FAQ (Updated 12/01/09)
Can I post question on this thread?
Only if you can't find the answer from below. And please let me know if it needs to be added to FAQ.

Since when did Amazon start doing trades?
The program began earlier this year and is handled by a third party merchant, NorAm International.

What kind of shipping does Amazon provide us?
Free UPS ground ---- USPS is no longer available

Do I have to provide my own box or envelope?
Yes.

Do all my games in the same trade-in submission have to be shipped in the same box?
Yes.

Can I send in sealed games?
Yes. They won't reject games that still have the original shrink wrap.

Can I add Delivery Confirmation and Insurance to my shipment?
For UPS Ground
It already provides you with tracking information.

I don't trust UPS ground. Can I pay for postage myself? What's the address?
Yes. You're more than welcome to do so. The address is:
NorAm International
22 Hampshire Dr
Hudson, NH 03051

When do I have to send my games once I have submitted my trade order?
You have 1 week to send your games.

Crap, I have one day to go before my shipment deadline, but the website states that my deadline has already passed. How do I print out a shipping label and packing slip?
Load up any existing order (if you don't have any, check your browser's history), and substitute the transaction ID for the trade-in order you need at the end of the URL.

How long does the whole trade-in process usually take?
From the time you send in your games, it may take up to 14 business days for the package to arrive. Most people usually receive their credit (Amazon GiftCard) in 3 to 5 business days, however.

When do I receive my coupon code for the current trade-in deal, if any?
The Terms of Service states 10 days after Amazon has accepted your games and added credit to your account, but it usually takes 2 to 3 days.

How long does the "processing" status usually take?
Usually with no delay, but the longest reported days so far is 4.

My games were received on Friday (based on Delivery Confirmation), will I have to wait until Monday to receive credit?
People have received credit on a Saturday.

Can I do two different trade-in submissions that add up to the requirements of the current trade-in deal, if any?
No. In order to qualify for any of the trade-in promos, they have to all be in one trade-in submission. You can't add another game later on to make the minimum. However, you can adjust the quantity of the submitted game to make the minimum.

I submitted my trade-in order online, how do I know if I qualified for the current trade-in deal, if any? Is there a confirmation page or e-mail?
No. They will automatically send you a coupon code once they have accepted your shipment of games and credited your account.

Is the trade-in deal coupon in addition to the credit I will receive for my games?
Yes.

Can I trade in DVDs to take advantage of the current trade-in deal?
You may trade in DVDs to add credit to your Amazon account, but they will not be added to the amount you need to qualify for the deal.

Can I take advantage of the current trade-in (if available) promo more than once?
These deals are “One per household” unless stated otherwise. However, you may use a different Amazon account. The credit for your games will be tied to the specific account used for the trade, but the coupon codes for the deals are not.
*However, some people has confirmed that they get multiple coupon by using 1 Amazon account after doing multiple submission.
NOTE: IF YOU SEND MORE THAN 1 SUBMISSION, THE MULTIPLE COUPONS MIGHT COME IN 1 EMAIL, THE CODE IS SEPERATING BY A COMMA.

If the coupon codes aren’t tied to my account, can I use more than one coupon on my next purchase?
No. Unless stated otherwise in the promo details, these coupons cannot be combined with other offers or promotions. IT DOES STACK WITH THE ECA DISCOUNT, HOWEVER.

I do not have the manual, cover art, or original case for a game I want to trade in. Will they accept it?
While the details specifically state that original packaging is necessary, people have reported in the past that their trades were accepted despite missing some of these. This is extremely YMMV, however since some were also rejected by missing manual or cover art. On the other hand, older gen games; such as SNES, N64, and GB cartridges, normally get accepted without the original box and manual, but still YMMV.
It's always better if you trade your non-complete game as an additional credit, not part of the minimum requirement to qualify for the promo.

My game is really beat up, what are the chances they’ll accept it?
This is YMMV. Some people have reported in the past that they sent in games in bad shape that were still accepted. Your best bet is still to trade in games in mint condition. Minor scratches are expected as these are used games.

