surprised by the quantity of games it had (thought there were 4-5 but not surprised at the quality (I never get kickass bundles :whistle2:()

This stuff is from 6 different sales . . . lots of little pickups:

Paid $2 for the 3 PS1 games
$5 for Country Karaoke
$1 for Deadly A
$2 for SMW (guy wanted $40 for a SNES sys . . . would take $30--pass)
.50 for Castlevania soundtrack

My last Friday pickup, pretty crappy garage sale and I asked about games . . . waited a few minutes but woman produced a box with some crud but with games within. I think I passed on my 2nd or 3rd PS2 GTA game of the day :). But digging I pulled out this stuff:

I showed her the Ipod (4GB and dirty but cleaned up and charged nicely) and said "you want to sell this?" and she agreed. I took Killing Zone cuz I don't know it but now know to pass on it in the future. Duke's disc is a little scratched but Alien and Dune are very clean. I paid $5 for all.

I fucked up on a lawn mower . . . they were asking $100 and I tried to get them to $90 but they wouldn't budge. I couldn't carry it with my Civic anyway . . . came back later willing to pay $100 (it was in much, much better shape than my current one and easily worth every penny) with a better vehicle for carrying it. I just got too stubborn about the $10 in the moment . . . pretty stupid on my part.
Speaking of coins:

I have some old coins here, my grandpa used to work at a vending company, so he has quite a few older coins. We want to sell them but we don't even know where to start. There are a ton of fly by night companies who are coming into our town and sending out ads that they will buy old coins, silver and gold. I assume going into one of these places would be a bad idea. How can I go about getting a fair price on these coins without getting screwed? I don't know anything about old coins.
You may want to find a local coin club, collectors will often pay more than a dealer will. Dealers normally use the ABP (average buying price) column from the price guides for purchases (depending on grade of the coin). Most commonly circulated coins will not bring any more than that.

As far as price guides, I wouldn't use a book published yearly since the price of metals has gone way up in just the past few months. The prices in the yearly books would be undervalued. Instead go to a book store and purchase a monthly publication or two. The prices will not match in each publication 100% but it should give you an idea of your coins true value.

Some of the better Coins to look out for are from the first year of a design or from certain mints (eg. "CC" for Carson City, though you only find these in the 1800s). Also coins from the early 1930's are usually scarce, particularly 1931 since we were in the deepest part of the depression and mintage was at it's lowest point since the turn of the century.

I'm assuming most of your coins range in years from early 1940's through mid 1960's. Last I have seen these usually have a price ranging between $3 - $5 each depending on mint and denomination.

Also of note, Nickels struck from 1943 - 1945 were made of 90% silver. You can tell right away because the mint mark is large and is centered over the top of Monticello on the reverse.

I still buy, so if you are interested hit me up.

P.S. - DO NOT clean or polish the coins. Some new to coins think this makes them more appealing, this actually devalues them.

Great suggestion of selling directly to coin collectors. Getting informed would make that possible.

My brother collects coins and has subscribed to Coin World for decades.

I've seen that publication at stores before but I've never read it. Back when I did most of my collecting prices were more stable so a yearly issue worked fine.

I still run across silver coins in change every once in awhile. My friend that manages a fast food resturant even runs into full rolls about once a year. He sells them to me for whatever they are going for on ebay minus about 15-20% since he is saving on hassle and listing fees.

My guess is relatives are inheriting or raiding grandma and grandpa's horde and spend it because they don't know what they have.

Stopped by a few places today. The only place that had videogames wanted $10 per Wii game, Kinect for $60, 360 for $90, o.g. xbox for $40. Little to rich for my blood (though I would have grabbed the Kinect if I had the money). Actually did get this from there though:

$1.

Box is a bit damaged, and board is a little warped. The instruction book has some highlighted stuff. Other than that, it is complete and in great condition.

If you have junk just hold onto it for a few yrs. I hate numismatics so I'd get rid of those first.

Saturday was limited for me.

This sale had some books and DVDs. I spotted this box of games but it looked pretty picked over . . . then again, I remember buying games at this sale last year . . . anyway. I'm sifting through and ended up with:

I bought Sheep for the heck of it. I only found the Diablo on my second pass on the box--it was standing on edge (no visible label) on an end. The Pokemon Blue was separate on another table. Paid $2.25 for all three.

