Yikes...not sure how I feel about that. If it's essentially financial backing and they keep the same team working on it (John Carmack and others), then hopefully it will be a good thing. It does make me think a little less of Palmer Lucky and Brendan Iribe though. Iribe might as well be a panelist on Shark Tank at this point. This is the 3rd company that he's helped start up that has eventually been bought out. He started with Scaleform (bought by Autodesk), then went to Gaikai (bought by Sony)...and now Oculus. I can't even imagine how rich that dude must be.

They're supposed to be releasing the new developers kit in July...with full 1080p and positional tracking. You can pre-order one now for $350. I was really thinking about just skipping that one and waiting for the consumer version. But with this news, now I'm antsy. My logic with getting the first developers kit was that if the project ever fell apart and didn't make it to market, I'd hate to miss out on one of the most awesome experiences ever. I guess it would be a tremendous fail on Zuckerberg's part to spend $2 billion on Oculus and then not release an amazing retail version. But geez...freaking Facebook? That makes me nervous as shit, lol.

EDIT - Interesting...Oculus themselves are calling it "partnering with Facebook".

http://www.oculusvr.com/blog/oculus-joins-facebook/

So, maybe it really is just financial backing. With Sony just leaking their PS4 VR headset, this could be a huge push for Oculus if it allows them to lower cost. As long as I don't have to watch stupid ass ads or do surveys or play Farmville...maybe it won't be so terrible.

From what MZ said though in that statement, it's really for FB now. Quote is at the bottom. Too long to post. It seems aa if it's going to ve flooded with FB stuff or maybe just be the FBOR.

Wow...here you go, Alan. Warehouse & Logistics Simulator and Towtruck Simulator 2015 already bundled for $5

Heck yeah, totally getting in on this one.

R.I.P Oculus

I just wonder if that's general FB hate coming through. From everything on the Oculus site, it doesn't sound like their hands are coming off the project at all. This quote in particular seemed encouraging:

This partnership is one of the most important moments for virtual reality: it gives us the best shot at truly changing the world. It opens doors to new opportunities and partnerships, reduces risk on the manufacturing and work capital side, allows us to publish more made-for-VR content, and lets us focus on what we do best: solving hard engineering challenges and delivering the future of VR.

Over the next 10 years, virtual reality will become ubiquitous, affordable, and transformative, and it begins with a truly next-generation gaming experience. This partnership ensures that the Oculus platform is coming, and that it’s going to change gaming forever.

We’ll see you in the Metaverse!

– Palmer, Brendan, John and the Oculus team

To me, FB hate and hooking up with such a mainstream company will turn people off. Personally, I don't care because all FB is to me is a practical and convenient way to stay in touch with family/friends. But yeah...the comments on that blog post are UGLY. Lots of people talking about canceling their DK2 pre-orders. They really should have partnered with a PC developer of some sort. Allegedly, Valve has a VR headset of their own in prototype...but NVidia or ATI would have made sense.

Facebook just has such a stigma...even if everything remains the same in terms of development, people are going to lose their minds. At the same time though, it's always trendy to hate anything popular on the internet...so, maybe this won't change anything and it will blow over once all the cool kids are done ripping on it.

But seriously though...ads or Farmville...and I'm out, lol.

Mark Zuckerburgs Sttaememy.
I'm excited to announce that we've agreed to acquire Oculus VR, the leader in virtual reality technology.

Our mission is to make the world more open and connected. For the past few years, this has mostly meant building mobile apps that help you share with the people you care about. We have a lot more to do on mobile, but at this point we feel we're in a position where we can start focusing on what platforms will come next to enable even more useful, entertaining and personal experiences.

This is where Oculus comes in. They build virtual reality technology, like the Oculus Rift headset. When you put it on, you enter a completely immersive computer-generated environment, like a game or a movie scene or a place far away. The incredible thing about the technology is that you feel like you're actually present in another place with other people. People who try it say it's different from anything they've ever experienced in their lives.

Oculus's mission is to enable you to experience the impossible. Their technology opens up the possibility of completely new kinds of experiences.