My game is the Greatest Hits version, but the one pictured on the site isn’t. Can I still trade it in?
Unless the game in question has two separate versions that trade at different values, sending in a greatest hits version is okay.

I have a game from a limited edition bundle, will they accept it?
If the game’s cover art has a UPC barcode, they will most likely accept it. If your game's cover states "Not for Resale" and does not have a UPC barcode, the game will most likely get rejected. Some people have had their games accepted in the past, but this is YMMV.

The UPC barcode is not intact on my game's cover art, will that be accepted?
This is YMMV. Just try it, but make sure to have more than enough for the minimum requirement to qualify for the deal, if available.

So if they reject one of my games, am I disqualified from the current trade-in deal, if any?
Unfortunately yes. The best suggestion for trading in games is to trade in $10-$20 more than the minimum for the deal. By doing so, you will still qualify for the promo even if one or two games get rejected.

I sent in my games, all of which were in pristine condition with the original packaging, but they said that one game is damaged and is now being returned.
Always pack your games well. Put a lot of newspaper around your games in the box to secure them and to prevent any damages from haphazard box cutting. People in the past have requested their entire trade-in order if it’s obvious the damage wasn’t their fault, and Amazon ended up accepting the rejected game. This is YMMV as well.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
Yes. Once you click “Trade in” for a particular game, you may change the quantities.

How many multiple copies of the same game can I trade-in?
Maximum of 3 copies within 3 months period (This limit MAY also include prior "Cancelled Submissions - YMMV")

Will the Trade-in of the Day TIV stay for 24 hours?
It's been reported that there is a limit (maximum # of copies) that will get the promoted TIV so lock yours.

So if I find a good flip, I can just send 3 copies of that game and not worry about Amazon accusing me of stolen merchandise?
Technically yes, but do keep in mind that other CAGs might want to participate in the current deal, and trading in a large number of the same game will definitely lower the TIV of said game. Let’s be nice to other people.

Wow, these TIVs suck!
While that may be true, you will most likely save more money because of the trade-in deal coupon code.

What the fuck? The TIV of a game I just bought for this deal tanked! What do I do?
The TIVs on Amazon fluctuate depending on the number of trades that are submitted, and we really can’t do anything about it. The best course of action for trading in games is to lock in your trade if you already have the games or are absolutely sure that you can obtain them. You can always cancel the trade submission if you end up not finding the games.

LOCK = SUBMIT YOUR TRADE, Don't just put it in the cart.

So if I can edit a submitted trade, can I add other games that weren’t originally part of the submission?
No. Only quantities can be changed. Changing quantity to 0 means you're removing the game completely from the submission; which you can't add later.

If I change the quantity of a certain game I have already submitted for a trade, will I keep the same TIV?
No, It will change to current TIV for all games in that same submission.

Can I use the trade-in deal coupon on preorders?
Yes.

What happen to the Coupon code if I cancel the preorder?
The coupon code will stay with your account. It will be applied automatically at check-out as long as the coupon is not expired.

Trade-in coupon Usage:
1st Promo - $ 50 / $75 Coupon (Exp: 8/31) - Game Console Only
2nd Promo - 50 % Coupon (Exp: 8/31) - Game and Accessories
3rd Promo - $ 30 Coupon (Exp: 12/31) - Game Console, Game and Accessories
4th Promo - $ 30 Coupon (Exp: 12/31) - Game Console Only

Can I use the trade-in deal coupon when shopping from other merchants on Amazon?
No. ONLY ITEMS SOLD BY AMAZON.COM QUALIFY FOR PURCHASE WITH THE TRADE-IN COUPON. Even Amazon's other sites (Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.jp, etc.) do not participate in these trade-in deals.

Can I use my credit (not the trade-in deal coupon) on items that are not video game-related?

Yes. This is the other perk for trading in games at Amazon since you're not limited to just video games.