This other sale was like a treasure hunt. The guy running the sale was all . . . "today is dollar day . . . anything on this table." Unfortunately, there was really nothing interesting on the long table. But I did see the blue GBA cable:

I was about to ask about games but then I saw the plastic container had a few GB and GBA games (Zelda). When I asked about games, he dug in a box in the driveway and brought out these Wii games:

He made it clear that he wanted $2 each for them. I looked in box and saw the GBA and GBC systems. He said I could just have them because he didn't know if they worked. The GBC has a battery cover and starts but is missing a start button . . . doh! The GBA is missing its battery cover but works great. I paid $6 for everything.

This was a Sunday sale (I was just out driving and stopped at 2 sales). There wasn't much beyond the stuff I bought:

The kid (maybe 12) seemed pretty on the ball. The SP had a "make an offer "sticker, so I put the Fire Red and the system together and offered $15 (would gone lower but FR had a $10 label). He wanted $20, so I said I'd give him $20 if he included the Geometry Wars game. He accepted and threw in the BMX game.

I haven't touched the coins so there is no worry about damaging them further.

These are great tips on coins especially since more people are looking to sell since the market has exploded. Thanks for all the tips.

Is a one dollar coin from 1883 worth anything? Because I have one here.

I also have a large penny from 1852, and a large handful of buffalo nickels. I don't have access to the rest of the stash right now, my mom has a couple coins given to her by relatives as well.

^^^ Yes the 1883 dollar is worth money. It can vary by condition and by mint mark. Do not sell anything until you find out what you have.

Oh and thanks indigo for the info on the Kennedy halfs...I didn't realize there were other silver years. I probably turned some of them in (but that was 20 years ago, so I can't beat myself up about it).
They were 35%
#-o

It's been awhile.

As far as the 1883 dollar, flip it over on tails side and look at the bottom between the wreaths. You will find the mint mark there. If it says "CC", "O" or "S" it is definitely worth something.

Ok, it does not have a mint mark, but I do greatly appreciate the information.

I have had some customers at my previous cashier job give me silver dimes, also sometimes they were found in the cash till in the rolls we opened, we were allowed to take them as long as we put a regular dime in place of them. So older coins are out there, they just don't come up that often.

NES Systems With 21 Games & Some Controllers & Hookups - 30

Walked to my first sale Friday that was right around the corner from my place surprised to see this stuff out for sale in a box. Unfortunately I was told it was 50 to which I pointed out the missing AC adaptors and countered with 20. When the guy offered to do 30 I tried to meet him in the middle from that (25) but 30 was the best I could get him to do and not even being 8 yet probably wasen't helping me. He actually added in the 3rd system for parts that was missing all of the screws and of which I didn't notice had Dr Mario in it till I got home.

XG3: Extreme G Racing (PS2, Complete) - 1
Simpsons Hit & Run With Case & Manual For Sonic Mega Collection (GC) With Nintendo Power - 1.10
PS2 With Controller & Hookups (Parts), N64 With AC Adaptor, FC Twin With Hookups & 14 Cart Only Games - 5

Last gen games from different sales asking a buck each, NP for .10. Asked about video games at a sale and 2 boxes were brought out. One with the Nintendo stuff which I offered 5 for and then I ended up taking the broken PS2 for 3 more.

PS1 With Some Misc & 15 Complete Games - 15

Asked about just selling games and when 3 per a game was suggested I ended up (be it a bad decision) trying 15 for everything from 20 instead of trying to offer less then 3 per a game if I picked out a few.

Game Boy Systems With 4 Games & Some Misc - 10

This is all from the same sale as the PS1 stuff. Pretty much asking price with only .50 taken off when I was offered the last soft case left behind to be added in. The GBA said it needed cleaned and was only marked 2 and the cleaning consisted of a battery in the system that was leaking but wasen't too bad.

Xbox 360 System With 2 Controllers & Hookups - 10
3 Games - 1.50

The 3 games were asking price at 1, .25 & .25. I saw the 360 fairly late in the morning. I asked if it had anything wrong with it and was told it works. It was marked 30 OBO and my offer of 10 was taken.

Got out both Friday & Saturday at about 7:40 and was out for about 4 hours both days. Got to 21 sales Friday & 32 Saturday.

A little of all of the typical stuff like 2 houses which mentioned something from somebody else in the family if I came back Saturday only to be told sorry on Saturday when I came back and them having nothing. I take this with a grain of salt and don't go out of my way to return since it usually ends up in nothing. Two houses that mentioned having something collecting dust but with a little friendly prodding they don't seem eager to bring it out just to get it out of the house, this week one was deep in the attic and the other I was told everything was scattered around or something of the likes. I understand that it may be a pain depending on the situation but on the other hand typically when you run into that one house that is serious about moving some old games out of the house when you ask about them they don't mess around and will go inside and take a few minutes to round it up and bring it out. I don't remember anyone mentioning anything interesting that I missed when asking about video games.

