For games that use 3rd party servers it makes sense, however unless Sony is willing to rent Azure servers. I dont see any of that happening.
xbox has supported cross play between pc and xbox since 2007. the only difference is that the requirement was that both games had to be run over xbox live. this announcement is about using anyone's network. that is why final fantasy mmo did not come to xbox because of the hard requirement of using xbox live. playstation by default does not have its "own multiplayer network" rather studios have to build out their networks so that players can play. so the difference.. on xbox Microsoft handles multiplayer and connections between player ( except for EA they are the only exception),on PS4, playstation does not handle matchmaking as its just a bridge, its the responsibility of the developer and studio. This announcement is just allowing xbox live to talk to independent made networks, thats all.

But you can already play Rocket League cross-platform Steam to PS4. That system is already in place. It was about getting the XB1 version added to that infrastructure. Whether that's done through 3rd party servers or whatever, the end result is the same...being able to play against people on Steam at the very least...and most likely people on PS4.

I get that Microsoft is saying "Ok, Psyonix...we'll allow you to do this." But they're still the first ones to pull it off...which is impressive considering the size of the company. If EA gave a miniscule shit about their customers actually having a good time, they probably could have done this years ago.

Regardless, this is happy happy good news...and progress in gaming. Why shit on it?

Because it's still up to the Publishers and Sony. All because Microsoft said Cross Networking, ZOMG, everybody is losing their mind. It's Microsoft and just wait till the stipulations come. I'll look back to this thread and say, Well, there it is. Just as I said.

I've been watching some VIVE videos this morning, and I think that the controllers and the "environment" portion of it will make it WAY more immersive than the Oculus. Especially with the Oculus not including the motion controls, it seems like it will only provide "half" the experience.

I think it's going to depend on what type of experience you want and what you're wanting to play. For something like American Truck Simulator or Elite Dangerous, I don't think the Vive will really offer anything different.

But yeah, for getting up and moving around..it could definitely do a much better job making you feel like you're "there". Playing something like Stanley Parable in the Vive would probably be pretty amazing.

The controllers also definitely give it an edge. I've seen the Job Simulator videos and being able to toss a coffee cup back and forth from one hand to the other is pretty awesome. I would guess Oculus will have basically the same thing when their touch controller comes out...and the Vive controller to me looks a little clunky. It's pretty big for something you're going to be swinging around with your eyes covered. A second iteration of it will probably be smaller...ie. in line with what Oculus is releasing...and then they'll be on the same page.

The Vive is also $200 more. I mean, I guess it starts to cross into the "Well...if you're already spending $600...you might as well spend $800" line of thought. But I would also anticipate a lower price "less bundled" version of the Rift to be available at some point. For me, the biggest thing that could turn me off of Oculus is if they go totally (or even "mostly") closed platform.

If we start seeing that you have to buy "Rift versions" of games through the Oculus store and not just be able to load up your VR enabled game through Steam, then they'll be dead to me. Keeping it open and accessible and not just a money hungry Trumptatorship is the most important thing.

Interesting. The VR headset that PC Gamer recommends...none of them. At least not right now anyway.

http://www.pcgamer.com/the-best-vr-headset/

Basically, the Vive doesn't seem consumer ready (heavy, clunky set up, no games) and the Rift isn't a complete experience yet (touch controllers not ready). Sooo...they pretty much rushed each other and neither should be out yet, haha. Yay capitalism, lol.

Sweet. Amazon currently gives $24.97 for NHL 16 too. I might finally jump on this now that I've joined everybody else in the 21st century with unlimited bandwidth, haha.

Really, going this route is probably the best way to efficiently spend your money. With both Amazon and Best Buy having programs to save 20% on new games now, you're probably paying around $51 for NHL ($48 + tax)...and trading in for $25 6 months later. That's really not bad at all.

I locked in that price too. Gonna send it in on Monday, used it to preorder the new MLB the Show.

I will not be able to make it for pre-hockey tonight as I will be at hockey-hockey. Tonight is finally the Preds game with the family. The team has been hot. Hoping they stay that way. 4 goals and we get free Frosties. Come on, Nashville. Everybody loves free ice cream.