Can I use my credit on items sold by third-party merchants on Amazon?
According to the fine print of the Amazon gift card use, some merchants are excluded. Your best bet is to try it on the checkout page of your order.
On the top of the trade in page it says "Trade in with our new UPS option. Get Your Amazon.com Giftcard Faster." Has anyone tried this yet?
I just looked and it's FREE! Wow! That sux, just shipped 10 boxes yesterday!

--EDIT--
Looks like you can't print UPS labels for the old orders anyways. Know which one I will be using from now on though!
The UPS option just showed up today. I don't have any new trades to submit, so maybe some of these FF7 traders can answer. I'm curious as to how much it costs to ship UPS?
Well, I just tried it and it came up with a pre-paid label and there's no mention of any extra fees to do it. Pretty sweet if you ask me, since it not only should it be quicker, but it gives you tracking for free!
Well my most recent trade in was excepted except my Silent Hill Experience was rejected... putting me under the $60 total trade in.

The reason it was rejected was because of "missing package item". I can only assume they meant a missing manual. But I don't recall UMD movies having manuals, as the only thing it came with was a UMD ad card. Granted, I bought it used at Gamestop. But a quick search online shows me nothing about whether or not it actually has a manual as many people are selling their "new" copies without a manual for some reason.

Could someone enlighten me as to whether or not it really comes with a manual? Because if not, I definitely want to call Amazon and complain.
I purchased mine new awhile back and sent it in a few weeks ago (remember, I posted about the $15 trade-in) and it had no inserts...just case and disc...so I'd say you got shafted.

Can you arrange a pickup of the package at your house? You can do that, can't you? Otherwise this UPS option would be a pain, and media mail hasn't taken *that* long for me anyway on the East coast. I do like the idea of free tracking, though.

Looks like you can:

https://wwwapps.ups.com/pickup/schedule?loc=en_US&WT.svl=PNRO_L1

Has an option to say you have pre printed labels and lists UPS Ground as an available service for pick up.
FINALLY received my 50% off code. To my surprise the exp date is Dec 31st. NOT Aug 31st. I called in twice to customer service to make sure it wasn't a mistake. Gotta love Amazon! Make an offer if interested
Nice. That gives me more time to figure out what to use my code on. I still have 3 $75 off console coupons that I'm sitting on with only a few weeks to go.

Alright thanks for the response. I thought my post would've been lost amongst this new UPS talk lol.

I was afraid this UMD movie business would be risky since they generally don't come with manuals. I'll call amazon and see what they'll do.
How long is it taking most people to get the promo code after Amazon receives their trade in credit?

They received my games and gave me my credit on Saturday, normally I get the promo code from them no more than 2 days later.

Read recent messages! Lately it looks like closer to 10 days then to 2, for getting your coupon. i've got orders from the 5th and 6th and no coupon for either yet.

Same here
My package was accepted on the 7th, and still no coupon yet.

It has been 8 days for me as well - no coupon code yet.
I see it's been covered - but yeah, except for one post a few pages back that claims otherwise, it seems no one has gotten a code since about the middle of last week. I now have 5 packages accepted that I have not gotten codes for - ranging from last Friday though today.
For Nintendo DS games if I send the game + manual but no box ok? I know it says YMMV, but based on anyone's experience here are the odds good they will be accepted?
Well, I had one rejected for a missing manual. I'd think a missing case would be worse and much more reason for rejection than a missing manual, so I'd be careful there.
Also, quick question, do I just submit 1 FFVII, then later change the quantity afterwards? I haven't use the trade-in for awhile, and i forget. Thanks!
Don't think this got answered, but yes - add 1, then update later. Though if you really have a bunch of them you might as well submit mutliple orders and then just change them to quantity of 2 later (to get the most $30 coupons). Also, though, this being the DOTD it probably wouldn't hurt just to submit 2 right away (unlike with regular games where you always want to do just 1 at first so the value doesn't drop for others by submitting too many).

Damn, up $1 from the trade I just had accepted...

As for this whole UPS thing, can you go with that option when you edit and resubmit? I just packed up 3 boxes last night and have a few more to do from the Endless Ocean/Star Wars Lightsaber Duels trades from last week. It would be nice to upgrade those now!

