I called MS for the coffin on 7/31, coffin arrived on 8/6. MS received the coffin on 8/9. Got an email yesterday (8/19) saying my console has been shipped, and I noticed that it has a different serial #. Here I am thinking it would take some 4 weeks to get it back and they took care of business in 2 weeks.

WOW I never thought this would happen to me! I just turned on my box to go play some Hexic 2 and all of the sudden it goes DUT DUT DUT all loud and all these crazy lines go through the TV and I thought hmmmmmmm. I turn it back on and 4 red rings! wow!
4 red rings? Doesn't that just mean the AV cable isn't in all the way?
Gosh I hope so that would be a great misatake on my part.

I'm going to call and complain when I get back from work. It's been 10 days of my Xbox listed as delivered with no response. I'm going to demand they fast track my shit since I have a system still under warranty. It's not some out-of-warranty mercy repair. They've got to show some fucking priority with customers.

quick question, i'm about to send back my coffin, the instructions say to place the shipping label directly over the one that was on the box already, but the original label is longer than the one they gave me to ship it back and there is also an additional sticker further down with my address on it. should i peel off the stuff that isn't covered up by the new label?

The bottom of the original label has the bar code that UPS scans is it goes through their shipping process and contains the tracking number. You can copy that number down and enter it at ups.com to check the shipment of your box. Just place your new shipping label above where the address is on the original label. As for other labels, if it is just a small label somewhere else on the box that just has your address on it, I would go ahead and peel that off, but leave the original label as it is.

I got my Xbox 360 back today. It was built on August 05, 2007 according to the registration sticker on the back of the console but I don't think it is brand new. On my original 360, the registration info was "tattooed" onto the physical console. On this one, it seems like the registration info was printed onto a sticker and taped onto the 360 so it is probably an old unit that was modified with the new heatsink on August 5.

I also got a one month Live card and what seems to be a new faceplate since it still has the plastic over the IR port. I sent my 360 without a faceplate so it looks like they just give out brand new spares.

You could remove everything if you want as long as the new label is shown. I just removed the extra sticker.

My zero hour launch 360 just died on me. My first xbox died when I was playing forza. My 360 died while I was playing forza 2. That game is cursed for me.

my second refurbished 360 broke last tuesday (8/14) i got the empty box today (8/20) and shipped it out today.

over the weekend i bought a PS3 80GB with motorstorm at bestbuy. i didnt open it yet, but there is an empty spot in my cabinet and i have no video games to play right now. my HDTV has one HDMI port. i wonder which company will use that port.

i cant afford both consoles. so basically if i dont get it back in like a week, im just going to break open that PS3 and hook it up to the HDMI port and go bonkers. when the refurb comes back im just going to ebay it and buy some ps3 games with the money. if i get my 360 back in a week and it has an HDMI port and upgraded heatsinks, then i will return the PS3.

its all up to you now, microsoft.

They don't care. The main problem is the people you deal with are 9 to 5ers (at least until they switch the phones over to the outsource people that can't speak English for shit). That's the beauty of major corporations like this: make it so the customer's complaints rarely make it beyond the poor bastard working the phones and, if they do, will be stopped the next level up with the supervisor.

You will not get the HDMI port if the one you sent in didn't have one, and the heatsink upgrades are not a mandatory process (they probably flip a coin to decide which ones get it).

I'd file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. The Xbox division of Microsoft is listed with them.

I really wonder if we won't be forced to re-buy 360s down the road. I mean, say they really have figured out what was wrong with their manufacturing and new boxes will not get the RROD, unless it is solved purely by adding the extra heatsink I can't imagine that the refurbishing process involves any major surgery being done to the motherboards of all the dead units we send in.

Has anyone had their extra heatsinked 360 RROD again or heard of anyone else who has?

I think all refurbished units include the heatsink. I just got mine back today and it has the new heatsink. If anyone wants to know how, just use this tutorial:

I took a photo of mine and it definitely has it.