I need to stop subscribing to things that have a recurring subscription...Anyone want a PC key for South Park Stick of Truth or This War of Mine?

Wow...I thought you did unsubscribe. Weren't you looking around the Humble site and you didn't see the option at first...and Brandon made a joke about it being a giant unsubscribe button? I swear I remember that happening.

So, the Oculus Rift finally had its consumer launch today. And apparently, for it to be able to run any game not purchased through the Oculus Store (ie. games on Steam), you have to go into the settings and enable running applications from "unknown sources". I guess it's better than Apple and not allowing external shit at all. But it still comes off kind of douchey. And it really wouldn't surprise me if it makes developers decide to make their games Vive exclusive.

http://www.pcgamer.com/oculus-rift-requires-an-opt-in-to-run-games-from-other-sources

Kind of sad that as soon as big money gets its hands on something it just turns to greed and nonsense. Considering the Rift's roots...being anything but an indie friendly open platform is disappointing.

I dunno, considering how few steps it is, I don't really thinks it's that big of a deal. I feel like its more of a safeguard, for them to say "Hey, if you dont have to enable this option, that means whatever you're about to play is going to work. If you enable this, you're walking into the Wild Wild West. And Will Smith aint here to guide ya. "

Especially with this being new hardware, if they suddenly left everyone release aps for it, like Googleplay/whatever the Itunes store is called now, its going to get quickly flooded with garbage, and turn people away from VR.

Speaking of which, is is possible to hook up the DK2 to whatever the new rift software is, and use it like a watered down rift?

Also, this is what VR was made for (go to 26:55 if the timestamp link doesnt work)

Yeah, I mostly feel that way. I guess I'm just nervous about anyone stumbling into the device who isn't great with computers and thinking the Oculus Store is all there is. It honestly even bothers me when I see people ask the question "What games are they going to make for it?" I don't like the idea of VR needing to be separate from regular gaming or that it has to have some "Wii Sports" like game to make it worthwhile.

And that's partly my concern with the Oculus Store. I don't want the extent of the Rift to become these doofy little games that only a very small group of people have access to. I'd rather see it be things like Alien Isolation or Project CARS...games that appeal to everybody, that can also be played in VR.

As for your question, yes. The DK2 can run on the new 1.3 runtime and actually access Oculus Home and most of the new features. You can even download some of the free games that CV1 users got (I know Lucky's Tale for sure is free to everyone). The biggest issue in doing that is it renders all the old games useless again until they update. No American Truck, no Project CARS, no ARK, etc. The sketchy thing about that though is Project CARS is on the Oculus Store and 1.3 compatible...but the Steam version hasn't been updated yet. The only Steam version game I'm aware of that works with 1.3 is Elite Dangerous.

Here's a link to the new runtime: https://www.oculus.com/en-us/setup/

LOL at the headless driver. I've done stuff like that in Project CARS too. I've actually "gotten out" of the car and tried moving around it a little bit. The tracking isn't as good with the DK2, but it still makes you feel like you're standing next to a McLaren, which is pretty cool. :)

EDIT - Hmm...referencing my point about Project CARS from the last post, I just saw on Steam that people were hoping the developer would give out Oculus Home keys for the game (I guess Elite Dangerous, Adrift, and Windlands have done that). Here's the thread talking about it. Again, I'd rather see integration than separation though. Too many game clients as it is.

EDIT 2 - Decided to keep looking through my games I have on Steam that are also on Oculus Store, and I guess the BlazeRush developer has stated they WON'T be updating the Steam version of the game to 1.3 because they are an "Oculus Store exclusive". They are looking into giving people free Oculus Home keys though since Oculus is allowing them to do that royalty free. Just seems like this could get ugly with Oculus generally wanting to eliminate the need for Steam.

Holy crap, thats a really intuitive way to use the rift.
Yeah. I like how he starts off talking about how simple the build was and getting stuff at Walgreens...and the next minute he's talking about Teensy's, switches, and accelerometers. I bet he could start a Kickstarter for it though and make a fortune, haha.