I'm not sure if I"m the only one, but I'm truly curious how much you've spent flipping between GS and Amazon since your first submission for an Amazon trade-in. Hahaha, anyone else curious?

another good thing is i no longer have to write my return addy on the label.. but its going to be hard to see a benefit on delivery quickness because my packages have been getting there in 2-3 days with media mail.. Im going to ship a package today using ups.. it says my local pickup is 7:30 pm so maybe it can get there by tomorrow : )

After waiting two weeks now for a package to just get there, I will be using UPS all the way. Media Fail just doesn't cut it.

Maybe later, when I'm all done I'll add everything up. Due to the lack of good DotDs and a good GS coupon I am done, for now - but I'm hoping things pick up again with a new GS coupon.

Let's just say for the most part I have been pretty successful converting a good chunk of my GS credit to Amazon which was the goal. I have that one submission still in limbo (still "Processing" since Saturday) and of course the lack of $30 codes is pretty disturbing as it was my plan to spend some of that Amazon credit using those codes. But even without that it would be worth having the credit there since it can be used on so many other things (I just won't be preordering a bunch of games if I don't get the codes). I have about 5 or 6 more to send in and then I'm pretty much done unless there is a great opportunity or the next Amazon coupon is too good to pass up (though I'm expecting it to suck).
After waiting two weeks now for a package to just get there, I will be using UPS all the way. Media Fail just doesn't cut it.
Yeah, like I said above, I'm pretty much set for now. Who knows when I'll be able to take advantage of the UPS label but it would be nice to try. Already this 1-2 weeks shipping thing has cost me a ton of missed Gold Box preorder opportunities because had my stuff mailed 1-2 weeks back gotten there sooner I would have had $30 codes for them from early last week when they were generating them within 2 days.

On an unrelated note, they seem to have fixed the problem of submissions showing "Ship deadline has passed" the day before the actual shipping deadline. Right now I can still edit/resubmit a trade that was due to be shipped by today. So that's a minor improvement at least.

After being on the phone with Amazon for over 30 minutes, they decided to credit me the original TIV for Silent Hill Experience but will not give me the promotional $30 code.

What they told me was that the "third party merchant" can reject anything for any reason and Amazon can't do anything about it. Even if everything was in working order and complete, the merchant can still do whatever they want. I told them that this was a breach of their policy and that they cannot just reject something because they don't know what the contents of the game actually includes.

Silent Hill Experience is the only UMD movie I see available for trade in on Amazon. UMD movies don't come with manuals so NorAm probably rejected it simply because they thought that it was missing a manual that comes with all PSP games. I told the Amazon rep that the rejection was out of a mistake because the merchant didn't know that it shouldn't have come with a manual since they are too used to only accepting PSP games and not PSP movies.

So at the end of the grueling 30 minute + phone marathon and being put on hold 5 separate times, I got my trade in credit, but not the $30 coupon code. I mentioned to the Amazon rep that there have been similar complaints towards the merchant online but he simply said there was nothing Amazon can do about it.

Case in point: NorAm can reject anything they want with no penalty to them. They can reject a complete game in perfect mint condition if they want and Amazon can't do a thing.

Wow, that gives pause. How can amazon nit have a say in the matter? Without amazon, NorAm is nothing. Seems like this can only hurt amazon, not NorAm so much, so you'd think they'd care.

Wasn't there a CAG who claimed to have gotten like 10 of these Silent Hill UMDs to send in? I wonder whatever happened with his trade?
Wasn't there a CAG who claimed to have gotten like 10 of these Silent Hill UMDs to send in? I wonder whatever happened with his trade?
Hahah, he canceled it, as he too was victim of the infamous gutted umd/game practice.

I just used UPS to send stuff in, so I can let you guys know how it all goes. This is my first time doing a trade-in with Amazon, though, so I can't exactly compare my experience to USPS. Still, I'll let you guys know.