Now im very, VERY pissed off.

Bioshock is out. halo 3 comes out in 4-5 weeks. etc etc etc. and now im on my 2nd console which wont even fucking read the games anymore (sound familiar, eh?) . This is ridiculous, Im calling them and letting them have it. They need to be doing this overnight shipping. We were the first batch buyers (at least I was) and we made what this console is today, the least they could fucking do is send us some working consoles that dont die in 5 DAYS!!!!!

Not all of them. Some people got refurbs without the heatsink. That might have been people getting replacements from the backstock of refurbs Microsoft didn't want to re-repair.

Hey, here's a couple of questions:

Since I exchanged my broken 360 for a new one at Target, is there anything I need to do via data on my hard drive, or will it be okay? I have a second account, a Japanese account, but I used it once.

Is it concerning that this new 360 WITH HDMI port runs hotter than my old 360?
Shrike: Had I read this thread before calling MS for my own coffin, I would have taken yours! :)
I'll keep it on standby for you. :D

i was given an "agent" from escalations. i have a reference # and an extension. poor guy has a voicemailbox. i will leave him a message every day until i get my 360 back. i gave him the tracking # for my return box on its way back to TX. so they better be prepared when it gets to the factory to do what they have to do.

i wont accept 3 day. overnight it to me and i want a free controller or something.

its getting very tempting to open up that ps3

I got this in an email tonight:

This e-mail is to let you know that we have received your request for service. However as of today, we have not received your Xbox console and would like to verify that you wish to continue with the service.

Jesus, I shipped it the day after I got the coffin. I hope they are this rushed when they get it tomorrow.

Wow, you can escalate a claim? I'm doing that tomorrow if yet another day goes by without that shit getting fixed. Waiting is one thing, but being left hanging with no e-mail to even indicate they've looked at the system is a joke, especially after 10 days since it was delivered to them.

In the month they had my #2 (Dead on arrival) console, I never received an email. That's one reason I called them every 2-3 days.

Thanks! :D

Has anyone else sent an Elite in for repair yet? I'm curious if they are replacing them with new or refurbished units.

Can someone please describe exactly what happened when you called MS?

What kind of info did they ask of you?
Did you have to prove when you got the console in any way?
Did they have your Live account info or anything?

Please hook a CAG up with some intimate knowledge of the proceedings, please.

ALRIGHT guys I need some help.

So yesterday I am playing Hexic 2 and everything is going great.

about 30 seconds later it goes JEEEEEZZZ JEEEEEZIT and my screen freezes and looks all wonky

I reset the system about 20 seconds later same freezing screen

I reset the system and as it boots up i get FOUR RINGS yes Four Rings

What in the hell is going on here? I have heard that this isn't the normal 3 RROD but I can't seem to get this thing to reboot. I have tried:

1. Unplugging all cables and replugging them in.
2. Checking the AV cable and wiping it clean and making sure it is FIRMLY inserted into it's plasticie love hole.
3. Try plugging in a different AV cable completely (VGA).
4. Try a different power supply, even though mine is booting up green.
5. opening the CD tray and slowly fingering the hole....

Bah hellp.

They ask you for your name, address, phone, and email if you didn't register your 360. If you have registered it, they will still ask you the above information to verify.

You only have to prove when you got it if the 360 you purchased is an old model. For example, suppose I buy a 360 today, the one year warranty should last till August 2008. But if the 360 was old stock and built January 2007, according to MS the warranty would end January 2008. But if you prove that you purchased it in August 2007 by showing the receipt, the warranty would last till August.

They never asked me for my Live info.

Much appreciated Kendro. Another question:

How does one register one's 360?
How can I tell if a 360 has been registered?

Thanks!

You can register it online or by phone. If you bought a used 360, try registering it online and if you can't, that means it has already been registered. Or you can just call 1-800-4MY-XBOX.

Okay so when I try to register it and it doesn't throw up an error message, that means I'm good to go then.

