Official NHL Not 15 (14) Discussion/CAG Team Thread - Headsets On Pants Off! New Team!

Just an idea to freshen up the game. We had played almost 800 games as the Flying Vegans. And we figured if EA hadn't botched NHL 15 we would have made a new team anyway. Plus , it gives us a chance for new uniforms, logo, etc.

Wow...and here are some "rumors" going around (on CAG, surprisingly) concerning EA UFC and NHL 15...and their shared development.

Game is total different than it was at launch. Props to the devs trying to fix it. Rumor is yet another patch is coming tomorrow, with possible free fighters. From the patch notes the hardcore players are liking what they see.
Game has gotten so much better. Expecting the same with NHL 15 with patches
Same. Rumor was they pulled devs from NHL15 to fix UFC , now they are going back to NHL. You'd think EA had an army of devs with the money they make on Ultimate Team packs.
This was posted in the deals forum because apparently EA UFC is currently $29.99 on Amazon. I haven't touched the game in like a month...but if they do release another patch with more free fighters soon, I'll probably check it out again.

I would imagine the pulling devs rumor isn't true. That just seems stupid. Maybe they'll pull devs from FIFA to fix NHL quicker...and then FIFA will be broken too.

Even so how much could they actually add, there is just way too much missing

I actually traded in NHL 15 this weekend, the game was just so bad from what they have been putting out, just not fun. Ended up getting a preorder for FIFA 15 with the credit.

Man...I can't even imagine what you paid for a 2 week rental, lol. Yikes.

But yeah...they already posted that list of things that they plan on adding. OTP, draft in Be A GM, simming shifts in Be A Pro. I feel like that's about as much as you can expect. Other than that, it'll probably just be regular patching and tweaking to gameplay like they always do. Maybe fix the hercules celebration, haha.

Polygon mentioned that in a recent article. Also, a generally good article about the current state of annualized sport games:

http://www.polygon.com/2014/9/21/6788051/can-anyone-make-a-sports-video-game-in-a-year-anymore
The article raises some good points, but sadly, it all boils down to as long as people keep buying them (regardless of how crappy they are), publishers will keep pumping them out. And it's a tough situation because they're playing on the emotions of fans who have no alternative. Until the majority of fans can show some backbone, nothing will change.

I don't want to use bestkeeper14 as an example...but a guy in the Madden thread did the same thing. People buying the game for $60, playing it for less than a month and trading it in are basically taking it from both ends with EA and Gamestop, lol. You seriously couldn't make them any happier.

Oh, also, Alan...I wanted to ask you, is Horizon 2 actually enough to convince you to get an XB1? I know you mentioned it, I just wasn't sure how serious you were about it. I don't have the game pre-ordered yet (I've been on the fence about getting it at launch). But if everybody is getting it and you're specifically getting an XB1 to play it, then I'll definitely pick it up right away.

$4... is that ok?

Wow...how did you pull that off? I don't think I've seen anybody giving more than $40 for the game.
10% with GCU so $44, $48 for the game on release with GCU, used a $5 cert for tax

I usually at least keep games a month to get the most out of that money, but with FIFA coming out and the $10 cert for preorder, I had to do a swap.

Really depends on how good Horizon 2 is. If it become our NHL substitute, then I might pick up a One for it, but as long as we keep playing 14, I probably wouldn't. Or if something really good comes out that's  really good also relatively soon (though looking at a release list, nothing exclusive that I cant get on the PC anyways is coming out).

I want Horizon 2 so badly... but it makes absolutely no sense for me to buy it at full price with Horizon 1 unplayed and the inevitability of Horizon 2 going on sale for at least $20 off by the end of November.

Also, Alan pretty much just told everyone to stop playing NHL 14 so he can get on board this here train!

That's pretty awesome. I'm surprised BB would allow for that kind of turnaround. Kind of makes for a "satisfaction guaranteed" program if you buy a lot of new games. I get that you have to pay for GCU...but that's still pretty impressive.

Yeah, that's kind of how I feel. I really liked the demo, but unless it's something we're going to play on a weekly basis, I'm not sure i want to spend $60 on it. As good as the driving in Horizon is...I still have to compare it to racing games in the Rift with my steering wheel. And that's just a different kind of experience. And that damn Black Friday sale Horizon 1 had is in the back of my mind too.

Meh, if only Brandon and myself are getting it Day 1, I might skip it and get Destiny instead while waiting for a BB sale on Horizon 2.

Well, that's what I mean...even if you, me, and Brandon get it...are we going to be like "Hey Alan and Gary (and Matt on occasion)...see ya! We're going to play Forza!", lol. Too many games out soon for a $60 every once in awhile game. I'm sure I'll have it by Black Friday though.

Regarding why I am rarely on NHL 14, I find it hard to play anything on the 360 or PS3 these days. It has nothing to do with the systems being "old" or anything, but I have accumulated so many cheap or free games on PS4 and Xbox One that I can't even play all of them. Still gonna try!

Then there's Destiny. I believe I've put in close to 30 hours and haven't even finished the story nor played many Vanguard Strikes. Forget about raids for now. How are you doing on the Xbox One version, Gary? My Titan is a level 23.

No Charlie or Coach though.

I just can't see dropping money on Forza when im not impressed by it. Plus , I've missed the last couple of hockey nights anyways. So yall can play which ever.

But we miss you Gary.

I think I'm gonna pick up Plants vs Zombies on the One. Was debating Destiny, but I could see myself waiting on that frankly.

That's the tough thing. Unless you're either an unconditional fan or are going to play a bunch of online...almost no game is worth full price, haha.