ETA: I didn't have to do anything special to qualify for the $30 promo code, correct? My TIV was $80.50, and I guess I assumed that the code would be sent automatically with no need to "apply" for it.

Only 3 Things really: 1) You must SUCCESSFULLY receive a minimum of $60 credit for your order 2) Send in an order no more than 7 days after your submission of said order 3) Items must contain original packaging materials (manuals and cases) and discs must be in great to fair condition

Thanks. I thought that was all I needed to do, and it should be no problem so long as my games don't get rejected for no reason (I take great care of my games), but thought I'd double-check.

I'll post updates about how UPS goes.

Mike, as long as they accept everything, you should get the code.

I'm currently waiting for a coupon myself. With a $5 off code I got from Sqeenix, the ECA discount and the $30 coupon, I should get Dissidia for free. It also shows up in my gold box about once a week right now. Either that or I'll use it on Persona.

These Amazon Trade-In Deals will vastly increase the number of new games I get each year. The CAG in me averages about $20 per game these days and I was only buying 1-2 games at release per year.

Check out the Buy GH5 get GH Van Halen for free thread. If I read the footprint correctly, it seems that we can buy it anywhere, not GS exclusive.

That GH5 can be a good buy with $30 coupon, since we can use ECA, get $5 MP3 credit, and also $10 coupon for future video games.

Converse answered the TIV calculations here

Thank you very much converse, its very helpful to know which items had the biggest TIV fluctuations. I think you may have missed Saints Row 2 in your latest update. Its been all over the place.

I think im going to try http://agc.gazelle.com/ for some more amazon credit flips i found today...

Amazon vs Gazelle TIV

:360: Saints Row 2 $8 vs $15
:ps3: Saints Row 2 $9 vs $16

Here's another great thing. It only takes off $1 each for a missing coverart or manual. It will deduct $1-2 for missing case or it being in 'Good' condition instead of 'Perfect'. Something else to consider just in case you make a trip and don't want to waste it. I'll let ya guys know how it goes. PLEASE READ THEIR SITE FOR GENERAL QUESTIONS. Im not an FAQ ;)

Edit: Looks like they give an extra 5% for Amazon gift cards. Translation...if you submit $100 worth of Trade Value, you will receive an Amazon gift card for $105.

Final Fantasy VII (greatest hits) for $40 seemed like a great deal! Sadly I can't find any decent flips in my area to fill in the last $9. I knew this place downtown that had FFVII for $35, so I thought that would be a good solution, however when I got there the GH version was $89.99?! Anyways, might end up buying Re: Chain of Memories new to make this deal.

i have a question for those of you who have multiple amazon accounts(probably for the 50% deal). are you able to used the same credit card on multiple accounts?

yeah.

Just got a tweet from amazongames:

"amazongames: Video Game Trade-In Announcement! Trade in with our new free UPS option and get your Amazon.com Gift Card faster"

amazon comes through again!!!

C'mon, Amazon, let loose with the damn codes already! :bomb:

I think I am going to go for the GH5 + free GH Van Halen combo if I get the multiple codes they owe me.

And I won't even wait for Gold Box on that one:

GH5 $59.99
- $5.99 for ECA
- $30 for promo code
= $24 and you get all the following bonuses:
1) Mail in for free GH Van Halen (not a huge fan but for this cheap I'll get it)
2) $10 video game promo code to use later
3) 5 MP3 downloads.

Sold! (Assuming I get a damn coupon to use)

I'm sure their agreements with UPS net them super cheap rates per package. Bottom line, in my eyes, is that the Amazon folks listened to all our complaining about media mail and went out of their way to make it better for us. Probably even cut into their profits a bit for us.

Amazon does what it can to keep gamers happy. This sort of
thing is why we keep voting them #1 online games retailer, and why I do almost all of my game shopping with them anymore.

Yep, here are all the promos with GH5:

Limited Time Bonus Offer
Buy Guitar Hero 5 and get the unreleased Guitar Hero Van Halen game (up to $60 MSRP). Valid only in September. Offer expires 10/01/09. Instructions on how to redeem will be included in the game.

