Anyone know when Digital River started collecting sales tax? I just attempted to place a mock order at the Capcom Store and noticed they were charging sales tax.

They don't have a presence in my state (Maine) and they weren't even charging the correct tax rate (they charged 5.94%; sales tax is 5.5% here).

Edit: Nevermind; sales tax % is right if you calculate 5.5% on the amount and shipping costs (not sure if anywhere else charges sales tax on S/H)

Am I missing something? Does anyone know if other DR stores are doing the same thing?
I know that DR has always charged me sales tax. I assume that they have a presence in CA where I live, but I never looked into it.

I think I read in an Amazon tax notice one year some states have passed laws saying if a company ships to the their state the company has to collect sales tax for sales to that state. Not sure how well they can enforce that....

Got an email update that said it was delayed (possibly weather), but should be here by Tuesday. Just glad it didn't get cancelled at this point honestly.
Agreed, it arrived safe & sound today.

Also if anyone is still looking for the collector's edition of the Majora's Mask guide try checking your local Barnes & Noble. I searched their website via the store pickup option and got it today :)

Kind of pissed about the condition my premium edition of The Order 1886 came in today. Shipping box came in better condition than what was inside; the outer box had several small dents in it and the print was removed in those areas and what probably ruined my day was when I removed the outer box and noticed the top part where you open it had a rip in it before I had even got to opening that box. Guessing that someone got frustrated when packing it up wherever it was manufactured or they were just very careless >_

This seller on eBay has sold over 40 Monster Hunter 4 Collector's Editions with the Amazon Pin, and has more available. Also, looking at the first page of his feedback page, he has sold more than 8 Majora's Mask Limited Editions which he most likely bought from Amazon. This is why most of us true collectors can't ever seem to get these LEs on Amazon because of Amazon allowing scalpers to buy up their entire inventory. It's crazy how many of these MH CEs this seller was able to buy from Amazon.

Probably not going to bother sending it back over this and just enjoy the statue and not display the box with it like I usually do. Anyone else receive theirs in a similar condition?

I picked mine up at best buy and the box was fine. the steelbook is scratched and opens poorly and the fence piece of the statue had a prong bent out of shape so I couldn't fit it in. Best buy as a chain had access to no more so I couldn't even exchange it. Heat gunned the fence piece back to shape so it fits (and its actually a really nice statue) but im def going to call playstation consumer support to see if theyvcan do anything. A friend of mine also got his with the fence piece kinda borked so it seems they were just kinda poorly made. the actual statue however seems super high quality so im happy about that.

the fence piece of my statue also doesn't fit, I haven't found a way to put it in nicely yet, it's just barely hanging there for now...

And it looks like he is gutting some to sell skull kid separately from game. Did amazon really have no limit, or is he some kind of wholesaler that would have supplied amazon with their "missing" stock that never arrived, or is he importing them from mexico?

Videogame wholesale is hard to get into. My first post on CAG was looking for wholesalers and no one helped :p. I think that was about 9 years ago. There was a company named navarre that took over (they also bought an Anime company- maybe funimation or aniplex) and it seems like they had a tight grip-like diamond distribution on the comic industry. I tried to "get in" 9 years ago and I didn't get very far.

Actually, it's not. The problem is that the wholesale pricing you are going to be offered on small quantities of product is pretty terrible. The last time I looked, for quantities under 20, the distributor to retailer pricing was roughly $53 on $60 games. When you add in time, business license fees, space leasing/storage, marketing, employee costs and every other expense of running a small business, even one on Ebay, there is really no margin to be had. In fact, I know a couple local game store owners who regularly buy stock from retailers when they have B2G1 sales or even use GCU on certain higher demand items because honestly the margin is better than they can get buying from a distributor. Frankly, the only way some of these flippers make a living is by preordering from retailers that allow no question returns or cancellations, selling only those items where they know massive margins can be made and moving product in and out with minimal storage or time on hand.

bojay's spot-on.  I used to own and operate a couple game stores and the margin on new games is razor thin.  We almost exclusively focused on the used retro and collector market because of that.  The few new titles we carried were, just as bojay mentioned, stuff we had picked up on clearance or deep discount at normal retailers.

Before that, back in undergrad (early 2000s) I worked at Best Buy.  Back then the employee discount program was a flat 6% over their cost on anything in the store.  You pretty quickly could see that there was very minimal margin in game software (and consoles).  Our discount ended up being about 10% off on game purchases (i.e. far worse than what GCU is now), and that's at Best Buy's volume... back when they were still churning out revenue hand over fist.

I guess I should have written "get in good".

Navarre was 1,000 units minimum IIRC when I checked years ago. -That may have changed though. I remember because I used to sell Anime VHS and the quantities were crazy when I thought about getting back into it with DVDs/video games after the Anime crash. I also remember, I didn't have enough money to operate and meet their minimum numbers. I had a $10,000 threshold maximum that I allocated for myself for inventory. I know the wholesale used to be around $30 on a $50 game at that time because my friend worked at BB and they paid 10% above cost and games were about $35 each for him. (I can't find any of my paperwork though).

Navarre is a major distributor, but there are a number of smaller distributors that specialize in servicing small retailer accounts. In fact, you can order as few as one unit through the smaller distributors, although as I said, the margin is terrible. I can pretty definitely tell you that BB never got major release games at $30 unless it was a specific publisher promo. Even on the AAA titles, the margin for big box retailers is anywhere between 9% and 17%. Large retailers get other benefits like promo dollars for marketing, credits for unsold merchandise or price drops, etc...none of which small retailers get.