Anyway, anyone for pre-hockey tonight?

The commercial is the best part of that article. They try to make it sound all classy, but all I hear is "Break into her home. Wear her skin." lol.

In way less creepy news, here's a bunch of Japanese porn games in the new Indie Gala bundle.

Traded 22 old Xbox 360/PS3 games to Gamestop today (yes...there were that many that I own on Steam/GWG, lol) and picked up The Division and a $50 Amazon gift card. Dude at the counter was like "Wow...either you take really good care of your games or I don't want to see the store you just robbed." Because putting games back in their case and on the shelf is super hard. I wanted to tell him "Well...I'm not 5, so...ya know"

He was also amazed at the "rare" games I was trading in like Viva Pinata and Force Unleashed (not Sith edition). Viva Pinata last sold on eBay for $6.00, lol. GS gave me $2.75 for it. After shipping, ebay fees, and time...to me, that's a wash. As much as I generally dislike Gamestop, I cross referenced with Best Buy and Walmart, and they actually do give you the most for probably 85-90% of games. I was honestly surprised.

Anyway TL:DR - I am now ready to be Divisioning (and Multiplying) with everybody...except Alan. ;)

Hey, I don't have The Division either! I don't get enough credit for not playing stuff with you guys!
Well, Alan has it...just on Steam. That was the joke. And you would know that...but you don't play stuff with us, lol. That better for ya?

Also, Alan...here you go.

https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/4ckm38/oculus_runtime_switcher_0506070813_with_gui/

The guy that made the Oculus Runtime switcher updated it to work with 1.3 and made a neat little GUI for it. So, basically, you install 1.3...then install the older runtimes you want to use to a different directory (I have 0.8 installed for American Truck Sim and more recent games...and also 0.5 installed for extended mode stuff like Alien Isolation, Assetto Corsa, etc). Then, you just run the Runtime Switcher program and click which one you need to use before launching the game.

It works great and I was able to check out Oculus Home and a few of the free games/experiences last night. The Steam version of Project CARS is now updated to 1.3 as well. So, after catching a bunch of hell for saying they'd update the Steam version "eventually", they got it done in less than a week, haha. Head tracking on everything is buttery smooth too. No judder. No lag when moving your head back and forth quickly. This is basically how the DK2 should have launched.

Also, if you haven't tried that Back to Dinosaur Island 2 demo on Steam, DO IT. It's really amazing. Cryengine is ridiculous.

Sweet, I'll have to give that a shot.
Yeah, I actually think owning a DK2 right now might be better than owning the consumer Rift. Just on the logic that it can play everything the consumer Rift can...but also has access to all the older games as well. As far as I know, the consumer Rift won't work with the older SDK's...so for the forseeable future (maybe at least until the Touch controllers come out), the DK2 seems like the more useful device.

It does make me wonder how often Oculus will keep doing these SDK updates that render previous software incompatible though. The developers really, really aren't happy about that. Kunos has even gone as far as saying they're not going to update VR support for Assetto Corsa at all until something universal emerges between the Rift, Vive, OpenVR, etc. You'd think Oculus would be more careful with it now though since they'd be negating purchases made through their own store.

Man, just looking through recent releases on Steam...there are a TON of Vive exclusive VR games that just came out (including a new Surgeon Simulator).

And this one stood out to me like "ooh...that stings." Not that it won't be doable on the Rift. But it appears that Valve has done a better job getting a wide variety of developers and genres ready to go.

This is the only video I could find of it. Amusingly enough, the best thing about the video is the nervous laughter as the guy realizes that it's like he's in high school PE class again when he can't get a ball out of the infield. Just look at those horrible, horrible swings. All them Wii Sports dingers had him feeling like a champ, lol.

And in more important news...the sequel to Huniepop is out. Huniecam...yes, you run a camgirl business.

I would have to imagine that now that it's "out," the updates have to be iterative since they cant get away with it that easy. They can probably get away with updates that make games incompatible, but those have to be few and far between.