The one house I want to elaborate on and the main reason it's worth doing a non find BS this week. This sale in particular advertised Playstation & Xbox 360 so I'm thinking most likely games or maybe systems or even both. I didn't bother going out of my way to get to this sale right away and got to it when it came up in my route. I see the Playstations then an N64 and was happy to spot a small stack of boxed SNES games..........I notice the N64 is high at 40 thinking ok the systems are price ed high and maybe that 40 also includes some games I'm not noticing then I see Gradius III on top of the boxed SNES stack but it has a sticker that says 12 on it [!] I ask the lady on the porch about this to make sure hoping that it's not the price and I was told yeah that's right to which I basically said something like I'm used to paying like a buck for these old games to which I'm told as if she is educating me that these games are worth money and the magic word "eBay" was used. BSing with the lady she's never sold a thing on eBay and I even tried to get her to let go of the box for Zelda:ALTTP since I'm just a box away from a complete copy but I was told that then the game would be worthless (or something like that) since they turn into gold in this lady's mind with the box (even if they are flat as a pancake) so I didn't even bother trying to further push to make a deal for just the box and gave up, I could see that the cart was marked 20 has if at some point (at a previous yardsale?) it was for sale as just the game. It sucked to walk away since I was interested in a few of the SNES games boxed/complete for my collection if they were at least reasonably cheap. I did decide before I left to write down my e-mail and gave it to this lady and told her that if she gets sick of having the games around and decides to deal to move them I would be interested.

I'll list some of the games and prices I can remember from this sale.

2 Playstation systems that seemed to have everything needed - 20 each
Nintendo 64 that I think had everything needed - 40
Original Xbox 360 system with I can't even remember what - Didn't even bother I'm guessing 80-100
Rush 2: Extreme Racing USA (cart only N64) - 8
Final Fantasy VII (complete) - 16
Mega Man X4 or one of the other 2D PS1 Mega Mans (PS1, complete) - 25!
Resident Evil 2 or one of the other PS1 Resident Evil games disk only - 17
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES, complete minus map and little tips & tricks booklet) - 30

I only looked inside the box of Actraiser 2 & Zelda ALTTP out of the SNES games so I know that they at least included manuals, the Zelda box had some wear (only game with a cardboard insert) but was clearly in better shape then the rest of the SNES games which IIRC all seemed to be missing the cardboard inserts from the pancake like crushing the boxes were showing, all of these games were marked 12.

Actraiser 2, Gradius III, Street Fighter II Turbo, Super R-Type

I'm at least remembering most if not all of the SNES games while I kind of tuned out with the PS1 games (probably about 10 of them total). I actually was thinking of making an offer of 10 on Final Fantasy which for some odd reason was priced on the lower end of what it sells for online but figured the lady would probably drop her price a buck at best and decided it better for non of this stuff to sell vs cherry picking the one item that isn't extremely expensive.
I didn't see anyone else mention this, but you might want to look up the price of Dragon Warrior IV if you plan on selling it. It's pretty pricey. That's a great find.

Here is the first post.

Not nickels apparently, I just found around 11 pre-1964 nickels in my coin jar only to find out that nickels stopped being silver in the 40s. I did find one 1964 dime, though.

Hey, Longtime reader, secondtime poster. I read this thread pretty regularly and usually try to hit up garage sales, but because of my habit of sleeping in, it doesn't work out. So I try going to Goodwill for some finds. This summer for $2-3 each I got the Games below: Pokemon Silver (Doesn't save, but works), Frogger 2, Kirby's dreamland, Space invaders, Metroid 2, and Super chase hq, (or whatever it's called). I actually had success at a yard sale last weekend and picked up spyro for the playstation in really good shape, with only a little scratching on the disc.
But anyways, I got on here to post this awesome find I got at goodwill today for 4.99. Caesar's palace SEALED for the gameboy. There's one on ebay for sale for $85 or so right now but that's not really a good reference, I might just keep it for the heck of it. Pics Below.

DSC02508.jpg

Hit up one today. Nothing I was overly interested in but a ton of country records, some autographed even for 50 cents a piece. I ended up snagging a locally recorded record called The Colonial Keystone for the 1976 bicentennial. Narrated by Lorne Greene from Bonanza, it was still sealed so I couldn't pass it up. I see two on ebay one going for $6 and one for $30. $30 says mint, but both are opened.

Also found my nephew an Abe Lincoln pencil sharpener as he's huge into the Presidents.

