so i'm home in san diego for a week. i know there was a discussion of mexican food earlier in this thread but what's the best mexican food around the mira mesa area (or within 20 minutes)? i've been gone for awhile so i'm guessing that all of my old haunts have gone downhill or changed[/quote] I live in Mira Mesa, so I know plenty about the spots around here.
Don't go to Alejandro's (the old Albertos) that used to be next to Mervyn's and across from TRU. I haven't ate there, but everybody tells me to stay away.
There are three really good spots on Miramar Road. Palomino's in the business area where subway is located has the largest burritos I've ever seen. I swear they are 4-5 inches wide and 8-10 inches tall. I haven't ate there since Chargers training though--since around july or august. This place is considered to be a hidden secret for most people.
The usual spot on Miramar rd and my favorite taco shop in north county that I go to is Roberto's. If you're coming from the 15 going eastbound on Miramar rd, it's located in the plaza right after the pyramid. They give a very large amount of carne asada fries. I think this is the best place in north county for fries. California burritos are very meaty, so if you use a lot of hot sauce, they can start to taste/look really dark. I only eat the fries and california burritos, so I can't comment about anything else they serve. Popular spot. Very busy late at night.
There is also another taco shop directly across the street from the Denny's on Miramar Road that is really good, I just haven't ate there in 2-3 years. Popular spot. Also busy late at night.
In Mira Mesa, El Patron (Cotixas) right next to Ralphs is decent. I like their burritos, their carne asada fries are different than the usual since they are more restaurant style with beans, pico and large fries. You can add or take out whatever you want, of course. If you're on a budget, they have bean and cheese burritos, chicken mixed burritos, and some other varities for $1.59. Fish tacos are just $0.99. I go to the cotixas next to my house for cheap mexican food if I don't want to spend so much or if I want to eat a little lighter. If it's like the Cotixas next to my house, they close at 10:00pm, 10:30, or 11:00pm. I forget which time.
Juanbertos on black mtn rd right off of miramar rd in the same plaza as Rice King is decent and better than it used to be, but I don't eat there as much. It's a somewhat popular spot though. Can be busy at night. Lots of marines, and it's right next to a bar that marines go to.
If you can only pay by card, Sombrero always accepts card. Their food is good, but isn't as big as most places. That one is located where the old nickel city used to be and in the same plaza as Chuck e cheese's , in the plaza right across from the Denny's on Mira Mesa Blvd.
So anyway, the best spot in my opinion is Robertos on Miramar Road.
