condition stuff seemingly pulled back by amazon, spoilered until I can reorg
Notice 4/14/11: New shenanigans abound! There is now a condition field for all trades - all trades are set to "Good" and may be determined to be worse than that ("Acceptable") or better ("Like New"). During the trade-in confirmation process you may choose whether to have an item in worse condition returned to you or just processed at the lower value. It does appear that this might mean that NORAM will start taking games/consoles without original packaging / manuals / etc which might be beneficial to some.

We'll see how this works out! To be added to the core FAQ after its newness wears off.

GENERAL FAQ (Updated 12/10/09)

Can I post question on this thread?
Only if you can't find the answer from below. And please let me know if it needs to be added to FAQ.

My cover art (PLATINUM HITS) differs from the pic on amazon, will my trade be accepted?
It all depends on the UPC so just turn your game around, type in the upc into the amazon search box. If the game comes up, then it's accepted regardless of cover art. Click on that result to submit your trade.

Since when did Amazon start doing trades?
The program began in 2009 and is handled by a third party merchant, NorAm International.

What kind of shipping does Amazon provide us?
Free UPS ground ---- USPS is no longer available for free. There is now also an option to provide your own shipping.

Do I have to provide my own box or envelope?
Yes.

Do all my games in the same trade-in submission have to be shipped in the same box? (updated 3/9/11)
Not necessarily - people have sent in multiple boxes for the same trade-in submission successfully. It's even possible to send half at one time and the other half at the end of the valid shipping period. However, it's probably best to always ship everything at once.

Can I send in sealed games?
Yes. They won't reject games that still have the original shrink wrap.

Can I add Delivery Confirmation and Insurance to my shipment?
For UPS Ground
It already provides you with tracking information.

I don't trust UPS ground. Can I pay for postage myself? What's the address?
Yes. You're more than welcome to do so. The address is:
NorAm International
22 Hampshire Dr
Hudson, NH 03051

(This is also an option when submitting your trades)

When do I have to send my games once I have submitted my trade order?
You have 1 week (7 days) to send your games. There have been reports of submitting trades up to 15 - 20 days late, but that is definitely ymmv. Send on time for the best chance at success!

Crap, I have one day to go before my shipment deadline, but the website states that my deadline has already passed. How do I print out a shipping label and packing slip?
Load up any existing order (if you don't have any, check your browser's history), and substitute the transaction ID for the trade-in order you need at the end of the URL.

How long does the whole trade-in process usually take?
From the time you send in your games, it may take up to 14 business days for the package to arrive. Most people usually receive their credit (Amazon GiftCard) in 3 to 5 business days, however.

How long does the "processing" status usually take?
Usually with no delay, but the longest reported days so far is 4.

My games were received on Friday (based on Delivery Confirmation), will I have to wait until Monday to receive credit?
People have received credit on a Saturday.

I do not have the manual, cover art, or original case for a game I want to trade in. Will they accept it?
While the details specifically state that original packaging is necessary, people have reported in the past that their trades were accepted despite missing some of these. This is extremely YMMV, however since some were also rejected by missing manual or cover art. On the other hand, older gen games; such as SNES, N64, and GB cartridges, normally get accepted without the original box and manual, but still YMMV.
It's always better if you trade your non-complete game as an additional credit, not part of the minimum requirement to qualify for the promo.

I do not have the manual, accessories, original box, original included game, etc for a console or accessory I want to trade in. Will they accept it? (updated 3/9/11)
The current wisdom is "probably not" - it's pretty YMMV but NorAm seems stricter than they should be on this. Your chances seem to be better for them accepting a console or accessory without the box / manual / etc if it's older generation or rare. You're more than welcome to give it a shot though if you're feeling lucky - just pack it well and include as much as you can!

My game is really beat up, what are the chances they’ll accept it?
This is YMMV. Some people have reported in the past that they sent in games in bad shape that were still accepted. Your best bet is still to trade in games in mint condition. Minor scratches are expected as these are used games.

My game is the Greatest Hits version, but the one pictured on the site isn’t. Can I still trade it in?
Unless the game in question has two separate versions that trade at different values, sending in a greatest hits version is okay.