Hopefully tomorrow will yield some actual games as I haven't seen a single one in the past 10 or so yardsales I've been to.

fuck

So, I was happy because I bought a 360 Elite (120GB) in box from a guy who seemed OK. It was marked $65 but I got it for $60. I bring it home two hours later and the first time I power it up--red ring. I power down and back up . . . I can't get a controller to recognize . . . try a wired one . . . no go. I've got it hooked up via HDMI but the video starts breaking down.

I bring it back but guy's not there but the wife calls him on her phone. He won't do a refund until he looks at it . . . wtf. I just left it there with my number on it. Whatever.

So, after a few slow weeks of yard-sailing and a hurricane, I think my luck is changing. Had a couple good craigslist buys this week ( I haven't been able to say that in a long time!) and then today, I got a call. Once they guy said he'd sold me some Nintendo stuff earlier in the summer I knew exactly who it was.

IMG_2756.jpg

That was the original lot. Today, he said he had a few PS1 games, gold cart Zelda, and then some random accessories. He said he wanted $40 for the new stuff he'd found.

IMG_3389.jpg

:D I already have a few of the games but, Lunar, Chrono Cross, and a boxed Game Genie were all on my wish list. Earlier this summer, all I wanted to find was Lunar after playing the Sega CD version! Lunar has 3 of the discs and the hard-bound book (it's missing the music CD). The game genie has the code book and looks like it was never used. Everything else is complete. I bought FFVIII from him the first go around so it was nice to get the manual for it. Anyway, gave him $60. I felt bad for not giving him more the first time I bought from him, I just gave him what I had left in my wallet that day.

Happy hunting guys! I'll check up with you all on Saturday or Sunday.

I'd never buy a used 360 at any price for that reason. hope you can get your money back, or at least some of it.

nice job on the PS1 finds. I'd like to get another copy of Chrono Cross for cheap if square isn't going to get it up on PSN soon.

The xbox 360 is one console where I would rather spend $300 for a slim with hard driven (less if you consider retail store promos) rather than waste any amount of money on a used 360 that is most likely busted.

The jaspers are pretty good, I had an arcade jasper unit for about two years and it ran cooler than my slim does.

Eh, Jasper (and to a less degree, Falcons) are better, but they do still RRoD. I haven't heard of any Valhallas RRoDing. And I doubt your Jasper runs cooler, since it shouldn't. Maybe there are other small factors you're overlooking, like ventilation, HDD...

This has totally been my attitude and I feel a little stupid for buying a 360 for more than $20. It was almost comical . . . the moment I turned it on it gave a red ring.

This was a guy about 50 who was "mr. business man" he was on his way out to work when I struck the deal. He was a little clueless about the system (called it a 360 light at first). The system looked good and was in original box. He looked me right in the eye when I asked if it worked and said yes. I hoped it would run a little quiter than mine and thought I could spin mine off and come OK. I have white one that I got a decent deal on it in 2007 . . . this was the first batch to have HDMI output. I've never had any problems with it (knock on wood) but it runs loud . . . the fan noise drives me nuts.

The kicker is that when I talked to the guy on the wife's cell, he was pretty much accusing me of trying to pull a fast one on him and switching the system. He was like "I need to look it over and try it . . . cuz we used it not long ago." I was saying, "why would I do that." And he says, "I don't know you." So, I said, "so if you run it and it doesn't work, you're not going to refund me?" He backed off. I just said that I would leave it and "trust him" to refund the money.

I left my phone number on a notepad and on the system. I'm pretty sure he'll come through. If not, I'll have to eat this one . . . not a biggie in terms of a whole season of good deals.

After being gone for a little while Im going to try some sales this weekend.

Nice find again with that guy Dasme - I've yet to find Breath of Fire 4 or any Lunar series yet, awesome on those. I loved BoF4 when I played it as a rental from BB;p

The next two posts will be form the same sale. This lady had a lot of Disney books and collectibles. I paid $7 total for this post.

Basically everything was 5 for a $1

A lady that I have run into at a few sales this past year tried to take my pile of stuff, but the person running the sale told her it was mine. She then looked at me and raced over to a table and started grabbing stuff. Too bad it was the new "Made in China" stuff

She also buys video games and she has gone as far as sticking her hand in the same stack I am flipping though.

Various Vintage (70s) Disney books. Most of these are form England.

These are digest comic books. As a rule of thumb ANY digest except Archie related ones are worth money. These are Gold Key digests.
These are in the Overstreet comic book price guide.

Another tip: The two books at the top of this pic are called Big Little Books. They can be worth anywhere from $5 to $500 each if they are a rare one. These are in the Overstreet comic book price guide as well.

