Official NHL 10 CAG Team REBOOT - CheapyD All Stars - Hockey Night Fridays @ 8-12 EST

Not open for further replies.
Well, the CAG team went 5-3 tonight, including a 4 game winning streak, and 2 of the losses coming to "out of the gate" glitchers. We're now above .500 at 10-9 for the season. Not bad. Not bad at all.

In our 2nd game of the night, Magic and I were leading 1-0, until our opponents tied it up with 60 seconds left in the game. On the ensuing faceoff, Magic was called for a penalty, and things did not look bright for the CAG team. Magic then requested that I take the puck coast to coast and score shorthanded. So...I did. After killing off the final 20 seconds of the game, the CAG team reigned victorious.

I tried to save the replay because it was really cool faking out almost every player on their team. Unfortunately, the game would only let me rewind back to the faceoff after I scored. But here's the short clip that was part of the highlights (notice the 4 defenders just standing around me). Even if the other team was mad, I hope they at least thought "damn that was cool", lol.

It was a hell of a lot of fakeouts in the last minute, ending with a nice (requested, as Nate said :p ) SH game winner off the post with about 25 seconds to go. I felt like shit giving that turnover that tied the game, just to repeat the feeling getting a hooking call. I'm just happy that Nate has the ability to fake everyone out (2 or 3 times) then get a nice game winner to end my night.

Anyways, I should be on tonight (without dropping out, which I see you guys won that game 5-1) a little later than usual, because I'm taking some gaming trips beforehand. Hope we can stay over .500 tonight!

^ would have played with you but I would have had to leave my cousins team to rejoin and didn't wanna bother you guys, played some league games instead. nice job fellas.

Wow, Alan. After you left, we ran into the hardest glitchers I've ever seen in my life. They scored 7 goals on 14 shots, so we just quit. I wish I had a recording of that game to send to EA. Dude was deke glitching from both sides, and putting it over the goalie's shoulder every time. fucking ridiculous.

Hey everyone. I just joined up on the team. I was just browsing for a club and saw the CheapyD name and I happened to be listening to the new podcast at the moment. Googled to see if it was related to the site in anyway and I ended up here.

Hope to play with some of you soon.
Gonna ask who's coming tonight. I'm unsure myself, but I'm going to try to be there.
I'll be there at least for a little while. My night is open, but depending on how many people show up/how much fun we're having, I might find something else to do, haha.

Also, Butchered, welcome to the team! Hope you can help us out! Feel free to add me to your XBL buddy list.

tried to either play with or challenge you guys but maybe I have been blacklisted? seems that way when I joined the chat. :(

50/50 tonite, not sure.

Don't know whats with my connection and this game all of a sudden. I can play Battlefield just fine, but this game, I get crazy lag spikes out of no where.

Sweet. So we'll be playing on thin ice tonight, haha. Maybe I'll loosen my ethernet cable just so we all have an equal chance of dropping. Maybe your game is wearing out, Alan? I know it makes no sense, but for it to just be this game...and something that not everybody is experiencing... The only time I get lag spikes like that is when my custom playlist has trouble streaming from my PC. It used to get so bad, I'd have to turn it off to play a smooth game...but I haven't had that happen for awhile.

I must say, Congrats to the CAG team for being over .500 for the season of March, playing 93 games and going 45-44-4! And to make things that much sweeter, the CAG team is now on a 4 game winning streak! We now have something to look foward to tomorrow, so let's try to keep the streak alive to start the new season!

Also, I should be on from 11-5 tomorrow in case anyone can get on.

I don't think you even need to be invited, just search the team and join it. Good to see you'll be here Matt.

Also Nate, what happened to that .500 we had?

Eh, my picture is very similar

We really outplayed this team as much as you can outplay anybody. To make matters worse, it was a team of 3 (all forwards I believe). Alan and I played our usual LD and C. The shot they scored on came very early in the 1st period. I wish I would have taken a picture of the game summary as well because by the end of the period, we had completely forgotten how it happened.

Our defense was just freaking tenacious though. It's not that they didn't have other chances, but we blocked EVERYTHING. And as shown, we spent a very large portion of the game in their zone. Hilariously, the end of game highlights did not even show the goal, and basically every replay was of us doing something positive (blocking shots, making hits, taking shots, etc.)

Of course, after this game, a guy on the other team felt the need to talk shit and sent me a message saying that we sucked and how they only needed one shot. I told him to play us again, but they wouldn't take us up on the challenge. Ridiculous, ridiculous game though. I'd be surprised if anyone could ever show me a worse loss.

