P3P for PSP - Persona 3 Portable headed to the US July 2010

While the AI was OK I would have definitely liked the option to control them directly. I didn't like having to just rely on my MC to use items and cast Buffs.

Ryuu: True, but in most tales game you can switch what character you're using. And I also felt you had far more control over how Party members acted as well.

Here's hoping we can have "female love interests" when going the female route. Giggity giggity.

Also, the youtube videos of someone playing it show it running on a PSPgo...interesting.

The game comes out the around the same time as the PSP Go. So it only makes sense that they would be showing it off on a GO instead of a PSP 3000.

But that begs the interesting question of is it going to be UMD and DL, just DL, or just UMD and the youtube footage was just a joke?

Also, if P3 is DL, will P1 be DL on the first day as well, or will it just be UMD?

Persona 1 is both UMD and DL, and both will cost $40.

No it doesn't. It has been mentioned that it will be a UMD and PSN release. And it's being shown on the PSP Go because it's coming out on the same date(Nov 1st in Japan). So of course they would want to push that version of the game.
Jesus, how many times can they expect you to buy the same game within a 3 year period? I already own the original and FES. The only way I'd pick this up is if it reached bargain bin prices. I love the game but seriously, give us P5 or some new SMT on the PS3 instead.
Uh... I know, uh.. really.....

....

*shoves aside his PS2 copies and clamors to import a PSP Go and some Japanese PSN cards*

It's official for North America:
It's Persona 3, and it's portable. 'Nuff said.

IRVINE, CALIFORNIA -- JANUARY 20, 2010 -- Atlus U.S.A., Inc. today revealed that Shin Megami Tensei®: Persona®3 Portable™, the handheld adaptation of one of the highest-rated role-playing games of all time, would release in North America for PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system in July.

Featuring the unprecedented addition of a new player-controlled female protagonist who offers players a fresh new perspective for one of gaming's most inventive narratives, P3P adds dozens of additional hours of playability on top of a game that already easily exceeded 100 hours of total play time. Numerous additional improvements and enhancements serve to streamline the experience for optimal handheld RPG enjoyment.

"Persona 3 introduced a revolutionary social element to role-playing games," explained Aram Jabbari, Manager of Public Relations and Sales at Atlus. "Players weren't just progressing through a story; they were a part of it, and their decisions and the relationships they chose to foster or neglect became a powerful complement to the game's satisfying combat. Persona 3 Portable takes everything that made Persona 3 such a tremendous, award-winning hit and translates it into the perfect handheld RPG experience."

SMT: Persona 3 Portable is currently scheduled for release on July 6, 2010.

About Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 Portable

Terrible creatures lurk in the dark, preying on those who wander into the hidden hour between one day and the next. As a member of a secret school club, you must wield your inner power--Persona--and protect humanity from impending doom. Will you live to see the light of day?

Key Features

 • Maximum Persona 3--The RPG that captured critics and fans alike achieves a new level of excellence. Built upon an enhanced version of the game, players will find numerous significant improvements, including the addition of Skill Cards, part-time jobs, a total of five difficulty settings (ranging from the newcomer-friendly "beginner" to the ultra-hardcore "maniac"), and most importantly, the ability to directly control your teammates in battle.
 • Gain a whole new perspective--The choice of your protagonist's sex at the start of the game has a dramatic impact on the game's intricate social dynamics. Persona 3 veterans will get a kick out of playing through the story from a new female perspective, gaining new Social Links, special events, and unique romantic opportunities.
 • Slick system enhancements--Improved playability permeates every aspect of the gameplay experience. One-button menu shortcuts, streamlined team equipment changes, incredibly short load times, and other tweaks and enhancements create an ideal pace for portable gaming.

Sigh, this will be a triple dip. :/ I was able to get rid of the original game (kept the art book) and thought I was safe with FES, but now they have this which doesn't have FES, but is better than the original 3...argh.

The box art is beautiful, despite poor Yukari being miniaturized and stuffed way down in the corner behind the ESRB rating. :(

This will be a triple dip for me as well, despite only ever making it ~25 hours into the game. I loved the game but it's just hard to find the time for super-long dungeon crawling sessions. Hopefully having it in portable format will make it a little easier to play in bite size chunks.

Are you my long-lost gaming twin? I'm in the exact same boat as you. I've tried time and time again to play P3 and P4 but just don't have the time to get very far. I find that my RPG playing works MUUUUCH better on a portable system.

I'm really digging Crimson Gem Saga right now.

The first part of that song sounds like something I've heard on the radio before, but no clue what band it was.

What exactly are we missing, without giving away spoilers, buy not having the answer?

A gameplay-heavy, non-essential epilogue to the main story. With a new character. About 25-30 hours, IIRC.

New video walkthrough:
SMT: PERSONA 3 PORTABLE VIDEO WALKTHROUGH RELEASED, REMINDS GAMERS THAT DICHOTOMIES ARE AWESOME
School kids by day + demon slayers by night = win

IRVINE, CALIFORNIA -- APRIL 14, 2010 -- Atlus U.S.A., Inc. today released a video walkthrough for Shin Megami Tensei®: Persona®3 Portable™ for PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system, reminding gamers of the awesome dual nature of the upcoming handheld adaptation of one of the highest-rated role-playing games of all time. The video, which covers Persona 3 Portable's basic design and gameplay, also offers fans their first look at the game's North American localization.

"It's a known fact: people like dichotomies," mused Crystal Murray, PR Specialist at Atlus. "Our lives are full of dualities, of stark contrasts, and it's ample manifestations of them in Persona 3 Portable's uniquely satisfying RPG design that has made the game one of its genre's most popular entries ever. During the day, you have to attend school, juggle interpersonal relationships, and even court a romance or two. By night, you're tasked with the lofty goal of saving the world from encroaching Shadows and darkness, having to fight off a grotesque menagerie of otherworldly creatures. It's a recipe the Persona series has become synonymous with, and it's what makes Persona 3 Portable one of the biggest, most substantial, most fulfilling handheld role-playing games ever."