These sell for between $25 -$50 per set (with the slipcase).

Easily $150 resale value ($250 if I take my time). :bouncy:

i admit i'm not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to 360 revisions but I bought that arcade just about 2 months before the slim was announced that e3.

Maybe it wasn't jasper, but this other one you were talking about.

Those disney books are awesome, because of the art and because of the resale value.

Damn Slowdive, I wouldnt make it where you live.

Despite my city being absolutely huge, I've never seen people get so fierce or up in arms over yard sales. I rarely see competition either - at least not for what I want.
Not many sales listed for tomorrow. I think my season is winding down.
Definitely dying here . . . which is OK, with back-to-school I'll have less time.

I did have a more positive experience today. This sale looked dead and then I spotted a box with a bunch of videogames . . . too bad they were mostly outdated sports games.

The guy said $1 each. I pulled out this stuff (all complete and with great discs except SMB):

Six games, 2 controllers and a face plate with NFL logos.

I offered $5 for the whole group and he countered with $6. Sold.

I'm seeing a slight increase in sales for labor day this weekend. A few advertising PS1 and N64 stuff i'm hoping have some good stuff for cheap on saturday.

Hit three today. Sadly, the game drought continues.

Did find my dad four Piel's coasters at the second, a neighboring one. He's drank Piel's beer as far as I can remember and it's really hard to find merch by them as I think they only really made stuff for bars in the 60's and 70's.

Find of the day was at the final one. Picked up a Fujifilm FinePix A330 3.2 MP 3x Zoon digital camera for $2. It came with a 128 MP XD card and batteries included and after I left, it fired right up and there were pics still on it from 2004. When will people learn to clear up? No cables, but the cord looks generic and besides my PC has a 11-in-1 reader. Ah well, my mom was looking for a camera and it doesn't take too bad of pics.

^Found one of those cameras last year at a yard sale for a few bucks as well. Takes decent pictures if you're not shaky.

My experience is that advertised games usually let me down . . . but good luck.

I got my $60 back on the 360 from yesterday. The guy was (do a Peter Cushing voice) charming to the last.

I believe that he really believes that the 360 was fine and that I swapped it out on him.

The whole thing really sucks. If it were $20 I would've just cut my losses and kept the HD and controller.

Thanks for the praise guys! (I am probably keeping most of the Disney stuff since some of the books look like the haven't been read. Condition is EVERYTHING)

I have to admit, I had to look that one up! :applause:

EDIT: BTW. Only 3 new sales today. #-o

There is a promising one tomorrow though.

I found the pendant that came with the Special Edition of Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete for the PS1. It caught my eye immediately, but I wasn't certain that it was from Lunar until I saw (c)Working Designs 2000 on the back of it. Guy only wanted $0.50. I grabbed it with hesitation or haggling. Here's the funny part, this was just over a day after I found the Lunar 2 soundtrack CD at a second hand store for a quarter. Both were found about 2 weeks after I finally found Lunar 2 itself.

No money, but I did shop a tiny section of the big sale that covers about 40 miles of highway.

Saw some smelly/dirty consoles (about 5 PS2s, a SNES, and an Atari) marked $30 each. They each came with a mess of cords/controllers.

Next to that were about 40 Atari, Coleco, Intellivision games in a box marked $2 each. Offered $15 knowing it would get shot down.

Came home, the end.

I managed to goto about 20 today . . . but many are people's second sale of the year. Late in the season you get the retreads and the slackers . . . either way, not all that great.

New reality for me is that Thursday I can't go out and Friday I have to get my daughter on the bus. So I can't start until 9 am . . . which makes if feel like I'm missing stuff.

Very little gaming stuff today but I did alright on books.

yeah the best stuff is ones you find along the way to the advertised ones. I need a place to go though, i can't just wander the suburbs, being in milwaukee. There's so many areas to go to and so little time. Could hit waukesha, brookfield, mequon, brown deer, wauwatosa, south milwaukee, cudahy...

Slowdive, I think you're right, I think garage sales are winding down around my area too.

Gonna try a few spots north of me, then a flea market in the afternoon. In all fairness, though, I had some of my best pulls last September towards the end of the season.

I didn't realize people returned things at garage sales. I assumed it was an as-is thing. If someone came back to my house after a garage sale was over wanting to return something I would tell them to get lost. :)

I returned a fax machine once. Guy told me it worked and it didn't. I would have passed had he not guaranteed it. If you tell someone something works you should make good on your word if it doesn't.

I hate when people lie about items working. I have "returned" my purchases to the seller via their front yard in the middle of the night after finding out they are full of BS.