Pre-order Price Guarantee! Order now and if the Amazon.com price decreases between your order time and the end of the day of the release date, you'll receive the lowest price. Here's how (restrictions apply)

Get $5 worth of MP3 downloads from Amazon MP3 when your order ships. Here's how (restrictions apply)
Amazon.com-Exclusive Order Bonus
Order "Guitar Hero 5" and receive a $5 Amazon mp3 credit good toward the music tracks from the game. Redemption instructions will be e-mailed within 10 business days after your order has shipped. Must be sold and shipped by Amazon.com to be eligible. Check out the track list

Get a $10 Video Games Credit
Order Guitar Hero 5 and get $10 off a future video game purchase. The promotional code will be placed directly into your Amazon.com account within 2 business days after the product ships. Offer valid for a limited time and only when shipped and sold by Amazon.com. This offer will be extended to all existing pre-orders. Amazon reserves the right to change or terminate this promotion at any time.

Since the $10 promo says "Amazon reserves the right to change or terminate this promotion at any time" I really want at least one of the codes they own me ASAP!

Interesting, the MP3 promo in this case is for tracks from the game. Don't you get any 5 mp3 downloads of your choice with other game purchases? That seems odd but I'm sure there are 5 things I'd want from there. Whenever we get these games my kids want a few of the songs from them anyway for their iPods.

Yes, just set up a second account to my aunt's house for a second $30 code. Question though can I transfer the funds of one account as a "gift card" to a second one?

Just make sure to check both sites. I've been quoted $22 for Battlestations Pacific at Amazon, but Gazelle was only offering $9 which is less than half.
After being on the phone with Amazon for over 30 minutes, they decided to credit me the original TIV for Silent Hill Experience but will not give me the promotional $30 code.

That sucks. It was discussed on here a while back and people talked about how most umds have no manuals, like you mentioned. I don't remember if they traded them in or not or what happened. It may have been in the Amazon thread before this one.
Yes, just set up a second account to my aunt's house for a second $30 code. Question though can I transfer the funds of one account as a "gift card" to a second one?
Note, many people have been able to get multiple $30 codes on 1 account, the actual amazon description seems to be ymmv regarding that.
Converse answered the TIV calculations here

Thank you very much converse, its very helpful to know which items had the biggest TIV fluctuations. I think you may have missed Saints Row 2 in your latest update. Its been all over the place.
Ya, I posted before I saw that. I guess you can copy+paste the lists on that other site into Excel.

Man, they better not be going all "one per household" on us now. That would really suck for us West Coasters because they let people close to MA get 10+ coupon codes but since ours take so much longer to get there we're stuck in limbo.

But I think even people who have yet to get a code are not getting them either, so that's probably not it anyway.

Just to be sure I checked the terms and they haven't changed. While the vague "Limit one discount per household, per qualifying order." is still there, the main part of the deal simply says "Limit one discount per qualifying order.". That only means you don't get more than 1 code on a single submission even if you go over $120. The household thing makes no sense as the second part says it is "per qualifying order". So that means each household's qualifying orders should get codes - one per order...

I'm still waiting for my first $30 coupon for the order that was accepted on Friday. I wish they had it together, New SMB Wii is in my Gold Box.

Oh, man, I'd be pissed as that was my number 1 target for the gold box + coupon combo. As much as that sucks for you I'm glad to see it is a system-wide thing, though. So hopefully the floodgates will open here soon ;).

You know, I don't know what the hell happened to my Gold Box but two days in a row now I have a bunch of computer and office supplies. Yesterday I had ball point pens for crying out loud. I just checked and it has changed. Now I have CD labels, a Scotch thermal laminator, college-ruled notebooks, Canon photo paper, and erasers :bomb:. WTF!? I have not made any recent purchases of that type at all. All I've bought the last few months is video games. I also have a few DVDs and Blu-Rays (Coraline, Quantum of Solace, etc).

I had all video games 2 and 3 days ago and now it's gone to crap. Oh well, at least I'm not missing anything by not having codes now.