A second walkthrough video detailing the enhancements and additions--particularly the inclusion of an all-new female protagonist--found in the new handheld version of the popular RPG is scheduled for release in the coming weeks.

Featuring the addition of a new player-controlled female protagonist who offers players a fresh new perspective to one of gaming's most inventive narratives, P3P dramatically increases the replayability of a game already renowned for its length and depth. Numerous additional improvements and enhancements serve to streamline the experience for optimal handheld RPG enjoyment.

SMT: Persona 3 Portable is currently scheduled for release on July 6, 2010. For more information, visit the official full Persona 3 Portable website: http://www.atlus.com/p3p

IRVINE, CALIFORNIA -- APRIL 28, 2010 -- Atlus U.S.A., Inc. today added even more incentive to what 9 out of 10 Atlus employees already considered a tremendous value with the announcement of a pre-order bonus baseball cap for Shin Megami Tensei®: Persona®3 Portable™ for PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system. The hat, modeled after the one worn by fan-favorite SEES member Junpei Iori, offers a rare collectible to celebrate while also serving as a rather convenient costume component for cosplay-minded gamers. This pre-order bonus promotion is exclusive to Amazon.com, Amazon.ca, and GameStop/EB Games (in stores and online in the United States and Canada), and only while supplies last.

"Hardcore roleplaying game fans are always telling us how memorable the cast of characters in Persona 3 is for them," commented Aram Jabbari, Manager of Public Relations and Sales, as he adjusted his Junpei baseball cap whilst gazing into a mirror. "We could think of no more exciting a pre-order bonus than something straight out of the game, an extra that evokes a beloved character and has the power to make gamers feel like they're part of the SEES squad of students responsible for saving the world from darkness."

News of this premium pre-order bonus only complements what is already one of the biggest, deepest, and most satisfying handheld roleplaying games of all time. Unique among its competitors, Persona 3 Portable is laden with stark contrasts and a constant theme of duality. By day, players attend school, juggle interpersonal relationships, and even court a romance or two. By night, they are tasked with the lofty goal of saving the world from encroaching Shadows and darkness, having to fight off a grotesque menagerie of otherworldly creatures.

Featuring the addition of a new player-controlled female protagonist who offers players a fresh new perspective to one of gaming's most inventive narratives, P3P dramatically increases the replayability of a game already renowned for its length and depth. Numerous additional improvements and enhancements, like reduced load times and one-button menu shortcuts, serve to streamline the experience for optimal handheld RPG enjoyment.

SMT: Persona 3 Portable is currently scheduled for release on July 6, 2010. The Junpei baseball cap is only available as a pre-order bonus and only from participating retailers (while limited supplies last). That's kind of a lame bonus to tell the truth. But I guess they had to do something other than the standard artbook and soundtrack because everybody already has those either from P3 or FES. :p
They could have done a patch, a necklace/jewelry of some sort, a manga to go along with the game, etc...
A S.E.E.S. patch would've been cool, but not better than the hat.

so do you guys think i should sell my P3 FES for this copy? to be honest i never got a chance to really play it, so i wont be redoing anything, or should i just stick to that version?

edit: im not a huge persona follower thats why i ask, ive been playing persona for psp lately and love it >_

P3P is only The Journey(original story for Persona 3) FES has The Answer(extra scenario added for FES), so if you haven't played The Answer then you should probably keep FES.

I think it's worth noting, though, that the AI is so goddamned bad that The Answer wears out its welcome in a hurry. I finished it, but wow... never again.

So if I buy Persona 3 for a third time, will I magically get around to finishing it? Hmmm...

I think I can hold out for the inevitable $20 Amazon DOTD listing, I don't like hats. They are suspicious.

Im going to hold out as well. I have never actually played a Persona game before, but an RPG on PSP always bodes well for my completion %. The abiltity play in two hour chunks makes the 40-60 hours required to complete most RPGs a much easier task than being stuck in front of a TV.

New trailer with no real news attached to it. I got to see the game in action last week and I'm excited to get to try it out. It sucks that they took out the 3D exploration outside of the dungeon, but I'm fine with it if it helps make it easier to find points of interest and streamlines that part of the game.

It will have an install option to reduce load times, though I don't think they mentioned how big it could be. They were showing it without the install and it kind of seemed like Hexyz Force, which didn't really have long load times that needed an install, though it certainly helped anyway.

I wouldn't miss it. All that running around in between social links was a total waste of time.

Definitely glad I have this pre-ordered. Although Im actually also considering getting a new PSP to play it on as the sound on my current psp is boo boo. Am I the only one who likes the Persona games over the other SMT titles?

A bit of a bump for a dtoid preview video, and I must say I am getting pretty hyped for it now.

I can't wait to look silly in a Junpei hat of my very own, given it will fit around my head.

Probably not since I am the same way.

My copy shipped from Amazon too.

I burned myself out on it 3 summers ago, but I wanted it because I collect PSP RPGs and wanted that hat. I won't play it for quite awhile.

Received mine today. Amazon packed the small box in a huge box. The game is great so far. Don't know wth I'm going to do with the hat.

My game should come in tomorrow, along with my MGS:pW PSP. I'm quite excited. It's been awhile since I was actually excited for a game.

I'll probably just buy this at the store, I can live without a Junpei hat. Never played Persona 3, only experience with a Persona game was that SRPG game on the DS.

Devil Survivor isn't a Persona game.

Mine's scheduled to be delivered today. Can't wait to get that Junpei hat. Oh it comes with a free game? Awesome.
