Hey! My second visit to the club. One more and I'm eligible for pension, right?

Died earlier this week. While the first time (March of last year) was due to a fairly rare problem of the graphics card slowly dying, this time I got the good old 3 red rings. Coffin should be here today (edit - it didn't come when I posted this, and it's still not here).

What's really screwy is that my PC crashed at the exact same time - came home, turned on the PC, reached over and turned on the 360. My PC was screwed and I needed to do a full repair with the boot disc. Fortunately that worked so I didn't lose anything. So I get that going, then I look over and notice there is nothing displayed on my widescreen monitor. Look down, and I'm staring into the great brown red eye.

fucking LOUSY day, it was.

so far mine died on june 22nd
i got my box and mailed it out on june 28
they got it july 5
and i am told to expect it the last week of july

ups sucks and i am sad

Mine died on like the same day, and I shipped out the box on the same day too. Though they got mine on the 3rd.

yea mine got to Dallas Ft Worth on like the 1st, but it took it till the 5th to get it to the msoft repair center in texas

Well unit #2 finally died on me - same fact as doubledown. Just talked to support - they quoted 4-6 weeks for repair as opposed to 10-14 days when my first unit died around the same time last year. Complete bullshit

Well, at least I am covered by this new 3 year warranty thing so they aren't charging me to get fucked over!

Hopefully I can get it to come back to life long enough to download whatever free content Bungie is releasing for today only.

Can you imagine how flooded the repair centers are right now. I mean all those people with dead 360's are now covered and trying to get theirs repaired also.

Man why couldn't mine die a month earlier. I would've been covered by Gamecrazy's 90 day warranty.

This is the 2nd 360 that has had 3 red lights of death and it happened yesterday which was my birthday!!! YAY!!!! Thanks Microsoft!!!!! Hope my coffin comes soon...

They have to red-ring blink "Happy Birthday" to you since it's not in the public domain and would cost too much to sing.

Joking aside, that sucks. Hope you didn't get any games or anything for it.
My launch system just gave me the red ring wink.
Never had a single problem before and now it's dead.
Ouch, Cheapy... Seriously, this seems to be even bigger than I imagined - so many CAG's with problems.

As to the person who asked about the failure rates of the Elite - I have no idea. Mine is still going strong after all of 2 months ;). I don't think we'll know anything for sure about the reliability of the Elite until NEXT summer.

It's about time the D joined the group!

So do you have to send it to the US, or is there a repair center in Japan?

Damn that sucks, Cheapy. I guess you're going to have to send it to your folks and they'll have to send it in for you. 6-8 weeks without an Xbox would be rough. I guess you have the motivation to go out and buy a Japanese 360 now, don't you?

If you buy one, you might double the Japanese sales figures for July!
So do you have to send it to the US, or is there a repair center in Japan?
There is a repair center in Japan, but he can't use it because his warranty is through the US on his 360. It's the same with other major console companies. For example if you import a cool navy blue DS from Japan, there's no warranty in the USA.

Poor Cheapy - let us know how the support saga goes.

Don't forget to listen to Cagcast #82, where Wombat and CheapyD both get to bitch about their broken 360s. All those "Cheapy is a Microsoft Fanboy" listeners make sure to tune in !!

4-6 weeks. screw M$

I still can't believe how many of these things shit out. I really wish we could see the failure rate statistics. I am guessing the failure rate to be around 30% or so. That is just unacceptable. But when the piece of shit works its great so we just have to learn to deal with it I guess.

I don't think we'll ever know the real failure rate, since store employee estimates are biased by those which crap out early on (during the store return period, but not the manufacturer warranty), and forum estimates only consist of those gamers who peruse forums (which omits those consoles which die off for the more casual gamer).

Unless we see something from MS, which we never will, then we're only left making educated guesses with incomplete data.

It's 100% for me: A Launch 360 that shit the bed in April, and a refub that croaked in June. Been without since June 8. Long Story, but finally I was passed to the plant manager of the McAllen Repair Center. He said due to the Texas flooding and higher than normal repair activity is the cause for the delay...:bs:

Tonight is 3 days that they told me that I would have a tracking number on a NEW console they were going to send me...like I said long story...I bet $100 that they still don't know when.

We can say it is any number we want. I can say it is 150%, but that doesn't make it true.

Let's consider it this way: if it is 33%, then roughly 3.5 million Xbox 360 systems have gone back to MS since launch. Over the 591 days since launch, a 33% failure rate translates into ~5,922 systems being sent back to MS for repair *every day*. In my opinion, that's surely a far higher estimate than is really being sent it. That would make it unsustainable to repair and return 360 consoles in a 2-3 week timespan.