I have a game from a limited edition bundle, will they accept it?
If the game’s cover art has a UPC barcode, they will most likely accept it. If your game's cover states "Not for Resale" and does not have a UPC barcode, the game will most likely get rejected. Some people have had their games accepted in the past, but this is YMMV.

The UPC barcode is not intact on my game's cover art, will that be accepted? (updated 3/9/11)
This is YMMV, but probably not. The UPC is all powerful within the walls of NorAm.

I sent in my games, all of which were in pristine condition with the original packaging, but they said that one game is damaged and is now being returned.
Always pack your games well. Put a lot of newspaper around your games in the box to secure them and to prevent any damages from haphazard box cutting. People in the past have requested their entire trade-in order if it’s obvious the damage wasn’t their fault, and Amazon ended up accepting the rejected game. This is YMMV as well.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
Yes. Once you click “Trade in” for a particular game, you may change the quantities. Once you submit, you can no longer change quantities on that trade-in batch.

How many multiple copies of the same game can I trade-in (updated 1/11/11)?
Maximum of 2 copies within 3 months period

I locked in X copies of a game but I now only have Y available to send. Can I just send in Y without being penalized? (updated 3/9/11)
Yes, you can always just send in a portion of your trade-in order and they'll just credit you for whatever they receive. However, the quantities you submitted for will stay locked in that instance (I think) so if you, for example, submitted for 2 copies and only sent 1, you may not be able to trade any more copies of that game for 3 months (see previous question).

Will the Trade-in of the Day TIV stay for 24 hours?
It's been reported that there is a limit (maximum # of copies) that will get the promoted TIV so lock yours.

So if I find a good flip, I can just send 2 copies of that game and not worry about Amazon accusing me of stolen merchandise?
Technically yes, but do keep in mind that other CAGs might want to participate in the current deal, and trading in a large number of the same game will definitely lower the TIV of said game. Let’s be nice to other people.

Wow, these TIVs suck (updated 3/9/11)!
Really? Hrm. While that may be true, they're often better than other comparable places. Your options of what to do with your used games are greater now than they've ever been, so feel free to shop your trades around or just sell them off on glyde/gamestaq/ebay/whatever.

What the fuck? The TIV of a game I just bought for this deal tanked! What do I do?
The TIVs on Amazon fluctuate depending on the number of trades that are submitted, and we really can’t do anything about it. The best course of action for trading in games is to lock in your trade if you already have the games or are absolutely sure that you can obtain them. You can always cancel the trade submission if you end up not finding the games.

LOCK = SUBMIT YOUR TRADE, Don't just put it in the cart.

Can I edit a submitted trade?
Nope - once upon a time you could modify trade in quantities of submitted trades, but that ability has been removed.

Can I use my credit (not the trade-in deal coupon) on items that are not video game-related?
Yes. This is the other perk for trading in games at Amazon since you're not limited to just video games.

Can I use my credit on items sold by third-party merchants on Amazon?
According to the fine print of the Amazon gift card use, some merchants are excluded. Your best bet is to try it on the checkout page of your order.

Strategy guides? I can trade in game/strategy guides? Whaaaaa?
Go to the Textbook Buyback section (http://www.amazon.com/Textbooks-Trad...ode=2205237011). You can either search on the title of a strategy guide you have to see if they'll accept it, or search for guides. The two best search strings to start with are 'prima guides' and 'bradygames'. Might try 'doublejump' if you want to trade in some of those. (Thanks eugaet)

I locked in some hilariously overvalued trade for some weird rare game/accessory/etc that I can pick up for cheap cheap cheap. They didn't accept it. What should I do? (updated 3/9/11)
The truth is that NORAM can reject things for any reason they see fit. While some people have managed to get silly things like a $200 credit for some cheerleading game, it's sooooooo YMMV that often it's not worth the effort. EXPECT REJECTION ON THINGS THAT ARE CLEARLY MISVALUED. That said, as long as you're willing to risk it, go for it!

trade-in promo related faq spoilered for history. promos no longer offered by amazon
---- TRADE-IN PROMO RELATED FAQ ---

When do I receive my coupon code for the current trade-in deal, if any?
The Terms of Service states 10 days after Amazon has accepted your games and added credit to your account, but it usually takes 2 to 3 days.