So I guess the answer should have been "Video game wholesaling used to be difficult to get into if you wanted decent margins", and now "It is easy to get into with razor thin margins." The point being, the reseller isn't getting these at wholesale.

probably someone stole a truckload and he is dumping them  :whistle2:

i think I'm going to cancel my MK X CE from BBY, its still not sold out and I'm not too hot on the statue.  It looks like its gonna be massively overproduced and easy to pick up on AWD down the road.

I don't understand how someone could manage that. Amazon cancels people who buy more than the alotted and will also cancel if bought over multiple accounts, using same IP, and other things. The person would need a ton of a different billing addresses to make that work.

Things with no limit I can understand, but I don't get how someone could get around the billing address, shipping address, account and IP limit.

Somewhere, I heard that GameStop didn't limit web-to-store pre-orders. If I were one of their "highly paid" managers, I might put in an order the second it was available. It would be difficult for corporate to trace this as all Credit Card data must be stored in an encrypted state or tokenized. ...and of course, Best Buy has OMS. Then, there was a local TRU employee who pre-ordered 40 Lucarios. This would be much easier than bribing employees at several stores.

I used to manage a GS, but that was long ago. I am sure the pay is still quite stellar ;)

You're blowing my mind right now that you think:

A. it isn't easily possible to track down purchases across a DB with just some basic queries

B. that tokenization or encryption has anything to do with tying an order number to a name, email, or any other personally identifiable information.

and last of all...

C. anyone at the corporate level gives the slightest crap if an employee is buying up stock and depriving customers. They don't care, not at all. The only people who do are at the store level and they are the ones who will catch someone and then fire them.

B. that tokenization or encryption has anything to do with tying an order number to a name, email, or any other personally identifiable information.
and last of all...
C. anyone at the corporate level gives the slightest crap if an employee is buying up stock and depriving customers. They don't care, not at all. The only people who do are at the store level and they are the ones who will catch someone and then fire them.
You don't have to be a jerk. I happen to be an EA and did not want to drill out the boring details. But you can be the expert if it makes you happy.

Not trying to be a jerk and I did come off rude so I apologize for being aggressive with you.

It's just once you get into a position where you work with people who are at the C level or even the exec VP or VP, you really start to understand that individual transactions mean nothing. Everything is aggregated, normalized, transformed, etc.

Update to my broken Skull Kid statue. Gamestop naturally couldn't get me another LE since they have no more. So I'm getting a giftcard in the mail with a full refund.  Was expecting only a partial, but hey not gonna argue with free money or anything.

Nintendo got back to me about it. They asked me to call. So I called. The guy on the phone had no idea what the Skull Kid figure was or what it came from and finally said they don't repair toys.

Any update from triforce for anyone? This is getting a tad ridiculous.
I just e-mailed Josh this morning for an update. Here is his reply:

We don’t have exact dates for the arrival of replacement items. Due to Chinese New Year, we expect them sometime in March. Once we receive them, we will be reaching out for shipping information to send replacements your way. If you have any questions and/or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me!
Thank you for your time.

Due to Chinese new year?  What the hell does that even mean?  Does nothing get done during Chinese new year?  Is this the first Chinese New Year ever so all the factories over there had no clue how to handle it?  In any case thanks for the info

China shuts down for 1-2 weeks every year for Chinese New Year. And by China, I mean pretty much all factories across the country. It's not going to change anytime soon.

Pretty much, yes. New Year in China has major, major supply chain implications for companies. Most Chinese companies close one to two weeks in advance of CNY and stay closed for one to two weeks afterward. Even once they officially start back up it often takes a whole for factories to return to full staffing and capacity. This happens every year.

Because of this, the months leading up to CNY have VERY heavy workloads a western companies who source their inventories in China load up in order to ensure that they have enough inventory to get them through the supply chain lag that occurs from February through March as a result of the CNY shut downs.

It doesn't shock me at all that an unplanned small batch order like this is taking a while.

That doesn't even take in to account the fact that all the ports on the West Coast here are backed up like a rush hour turnpike due to the dock worker strike that just ended. Who knows whether our ports will be caught up by the time the replacements do actually leave China.

so my shipping finally updated with tracking and it shows it being delivered tomorrow afternoon.

So my question is how many hours should it take me to beat the order 1886? hoping to be able to trade it in thursday before values drop

I beat it in the 8.5-9 hour range. I do plan on playing through it again so depending on how much you want to get out of it could be longer. If you're just trying to beat and sell consider like 9-10 hours max.

You can "rush" through it in 6-7 hours, but if you want to go for the platinum trophy, it will take you another 1-2 hours

Cool. I'll probably get it...eventually.
I agree with Ghost. I finished the game and platinum trophy in about 10 hours. It was a fun 10 hours and I don't regret it, but it definitely didn't live up to it's hype. Some of the chapters were purely cut-scenes. If I wouldn't have gotten in on the price mistake for the CE at Best Buy then I would have waited. I beat it and traded it in to Best Buy on Saturday for $44. My total was $7 for the "rental" and I got to keep all the CE stuff. Will pick it up again for my collection when it hits $19.99 or less.

I cancelled my MK X CE orders on amazon and best buy, I realize now that these statues are not really that interesting to me and I have no idea why I am collecting crap like it, plus I am 100% going to trade the game in after 7-14 days so may as well just get the regular version and make the trade in easier.

So if you really want the amazon import edition keep a close eye on it, another may pop up

Also canceled my best buy Final Fantasy Type-0 CE, between Battlefield Hardline and Bloodborne I just don't see myself honestly playing it.  I didn't like Hyrule warriors at all (all moushu games) and Type-0 feels mostly like that kind of game.

Well, Hyrule Warriors is basically Dynasty Warriors. Type-0 isn't. It's more like Crisis Core. I can play games like Crisis Core much longer than I can play a Dynasty Warriors game, but I don't think I've ever finish a Japanese pure hack and slash game.