Immersive gaming will be the first, and Oculus already has big plans here that won't be changing and we hope to accelerate. The Rift is highly anticipated by the gaming community, and there's a lot of interest from developers in building for this platform. We're going to focus on helping Oculus build out their product and develop partnerships to support more games. Oculus will continue operating independently within Facebook to achieve this.

But this is just the start. After games, we're going to make Oculus a platform for many other experiences. Imagine enjoying a court side seat at a game, studying in a classroom of students and teachers all over the world or consulting with a doctor face-to-face — just by putting on goggles in your home.

This is really a new communication platform. By feeling truly present, you can share unbounded spaces and experiences with the people in your life. Imagine sharing not just moments with your friends online, but entire experiences and adventures.

These are just some of the potential uses. By working with developers and partners across the industry, together we can build many more. One day, we believe this kind of immersive, augmented reality will become a part of daily life for billions of people.

Virtual reality was once the dream of science fiction. But the internet was also once a dream, and so were computers and smartphones. The future is coming and we have a chance to build it together. I can't wait to start working with the whole team at Oculus to bring this future to the world, and to unlock new worlds for all of us.

See, he mentions the gaming side of it being left up to them...but wanting to expand on it. I don't know. There's a lot of good that could come from having somebody with so much financial clout as a supporter. But rarely do those things get pulled off without making compromises that leave the experience lacking in many ways. There was a time when Facebook was the small upstart with ambition. Just ask MySpace, haha.

I saw where Notch said he no longer had any interest in an Oculus version of Minecraft because he didn't want to have anything to do with Facebook.

Yeah...it's weird how some people just vehemently want nothing to do with them. Somebody on the Oculus website made the comparison to how people reacted when Disney bought Marvel and how everybody thought nothing good would come of it. Basically, all they have to do is make an awesome product and people will shut the hell up and jump on board. It's a hell of a gamble because they're going to take a pretty big PR hit because of this. But at the end of the day, if they still make the best VR experience, that's all that will matter.

At least he went into more description than the usual "I don't like them." He posted this to explain his reasoning:

http://notch.net/2014/03/virtual-reality-is-going-to-change-the-world/
I get where he's coming from, and it's what a lot of people are saying (though to be fair...he was a bit slow on the uptake...for a game that doesn't "fit the platform", that Minecraft mod has been out almost a year). The idea that you can start your company through the support of the community (Kickstarter), and then sell it before your product even reaches the market. It just feels dirty. Ultimately though, our society passed the point of having "morals" and "principles" a long time ago. If the Facebook Oculus Rift is amazing...people will buy it. But there's definitely more pressure on them now to not fuck it up.

After reading all the comments on that blog last night, I decided to pre-order the development kit #2. My reasoning is basically that with it being a dev kit...it should still be a pretty open format and probably not be riddled with Facebook integration yet. And it will be 1080p, have positional tracking, and no longer have motion blur. So, the three major complaints of the first Rift will be fixed. After that, I can't really think of too much else that they can add in terms of head/vision that will really make VR better.

I guess they could add some motion controllers like the Razer Hydra or really go over the top and do full body tracking with a Kinect-like device or an Omni-like treadmill...but the more they add, the higher the buy in price becomes just to get started for things that some people may have no interest in. I guess I feel like DK2 will be my failsafe in case Facebook does screw up the final product or make it really suck. If things fell apart before launch and I only had my first Rift, I think I'd regret not getting the better one.

The only downside is since I just got that G27, I really don't want to resell my Rift just yet. I'm going to push my luck and wait closer to the summer. Hopefully I'll still be able to get $100+ for it by that point.

The head of Oculus has been answering questions (see also: putting out fires) on Reddit all day today.

http://www.reddit.com/user/palmerluckey

I tell ya, I can understand if the move was necessary (ie. to be able to compete with Sony's headset). But as many others have said, Google, or some other company that people don't have such strong negative feelings for would have been a safer play. People aren't going to be forgiving with any shortcomings like they would have been if Oculus had stayed independent. The thing needs to be perfect now.

I've never wanted to be inside of a goat so badly...

Damn, that should be their slogan, haha.