Can I do two different trade-in submissions that add up to the requirements of the current trade-in deal, if any?
No. In order to qualify for any of the trade-in promos, they have to all be in one trade-in submission. You can't add another game later on to make the minimum. However, you can adjust the quantity of the submitted game to make the minimum.

I submitted my trade-in order online, how do I know if I qualified for the current trade-in deal, if any? Is there a confirmation page or e-mail?
No. They will automatically send you a coupon code once they have accepted your shipment of games and credited your account.

Is the trade-in deal coupon in addition to the credit I will receive for my games?
Yes.

Can I trade in DVDs to take advantage of the current trade-in deal?
You may trade in DVDs to add credit to your Amazon account, but they will not be added to the amount you need to qualify for the deal.

Can I take advantage of the current trade-in (if available) promo more than once?
These deals are “One per household” unless stated otherwise. However, you may use a different Amazon account. The credit for your games will be tied to the specific account used for the trade, but the coupon codes for the deals are not.
*However, some people has confirmed that they get multiple coupon by using 1 Amazon account after doing multiple submission.
NOTE: IF YOU SEND MORE THAN 1 SUBMISSION, THE MULTIPLE COUPONS MIGHT COME IN 1 EMAIL, THE CODE IS SEPARATED BY A COMMA.

If the coupon codes aren’t tied to my account, can I use more than one coupon on my next purchase?
No. Unless stated otherwise in the promo details, these coupons cannot be combined with other offers or promotions.

So if they reject one of my games, am I disqualified from the current trade-in deal, if any?
Unfortunately yes. The best suggestion for trading in games is to trade in $10-$20 more than the minimum for the deal. By doing so, you will still qualify for the promo even if one or two games get rejected.

Can I use the trade-in deal coupon on preorders?
Yes.

What happen to the Coupon code if I cancel the preorder?
The coupon code will stay with your account. It will be applied automatically at check-out as long as the coupon is not expired.

Can I use the trade-in deal coupon when shopping from other merchants on Amazon?
No. ONLY ITEMS SOLD BY AMAZON.COM QUALIFY FOR PURCHASE WITH THE TRADE-IN COUPON. Even Amazon's other sites (Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.jp, etc.) do not participate in these trade-in deals.

Trade-in coupon Usage:
Previous promo coupons and their expiration dates (NO ACTIVE PROMOS CURRENTLY):

1st Promo - $ 50 / $75 Coupon (coupon exp: 8/31) - Game Console Only
2nd Promo - 50 % Coupon (coupon exp: 8/31) - Game and Accessories
3rd Promo - $ 30 Coupon (coupon exp: 12/31) - Game Console, Game and Accessories
4th Promo - $ 30 Coupon (coupon exp: 12/31) - Game Console Only

^as long as you follow their instruction and no visible scratch or different version, it should be ok.

By the way, I just got credit for multiples of FtF on 2 accounts today. I only got 1 game rejected (cracked by them, complained and received the credit) out of 100s games sent so far. I guess the program is still good.

The only game they didn't accept in my package was Wii Sports. They said it was missing a UPC. Does any version of Wii sports have a UPC on it?!?! I thought they all came in the box with the wii.

No, so that just shows they have people ignorant about video games processing these trades. They seem to be operating more recently under very strict UPC guidelines - so much so that they are trying to take a game that never had one. I wonder what they expect it to be? (Since they reject alternate versions of other games they must have a "expected" UPC for each game).

I had a couple packages on my way from before Christmas and they are still "in transit" from MA to NH. Stupid UPS. Using the now defunct media mail option I bet they would have been there already.

Accepted 4 games. One sent back because of incorrect item. Wonder what that's all about since I'm pretty sure everything was correct when I shipped it out. Guess I'll find out when it gets back to me.

been trading in a lot of stuff on amazon recently. No problems so far, but shipping this time of year is pretty slow. besides checking this thread, where does amazon announce its trade in promos?

Same here somewhat. I sent my stuff on 12/17 and it took until 12/29 where they checked it in at Chelmsford MA. As of yesterday, it's heading to NH. It's going to take over 2 weeks to get there. Lame.

The promos would pop up as small ads in the Amazon video game section and definitely would show up on t4he trade-in page when you went there. But I remember seeing little ads off to the right side for the $30 system promo (the last one) when just browsing the video games.