This game was very representative of our entire night though. I don't know if it was an April Fools thing or what, but we seriously had the most retarded AI teammates ever. I'm talking even beyond the normal level of "bad". They couldn't make passes (even to each other), they'd get raped after chasing down a puck (by the other team's AI), and turn it over right infront of our goalie, and then on offense, they'd just skate right at defenders and get destroyed. We had a time on attack (and sometimes a shot) advantage in every game. But the bounces just wouldn't go our way. One team even beat us on a goal that redirected off a guy's face, and made a slow arching pattern past the goalie. It was so stupid we could only laugh.

Wow, that's complete bullshit. How the fuck people can even play like that, I don't know. That picture could have a lot of people thinking "glitch", because that was the first thing I thought of.

Meanwhile, I will again be on my bad internet tonight, which also means I can't be on late. If you guys don't mind starting a bit earlier, it would be nice to get more than 5 games a night.

EDIT: I'll post the lonk to the team's page that had the 1 shot: http://www.easportsworld.com/en_US/clubs/762A0001/144562/overview
Looks like our team's record.

I can hop on in the next few minutes for anybody who's able to play early. I really hope the whole team can adapt to the newer playstyle several of us have been using though. Cross creasing is a great way to score, but it's also easy to stop with human defenders. Rather than trying to force it the entire game, pulling up, and looking for point shots becomes so much more effective.

Alan and I have run into several 2 man teams who purposely pick LD and RD, just so they can fire point shots and let the AI grab easy rebounds. There are also a lot of times when the goalie just misses a slapshot and it's an easy goal. If we can just try to work the puck around a little more and look for the open man, it will pay huge dividends. And playing good defense goes hand in hand with that. It doesn't matter how many goals we get if we can't stop the other team from scoring. More scoring chances for us. Less for our opponents. It sounds obvious, but that should be our goal.

I was somebody who really liked how the BAP camera made the game feel, and didn't want to give other cameras a chance. But the fact is, the BAP camera is horrible for passing. I tried Classic, but hated it because I thought it pulled back too far and slowed the game down too much. But then I tried out the Ice camera with auto-zoom turned on, and I love it. It pulls back enough to see your teammates trailing you, but not so much that you feel like you're playing an RPG hockey game. I'd really encourage anybody just to try it, and see if it helps at all with your passing. It's at least worth looking at.

Well Nate, I found that the 2 best cameras for me to make passes were BAP high and classic. Classic gave me a chance to see the entire zone (which is why I still use it), while high (if it spun around when I wanted it to) would let me see the point from behind the net. But, I fould the only good way to use the BAP cameras is to screen the goalie/get rebounds.

I'm surprised to see the results from last night's games, we're so close to .500 again, so I'm guessing everyone adopted the strategy. It would be nice to keep trying to play a little more than Friday nights, since we saw what it did last month (93 games, over .500). So, as usual, if anyone wants to jump on from now to 5 PM Eastern, I'll be willing to play.

I still have this game, I'll prob hop on tomm night and play with you guys if you're gonna get on.

No guarantees though.

But it looks like we've been doing good and I still have fun playing this when I occasionally do.

Well, you could of hopped on any night in the last 2 weeks or so and played. I believe we're on a 15 day playing streak or something like that, and I don't see it slowing down any time soon.

I should be around, unsure of my start time though, so I'll edit this when I figure it out.

EDIT: I will be on around 7, and it looks like I'm going to have my good internet and an uninterrupted night ^_^
So long as we can put up with each other for so long, anyway.

Here's my thing, and I'm just going to throw this out there for the sake of the team, and having a good time. While we've had some really good games lately, and some good streaks, I feel at times, there are some conflicting play styles, and it causes us to not work well as a team. There are some people who really like to push the pace, and try to take advantage of odd man rushes...whether it's via a cross crease, or a breakaway, or whatever.

And then, there's some people who have a more methodical approach of breaking down a team by working the puck around and forcing them to play bad defense. There's nothing particularly wrong with either of these styles, but you can't really do both at the same time either. I don't want to do anything dramatic like split up the team, or call people out, or whatever. But I do want to be able to play how I (and others like me) want to play. The same goes for people who want to play the game differently.

Since I switched my camera angle and started focusing more on keeping the puck in the zone, making good passes, and taking good quality shots, I've felt like I've been playing better. And that's something I'd like to continue. The games where we throw long passes down the ice, rush in, take one shot, and then turn around and rush back to play defense just bore the hell out of me now, and I hate seeing us get dominated in time on attack. I'm not going to tell anybody they're playing the game wrong, but I can say those games are hard for me to enjoy.

I do kinda feel like there should be a gentleman's agreement teamwide to not call for passes from the AI so much. I know the AI is completely retarded most of the time, but they generally will pass it to whoever is open. I could see calling for it if you're open and you've got a clear shot at the net. But calling for a two line pass from the other end of the ice is ridiculous, and a lot of the time just gets picked off anyway.