And speaking of being an unconditional fan, I guess that's me for survival games now. I ended up grabbing The Long Dark last night when I saw that Steam resellers had it for $11.50. And man, there's something very primal about that game. Once you find shelter, you're like "Yes! I'm never going to leave here." Then you realize you need food and water, so you have to venture back out into the cold...where the wolves are, lol. So far, the game seems really hard, but in a good way.

Also...just saw this.

https://games.yahoo.com/news/ea-begins-patching-back-missing-140002433.html

So, delaying the game 2 weeks would have at least allowed for that stuff to be in the game. I'm guessing they figured a delay of any kind would just magnify still not having EASHL and GM Connected. So, they decided it would be better to be on time but have the game not have even more things...that they could at least add back later. Messy situation either way, but we'll see how long the next update takes.

Allegedly, OTP will be out in October. Quick, Alan. Go buy your Xbox One, lol

Man, I wish you could have a last night longer than 12 characters. Was going to name my player one of the following:

Hingle McCringleberry

Jammie Jammie-Jammie

The Player Formerly Known as Mousecop

Wonder if they'll even have OTP where you can play with your friends in a reasonable amount of time.

Once/if they get that in there, is that enough for us all to get NHL15?

Also, I've been playing FIFA last night and today. It's crazy how much better that game is than NHL has been. Not doing so great online...0-2... but haven't lost by more than a goal yet. I hope to learn to play better once I sink more time into it.

Does the Long Dark have any "combat" in it? It's been hard to tell. Also, how "alpha" does it seem right now? Like how you could tell Rust was a WIP, while 7 Days in its current state seems like it could be a (bad) release candidate.

So you've lost 1-0 twice? I keed, I keed!

Yeah, that will be the telling thing...how long it takes them to implement the lobby system. From what they said, it's just going to be random drop in at first. So, the only chance you'd have of getting in a room with friends is all pressing A at the same time and hoping for the best (translation: fuck that).

I would imagine by the time the lobby system is patched in, it will be reasonably easy to get the game used (a few nearby Gamestop's have it right now...for $54.99 of course, but with the 20% off birthday coupon, that wouldn't be too bad). At that point, giving EA none of the money...I can't imagine I'd be super opposed to at least having it to play.

-----------------------------------

As for The Long Dark, so far, it reminds me more of The Forest than of Rust or 7 Days (it's also only single player...and they said they presently have no plans for MP or co-op). I've only played for about an hour, but it doesn't really have any crafting yet. I think you can chop down trees for fire wood if you find an axe...but there's no punching trees to build a house type of thing, haha. It's more scavenging, finding places that you can hole up in, and venturing into the unknown without getting lost, freezing to death, etc.

Overall, while somewhat small and limited, the game itself feels very polished (they have been working on it for two years though). To me, it feels very story driven. It lets you choose between a male or female character when you start the game, and each character has voice acting that lets you know what you need to pay attention to.

It's just tough because these Early Access games are such a crapshoot. I could say "It's a great concept and seems like it's worth $20". But then they might stop updating it in a month. It does have a lot of potential though...and for what's there, it's unique and nothing is inherently broken (no glitches in an hour of play...probably above the waterline for an Early Access game, haha). That reason alone was why I looked into the reseller price. $11.50 was much easier to justify for the game "as-is" rather than buying on the promise of things that might never happen.

EDIT - Just realized I didn't actually answer the combat question, lol. You can fight off the wolves. For whatever reason, I wasn't able to equip a small hatchet that I had found...but I could equip a flare to "scare" them (it did not work...they ate me, lol). There IS a hunting rifle also. I assume you can use it on both deer and wolves.

Gotcha, just couldn't tell if there was anything to do other than scavenge and explore. Being a single player game, I wonder that the "endgame" is. Is your ultimate goal to escape the wilderness? With Rust and 7dtd, its pretty much to build your base up so you can survive and ward off attackers. I just wonder what the point of Long Dark will be once you have your "groove".

NHL 15 just didn't seem different enough for me to get interested in.  The best part was the broadcast stuff but once you see that it get old quickly.  Still had crappy AI and lopsided play, the outshoot a team 34-10 and lose 3-2 kind.

If you play with the sliders, it does get a bit better, but not by much. The problem is, there's no real game modes to do anything with anyway.

Might as well just play NHL 3-on-3, it has about as many game modes as NHL 15.

All true. That shit has happened to me in all my (5) HUT games. Played a bit late last night. I still have about 2 hours left on the EA Access trial even after last night.

In its current state, it seems like "stay alive" is the endgame, haha. And it's pretty tough too. I just played for another hour, and I'm not really sure how long you're "supposed" to be able to stay alive because there's only so much to loot. When I was about to stop (thinking I would die), I did learn that in addition to harvesting meat from deer the wolves kill, you can also melt snow and boil the water.

So, I guess as long as the wolves and deer respawn, you could get reasonably comfortable. Also, the map isn't procedural, but item locations seem to be random. I thought I found where the hunting rifle was supposed to be, but the gun rack was empty. There is also a workbench for crafting and a map, but they both say they're not available in alpha. So far, they've been really quick with updates/hotfixes (they did two yesterday). But yeah, we'll see how that lasts.

The elements are brutal though. At one point, I was starving, dehydrated, and freezing to death, lol. It's a fun game though. Definitely worth the reseller price. :)

I can't get into survival games because I play the most expensive one yet, Real Life. It sucks but some days are good.
Yeah, but do you get to pretend that you're Liam Neeson in The Grey?

Also, I traded Real Life in to Gamestop for store credit. They gave me a 10% bonus.

I think you have your genre's mixed up. You're actually playing Real Life Simulator 2015. I play the same game, and it's pretty shitty and never gets patched.

Sorry Nate, genres were mixed. I do play "Let's Do Yard work in August in Florida at 1 PM during the day". It sucks and it's a shitty survival game with no rewards.