Wow, that's bad. I sent mine on the 23rd and they are in the same condition but given the two holidays that isn't too bad - just sort of frustrating that they went all the way across the country and then sat there. I think I sent one on the 18th that got accepted on the 29th (and probably delivered on the 28th).

has anyone had an problems with amazon after you lets say keep canceling game trade ins b/c you see the game is now being traded in for a higher amount? would amazon cancel you account if this happens often?

FYI: I just had 9 unopened games accepted. I recall somewhere a person having doubts they wouldn't accept them

Can you combine the credit they give you with regular money on Amazon? Like, pay half with credit and the rest the regular way?
Can you combine the credit they give you with regular money on Amazon? Like, pay half with credit and the rest the regular way?
If you're using credit it will use up all your credit before charging you the rest. You can't use just part of your credit, if that's what you mean.

i.e. If you have $20 credit and your purchase is $30. You choose to pay with credit and it will deduct the $20 and charge your credit card $10.

I hope that makes sense.

You guys tease me with these thread bumps. I keep expecting a new trade-in promo since its the start of a new year. I have 6 games sitting around that can go to either amazon or gamestop (4 for $20). I get a little bit more at gamestop but amazon credit is significantly versatile. The problem is that I have a feeling a new promo pops up shortly after i trades these.....and no im not going to trade them right now! ;)

If you guys got in on the Prime deal don't forget to upgrade the shipping on your pre-orders. I just bumped my Bayonetta and Final Fantasy 13 to release date delivery for free

left 4 dead GOTY is $18...my copy is Platinum Hits, but the image shown on amazon is not...Is this going to be an issue?

thanks

I don't think there's such a thing as a Platinum Hits GOTY. These are 2 separate games, so you have to submit the correct one. The one you have is only $7.50.

guess i should be ok..both GOTY versions have the same UPC. In fact, I bought this copy originally from amazon....

Hmm I mailed in a six game trade in on the december 21st at a UPS drop location, but there has been no movement on it at all. (The tracking info has not shown anything) Should I call Amazon?

You should call UPS tomorrow. You did get a receipt w/a tracking number, right? Or are you going off of Amazon's tracking info?

I'd at least e-mail them or go to the UPS location to see what is up. Mine showed a change on the tracking information on the same day that I dropped my stuff off.

I have Halo 3 Legendary.
I'm only interested in trading in the game. The Halo 3 TIV is $15, and the Legendary TIV is $13 (I'm sure because of the shipping for the huge box).
Is it possible to trade the game case, manual, and disc, under the Halo 3 non-legendary TIV?
Thanks in advance.

It just has to be dropped off. When I traded in some books last month, they had to be shipped by the 19th. I did so and they got them on the 22nd and I still received my credit.
just to clarify, if it says shipped by jan 9, it has to arrive there by jan 9 or just be dropped off at ups?
Uh, yeah, for me it would be impossible to get them there by the dates given. UPS takes 8-10 days from where I am to NH ;) and the date Amazon gives you is 7 days from when you submit the trade. So, yeah, it is a shipping date. And some CAGs have reported that they've sent stuff afterwards and it was still accepted.

As for the Halo 3 Legendary question: if the Halo disc is in a regular retail case with the normal Halo UPC then it is no problem. If it is in a "not for resale" case or with a different UPC than the normal one, then no, they won't accept it as stupid as that is. And they'd probably only take the Legendary version with the helmet and everything else even though they give less for it. Yeah, they don't make much sense but that's the way it is.

I have two packages that have been in transit since before Christmas. Hopefully those both get delivered tomorrow!

I just got an email saying my trade in has expired. I sent them those games 3+ weeks ago and their lazy asses never got them. So now i'm out the games, and the TIV. WTF!!!

Thats the thing, last I checked, it had been attempted on Dec 23 and then nothing. Zero. It was never updated again. I'm sure I have the tracking info somewhere, but I'd have to find it.

This irritates me. That was $27 bucks. I have sent in 3 other packages and they were all delivered today.

Interesting on my situation, no updates tracking wise, and as I went to my account to call amazon, I finally got confirmation that it was received. Only took two weeks.

My two pre-Christmas packages were delivered Monday and credited today, no problem...