And ditto on the Warehouse DLC. I guess we actually need to try the game out to see if it is horrible. I played Towtruck sim briefly yesterday, and it's kinda bad, lol. Surprisingly, it does have a cockpit view...complete with mouse look. But the driving mechanics seem pretty rough...and you can't customize the controls (well, you can with Xpadder).

But yeah...you drive with WSAD or the arrow keys...and I still haven't figured out how to pick up a car yet. I need to spend more time with it, but so far, unless you desperately want to tow people's cars, Euro Truck is like a million times better. Crazy that it launched on Steam with a $14.99 price less than a month ago.

Ehh...I don't think they look quite as bad as the toys. But they're definitely ripped and roided up. They look like Brock Lesnar dressed up as a Ninja Turtle for Halloween, lol. But I'ma just say it. As long as Megan Fox has a shower scene or something, this movie is a win, haha.

I would get all outraged over Michael Bay "shitting on my childhood". But to be honest, this isn't the first (and it won't be the last) time TMNT has been mangled up in some way. At this point, everything is an interpretation. The same arguments could be made for Superman and even Batman (George Clooney's nipples say hello).

To further my point, this is the only real lasting image any of the Transformers movies left me with [customspoiler='SCHWING!']

Well, ok...maybe that and John Turturro.

HO-LEE CRAP...that Rust video was better than most movie trailers, lol (and, admittedly, probably better than that TMNT trailer Gary posted, haha....though I wouldn't mind seeing Megan Fox with that rock ;)). That was so good. I actually lol'd several times.

As for Insurgency, I'd need something to sell me on the game. It kinda just looks like "any old shooter" to me (or at least "any old tactical shooter"). Personally, I'd want to wait for a steeper discount...or a bundle, haha.

I am ready for some hockey tonight though. My ass has almost fully healed. Time for EA to work its magic.

Haha, I used to listen to that all the time when I was a kid. That and Tollbooth Willie were my favorites.

And since Alan doesn't use the "evil Facebook", lol...here's my permanent solution for my G27.

It makes Euro Truck probably one of the best games I've ever played, haha. It definitely creates those moments when your mind gets tricked into thinking it's real. Some of the scenery in that game is really awesome.

Man, thats awesome. Did you build it yourself?
Yeah, I went to a local Pull-A-Part and found the seat (I wanted something decently sporty but preferably leather...ended up finding this seat in a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am) and it only cost $30. Then, I got the wood, screws, paint, etc from Lowe's Home Improvement. I followed some instructions that I found on the insidesimracing.tv forums.

They've got some really crazy elaborate setups on there...one that even just uses PVC pipe. But this one required the least amount of tools and was mostly just simple 2x4's cut to various lengths. My wife got me a circular saw for Christmas, so this was really the first chance I got to use it. My cuts weren't all perfect (straight lines are hard, yo)...and it's a bit off kilter in places. But it's really solid and functional...which was my biggest concern.

I really wanted to build this one...but it was just way beyond my depth, lol.
RMT-RS1-DIY-4.jpg

But yeah, it took me like 4-5 days, working on it here and there as I could...and painting really freaking slowed me down, since I had to bring it inside one night because it started snowing (I was like "WTF springtime?!?"). All in all, the total cost with seat, wood, screws, paint, and a few extra things that I didn't have (goggles, C-clamp, drop cloth, etc) came in right around $100...which is WAYYYY cheaper than the pre-built ones you can buy, haha.

It definitely adds to the immersion with the Rift though, and it's really trippy in Assetto Corsa when I see the shifter in the right position...and I turn and look back and the seat is in the actual position of the seat in the game. It's hard to explain, but those little things just totally sell your brain on things being real. I can't even imagine when the 1080p Rift is out and things are crystal clear and you can actually lean forward to get closer to the dash and stuff.

My body is ready for VR, lol.

So, what are we doing tonight? I know Rob inquired about NHL. I'm pretty sure I've got league games to play against him and Alan...so I'd be up for that...and possibly subjecting myself to EASHL for a little bit. I doubt I'll feel like committing to a full night of it though, and will probably want to throw myself off a cliff at some point, lol. But yeah, I'm ready whenever anybody else is.

I have games against Brandon and Rob. While I can play tomorrow, I will probably still be able to play those tonight if it's in the next couple hours.