Sweet.

I'm going to buy this used Elite and I want to make sure they guy didn't basically screw me out of the warranty process, in the unlikely scenario I would need it.

Thanks for all your help.
Unlikely??? Are you joking, or did you miss the last 90+ pages in this thread? I now personally know 9 friends (not counting CAGs or XBL friends) that have purchased 360's. Only 3 have not had theirs fail. One of them just sent in his 4th, which was a refurb that he's only had about two weeks. I love my 360, but the hardware is total crap. It's unlikely that you'll buy one that won't fail at this point. Everyone seems to think the Falcon will make everything better, but I don't have that much blind faith in MS at this point. We'll wait and see...

Well according to MRCUR from Xbox.com anything after April this year should be fairly red ring proof. This 360 is a lot 725 which puts it squarely in the safe zone. So yeah, it's unlikley I will get RR'd.

Well... I join the sorry ranks as of thirty some minutes ago.

Three red rings. I restarted the system. Red rings again. I unplugged it, tried again. Went through the RROD xbox.com suggestions of checking this and that. TRIED to get it to boot for over thirty minutes.

This is the first time in over a month that I have /turned on/ my 360, so I'm... well...

Upset. Upset is a good kid friendly word to use.

I was planning on trying out the Bioshock demo, and playing some used original Xbox games.

Such is life. My coffin is on its way.

Edited to add:

Great. I left it plugged in for a while, and just tried starting it up on a lark. Success!

I don't trust it however, and there is no way I'm even going to get lulled into playing games on it again.
So my question is, if I send it back to Microsoft and it doesn't immediately give them the RROD, what happens?

Apparently they shipped mine back already. I called and they gave me a different tracking number. But the number they gave me doesn't work. And I never got any e-mail confirmation that it was repaired and to expect it back. I wish those bozos would have some consistency with their process. It seems like no two people have the same return experience.

Well I received a email sunday afternoon with a tracking number saying it was on the way back to me. The xbox service website was updated with a new serial number. However as of late tuesday night hte tracking number still isn't working. I plan on giving it another day and if the tracking number doesn't work at least I will give them a call...

same here
hopefully a quick turn around, i want to play my gamezz

after reading some of this thread, it convinced me to "splurge" on an extra warranty from worstbuy when i went to grab my copy of bioshock. it was only 80 for my elite, but this means I should be worry free for 2 years. No waiting for the coffin :D

usually i say those warranties are a waste of money but we wont know if the latest batch of systems is reliable for several months yet, so good choice!

Get it right, it's called 'Best Buy it somewhere else' :D

My tracking number is working now. Took them awhile to actually get the console out the door. Received the email sunday from microsoft with the tracking number. I figured it wouldn't be picked up until monday morning because of ups schedule, however it acutallly did not depart from the repair center until tuesday night at 7 pm. So about 55-60 hours between getting the email from microsoft saying it was on the way and the actually departure from the repair center...

Ditto.

Okay, out of the blue, the damn thing is working again.

Not sure what to do at this point. I just know it is going to do what it did last night at some point: refuse to give anything but the RROD for an entire night.

My return box is already on its way. What happens if I send it in, and Microsoft 'tests' it and it boots? Do they just send it right back to me, or do they actually stress test it for a while to see if it throws the error again?
If you go back a page or two, you can see my post abot my long ordeal.

After speaking to a number of CSRs who told me I could not get mine repaired for free, I figured I had nothing else to lose, so I opened mine up, replaced the thermal compound with Arctic Silver 5 and tried the heat gun trick). Still didn't work. I saw this thread and noticed that people were getting the fee waived. I called in again, got the fee wavied, sent in the box and got it back, untouched, a week later.

Moral of the story, they're not joking when they say that they refuse opened consoles.
They fixed my launch console, even with the broken seal, for free! But then again, I didn't actually "do" anything after I removed the sticker and opened the box (I chickened out because I thought I would do more bad than good)
