I think Microsoft will probably save GoW 3 for the next system if they still keep this exclusive for the third game. Then again, the sequel to Sony's GoW released on the PS2 instead of the PS3 after the new system had already launched, so it's definitely not unreasonable for them to do the same. I just think they've done as much as they could with Gears on the 360, and saving the third game for a brand new experience would be the best option. Plus, they will need a system seller for the next console, and I'm not sure if Halo 4 is going to be it.
Halo 4 will be big. Halo is Halo, and even though Halo 3 was a bit of a letdown (alot of MOTS), it sold great. I enjoyed Halo 3 for about 2 months straight but I got sick of the same old problems that plagued Halo.
Unfortunately for Gears 2, the online multiplayer matchmaking / party system is VERY slow and kills the experience. I don't see Gears 2 multiplayer being very popular for long, especially with a new COD coming out.
If they fix the multiplayer party / matchmaking system to be fast and efficient (after 10 minutes you get paired against players that are superior or terrible, I have yet to play in a close match) then maybe it will have a long life. As of right now, I think Gears 2 will be forgotten in under 2 months -- the matchmaking as atrocious.