It's far higher than the acceptable 1-2%, that is for certain. What the real percentage is is beyond our estimates.

My core system I purchased in September '06 red ringed on Saturday and I took it back to EB and traded it out for a supposedly M$ refurbished one and another warranty through them.
so will it really take 4-6 weeks, can anyone confirm this.
To give you a bit of an example to go on, my entire process from call to delivery was June 2nd to June 30th. Exactly 4 weeks. This included me getting a refurb, not my same console back.

This was prior to the 3 year announcement, so if they come back in 4 weeks now you will be lucky.

Well, #2 is on it's way back to Texas. This was the POS they sent me as a replacement that only read 2/3 of my games and recognized 0 BC games. Some of the 360 games brought up a message saying to "Insert into a 360 console to play." ???WTF???

Ok I think mine is breaking (again). First off when I play my Seinfeld DVDs (they are mint condition), about every other episode it stops for about 20 seconds and says ATTEMPTING TO READ media then I have to press FF and then it starts again. Also playing Crackdown last week I got 2 DRE's. Then today on Guitar Hero, the beginning of the songs would skip for about 3 seconds then play normally. Does this mean my laser is going bad?

Just adding to the happyfun list. My 360 died about a month ago, same story as everyone else with the freezing and finally death. MS has been sitting on my console for three weeks now. I've decided to forget about the system and act like it's a surprise gift when it comes in the mail, then I'll excited. Hope I get my original system back with a heatsink at least, else it'll just happen again I'm sure.

I don't like this 4-6 weeks stuff. I should get my coffin tomorrow to ship it to MS. They said they would expedite mine, since it's the 3rd time shipping it back, but I highly doubt that.

I will bitch until they give me SOMETHING for free though.

You get a free month of live  . They should include Kameo, or a launch title

40 mins later I now have a coffin coming for my 360.

Hopefully the return time is more of the 4 weeks and less of the 6 weeks.

Its usually 2 weeks turnaround total, at least it was a month ago for my cousin.

It sure seems there are a lot more breakdowns in Summer time. More evidence it's heat related.

Mine just crapped out on the 4th of July. Games freezing followed by the boot up screen freezing and eventually the three red lights.

I called them on the 5th and still don't have the box to retun it to Microsoft. I'm just hoping that I'll get the replacement back by the time Madden '08 comes out, although I'm sure that after this announcement, every busted Xbox 360 ever sold is going back which means I'll be lucky to get it back by the time Halo 3 comes out...

The only bright side is I now I have time to play the 30 or so original Xbox games that I had to have at the time but yet have never found time to play.

Hi guys. I'm joining the group. While my 360 isnt totally broken, the ethernet port doesnt work anymore .. meaning I cant connect to live. Meaning my 360 is completely worthless to me now as thats all I used it for. I spent 2 hours on the phone with customer service for them to finally confirm what I already knew (that the ehternet port is broken) and to fix it will cost me $100. So now I dont know if I want to get it repaired or just get a new one (and possibly wait until these supposed new chipset 360s come out).

Another happy customer thanks to the fantastic all curing 3 year red ring warranty

Shit... all this talk of 4-6 week turnaround has me concerned. With the replacement I got (that's being shipped back already), they sent it out the same day my old unit arrived to them.
Jesus I can't believe it crapped out on me.
Really?

I mean, really?

I kinda feel left out: my 360 died, but it only froze up after 5 minutes of play (no matter the game). I never had the red rings. It's like a rite of passage I missed out on.

I've been playing a lot of XBox lately, stuff I never went through like Phantom Dust and MK Armageddon. Hope to get into Psychonauts before too long as well.

 I guess it's one of those "oh it will never happen to me" types of things.

I'm with you. My coffin should be here tomorrow then I will start to place phone calls. Somthing more than this 1 month of live crap. They were giving away games a couple of months ago. (Kameo, PGR3, fight night and Perfect Dark) The only problem is everytime I call I get "over seas" and they could careless. I am sure they find it comical and to get anything out of them is like pulling teeth. I wish I new how to get ahold of someone state side here and have a actual conversation.

I just hope I don't get a refurbed piece of junk that was kicked around.

Right now I'm sorta wishing I had gotten the red rings of death .. at least then my system would be fixed for free. Man do I miss Xbox Live.

Coudln't you have lied and said it was a red ring problem? :p

what if you caused a red ring of death?
Do they send you an email or anything when they ship the repaired system back?
they're supposed to but they never did for me.
Do they send you an email or anything when they ship the repaired system back?
nope. But if you keep track of your system on the service site you can sorta get an idea of when they do it. About a week after they changed my serial number on the site I got the refurb.

if I had a problem out of the warranty regulations I think i'd take a blowdryer to the back and hope it redringed.