All right, that's my "rant" for this week. I feel a little dumb complaining about anything because we have been winning a lot of games lately. Maybe I'm just starting to get a little burnt out because of the fact that we have been playing pretty much every day. I just wanted to get that out there before we play tonight. Like I said, I don't want to tell anybody to change how they play. But honestly, I'd prefer to play in smaller groups that play the same way rather than a big group with conflicting styles.

I'd agree that there are some of us who prefer to play in more a methodical "sim" style vs a run-n-gun "arcade" style, and when these two groups mix, we get disastrous results.

Regardless of who is playing, we need to cut down on mistakes as a team.

In my opinion, one of our biggest mistakes is forcing way too many passes/plays that aren't there. If three defenders are in a crease in addition to a teammate in the crease, there is no reason the puck carrier should feed a pass through the crease. If you're skating up the sideboards and see two guys converging in on you, the best thing to do isn't always passing it to the side or taking a weak shot from the blue line. A better result is passing it back to the D-man who can swing it out to the other side of the ice away from the double team. A lot of teams like to load up hits on the blue line, and as a result, the other side of the ice is usually wide open. Take a look around before you press the button.

As Nate said, we also need to cut down on calling for the pass from the A.I. despite them being idiot some of the times. I won't lie and I'll say it straight up: It's usually very obvious when someone calls for a pass. It's also very obvious that half the time the A.I. makes a retarded pass, it's from someone calling for the puck. The A.I simply doesn't force passes. They may make stupid 2 foot long passes or send a pass too wide, but they do not pass it themselves if the passing lane isn't open. Again, take a look around before you press the button. Just because you are open, it doesn't mean there are 4 other people between you and the puck.

Play Defense for a few games an observe what is going on. You'd be shocked at how many teams do the same thing over and over, yet somehow it's "bullshit" how they score on us the same way over and over.

TL;DR: We need to start playing smarter hockey and less one-dimensional hockey.

Yeah, I wasn't at first because I had a ton of shit going on throughout March- good and bad- and was out of state for a week. But I posted in the league thread, and you were the only one to respond. :whistle2:\

As for tonight, I probably won't be getting on till 8 Pacific/11 Eastern. Honestly, I want to watch the White Sox game while I still have the free week trial of MLB Extra Innings.

Glad to see that Alan and Nate addressed the issue I've been kicking myself over for the last couple of weeks. I'll be sure to bitch about how my passes suck tonight.

Anyways, we need to decide how we're going to play, and perhaps it would be better if we call out where we are trying to pass/who we are trying to pass to. I hate getting caught off-guard by some random pass when I'm not even on my own screen, failing to notice that I got the puck, and getting ran over.

And that is my minirant of the week, hope to see you guys on soon!

I'm glad we're all getting on the same page here. I like to cycle the puck around and try to create scoring opportunities, or rebound opportunities. The main problem with that is that, when I play as a defenseman, hardly anyone seems to want to pass me the puck.

I just checked Xbox.com to let Nate and/or Moo know I'd be on probably in 10-15 minutes since the baseball game was nearing its end, but no one was online and I got a message from Magic saying "Hockey night went to hell." What happened?
Thanks for leaving the party and starting your own game.
Dude, the games were getting so scattered and frantic, it was just a complete mess. The game is actually a lot harder with all human players because you don't have the benefit of the AI just instantly grabbing rebounds. I was starting to wonder why we couldn't even keep it close or mount any kind of attack anymore.

I was just going to turn my damn system off, but then I wondered if anything would be different with just two people...but then we ran into glitchers, so we called it a night. It's really no big deal. You act like you and Darktower aren't capable of playing a game yourselves. It wasn't anything personal. It was really either that or I was done anyway.

Did you hear anyone say anything in the 30 minutes or so before we left? Besides, you 2 could of just played games together, using your playstyle while me and Nate played together, using our playstyle. I see no problem at all, since the games that ended last night basically went against everything said in the posts last night, with everyone trying to play differently.

Sorry for the triple post, but I figured that people don't check to see if posts were edited.

If you guys want to try a Take 2 for hockey tonight, I'm going to be on all night. Set myself up to match the chances we were getting last night. Hope to see you guys on.

I won't be on tonight. If I do any gaming, I'll be playing MLB 10 on the PS3. but I would like to set up some games during the week. And, assuming the league isn't dead, I can play some league games against you guys as well.

Who's playing? I figure we'll have a lower turnout with the playoffs going on.

A club that 2 of my friends run offered to play us in a challenge match, by the way.

I'll be on tonight. I can't guarentee that it will work our nicely though (it's been raining like a bitch today), but I'll be on. I think I'm going to screw around with a few different stat setups to see which works best over the next week or so, so I might get better or worse next week.

Perhaps me, Nate, and Alan can all hit our 400th games played within the weekend. Oh, and if anyone wants to start around 7PM Eastern, tonight is gonna be a short one for me. As usual, tomorrow will be the day that I can play a lot more.