I also missed the shipping deadline on my latest package but since the values hadn't changed I just resubmittted it. But just in case people were wondering, it definitely "credits" back your trade-in limit when you cancel. I had already traded 2 copies of one game a few weeks back. My latest trade included a third (and final) copy. When I tried to submit the trade without cancelling the latest one it wouldn't do it (said I was over the limit). As soon as I cancelled that last trade, even though the shipping deadline had passed, I was able to resubmit. So that's nice, anyway.

I tossed a Pikmin in to the new trade as well. It only gets $7.75 but what I'm trading is a used copy I got at the last Blockbuster B1G1 sale ($7.50 after the discount) so that I can keep the new one I just got from Best Buy (for $5). So in effect I ended up transferring $7.50 in BBV credit to $7.75 in Amazon credit (and keeping the extra Nintendo registration code in the process). Nothing mind-blowing but it was a ncie way to "upgrade" to a new copy at no loss.

Yeah, you need to find it, and contact UPS.

If the tracking number shows that you shipped it, and it was never delivered or returned, you can consult Amazon to get the credit and UPS to find the package. Start with UPS and ask what is going on with the package. The package has to be signed for, so you can definitively prove it wasn't delivered. Get a reference number and then start working with Amazon.

So I get back Street Fighter IV which they claimed was the wrong game with a "UPC Wrong" sticker on it. Thing is there only two versions of the game, the CE edition and the regular edition which I bought from Amazon brand new so no way its wrong. Why the hell would the reject the game? I really think its because it fell in value and no other reason.

I know it seems that way but they are usually pretty random about it. I had a game rejected for "missing item". All I could figure was that it was a map that I didn't include in that copy. I resubmitted it with the map and they took it - the price stayed the same the whole time. I'd be really surprised if that was really it, though, because nowhere on the case does it say there's a map included so I don't really know how they would know about that. Given that they can't seem to figure out that the same game can have different UPCs (for GS or Best Buy exclusive versions for example) I don't see how they'd know every bit that comes with another game beyond the standard case/cover art/manual.

I also had a SF IV rejected for having the HWV cover but then another (with regular cover) accepted just recently with no problem.

If yours was complete with original cover and standard UPC then I would fire off an email to Amazon complaining about it. You'll probably end up with your credit and the game back. I have yet to do this, but it seems others have gotten that treatment - probably only works once so I was saving it for when they really screwed me (but not yet - so far every rejection has had a valid reason, however trivial or idiotic they may be).

Quick sidetrack - does anyone ever actually look at the FP for the trade-in of the day instead of just looking at Amazon? I'm thinking about just leaving a link to the trade-in page there instead of changing the text every day. If that's something that's used by more than 1 or 2 people I'll leave it in though.

Anyone know if the 3 of the same game limit applies to a specific address or just accounts? I want to trade in something, but using someone else's address in case something gets rejected and returned. I don't want to use my own because it's a hassle to get packages delivered there. I'm looking to trade in a copy of a certain game, but I think my friend already traded in 3 copies of that game recently. Will my trade-in go through or will it get rejected?

Thanks for your answers.

My tracking info said my trades were delivered (this is my first Amazon trade) but my status still reads "Not Yet Received". Anyone know how long it usually takes them to mark stuff as received after it's been delivered and when/if I should start panicing :D.

This is where I'm at with things. My stuff got there two days ago, and Amazon's site still says "not yet received." I guess it could take a few business days, but I'd like to know as well.

Mine were delivered for 2 or 3 days this week before they were processed yesterday afternoon. IIRC, New England got buried in snow this week, so that may be affecting things.

I've sent in maybe 20-30 packages for trade-in since June... It has never taken more than 1 business day after delivery for them to process. Early on it always seemed like they were processed the same day as delivery. Now it does seem to be next day, usually, but never more than that. But perhaps the snow has made it a little slower just this week. But I had 2 delivered Monday this week and they were processed Tuesday, just like always (one day later).

Thanks Io.

I saw in the faq that some people have reported getting their stuff processed on Saturdays - does that seem to be the exception, or the rule? :)

I'm really hoping I get my credit soon - I'm trying to get something delivered before my next work trip!!!

I've had the same experiences as IO, next day after delivery is when I get the "shipment received" email from Amazon. However, it took over 3 weeks to get there this time. Fortunately, nothing got rejected.
